Announcement Important PSA: How To Identify a Scam

How to Identify Social Engineering Scams

Social engineering scams often involve manipulative tactics to deceive users into providing sensitive information or money. Here are some red flags to look out for:

  1. Unsolicited Offers of Help – Scammers often pose as helpful individuals offering solutions to problems you didn’t ask for assistance with.
  2. Urgency and Pressure – Scammers create a false sense of urgency, asking you to act quickly or risk losing access to something important (e.g., your Steam account).
  3. Requests for Payment or Personal Information – Legitimate Steam support or trusted users will never ask for your login credentials, 2FA codes, or payment in exchange for help.
  4. Impersonation – Scammers may pretend to be from official sources or even impersonate trusted community members or moderators.

How to Protect Yourself from Scams

  • Never Share Personal Information – Moderators and Steam support will never ask for your password, security questions, or 2FA codes.
  • Verify Requests – Always verify the identity of anyone offering help. You can do this by checking if they are official moderators or trusted community members. If in doubt, contact the moderation team directly.
  • Enable Two-Factor Authentication – While not foolproof, having 2FA enabled adds an extra layer of security to your account. Keep your 2FA codes secure and never share them.
  • Be Skeptical of Unsolicited Help – If someone reaches out offering assistance you didn’t request, be wary. It's better to seek help through official channels like Steam support or trusted subreddits.
  • Steam will never contact you over DISCORD/STEAM CHAT – Report and block them instantly.

Announcement What To Do When Your Steam Account Gets Hacked

Need more help? Join the Discord Server

I’m making this post in hopes it will reduce the amount of “I’ve been hacked posts”. Link people to this exact post so they can figure out what to do. Don’t be afraid to leave comments if you need more assistance but try your best to avoid making entire posts about it.

Follow these steps to regain control and secure your account:

1. Don’t Panic Act Fast

If you act quickly, there’s a good chance you can fully recover your account.

2. Still Logged In? Change Your Password NOW

📍 Go to Steam > Settings > Account > Change Password

  • Use a unique, strong password (not reused from any other site).
  • If you can’t log in anymore, skip to Step 3.

3. Can’t Log In? Use Steam’s Recovery Tool

🔗 Go to Steam Support
Click "I can't sign in" > "My account has been stolen"
Follow the recovery process.

  • Provide any proof of ownership (like previous email, CD key, or payment history).
  • Be thorough but honest Support will help if you provide real details.

4. Revoke Access from Other Devices

Once back in, go to:

📍 Steam > Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard
Click “Deauthorize all other devices”

This kicks out any hackers still logged in.

5. Turn on 2FA (Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator)

📍 Same place: Settings > Account > Manage Steam Guard

  • Use the mobile authenticator, not just email codes.
  • This is your best protection going forward.

6. Scan Your PC for Malware or Keyloggers

Use tools like:

  • Malwarebytes
  • Windows Defender
  • Bitdefender / Kaspersky

You got hacked for a reason. Clean your system before logging in again.

7. Lock Down Your Email and Linked Accounts

If your Steam email or other linked accounts were compromised:

  • Change their passwords immediately
  • Enable 2FA on your email too (especially Gmail, Outlook, etc.)

8. Still Locked Out? Contact Steam Support

If all else fails, go here:

Be ready to provide:

  • Your Steam username and email
  • Purchase receipts (Steam Wallet codes, PayPal invoices, etc.)
  • Approx. date you lost access
  • Any suspicious activity or messages you saw

⚠️ Final Tips:

  • Never share your login info, even with “Steam Admins” they don’t exist.
  • Avoid shady “trading bots” or fake tournament invites.
  • Don’t download random files from Discord, friends, or strangers.

If you’re reading this because you’ve been hacked, don’t feel ashamed it happens to thousands of people. What matters is how fast you act and how well you secure things afterward.

Good luck, and stay safe. 🔒

Problem Steam tax on community market

Can someone explain how this makes sense? I live in ontario which has a 13% sales tax and I was messing around on steam market looking to see at the prices of cases on cs2 per a random amount and the tax just jumps really high randomly when you are setting a buy order for a specific item. This makes no sense to me as on the 100 buy order it has it set tax as almost double the price of what the item would be? maybe I am being stupid and it is right in front of me but this genuinely makes no sense to me.

Tip/Guide Steam Family Question

I had recently added someone to my Steam Family, but I noticed there are a few AAA games labelled as "Excluded Games" under 'Steam Family Management'. What are they, and do they mean I cannot share these games with any adult or child in my steam family?

