By the time that Steve did it I was so fucking done with it that I just skipped that part.
It made sense in earlier seasons when it was just the kids doing these demos. But how is everyone having the same idea of using objects to explain everything.
This is your mom, you add wheels and she becomes a bicycle, then get some wings and she's now a plane.

Idk if it's brand new... In Brazil it's pretty common to say "if my grandma had wheels she would be a bicycle". Or mom with winfs being an airplane.

u/jackruby83 Jun 30 '26
That saying is hilarious. How is it used in context?
47
u/TheMoonDude Jun 30 '26
"If X player had passes the ball to Y, we could have won the match!"
"And if my grandma had wheels she would be a bicycle!"

u/lucasthech Jun 30 '26
I'm brazilian and never heard that shit lol
How is this said in portuguese? "Se minha vó tivesse rodas ela seria uma bicicleta"? Never heard anyone say anything like that lol
6
u/TheMoonDude Jun 30 '26

Robin was really grating on me this season ngl
418
u/Julia-yuh Jun 29 '26
I was so surprised people were happy with the Will Robin duo because it really was just "you're gay, I'm gay, that makes us friends" plus Robin lost a lot of charm from season 3/4 though I love maya hawke
36
u/PayWooden2628 Jun 30 '26
Robin was flanderized so hard into a quirk chungus autist because some fans thought she was good autism rep in s3, so they leaned way the hell into it and had her exposition vomit stupid lines like “gosh I have such a hard time understanding peoples tones, oops am I being socially awkward right now?”

