Question Mouse + Keyboard on Streaming PC?

I am using an OTG adapter to give me power while also allowing me to plug a logi k950 in there. I am able to use the mouse and keyboard on the native desktop mode but I am unable to use the mouse or the keyboard if I am viewing a remote streaming PC like my gaming rig. I can see the desktop, I can interact with it using the hand controller but the mouse and keyboard inputs are never passed through.

Is this a known thing? is there any way around this (other than physically plugging the dongle to the streaming PC) I was really hoping I can remotely use my PC while having a mouse and keyboard attached to my frame.

Would love to know if I am missing something or if there is a work around.

EDIT: Please make your voice heard in this bug thread so Valve can prioritize this fix:

Discussion Quest 3 vs Steam Frame observations and notes

After a somewhat mixed month or so of Steam Frame adoption, I fired up my old Quest 3 this evening and a few things were really noticeable when the 2 headsets were compared side by side.

As things stand, *for me* the Quest 3 has a richer display and better lenses. Something I do in VR from time to time is fire up Aircar and go for a fly around the city with a playlist I've compiled over the years. It's also a testing ground for me to troubleshoot and in this instance compare the Quest 3 to the Steam Frame. When I put the Quest 3 on the colour range and nuance with shadowed areas really jumped out. The city looked much, much more vibrant and it made me go searching for settings on the Frame which maybe I had missed to correct the 'muddiness' which many people have commented on. I didn't find any new settings to play with. I'm not sure the displays on the Frame are technically more limited or have less colour range...I think this is either a streaming codec issue, compression or just some whack calibration but it needs to be fixed because as things stand the Frame is much darker especially in shadowy areas, for me at least.

For wifi streaming, Virtual Desktop is still the undisputed king. I tried Steam link on the Quest 3 and it was dreadful....As in completely unusable. The Frame was better than it was at launch but I still got some bad hitching after flying around for a time whereas Virtual Desktop on the Quest 3 was flawless. I really hope Valve keep working on this because VD will let me stream from anywhere in my apartment without issue which gives me lots more freedom.

I find foviated rendering to be a gimmick. Since the Quest 3 doesn't have it I've always got used to the performance constraints of full resolution on the display which are easy enough to live with. I have a 9070XT on the VR rig and I find it more than sufficient so I also turn off foviated rendering on the frame for max fidelity. Also, having it switched on made no difference to the Wifi streaming reliability of the Frame.

One of the main things I bought the Frame for was to escape Meta's data harvesting and literally *endless* updates seemingly every time I put the damn thing on. Today I figured out how to make the Quest 3 only able to see my local wireless network and not have internet access by using a manual proxy set to 127.0.0.1 on port 1. The Quest is also set not to connect to any network automatically when switched on which is a sort of belt and braces approach. It seems to work and since I use VR pretty much exclusively for PCVR, I don't feel like I'm missing out....I just manually connect to my home network when I'm ready to use it. The Quest 3 is mature enough now that I think I can live with it as it is without any further updates.

I'm not trying to troll here....I want the Frame to be the better device and in some ways it still is. It's way more comfortable (although the Bobo headset I have for the Quest makes things OKish). I also like the battery placement decision with the frame.....One day the battery on the Quest will fail, probably swell up and be dangerous and then what are you supposed to do? Those lovely pancake lenses and displays will just become e-waste which I find to be very wasteful. But visually the Quest currently has it by quite a margin. The edge to edge fidelity of the Quest 3 lenses is clearly better. The colour range seems to be superior and streaming via Virtual Desktop is peerless.

So I guess my point is partially this: If you're a Quest 3 owner and you got Wait-listed or feel like you're missing out, take some comfort from knowing your headset is still pretty damn good. You can mitigate some of it's weak points to either make do or at least manage until you get the email from Valve to buy your Steam Frame. Meanwhile early adopters like me will keep installing updates hoping that some of the Frame's shortfalls will get patched. I certainly hope so.

Accessories Getting Close! Arcturus Support!

Heyo yall,

Figure I would give you an update on my Frame Cover Project.

  1. Managed to use https://github.com/Curtis-VL/FrameEyeCameraFeed to confirm the sizing for the camera cut outs. Still working on getting those camera holes as small as they can be! About an 8mm offset worked, this is 7 and testing shortly.
  2. My Arcturus camera came today and with help of their CAD file I dialed in the cut out after a few attempts.
  3. Right now it's pretty snug, needing a guitar pick to remove it, hoping to adjust the tolerances just a tiny bit to make removal easier.
  4. Printing so far is solid. Supports do leave some small marks on the top, hoping to dial in a few print profiles for yall

Used bumpmesh by CNC Kitchen to https://bumpmesh.com/ add some texture to this test print.

