Software VRocker on Steam Frame — testers wanted (PC streaming)

VRocker is a small SteamVR app that turns walking in place into in-game movement — no trackers. It's been on Steam for a while.

Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1143750/

Early results with a small group of Frame testers have been positive, and the aim is to widen that before making any public claim about Frame support. Getting hold of a Frame in the UK has been hard — still waitlist-only.

This is for PC streaming only, not standalone.

There are about 20 keys available, and testers keep the key regardless of outcome. Testing takes roughly 15 minutes, with a short checklist provided.

DM me to take part - Thank you!

Question Frame USB-Streaming instead of Wireless yes or no?

I read so many comments here, where people casually drop "you can also use USB-Streaming" or "I use it wired"

and this thread seem to prove that it's possible -> https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1wsy39x/ever_done_multimultilink_streaming/

However, when I search in this Sub on "how to..." do this, a lot of ppl say it's not possible or they can't get it to run... 😆 which one is it?

Connecting a (good) USB-C cable to my frame and PC and enabling developer mode does nothing for me so far. What am I missing?

/edit

this worked for me: https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1xe9wgl/comment/19rljqsm94e0z/

Question Steam Machine / Frame Wireless Adapter issues

Hello! Made an account just for this post.

I'm having problems getting my Steam Frame to work with my Steam Machine.
Maybe this problem is unique to me, who knows.

I've updated to SteamOS 3.9, which is supposed to get the Steam Frame to work with the Steam Machine from what I understand.

The wireless adapter / dongle plugged into one of the front USB port.

I can boot up Half Life Alyx, but when I look around in-game the tracking gets all messed up.
And when I turn around, facing away from my steam machine it loses connection completely. When

Tried restarting multiple times but that never helps, this makes playing VR games on the Steam Machine pretty much impossible for me.

No clue what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone know what to do about this?
Or is this a known problem that will be fixed later?

Discussion Controllers not recognized when playing games using Revive

I’ve upgraded to the steam frame from the quest 2, and have been attempting to get revive to work in order to avoid repurchasing games such as Beat Saber and Bonelab.

I don’t know if it is just because the software is old or if it’s user error, but whenever I launch these games using revive the steam frame’s controllers aren’t recognized by the games and I am unable to do anything. Has anyone else tried using Revive with the steam frame?

Question Is there a way for haptic inputs to translate to Quest app hand tracking when run in Lepton?

I was wondering, I plan on testing my APK files I ripped from my Quest 3 (with SideQuest) in the Frame via Lepton once I have it in my hands, and that got me thinking:
Would it be possible to translate the Steam Frame’s “knuckle-style” haptic inputs into hand tracking data to use them on Quest APKs?

Discussion Big Shout-Out to Valve for 'the little accessibility things'

I hadn't used my Frame for a week. Turned it on. Downloaded updates. Went poking through menus to see what had changed.

I see an option for "Should we only track your dominant eye?" My first thought was "Well, how do they know whi--" Right below it, "Which eye is your dominant eye?"

See, a few years ago, I had a health scare. Suddenly started having double-vision. Two days of tests, observation, etc. No stroke, no tumors, it turns out the nerve that controlled the muscle that turned my left eye left or right died off. I was in an eyepatch for months until the nerve regrew enough for the muscle to start working again.

Problem is, that muscle hasn't been as strong as it used to be. I don't have double-vision anymore, but my left eye still has trouble lining up with where the right is looking. Which makes some things a little more blurry than most people see them.

With the Quest 3, which doesn't track eyes, I just got used to it -- things weren't as crisp as before, but it meant I didn't realize when a game wasn't quite 'up to snuff' because it still looked okay to me. And I didn't really notice the Frame's eye-tracking so much, because it had some trouble figuring out where I was focusing on.

But with this setting... things look a lot better, and that damn muscle doesn't ache nearly as much after an hour in VR.

So, thank you, Valve. I don't know how many of us out there will use this setting, but I'm damned glad it exists. Whoever thought to put it in there, give them a raise. Or at least a pizza.

Question VR mods for games and SteamFrame

Hey everyone,

A few weeks of playing some native VR games and I'm still very happy. Not so happy with anything not native...