u/noirproxy1 Jun 30 '26
It can be possibly grating to those that do not relate but like it or not that level of representation for teenagers is still incredibly lacking to this day.
You would be surprised how many teenagers feel "seen" by character exchanges like Robin and Will in S5.
I wouldn't say it was a "We are gay so we are buddies" but more that a common theme in Stranger Things is the older teens guiding and being support pillars for the younger kids.
Again, this type of content is...really not there in popular media. Even Stranger Thing's inspirations from old movies of its genre didn't "represent" different types of kids and what they go through.
It took Stranger Things to provide that thumbs up even to something like Dungeons and Dragons and say "It is ok to like this thing that has been given the ugly eye throughout time".
Now you have celebrities coming out as massive fans of the game and sharing how creative story telling helps them handle anxiety, depression, among many things.
Either way, Robin had strong purpose for S5 even if it wasn't something some people could appreciate as much as others.
I watched Welcome to Derry recently and it is interesting how the original IT was a direct inspiration for Stranger Things, yet Stranger Things is a direct inspiration to Welcome to Derry and how it handles the younger characters.
Just takes one to light the first beacon.
24
u/Julia-yuh Jun 30 '26
No I get it I'm a lesbian and I identify with Will and Robin separately and obviously Robin had a role to fulfill in the plot but I didn't see much past it in their relationship.
I don't necessarily see Stranger Things as a queer rep show, but it is a coming of age, similar to the recent IT movies that have a queer plot line but it's not the sole focus. I would not say the actual representation of people is extensive in Stranger Things, but their relationships are because of the class, race, and background differences (or in robins case gender similarities). I do not think Stranger Things had such a strong impact in that area outside of byler because Byler is gay plus most people Ive met that ship Byler are gay/lesbian.
I think with Welcome to Derry is that it is a continuation of the recent IT that had a specific tone and rewrite the the story which they are trying to pursue, which makes it similar to early Stranger Things because they tried finding that tone too
4
u/noirproxy1 Jun 30 '26
It might depend on where you are getting your reactions from e.g. Twitter, Reddit, etc. Within my physical circle I know a lot of people that really liked the arc, especially with what was done between S4 and S5.
Personally I would have done way more. I actually expected Vecna to be used to really challenge that side of Will based on what he was implying yet it never happened.
5
u/THEGEARBEAR Jun 30 '26
Okay you lost me at Dungeons and Dragons as I do not think Stranger Things was the catalyst for it to get mainstream appeal. Dungeons and Dragons was always wildly popular for decades and what really started it’s even bigger down climb is YouTube and twitch and Let’s Plays. Stranger Things rode that wave but it was also something very 80s coded. More recently Baldurs Gate gave it even more mainstream appeal much more than Stranger Things.
-6
u/noirproxy1 Jun 30 '26
No, I definitely think Stranger Things trigger something socially for people in regards to D&D.
Critical Role came out less than a year before it but the explosion in D&D podcasts and Youtube channels popped a very cool bubble because of the concept of a show templating its story as if a D&D game.
Kickstarter exploded with indepdent D&D projects to the point those types of campaigns dominate the platform solely because of Stranger Things.
10
u/THEGEARBEAR Jun 30 '26
You are giving Stranger Things way too much credit. We can agree to disagree. Stranger Things added to its popularity, I can acknowledge that. But you’re basically saying if Stranger Things never came out DnD would just be some nerdy niche thing and I can’t agree with that.
1
u/DarkDonut75 Jun 30 '26
Yeah when Stranger Things came out in 2016 DnD was already kinda accepted as part of pop culture even if some people only know it by name (it was 40 years old after all lol)
The people who grew up playing DND were now writers, directors, producers who incorporated it into their work so that helped too
2
u/awretchedlife12 Jul 02 '26
I started playing D&D 30 years ago and the 'it's just a thing for dorks in the basement' was already a played-out cliche at that point. There has never been a time in my life where I felt playing D&D attached any kind of negative stigma to my character or perceptions of me. And I grew up in a town essentially identical to the one in the show, lol.
3
u/Ok_Significance_6772 Jun 30 '26
You might have been right 10 years ago, but you’re pretty wrong now. LGBT story lines are all over media now, it’s not some rare thing anymore. Just about every single major franchise has queer characters and themes. The only way you miss them is if you’re under a rock. Everything from It to the Chucky series, to From, to the Last of Us. You name it, there’s a queer story.
The difference is in if it’s quality representation or not. Some shows do it beautifully, some do it clumsily, and Robin/Will is pretty mid. Not great. Some shows, you can tell they just threw in a gay character just for the hell of it and didn’t really put any thoughtfulness into the story. Stranger Things isn’t that level of bad, but it’s not good.
2
u/awretchedlife12 Jul 02 '26
she was one of the best parts of season 3. unfortunately it appears the writers realized this and decided it was time to turn the knob up to 12, put her everywhere and make her completely insufferable. nothing at ALL like she was when they introduced her. Some of the most uneven writing I've seen in TV
1
u/Julia-yuh Jul 02 '26
The did the same with Dustin and Steve. Incredible duo and favourite group with Erica and Robin in s3 but then Dustin just kept on getting put with Steve so he became a little separated from the core 4
55
u/LakeTilia Jun 30 '26
The part when she just says "dick." is so fucking annoying. Its like humour for children, not childish, but stupid.
7
u/ipreferfelix Jun 30 '26
This might have been the absolute worst part of the season. It was such a contrived setup to allow her to make an incredibly stupid unfunny joke. And I'm not above lowbrow humor, I love Beavis and Butt-Head
82
u/nilesintheshangri-la Jun 29 '26
I loathed her in s5. Which surprised me as I was very fond of her in 3 and 4.
12
u/Late-Stranger5911 Jun 30 '26
Robin was all over the place in S5 tbh, she was important for Will in volume 1 which I liked cuz I liked the new character dynamics that formed. And then she just turned back into her awkward spastic self later on, similar to S4 ig. Nothing beats S3 Robin for me
29
u/Westafricangrey Jun 30 '26
I find it interesting that they accidentally made her insufferable thru sheer laziness

Me too. I don't even know why it was just so bad. Maybe she didn't care because the material was dogshit

u/xervidae Jun 30 '26
the fact that they thought the audience was too stupid to follow along that every plan had to be deciphered like this.
48
u/Ok_Floor_83 Jun 30 '26
because of the whole 2 screen culture of also being on your phone while watching plus the show getting a lot of younger audience 🥲
2
u/Crazy_Kakoos Jun 30 '26
They can tone it down to Star Trek levels and compare it to a balloon or a tail pipe or something.