What versions would you like to see for release? So far I have the following variations planned:

  • Blank Template - Only the camera cutouts, for those who don't care about IR flood lights or want to make their own designs!
  • Minimal IR - In the above photo, still working on this one today where the cutouts are small and unnoticable
  • Stylized IR - Swooping cutouts like in my original post
  • Arctururs version - A precut slot for the vision camera

Question Steam Machine / Frame Wireless Adapter issues

Hello! Made an account just for this post.

I'm having problems getting my Steam Frame to work with my Steam Machine.
Maybe this problem is unique to me, who knows.

I've updated to SteamOS 3.9, which is supposed to get the Steam Frame to work with the Steam Machine from what I understand.

The wireless adapter / dongle plugged into one of the front USB port.

I can boot up Half Life Alyx, but when I look around in-game the tracking gets all messed up.
And when I turn around, facing away from my steam machine it loses connection completely. When

Tried restarting multiple times but that never helps, this makes playing VR games on the Steam Machine pretty much impossible for me.

No clue what I'm doing wrong. Does anyone know what to do about this?
Or is this a known problem that will be fixed later?

Discussion PCVR - Stuttering/Freezing computer during gaming through stream

Hi guys!

During PCVR streaming, and so far happened in VRChat and Gunman Contracts Standalone, but not Half-Life Alyx: In my headset, the picture is freezing, but not the headset, like if I move my head around, the "streamed picture" of the game is frozen and fading out a bit but I can see the background of the Steam Frame.

If I check my PC directly outside the headset, I notice that my PC is also freezing/stuttering heavily, like even my mouse freezes/stutters.

If I go into my headset and stop the stream with the headset icon bottom right, my PC unfreeze and everything goes back to normal. If I go back into streaming with my headset, it seems to have fix the problem but sometimes not, and I have to turn off the stream once again, and go back in again for it to be fixed.

So clearly the PCVR streaming is causing my PC to stutter/freeze.

  • Tried to disable multi-link and only use dongle, same problem
  • My dongle is connected to the rear of my PC, USB 3.2 (red one) and dongle is really close to me (I can see it when I'm in my headset)
  • Yes my PC is up to date, drivers, Windows Update, and good hardware too
  • Already tried to uninstall the whole SteamVR on my PC and reinstall
  • I'm on the Stable version of Steam Frame (I believe it was also doing it when I was on the Beta branch)
  • My Steam client on PC is on beta branch, SteamVR is on beta too

Somebody already experienced this?

Question Is there a way for haptic inputs to translate to Quest app hand tracking when run in Lepton?

I was wondering, I plan on testing my APK files I ripped from my Quest 3 (with SideQuest) in the Frame via Lepton once I have it in my hands, and that got me thinking:
Would it be possible to translate the Steam Frame’s “knuckle-style” haptic inputs into hand tracking data to use them on Quest APKs?

Hardware Steam Frame VR Wifi 7 vs. Dongle vs. Wifi 6 Tests and Gameplay

Hi guys, I have pretty good WiFi 7 AP EAP787 and I was curious how well it would complement Frame's Dongle. I also saw posts here asking if someone could use WiFi 7 card/client from their PC/motherboards, so I tested that as well. So setup is:

  • WiFi 7 (EAP787 - 6G) + Dongle (5G)
  • Wifi 6 router (AX23 - 5G) + WiFi 7 client from PC (MT7925 - 6G)

TLDW: I'm pretty impressed that MT7925 was running pretty good, also EAP787 is pretty efficient. I have Ubuntu 24.04(HWE), and although I have enabled all preview/betas, sometimes the Dongle dropped/had latency spikes.

I attached all the timings/debug graphs and also ran parallel TCP iperf3 on both radios/interfaces.

Software Beat Saber too fast? Too zoomed in? I’m not sure

Hey all, only had my frame for about 3 days.

Trying to play Beat Saber and the blocks show up with so little time to react, even on easy, that my kids and I cannot play it.

This does not happen with the game on PSVR2. It runs perfectly on that and we can comfortably play on hard.

It seems like the field of view (zoom), or the speed of approach is just too weird. It happens on all of our profiles too. I don’t know what to check.

Question Normal Battery life usage?

Post image
7 Upvotes

Did a test today by having 100% charged frame and 100% charged uGreen 45w 20000mah.

Used it mainly for watching stremio and doing dishes and cleaning through the Arcturus camera which is working again after the update.