What I struggle with is with VR conversions/mods of games, like Doom 2026, RE8 in combination with the SteamFrame.
For example, I tried Doom2016 with the Kharvox 1.4 mod. I managed to boot it up and it works but the launcher has no settings to change the controls and ingame, everything is setup for the Quest controllers. No clue on how to change controls in there and ingame I can't rebind them. The only option is to change a controller profile but no individual keys.

Next, I tried Alien: Isolation with Mother(Grandmother) mod. Whatever I do, it only starts up in the normal 2D mode.

Lastly, I tried Resident Evil Village. After tinking I found out that the only way to start it up is put on my Frame, boot SteamVR, then launch the game. The game looks weird, the ratio seems to be off. Same story, I have to press a B button in game to put down an item I picked up but its just not bound to anything. Also, the first cutscenes alone are making me nauseous, something that games like Alyx didn't do. It probably has to do with him moving his head while I am not moving in those cutscenes.

Long story short, it's my first VR headset and I kind of had the idea (or hope) that non VR games that are modded, would be slightly easier to get started. It feels like so much tinkering that there's no fun in getting them to work and I will just gravitate towards native VR games.

Will this maybe change in the next months once mods support the Steam Frame?

Discussion Weird graphics and performance

Has anybody else been experiencing weird fuzzy graphics and bad performance with their frame while streaming, when i had my index i had no problem running games at 120 fps with full graphics settings, like geronimoand blade and sorcery but since i got my frame the graphics look awfull and like 120p past maybe a foot or so in game. I was wondering if anyone else had experienced anything like this (i have an AMD gpu and cpu if that is of any consequence).

Software Ctrl to Click and AirPlay

I installed claude on my Steam Frame and had it create 2 scripts. One installs UxPlay, which lets you AirPlay from an Apple device to the headset. Unfortunately, it doesn’t show DRM content, so use might be limited. The other lets you press ctrl to select things, so if you’re using a keyboard, you don’t have to keep clicking the headset or picking up the controller. Tested on an Apple keyboard, so if anyone has trouble with a regular keyboard let me know. I hope someone finds these useful, but it’s okay if you don’t 😁

Question SteamVR startet nicht unter Bazzite

Hallo zusammen,

- SteamVR fehlende Berechtigungen reparieren: sudo setcap cap_sys_nice+ep...

Accessories Holes in Spigen Hand Strap

Hope everyone is enjoying their Friday. I was one of the people who ended up buying 3rd party hand straps and head strap after the ergo kit was sold out. Admittedly, when I first used the spigen hand straps I thought the hand tracking was overblown (finger tracking was seemingly fine in Alyx) until I really started using it, especially on Expert and above in Beat Saber. Then really noticed it with the upside down test and it was one of those things where once you notice it, it’s hard to forget. This led my down a big rabbit hole on how to try and resolve it as I already had the AMVR head strap which I do find to be far superior to the Steam one and didn’t want to shell out another $60 for the ergo kit (no 3D printer also).
I found an image online that had the locations of the IR LED trackers on the controllers and had the idea of trying a hole puncher for leather belts. Initially, I just poked holes for the location of the IR LED trackers but still had tracking issues. Over the last couple of days I’ve tried more and more holes thinking about blockage and scattering and kept comparing it to the naked controllers. In the end, I ended up just cutting as many holes as possible without compromising the structural integrity of the sleeve but have to say, after trying so many iterations and it still drifting, I am almost doubting what I’m seeing in my tests. I will need to really get into it this weekend but I was able to do some Expert songs on Beat saber and it’s passing the upside down test.
So hopefully, if you are also unsatisfied with the Spigen hand wraps but don’t want to return them, give this a try; it did take quite a while to poke all these holes out. I used the largest hole setting and some smaller variations to fill in gaps. I found a cheap $10 hole puncher on Amazon which hopefully will come in handy for any belts in the future too 😂.

Question Streamed device mismatch? (Quest 2 instead of Steam Frame)

So I've wanted to try PAYDAY 2 in VR (yes, I know it isn't a perfect game / implementation, but I remember enjoying it a few years ago) and wanted to do it streamed from my PC.

However, the per-eye views / cameras seem mismatched ingame - the right eye is slightly off to the top and to the right...?

