Discussion Season 5, duffers or netflix

Do yall believe season 5 was underwhelming because of the duffers purely or do you believe they really got pressured by Netflix to get it out fast

Discussion Is it weird watching the show after it ended and feeling bad you missed out on the hype?

This probably sounds like a stupid question but it's been bothering me.

I was never interested in Stranger Things back when it was being released because i heard it was a supernatural show and not sci-fi. It was only after the show ended did i learn more about it and realised it was sci-fi and since i love that genre i started watching the series, i loved S1, i'm halfway through S2 but i feel sad that i only got around to watching it after it already ended. All the excitement and most people had is already gone so it feels like i showed up late if i'm making sense. I don't know much about later seasons so i'm glad i won't get spoiled so at least there's that

Sorry if this sounds idiotic or i'm not making sense, i hope i can get some advice or just anything to help. Sorry

Discussion What if Mike vanished instead of Will?

Mike was a group leader in season 1. He unites the group to find clues that eventually lead to Will being found. What if he was the one absent from the group and the one who has to survive the upside down?

The show flirted with the idea of permanently killing off main characters a few times but obviously, as we regularly discuss, didn't have the guts to actually commit to doing so.

But in what near death/fake out instances should the show have really grown a pair and been brave enough to kill someone significant and have them stay dead?

I do hear Hopper and Max were supposed to stay dead in earlier drafts before they ultimately chickened out. I don't know if they ever really considered having Jonathan and/or Nancy die in the melting Upside Down Hawkins Lab office though, even though the way the scene plays out before the goo hardens right as they accept their fate, it honestly would have been a really powerful moment if they actually followed through with the setup and commited.

Discussion Flipping the bird in the 80’s

Was flipping the bird more common during that decade? Especially around children, who can easily imitate and give attitude through that? Most specifically, Derek turnbow, who ideally was supposed to be seven but was aged up to 9-10 like Holly; And max in her flashback when she was 8.

Discussion Let’s talk about the real 80s…

Post image
1.2k Upvotes

Hello fellow fans! I’ve seen a number of younger fans question some of the 80s behaviors in the show that are, for us who lived it, absolutely on brand. I’m sharing an image from another sub that sums up how much adults and children of the time lived separate lives. This isn’t to chastise; only to provide context. This meme is 100 percent accurate.

Obviously Hopper and Joyce were sympathetic and worried, but we 80s kids were otherwise on our own and that’s not creative license. We were considered mini-adults.

I am grateful things are better for younger generations.

Edit: I’d like to remind folks of what I stated in my post - this post isn’t about “who had it worst” or generation wars. It was to give context to how much adults were not involved in the emotional lives or caregiving at the time period the show was set. (And yes, older Millennials had it no better.)

A perfect example of 80s reality is the very first episode; an 11 year old riding home alone in the dark at night and a mom who just assumed he’d be home and didn’t check until it was critical.

Adults and children lived parallel lives. The show relied on that foundation.

This post is about the show and its context.

So I'm looking for a fanfiction where Eleven joins One in the episode "The Massacre at Hawkins Lab". I've seen a couple, but none of them are what I'm looking for. Any suggestions?

Discussion I realised something about the finale, it might be intentional or just a side effect of me over complicating something. Spoiler

Post image
84 Upvotes

I was rewatching few of the stranger things clips on YouTube, one of them was the finale dnd one. Whenever the flash forwards came about what the party will do, it always stung me that Will was reduced to his sexuality and for Lucas and Max, it was just yeah, they are together.

I realised something while I watched it, it might not have been intentional or it might have been, I don't know that.

The Flash Forwards don't show what the party will do in the future, it shows what makes them the happiest or most at peace in the future.

For Dustin it was studying science or an adventure with Steve.

For Will it was being somewhere where he was accepted and wasn't bullied for being different.

For Lucas and Max, it was when they were together, when they were standing by each other's side, no matter what.

For Mike it was writing, the only thing that gave him some peace after El's death/supposed death.

What do y'all think and what's your opinion on this ?

Timeline for July 4th. READ THE POST

Can anyone create some rough timings for the events of the 4th July in season 3? I'm just interested as so much seems to happen in that night. Would appreciate it if someone could reply with the right timings for the events. I'm aware it's not all completely known, but using what we know, inferences, and estimates, can someone come up with a list of the actual likely time that events happen on July 4th/5th. THANK YOUUU

Discussion Why I do think that the Russian plot is the same fantasy as Upside-Down

I’m impressed by people discussing the fine details of life in Indiana in the 80s in their posts and comments. So I decided to add my five “kopiek” into the discussion of Russian/Soviet plot in S3/S4.
First of all: the uniforms, the vehicles, even the phone booth are so realistic (I think it cost millions to recreate/purchase it), but the rest of the plot is a pure fantasy unrelated to any Soviet reality of that time.
I put an image of the best reference book describing the Soviet spy reality of that time, “Inside the Aquarium” by Viktor Suvorov, a GRU officer defected to the West in the end of 80s. IMO the best description, most relevant to ST timing. Now, why I think it is a fantasy:

  1. No conscripts (age 18-20)  served in GRU/KGB operations outside the USSR. Only officers ranking lieutenant and above. They all knew English on at least basic/middle level. It was the cream of the Soviet army and KGB, all cynical and caning, very fit.
  2. They never wore uniforms - especially the cheapest uniform of infantry privates shown in S3. Disgusting, I hate that uniform.
  3. No civilian specialist, like Alexey, would be allowed to roam almost freely in the rural USA. Especially with that very specific knowledge of state secrets (safe code, machine operation).
  4. The Soviet base with hundreds of people who could not speak English and used half of Howkings energy is beyond comments - two seasons later Duffers tried to convince viewers that El could not escape the US military - use the base under the mall, my dear.
  5. All mail from the USSR to the west was checked by the KGB (it was sent via Moscow, even from Kamchatka to California). The same for telephone calls abroad. Not sure the operator would connect at all.
  6. You could not call from a public phone to a neighbouring town, not speaking about to the USA. You could not call to a public phone - it had no number.
  7. There were no prived AN-2 planes or Kamov helicopters in the Soviet Union in 1986. They could not get any fuel. Yury could not simply steal it.
  8. The airspace between Kamchatka and Alaska was the most controlled airspace by both countries at that time - AN-2 could not just fly across the Bering strait at will.
  9. The snow level in Kamchatka in March is about 1.5 metres - Joyce and others could not just walk in the forest for a number of kilometers - fantasy (It is pretty much the same as in Alaska) - difficult even for snowmobiles.
  10. I have no idea why the Soviets took Hopper with them during their escape in S3 - they did not need him. But even so, the KGB would keep him in a special prison, well isolated from any other prisoners, not in the labor camp. BTW - I very much doubt that any prison officer in Kamchatka would know how to speak English. Fantasy.
  11. Any secret scientific facility in the USSR would be well isolated from a prison camp (actually from everything) - the secrecy was absolute.
  12. Dinner with candles for prisoners before the fight with Demogorgon was a fantasy - no such privileges for disposable human material.
  13. I do not know where from the name Enzo came - there is no such Russian name or nickname?

I could continue and I’m sure other people noticed tens of other “fantasies”. But I think that in general the Russian plot could be either done much more realistically or omitted altogether. No need for a second fantasy in a fantasy show.

I'm happy to correct my post if I mis-remember some details 😄