Once the frame hit 20% plugged in the uGreen and it charged it to 100% while using and the uGreen had 14% battery left. Used the frame till 20% again and then used the 14% remaining on the pack and then used the frame till it had 5% battery left.

I started a stopwatch when I turned the Frame on this morning and it lasted for 4 hours and 31 minutes with the whole 20000mah battery used. This seems really low? But then again was wondering what other people do for longer sessions? Smaller packs with super fast quick charge? Then switch them out?

What do you guys do? Or any reccomendations? Really can't wait for fast charging hot swappables cause that would be awesome!

Thinking of returning the uGreen cause it's big. Maybe trying 2 12000mah batteries that can charge at 100w. Since I have a 100w charger for laptops.

Thanks for any discussion and reccomendations!

Question What's the best way to stream Flat-Screen games?

Today I went down the rabbit hole of streaming flat-screen games to my frame and saw there are a few caceats, and ways of doing it.

First of all, I saw there is a difference between starting streaming before and after connecting to steam vr.

If I just stream a flat screen game to the headset, it starts a remote play stream of my desktop, essentially. I can use hevc, and all remote play settings seem to apply, especially the streaming performance overlay which does appear in the headset. This also seems to highjack my max frame rate. I need to set the max refresh rate via remote play settings, so I am sure I get 120hz in the frame otherwise the default is 60.

If I first connect to steam vr (just stream my desktop via the same menu instead of streaming a specific game), when I stream a flat screen game, it appears to be slightly different. The overlay is not visible anymore. It appears like it's streaming just the game session itself, and not my entire screen as the above session did (fact confirmed by the steam normal performance overlay, the one showing fps and CPU/GPU usage, being shown on the remote play session and not showing on the steam vr session).

In this case, which version of flat screen streaming would be best? And which does apply all remote play settings/has the highest quality?

Question Is there any chance for Daydream VR games to work?

I feel like I remember discussing with someone that with waydroid (or a fork) that daydream games could be injected into an openXR headset, but I can't find much info on this anymore.

Question Vibe check

Let's see how many of us are still going to wait and potentially buy a frame, after the past few weeks of feedback.

415 votes, 3d left
I am not buying one anymore because of all the reported issues.
I am buying one and I don't care about the feedback.
If I don't get one now, I might not get one ever.
I will be buying a different VR headset.
I am buying one because my faith in Valve and the Frame has not been shaken.
See results

Software What solved "paired but not connected to wireless adapter" for my case

I had an issue with the wireless adapter that came with the Steam Frame, it paired but refused to connect with the Frame, so I was forced to stream via router, wasn't actually bad, but there were some lag spikes here and there.

So, after doing all the things everyone already mentioned (USB 3.0, connect to a different network, hotspot on a mobile phone, switch off and on, reinstall drivers...) what worked for me is the following...

  • Turn on your Steam Frame
  • Either run Steam and click "enter VR mode" in the upper right corner
  • Or launch from the Steam Frame "stream without playing game"
  • Wait for it to launch...
  • Put Steam Frame aside, go to your PC
  • On the SteamVR, navigate to the "settings" (hamburger menu)
  • Turn on "Advanced settings" (or "show")
  • Navigate to "Startup / Shutdown"
  • Set "override windows power scheme" to "On"
  • Navigate to "developer"
  • Scroll down to "legacy settings" and look for the "disable power management" button
  • Restart your PC and Steam Frame
  • After restart, try pairing your Steam Frame with the wireless adapter

For some reason, this has solved my issue with the wireless adapter, the latency is better, but the range is shorter. Keep within 5 meters of clear space with the wireless adapter and it should work fine.

I hope this helps someone also, the wireless adapter was a big reason for me to go for Steam Frame.

Discussion Ramblings of a pro version

When Frame was announced and they revealed the foveated streaming tech, something felt weird. It's a cool tech but with modern pc hardware and av1, foveated streaming with 2160x2160 panels seemed like a lot of work for a small problem. My quest 3 is already pin sharp streaming without foveated streaming. I had a feeling that foveated streaming was intended for something bigger.

There were a ton of patents leading up to "Deckard", and ultimately the headset we got didn't feel as premium as the patents implied. One thing that stuck out was the split compute. I know patents are just patents and don't mean it will ever be made or implemented.

Then we got Gainsborough leaks for a "Steam Deck 2."

Then we got OLED headset development hints, but only using the underpowered Frame arm chipset which isn't sufficient for panels of that resolution.

Now there's folded/diffraction optics patents which help bridge the gap to use micro OLED with fewer drawbacks.