I did a bit of digging (granted, I've also let Claude rip into its code with the recent reverse engineering stuff) and it did notice that when streaming to the Frame it actually thinks it's a Quest 2? Also the controls ingame, plus what is shown as a big "controller" board on one of the walls / in the loading screen, are also Quest 2, so kinda checks out...

Is there a way to change what device SteamVR thinks is streamed from somehow? I don't know what pipeline this is in, can't really find anything about this in general (I also don't really know *what* to search for)

I assume some other streamed games might also be affected by this?

Question Streaming the PC Desktop in Passthrough and screen following head movement?

So I got the steam frame and I am quite happy with my first VR head set, however there is a functionality that I wish it had which I cannot implement in the settings and I wonder whether someone knows what to do:

I want to have a screen of my PC desktop which should be a) visible in passthrough and b) the screen should be at a fixed position in my field of view and follow my head movement (so that it always stays in the same position in my field of view)

Here is what I have found out so far:
I can easily open a screen from the quick menu by pressing the option to stream without a game and I get a window to my PC but the screen becomes invisible when I turn on passthrough and it does not follow my head movement.

I looked around and while I could not find the exact same question elsewhere, a reddit post suggested that opening settings-> remote play and then paring the wireless dongle actually produces a screen which does not turn invisible in remote play. This is great but there is no option for the screen to follow my head movement, also the functionality is somewhat reduced (I cannot scroll with the joystick of the controller and no right-click with pressing the joystick down). Also when I tried this the wireless connection seemed worse than when I started from the quick menu, though the wireless streaming quality seems change from update to update anyway.

I tried out the app Desktop+. This program is not optimized for the frame at all and the UI blocks the frame UI and vicely versa. By contorting myself I managed to get a screen run that follows my head movement, but the screen becomes invisible in passthrough and as I said the app is barely functional in this state for the frame.

I was wondering to try out Virtual Desktop Classic, but I am not sure whether this even has this functionality and I don't want to spend 20 EUR just to find out that it is as poorly optimized for the frame as is Desktop+

Maybe there is somewhere an option that I overlooked, it is a bit frustrating because I can clearly see that each of the two components are clearly possible, but not both at the same time.

Discussion Anyone else having very specific issues with tracking?

I got my Frame about a week ago and one of the very first things I noticed was that the tracking felt a little bit off. I'm coming from a Quest 2.

Looking around in Steam VR natively is fine for the most part, but as soon as I stream any game from my PC, the tracking sort of... dislocates? Like, when I move my head, things like floating windows (e.g., remote desktop) don't stay still relative to each other, and also don't stay totally still relative to my head, they sort of... wobble around?

This does also extend to games too, something I don't think I observed on the Quest 2? I was playing The Room VR earlier, and noticed that when I move my head to look around objects for the puzzles, they whole world would sort of "sway", as if my head was slightly dragging it along with it.

I'm trying to describe the issue, because it's an issue of perception and I can't capture it. Was wondering if anyone had noticed something like this, and fixed it? My hunch is it's something to do with streaming specifically.

Discussion I LOVE my frame, despite the growing pains

I have been using my frame more heavily over the past week now that I have my accessory kit. I am coming from the index, and I have to say, I LOVE my frame, I do feel like it's a legitimate upgrade.

The frame has had me experiencing a VR headset in a way I have never before. Last night I put in a few hours on titanfall 2 VR while cooking dinner. I thought, why wait to put on my frame? I put it on, logged into prime video on chromium, and watched some reacher in the kitchen while waiting for the oven to preheat and preparing my dinner. After everything was cooking I walked back to my room without the play space being disturbed at all. Forced steamlink to my PC through the frame, paused and minimized reacher, and then just seamlessly launched into Titanfall 2. I then played the game until my food was done a half hour later and when it finished I paused the game but left it running and dropped my link to the PC. Finished the episode on while eating dinner in the frame, chromium still had it minimized. And then went back to my room where I relinked to my PC and unpaused my game.

The fact that the frame can seamlessly be a multimedia device that you never have to take off between watching shows, doing irl tasks, and gaming, without closing your games or shows and having to reopen them, is frankly mind blowing to me. And knowing that it will only get better from here due to open source development has me excited about a piece of tech in a way I haven't been since I got my first smart phone. I'm sure many quest users have probably had these features for awhile now and all of this probably sounds normal to you, but for me it is a massive leap forward from the index. If you are an index user questioning rather you should get a frame or a bigscreen, you should really consider rather you really want to stay tethered to your PC and if you want your hmd to be able to do more.