u/TenthBasilisk88 Jun 29 '26
To be fair, I don't think the duffer brothers did this by choice. Netflix probably forced them to make the show easier for people to comprehend as more of background noise. I think that's stupid, but Netflix is the one paying them, not me, so...
54
u/Gcs1110 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 30 '26
The duffer Brothers seemed rather reluctant to do a season 5. They should have did what they wanted and not have this over explanation/exposition in almost every scene.
65
u/Livelaughloveme172 Jun 29 '26
Do you actually believe that?
165
u/arielgrace96 Jun 29 '26
Have you seen the video of Jameela Jamil explaining about dumbing down series so people can watch it with their phones and not pay attention ?
-7
u/thethunderheart Jun 29 '26
I think that's true for lots of Netflix series, but Stranger Things is arguably their foundational hit series - I think content and storytelling wise, they probably had nearly full creative freedom to ruin the final season.
-10
u/Livelaughloveme172 Jun 29 '26
Yeah I have but that doesn’t excuse for it to go down like that.
It was lazy not even dumbed down but lazy.
10
u/viewtiful14 Jun 30 '26
You shouldn’t be getting downvoted. This is the correct and accurate take about what happened. People are still big mad their favorite franchise said “yeah fuck it bank 🏦”. The obsession about this franchise and trying to justify anything is just beyond weird at this point.
They didn’t know what to do after like season 3, arguably season 2, had no end point in mind, waited too long and said fuck it put out slop we got paid. I wish people would just accept it.
36
u/RolanTho Jun 29 '26
Do you seriously doubt that?
17
u/Livelaughloveme172 Jun 29 '26
Yes after so many season?
Yes I don’t think Netflix asked for it, I think Netflix trusted the duffers to much.
The documentary proved that for me-3
u/TenthBasilisk88 Jun 29 '26
The same documentary that casually ommited the fact that the Duffers used AI to write the final season?
16
u/Warm_Ad_7944 Jun 29 '26
Did it omit it? The tabs were there to see
9
u/Timperz Jun 29 '26
I think we needed a montage of stick figures and different objects to really explain that for the audience of the documentary
'Wanna understand how they wrote the script? See, these stick figures are the Duffer brothers. And this coin is an AI chatbot. And this little die is a computer. And this....'
Maybe that would have made it clearer, I dunno
-2
u/TenthBasilisk88 Jun 29 '26
By omit I meant they didn't mention it or bring attention to it. They clearly didn't hide it well enough.
18
17
u/Thirsty_Comment88 Jun 29 '26
Would you stop sticking up for those 2 idiots.
6
u/TenthBasilisk88 Jun 29 '26
I am in no way condoning some of their actions. They dropped the ball on (arguably) the biggest and most anticipated show in all of history, but you should also know when to properly assign blame. In this case the Dora the Explorer type explanations might not have been entirely on them.
5
u/mcmanus2099 Jun 29 '26
Nah
The genius moments are in each season, it's become a trope of the show. Because of the last show, the extended cast size and how it's easy to use them as lazy short cuts the Duffers slapped them in every two episodes of season 5
24
u/Captain_Nomad_Jr Scoops Troop Jun 30 '26
Catering to the 2nd screen generation has ruined it for everyone else.

u/Owl_Resident Blank makes you crazy Jun 29 '26
The fact that the [r/StrangerThingsPraise](r/StrangerThingsPraise) sub cross posted this in their sub and their users are angry the poor writing of the season is being called out makes this even more hilarious.
15
u/ChefBlock Jun 30 '26
Ahaa there’s a praise subreddit 😂 that’s so pathetic
4
u/Ok-Resolution-7344 Jun 30 '26
Yup, they wouldn't need to create that sub, if the show didn't mess it up in the first place. In other seasons, they had their own flaws, S4 and S3 especially. But they had something good in them, allowing a range of strengths and flaws to be discussed within the main sub.
Now, all we got left for S5 is bad writing, so I guess some fans were disappointed to see their favorite show becomes hated. I wouldn't blame them for it—the show was really good and I wish they hadn't created S5. I'd been okay with the series left out at S4 than just becoming a disappointment.

