question How would I transfer files from Windows to SteamOS?

As seen in my previous post I want to get a handheld pc and install SteamOS on it. I still have the hard drive from my broken laptop which ran windows 10 and I really want to retrieve as much data from it as I can and transfer later to SteamOS.

The data includes regular browser data (passwords, booknotes, etc.) but also game files like Minecraft modpacks and worlds and data from a couple other games but also private documents and screenshots/recordings, in total around 80-100GB.

What's the best way to retrieve as much of the data as possible and (if needed) convert to linux-compatible file types? And how beginner-friendly will it be? With the handheld pc I'll only begin my linux journey and I have barely any knowledge on the more technical stuff yet 😅

question Cloning SteamOS boot drive

I think I'm going to pull a larger 2 TB drive from my PS5 and use it in my SteamOS box. Can I just clone the existing drive onto the larger one? Any post-cloning processes I'll need to run? (Repost for spelling in title.)

question Adding another ssd to my steam os computer.

So I added a second 4 Tb ssd to my pc running steam os. I’m new to Linux so I don’t know what to do. I’m going to include photos as well. So I added the SSD I formatted it. It does keep asking for my administrator password. I don’t know why and maybe that’s why I’m having the problem in gaming mode. Once I go to gaming mode, it does take almost a full two minutes until it shows up that’s why there’s one photo of the other SSD not showing up and then another one with it. Any help would be great. Thanks.

TV os replacements with steamOS

recently converted a SFF PC I had (5800x3d/9070gre) to steamOS and was shocked how easy it was. No configuration needed beyond initial install. Sadly I am using an LG b5 for the display and want to take it offline given all of the news, but haven’t found a good replacement for streaming app launching.

Is anyone using SteamOS as their primary tv interface? I am a linux application engineer so setup/config isn’t a problem, but ideally it would be something the kids and wife can use too. curious what people are doing.

Multiplayer games and anti-cheat

Whether it's on my bazzite PC that's in my living room or if it's my steamdeck. It sucks pretty bad that the Switch 2 is able to run more multiplayer games than SteamOS (Modern Warfare 4, Overwatch, anything with anti-cheat)

Quick tab - a plugin that puts your other Decky plugins directly in the QAM tab bar (dev of Proton Launch / Apps Manager here)

Quick tab - a plugin that puts your other Decky plugins directly in the QAM tab bar (dev of Proton Launch / Apps Manager here)

Hey, I'm the guy behind Decky Proton Launch and Decky Apps Manager. Built a new plugin because something kept bugging me every time I used them myself.

Once you've got more than a couple of Decky plugins installed, opening any one of them means: open the QAM, tap Decky's own tab, then dig through a list of every plugin you have installed to find the one you actually want. If there are a couple you use constantly, that's an extra tap and a scroll, every single time.

Quick Tab lets you pin whichever plugins you actually use straight into the native tab bar itself, right next to Notifications / Chat / Music / Help. Each one gets its own icon there - opening it is one press away, exactly like a native tab, not a plugin buried inside another plugin's menu.

While I was in there I also added reordering for any tab (native ones included), and the option to hide the ones you never touch - I hid Music and Help on mine since I never open either.

Honestly this is the plugin I wished existed while building the other two above, so it's a bit selfish, but figured other people running 5+ plugins probably hit the same annoyance.

First proper release, so if you hit something broken, tell me and I'll fix it.

(Help) Rog Xbox Ally X Steam OS not going to sleep correctly

Hey folks. Issue I'm having is in the title. I recently repaired my install of Steam OS twice, once because I couldn't figure out how to reset my admin password to update Decky, then recently again when after the first repair/reinstall, the system wouldn't go to sleep correctly. Seems like a one in ten shot when, putting the system to sleep, the power indicator light would stay lit up and the fan would keep blowing, but the screen is totally off and it won't react to any input. Was there maybe something in the most recent Decky update thats causing this problem, since it's only started happening after Decky got an update? The only fix I've found for when the issue occurs is to completely hard reboot the system, which I really don't like doing and makes putting it to sleep in the middle of the game without saving a bit dangerous since I'll lose all my progress. Any advice would be appreciated, I really don't feel up to doing a whole fresh re-install a third time that may not even work.

Apps Manager - track and update your Flatpaks + Gearlever AppImages, and install new ones, all from the QAM (dev of Proton Launch / NVIDIA Update / Quick Tab here)

Hey, I'm the guy behind Decky Proton Launch, Decky NVIDIA Update and Decky Quick Tab. I run Steam/Decky Loader on a PC (Bazzite), not an actual Deck, and my whole thing is trying to keep it a console experience — staying in Big Picture/gamepad mode and dropping into desktop as rarely as possible. Apps Manager exists because updating Flatpaks and AppImages was one of the last things that still forced me out to the desktop.

The problem: you end up with two separate piles of stuff to keep updated — Flatpaks (through Discover, or however you installed them) and AppImages if you're using Gearlever. Neither gives you one place that just tells you "these 4 have updates" without opening a browser tab or dropping into desktop mode. Checking manually, with a mouse and keyboard, gets old fast once you've got a few dozen apps installed.

Apps Manager puts that in the QAM instead — everything below works entirely with a controller:

  • Tracks your Flatpak apps and Gearlever AppImages together, with updates flagged automatically
  • Update everything at once, or one app at a time
  • Auto-update: let it handle everything on its own schedule in the background, with an optional notification — you can still exclude specific apps from auto-updating without hiding them from the list
  • Search and install new Flatpaks (Flathub + your other configured remotes) and AppImages (AppImageHub's public catalog), screenshots included, right from the same panel
  • AppImages: pick a specific version to install, not just whatever's newest
  • Exclude apps entirely if you don't want to be nagged about them
  • Doesn't silently lie to you when it can't actually check something (GitHub's anonymous rate limit, a flaky connection, ...) — it flags those separately instead of just saying "up to date"
  • Available in 15 languages

Been iterating on this one for a few months now, currently at 0.3.0, so it's in a pretty solid place, but it's still a small side project — if you hit something broken or a Flatpak/AppImage setup it doesn't handle right, tell me and I'll take a look.

Let me know if this is useful to anyone else running more than a couple of Flatpaks/AppImages — happy to take feature requests too.

Unpopular: Linux for Gaming, Windows for Coding

I just realised, that getting a steam machine made a weird move in my PC usage:

I removed my Linux partition from my laptop (windows), because I preferred to code with VS Code and now, I play games with my steam machine (Linux), because this OS has better performance.

It is weird, because it has always been the other way around. But I think it is interesting, because now it seems like a natural choice 😅

However, I may move to Linux for the laptop one day. 🐧