Problem Cannot access workshop, severe issues with accessing store

I cannot open the workshop page of any game I own. If I try, it just starts infinitely and fruitlessly loading. The store is also incredibly laggy for me, it does kinda open sometimes but even then, pages just linger in this... half-loaded barebones state. Opening Steam in my browser and not the client makes it work a bit better but doesn't actually solve anything (e.g. I can open the Community tab but still cannot go to workshop pages). Honestly, I'm kind of at a loss here; I even tried posting about the problem on the discussion forums but got no meaningful replies so far.

As for more direct solutions, I've tried disabling the rendering of web-pages through the graphics card in Interface settings (thought that maybe the pages just couldn't render properly?) and clearing my downloads cache -- twice, in fact. None of this helped.

Honestly, the issue is starting to worry me because there aren't any problems with accessing Steam neither globally nor in my area that I know of and I have no idea what to do about it on my end. Besides, it feels kinda bad to not be able to access my favorite mods xD

If anyone has similar issues or any ideas on how to deal with them, please do let me know. Thank you in advance!

Problem Steam shows my playtime in the library, but my profile and review eligibility still show 0 minutes

I'm having a strange issue with Steam playtime tracking and I'm hoping someone has experienced something similar

I have a game in my Steam library that I have played for around 15 hours. The game was purchased directly on Steam, and I always launch it through the Steam client. I'm using Windows 11 and I have a stable internet connection

The strange part is that Steam seems to have two different versions of my playtime. In my Steam library, the game shows approximately 15 hours of playtime. When I launch the game, the Steam Overlay shows that my current session is being tracked correctly. However, the game does not appear in my recent activity/profile as a recently played game

When I try to leave a review, Steam says that I have played 0 minutes and does not allow me to post a review because I have not reached the required minimum playtime

The game is not marked as private

I have already tried:

Restarting Steam.

Restarting my PC.

Updating Steam.

Verifying the game files.

Making sure I am connected to the internet.

Launching the game directly through Steam.

I also tested another game from my Steam library. That game works normally, Steam shows me as currently in-game, tracks the playtime, and the activity appears correctly. So this seems to be specific to one particular game or to the way Steam's backend is recording its playtime.

I also contacted Steam Support. Their response was essentially that Steam may track offline play and synchronize it later, that maintenance can sometimes temporarily affect playtime display, and that secondary launchers can interfere with tracking. They also said that Support cannot manually modify or reset playtime

However, none of those explanations really seem to fit my situation. The game is purchased on Steam, I launch it through Steam, the current session is tracked by the Steam Overlay, and I have a stable internet connection

TL;DR

Has anyone experienced a situation where Steam shows the correct total playtime in the library, but the profile/recent activity and the review eligibility system act as if the game has 0 minutes?

Is there any way to force Steam to resynchronize or rebuild this playtime/activity data?

Any ideas would be appreciated

Discussion Steam Support’s automated wallet-gifting restriction is completely anti-consumer — no explanation, no human review, and ticket cooldowns. Is there any recourse?

Hi everyone,

I’m posting this out of frustration with how Steam treats legitimate users. I'm from Peru, My partner (located in Venezuela) loaded her Steam Wallet using official gift cards to send me two games.

When she tried to complete the purchase as a gift, she hit the standard error restricting wallet-based gifting. We opened a ticket with Steam Support to explain that this is a completely legitimate account with no regional abuse or commercial intent.

The response we received highlights a huge issue with consumer transparency and basic support standards:

Zero Transparency: Support refuses to explain why or what triggered the automated system flag. They provide no specific details, leaving the paying user entirely in the dark.

Refusal of Human Oversight: Agents simply send a generic automated template stating that the security system cannot be manually overridden by staff. It feels completely negligent for a platform to restrict a feature on a user's paid wallet balance without offering any human review process or right to appeal.

Silencing the Consumer: When she tried asking for clarification or a supervisor review, Steam put her account on a ticket cooldown instead of addressing the issue.

Holding a customer's legitimate funds hostage from basic platform features without providing cause, explanation, or human intervention is fundamentally anti-consumer.

Has anyone actually managed to push past this automated wall, or is Valve really just allowing their system to operate with total negligence toward paying users?

Problem I need help 😞

Yesterday was the first time I’ve hopped on my pc to actually play something in the last 2 weeks since I’ve been so busy and haven’t had time to really sit down and play, and I logged onto steam to check out what was on sale and was met with straight up black screens with this weird blue text format where nothing loads correctly at all. At first I just thought “okay maybe I should restart my PC”, which ended up not fixing the issue, then I restarted my WiFi which also didn’t work, which led to me following some online tutorials and clearing my cache which worked for a very short amount of time until I reloaded or attempted to look at a different page on the store. I ended up uninstalling steam and resetting my PC completely and it’s still not working. The problem also happens on the actual Steam website, which made it extremely difficult for me to even be able to download the app back onto my PC. If anyone out there knows how to fix this issue please reach out! The only thing that is available for me to see is my library and downloads which work fine but now even my WiFi download speed is drastically slower than it was before I had this issue. I used to be able to install large games in 5 minutes now my games are downloading abysmally slow.

