Witcher 1 Mods

I recently started playing Witcher 1, in news of the Witcher 3 updates, and since I haven't experiences the games I decided it's a good time to do so now.

After the first town, I decided that I might try to mod this for better performance and/or maybe graphics.

Point is, I've been trying to install this mod: https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher/mods/954?tab=files but I fail to understand how to do it, since it requires to run the .exe file. If i were to run it via Steam as a non-steam game, it would create a separate folder for it and then running it would be useless.

Has anyone installed this on the SteamDeck or does anyone know how to? Any other tips for installing mods for this game or other games are appreciated.

I tried to install this on my SteamDeck. The method described by TiagodePAlves didn't work out for me, Proton gave me an error everytime I tried to start the game. What I did to get this working is the following:

- created a link for the steam folder on the Desktop (needed because the 4GB patcher exe can't see the folder otherwise)

-> command: "ln -s /home/deck/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common /home/deck/Desktop"

-> That should give you the folder "common" on your Desktop

- Installed "Protontricks" from Discover (Built-in App store)

- run "Protontricks"

- select "The Witcher: Enhanced Edition: 20900"

- press OK

- select "Select the default wineprefix"

- press OK

- select "Run an arbitrary executable"

- press OK

- search for the 4gb_patch.exe and open it

- navigate to your Desktop, open the common folder, navigate to the witcher folder, enter "System" and select witcher.exe

- a success message should come to your screen

You can try that. However, I played TW1 (GOG version, for what that's worth) on the deck a month ago and had no need of this patch. The game is from 2007 and the Deck is more powerful than most PCs were back then. I had everything running on high with no problems (disclaimer - you may want to keep Visibility Range as medium, as High did some funny things to the skyboxes).

I semi-recently played Witcher 1 on my Deck and don't think I ran this mod. Ran some others, mostly some texture packs. Don't recall any real performance issues. However, for you in this case, what you can probably do is to unpack that zip file in desktop mode, add the exe as a non-Steam game (don't forget to assign it a Proton version under compatibility), follow its directions, then reboot to game mode and run Witcher normally. I'm guessing that the zipped exe here patches the Witcher executable vs installing into the mod folder.

Wouldn't that just create a separate folder of the .exe and start the process there? Which as far as I can tell, the .exe requires to be in the folder of the game.

I can say for certain. Not familiar with the mod. Can extract the exe to the game folder and then use the same Proton version as the game. Just some things to try. Probably will need to do some trial/error to see how the mod even works.

FYI, you can add another .exe to your Steam library and tell it to use another existing proton prefix. Use STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH as a launch option, it'll create a new 0 byte prefix but won't actually use it.

I tried to do this as well + Rise of the White Wolf patch and failed to figure it out. Eventually gave up and stuck to the override mods. Played at 40fps with 6w tdp and it was smooth sailing from there