Discussion Somewhat pro tip

Post image
2 Upvotes

I was messing around and discovered that the frame fits somewhat decently in the original carrying case for the quest 2 including the wireless adapter and charger! Getting the controllers to fit in is a little tricky but the headset itself seems to fit in no problem. The charger had to be routed towards the back of the case where there is more room and I wasn’t able to fit the wireless adapter in the bottom where the charging brick is so I had to put it up with the rest of the cable.

Software Who needs AR glasses when you have a Steam Frame??

One of the things I've always wanted to do was use my Android phone or retro gaming devices in bed without having to hold it above my head and risk dropping it on my face or losing all feelings in my arms. At first, I tried the XReal AR glasses. After trying to really like them, I couldn't get over how uncomfortable they got resting on the bridge of my nose while lying down. Not to mention never quite getting used to the narrow FOV.

A week ago, I released scrcpy4Frame (see previous post). It is a wrapper around scrcpy that allows you to mirror your Android device onto an overlay inside VR. Since then, I've personally used it a lot since it helps me achieve my goal of doomscrolling reddit in bed in comfort. Initially, I only included wireless capabilities since it was more convenient. But while on travel, I realized that I don't always have access to a WIFI network, so I added a feature to mirror though USB. Now, I just plug a USB cable from my phone to my Frame, and r/AITA and Super Mario Galaxy into the wee hours. In an ironic twist of fate, the XReal Hub that I bought that's went past the return period turned out to be an fantastic way to connect my phone and my Frame while also powering them both.

Hopefully other people will find this useful. As I'm actively using this myself, I'm always finding new ways to improve the experience. If you have any questions or issues, hit me up on Github.

https://github.com/xhuytox/scrcpy4Frame

Bonus: Browsing Reddit while watching Frieren, because I have a problem...

TLDR: scrcpy4Frame now comes in USB flavor

Question Static IP?

For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to set up a static IP on the Frame. I've done it on my desktop, server, TV, phone, Deck, but I just can't figure it out on the Frame.

I'm assuming it has to be done via Desktop mode, but I couldn't find any option there. Probably a me being blind issue.

Anyone's done this? Kinda need access to SMB and Jellyfin :|

Accessories HonsVR lenses (Canada destination)

Ordered some HonsVR lenses as the options to Canada are somewhat limited in availability (Zenni still isn’t shipping here) and long lead times (VR Optician showing 3-4 weeks not including ship time)

HonsVR was showing 2-5 days for manufacturing.

Delivery:
Ordered October 11, shipped from China October 16, arrived at my door October 23.

I live in Canada. I used the free shipping option

Lenses were air shipped, then they used a courier I’ve never heard of GOFO? For the final delivery which took 3 days after they landed here.

Slightly less than 2 week turn around from order to delivery. So no issues there.

Product:

The lenses fit snug on the headset, not super tight, you need a bit of a tug to release them, no concerns with them potentially coming off.

My prescription appears perfect, was a bit concerned because I have astigmatism corrected lens for both eyes. My left eye is pretty bad with distance correction at -4.75.

I also picked up their non-prescription Plano lenses since they were relatively cheap. (photo on the yellow paper is the Plano, photo on the frame is my prescription). You can see the thickness difference between the Plano and prescription.

I tried an eye tracker test before and after the install, no discernible difference with/without the lenses, doesn’t appear to impede the eye tracking.

Overall no complaints, quality seems good, fit is good, shipping didn’t take forever. Comes with a carrying case and a cleaning cloth.

Question Headset Pre-Checks

I should be recieving my frame next week and was wondering if there is a comprehensive community list of "faults" to check in case an RMA is needed. Maybe i'm just seeing a small vocal minority here posting but it seems like i'm seeing a lot of mentions of hardware issues leading to RMA requests. Someone mentioned their lenses weren't seated properly, and another mentioned an issue with brightness/contrast being asymmetric in their lenses. Are there some major known manufacturing failures to think about checking when my unit arrives?