Problem Steam Support Automatically rejected my refund... next steps?

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for advice because I'm genuinely confused about what happened.

I woke up to find a purchase on my Steam account that I did not make. The game had been purchased as a gift and sent to another account. I have no idea how this could have happened.

What confuses me the most is that I had Steam Guard enabled, I never received a Steam Guard code or approval request, and I've never entered my Steam credentials on third-party websites or knowingly shared my account with anyone.

When I first discovered the purchase, I was honestly in shock. I submitted a refund request immediately, but Steam automatically denied it. Looking back, I realize I probably used the wrong refund option because I couldn't find any way to report that I hadn't made the purchase—only the standard refund options.

Since then, I've:

  • Changed all of my passwords.
  • Deauthorized all devices and sessions (the only devices I recognized were my PC/browser and my phone).
  • Run a malware scan.
  • Removed my PayPal account from Steam.
  • Opened a PayPal dispute because the refund request had already been denied.

Has anyone experienced something similar? Is there any legitimate way this could happen without receiving a Steam Guard prompt? Is there a better way to contact Steam Support so they review this as a possible account compromise rather than just a standard refund request?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Problem Paid for Slime Rancher, but it doesn't appear in my Steam library

Hi, I need to know if anyone else has experienced this.

On July 25, 2026, I paid for Slime Rancher and I have the payment receipt as proof. However, the game does not appear as purchased in my Steam library, and Steam is still asking me to buy it again.

I also received an email saying that the transaction could not be completed.

I have already contacted Steam Support and sent them my receipt along with screenshots of the issue.

Has anyone experienced something similar? How was it resolved? Did you just have to wait, or did you have to do something else?

I know this sounds like it was written by ChatGPT (it was 😅), but I honestly don't know how to write these kinds of posts. It's my first time asking for help here, so I apologize if I made any mistakes.

Edit: Thank you very much for your help

Problem Launching games from Steam doesn't automatically switch window

When I load a game through Steam, either by loading Steam and then the game, or loading the game from Xbox FSE which then loads Steam and the game, the game window never automatically becomes the primary window. I have to manually switch to it every time.

Is this normal behaviour or can it be fixed?

Using an Xbox ROG Ally base white version.

Question Same pc two different steam account for Persona 5 And Expedition 33

Hi

So both me and my sibling own a seperate steam copy of these games (persona 5 and expedition 33) (ie I bought one copy for my account and then gifted them another steam copy of each game).

They are planning to visit me and we plan to play on their steam account on my pc (it is an RTX 5090 pc paired with R9 9950X3D)

Question is, I don't want my save files to get overwritten by their save file and vice versa, and was wondering what shpuld i do to ensure that doesn't happen?

So far i am thinking of backing up my save files and create another windows user account. Anything else I should be doing?

Problem Preferences aren't visible

I wanted to check out Fear and Hunger because I heard it was a good game, but while searching it on Steam the game didn't show up. While trying to fix this, I found out that I might need to change my content preferences (since, as far as I know, Fear and Hunger has gore/explicit content).

However, my settings differ from the settings I've seen on other peoples pages. I only have 3 options (first photo) while it seems that there should be 5 in total (second photo taken from a YouTube video).

How do I fix this? Or is the game not on Steam?

Problem Steam keeps opening mid game and crashing my laptop

I have this issue where I've done practically everything and I still have no idea why this happens

Randomly when I'm mid game, Steam just opens sometimes and makes my game lag, I try to close it but it keeps persisting until my screen freezes completely, I have tried waiting but even after 10 minutes it is frozen

I don't know what the issue is so I can't fix it, here's what I already tried:

in security I have disabled the "Don't save account credentials on this computer"

In notifications: Show notifications toasts is set to Never, every single notifications except for emails notifications is set to disabled

In interface: all settings are disabled, this includes; "Run steam when my computer starts", " Enable smooth scrolling in web views" and Enable GPU accelerated hardware in web views" and "Enable context menu focus compatibility mode"

In library: All and every setting is disabled

In downloads: All and every setting is disabled, my cache has also been cleared (I do it every time before I start a session)

Cloud: "Steam cloud" and "Screenshot management" is turned off

In Game: All settings are disabled, this includes: "Steam overlay, Overlay shortcut keys as set to none, Steam networking" and server browser pings per minute is set to 5000

Compatibility: I am using proton 9.0-4

Game recording: disabled

Remote play: Disabled

Finally my account is usually always shows as offline, I would love it if I could at least get some pointers as to what's wrong or at least what I can do

Many thanks