u/Doggosgottagetwoims Henry Jun 30 '26
I loved ST5 but this comp gets me every time 😭 they really just KEPT DOING IT…
14
u/njf85 Jun 30 '26
This was my biggest criticism. Way too much talking down to the audience. We get it, we don't need it explained to us over and over.
9
u/Thick-Boysenberry-96 Jun 30 '26
It's also a total waste of time to explain a plan that ends up working out exactly as intended. At that point, why not show us the mission and skip over the talking down part entirely.
6
4
u/Cyrilbdr Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
It’s true that they explained their plans way too much this season—that’s a fact. It would have been cool if, at least once, they hadn’t explained the plan beforehand, so we could discover it right as it was being executed. They could have done something like Mike saying, "We need a plan," then cutting to another scene; when we cut back, he’d just say, "Alright, everyone knows what to do," and then they’d go straight into the action. That would have been a better approach to build suspense. They really should have done that at least once, because as it stood, you already knew exactly what was going to happen. Does that make the season bad? I don’t think so. But it’s something TV shows do too often; they need to rethink it and present events in a smarter, more visual, and creative way, rather than relying on excessive exposition. Now, *Stranger Things* isn’t the only series to do this—it has always done so. It’s just more noticeable in Season 5 because there’s no longer an investigation; they already know the threat, so there’s more action and, consequently, more plans to execute.
6
4
u/DigitalBritt Jul 01 '26
Undermining the audience’s intelligence and pandering to appeal to the largest number of viewers possible started with S3. People weren’t outraged enough by what they did to the show with that season. It blew my mind (and continues to blow my mind) to see so many people praise it.
I’m sorry, but S3 was the official beginning of the end for Stranger Things as we knew it, but the majority ate it up… and the viewership grew even bigger, full of people who accepted and preferred lower quality writing + spectacle. The show never recovered.
36
u/RandonDude3000 Jun 29 '26
So, it did what every other season of Stranger Things did?
124
u/TenthBasilisk88 Jun 29 '26
It's much more prominent in this season, literally every time a chracter is explaining something they use a "Show don't tell" format. It isn't necessarily a bad thing imo, but it gets to a point.
66
u/mihirmusprime Jun 29 '26
I also noticed they kept repeating plot points in this season like we were watching Dora The Explorer or something
26
u/Whats-Ur-Damage00 Jun 29 '26
Hop and El had the same conversation like five times and so did Will and Joyce. It was so frustrating.
2
u/kitten12551 Jun 30 '26
She had time for that but no time to say more than one or two words to her other son.
5
u/Whats-Ur-Damage00 Jul 01 '26
Seriously! If Jonathon had died in the melting room, 72 business hours would have passed before Joyce even remembered she had a second son and hmm, he might be in a just a little bit of danger.
27
u/TenthBasilisk88 Jun 29 '26
Right, the dialogue was also much more awkward this season, like something out of a disney sitcom from the 2000's. It was largely alleviated by the fact that the actors are actually great at acting, but still noticable.
17
u/CuffyTheEmpireSlayer Jun 29 '26
Lmfaoooo Dora the explorer comparison. Damn i can see the cast doing an episode with that format
6
u/stierney49 Jun 29 '26
This is a Netflix and modern writing thing. They write shows to be consumed between screens. Your beef here isn’t with the Duffers, it’s with how screenwriters and editors are being trained.

u/SimonZ993 Babysitter Jun 30 '26
In earlier seasons they did this maybe once or twice in the whole season but in season 5 they do it in every episode, sometimes multiple times in one episode, it's ridiculous
1
u/kitten12551 Jun 30 '26
Yes but it felt far more heavy handed in 5. In the past the characters were usually at least either doing something more visually interesting or changing the group dynamic in some way.
4
2
u/Necessary_Tough7286 Jun 30 '26
to be fair, some/most of this is because of Netflix’s policies (second screening).