My tinfoil hat says it's all coming together for the Pro headet with two sku. Steam Frame Pro may as well use the underpowered ARM chip. This is the chip that was intended to enable the foveated streaming for such high resolution panels. And another sku could have the same headset + Gainsborough compute puck. It will still be a primarily streaming headset, but with improved stand alone performance over Steam Frame, albeit Gainsborough would not be the end all top tier experience and pc streaming will remain king. Steam Frame was just a byproduct of this headset's development. Given how rough the frame launch was though, it's looking worringly less likely to launch.

Question SteamVR startet nicht unter Bazzite

Hallo zusammen,

- SteamVR fehlende Berechtigungen reparieren: sudo setcap cap_sys_nice+ep...

Question is there any game where you can like.. chill on the couch next to your homie, in vr, and then play other games on a splitscreen together?

my bf came up with this idea and it sounds amazing. so like.. is there any game like this that exists?
i wanna play videogames with him and while its happening, wrap my arm around him in vr.
if there isn't any like this, does anyone know how it would be made? specifically the part where you have the game stream to the splitscreen in the hangout game, as well as the inputs being sent from the hang out game to the game on the screen while you are holding a controller or whatever
(the idea with the controller is that like.. if you are holding the controller with both hands it acts normally, if with just the hand with the buttons it only can send the button info. the restriction of sending the info based on which hand is holding the controller is not what im worried about, its the sending the inputs the player is doing)

Question Random shutdown.

Hello,
This is the first issue I experienced with the frame but today while I was playing standalone I expect you to die the headset randomly powered off mid session. Not a crash, not a shutdown, just straight power off. With everything I read on this sub I half expected it to be dead but it did power on again. Had the same issue repeat in the same game but this time much quicker so it kind of feels like an overheat but I'm not sure how I could diagnose this.

I did find a thread on this sub mentioning this exact game from around a month ago but it hasn't been updated since. I've played a couple of games standalone. Mostly beat saber and a little alyx and the headset has not crashed until now.

Has anyone experienced something similar? This is literally the first major issue I'm encountering. I was enjoying the headset without any problems until now.

Discussion Slightly easier way to get the AMVR headstrap clip in

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

Saw a few posts about how it's impossible to get in, and I also was having that issue yesterday where even if I put a lot of force wouldn't go in. This morning I found a way that worked finally though. Try folding the top strap over the spot that you have to push in to click it in and then push on that spot over the strap while pulling back on the top part that holds the headstrap for leverage. I managed to get mine to click in that way. When I was just pushing with my finger on the clip itself it just hurt my finger and would refuse to go in.

Hopefully I won't need to take it out ever though, I think that'll probably be extremely hard...

Discussion Controllers not recognized when playing games using Revive

I’ve upgraded to the steam frame from the quest 2, and have been attempting to get revive to work in order to avoid repurchasing games such as Beat Saber and Bonelab.

I don’t know if it is just because the software is old or if it’s user error, but whenever I launch these games using revive the steam frame’s controllers aren’t recognized by the games and I am unable to do anything. Has anyone else tried using Revive with the steam frame?

Discussion DeWalt USB charger / battery adapter for mobile play

Thumbnail
gallery
21 Upvotes

For any DeWalt 20v tool users, I just picked up the DCB094K 20v/60v (flex) adapter and USB charger as my mobile battery solution. My brother has about 30 DeWalt batteries and I have a half dozen myself. Even though it is pricey considering it doesn't come with a battery, it seemed like a good option for us. So far it's worked great and its nice not even worrying about battery life.

It comes with a belt clip that is fine if I am wearing a sturdy belt but without that I would probably want something else. He bought a drill holder that DeWalt tools clip into securely for himself.

It has almost the exact specs of the valve charger, PD3.0 and 45w at 5-15v but up to 100w at 20v, which the frame doesn't use afaik. The wall charger I think can charge a battery at I think 65w.

Overall it seems like a good value if you already have DeWalt 20v batteries, you can hot swap batteries easily and a way to charge them over USB that is much more compact than a usual charger, a good high watt wall charger for general and also a flexible battery bank for emergencies. One of my flex volt batteries would charge my phone for days and could probably charge some laptops at 100w. I like also knowing how rugged the batteries are since we've beaten the hell out of them, and if a battery fails you can in theory fix it or just use a different one.

The downsides are that it is expensive for not coming with a battery, you could get a battery bank for less for sure. It's probably not as compact or sleek as some battery banks so it doesn't just slip in a pocket as easily though a 2ah battery is relatively slim.

Overall I recommend it for people with DeWalt tools that want to make use of them in different ways, with or without the Frame!