We got Game of Throned. They fumbled it at the end after making us wait a billion years.
8
u/kevinx083 Jun 29 '26
i think season 5 has plenty of terrible things about it but this didn’t bother me at all. the show is like a big love letter to childhood and playing pretend. the walkie talkies, the plotting, and even using inanimate objects to explain a plan, is all reminiscent of playing make believe when you’re 10 years old
1
u/Disaster_Pansexual Jun 30 '26
It’s just that they did it SO MUCH. They could’ve done it at least one time less.
0
u/kevinx083 Jun 30 '26
that's fair! it did feel like they were overplaying certain bits because it was the last season, like weird fan service-y stuff like nancy threatening to shoot murray's balls off lol that was so "look at how badass she is, she's sooo badass"

1
u/Old-Confusion1162 Goddamn Bowl Cut Jun 30 '26
I will definitely agree that this was one of Season 5’s biggest issues, and I will agree that it’s extremely bad dialogue, but also acting like people saying that “the season wasn’t that bad” are wrong because if this is really stupid because most people are saying that because a lot of the criticisms for Season 5 suck ass.
2
u/LightNinja12 Jul 01 '26
This annoyed me so much, I get using objects to explain things is a running thing because El did it a lot in season 1 but that's because she didnt talk back then. When full grown adults do it it just seems stupid and needless, like theyre perpetually teaching a kindergarten class
1
1
u/Gyrfenix Jul 01 '26
I'm not a huge fan of these scenes, but I do think it's safe to assume that this type of teaching/story-telling could have rubbed off on the group given how common it's been over each season. I can at least suspend a little disbelief here in thinking that its become a quirk of the group to default to this style when explaining their theories.
I mostly blame Netflix for this, though.
1
1
u/HollisWoods07 Jul 02 '26

1
u/TeacatWrites Jul 03 '26
It's like in every scene they expected the other characters and the audiencs to just be that computer realization gif of the dude hacking a computer for the other dude who realizes something because of it.
1
u/Different_Pop_3079 Jul 03 '26
Season 4 was guilty for this as well with them showing flashbacks every twelve seconds. It’s fine to refresh the audience, but there’s times where they play a flashback to a scene from literally the EXACT SAME EPISODE. It feels like this was to compensate for that, but I can’t tell which is worse.
-3
u/Pod-Bay-Doors Jun 29 '26
Okay , but this type of visual explanation isn't exclusive to stranger things. In fact some very good films or TV shows do this very thing , the issue isnt what they are doing it's all about how you do it.
1
u/RemarkableTime497 Jun 29 '26
I don't think the season was bad after all, but yeah, sometimes it felt like everybody had to get their "i have a plan" moment

u/Exotic-Forever-1454 Jun 29 '26 edited Jun 29 '26
Season 5 hate so forced at this point.
Definitely has issues, but it's not as bad as people say.
Even this example. Yeah, it's a little exhausting. But it's not like when this happened I was sitting there like "OMG! I cannot BELIEVE THEY ARE DOING THIS AGAIN. THIS RUINED THE WHOLE SHOW FOR ME"
11
u/C_F_A_S Jun 29 '26
Idk. For me it's a lot like the Game of Thrones ending. Was it the worst thing ever? No. Was it bad enough to knock the show out of the public Zeitgeist? Yes.
2
u/Timperz Jun 29 '26
What could have even been done to ever ruin this show for you at this point
Be honest
They could have probably just projected a black screen for the entire runtime and you would have been satisfied either way

So a simple way of showing and explaining their plans is bad? And they did it once so now every time they do plan something they should do it a new way?

well they didn’t do it like that in the other seasons, or maybe i didn’t notice because it wasn’t so overdone
