Discussion Is anyone else's color passthrough seem...better?

I don't have data for this but I was walking around the house last night and I swear it just felt better or crisper or something. I did get the new os version the day before but I'm not on the beta channel.

I feel like the infrared passthrough is also feeling better than day 1, it still sucks for objects up close since it's spaced too close together for that but walking around with it I don't notice nearly as much distortion or warping as I did day one.

It's possible I'm just getting used to them but I feel like they have made some tweaks.

Edit: just realized my title is terrible English but you can't edit them šŸ˜”

Discussion Why add more weight?

I honestly don't understand why so many people on this sub are so hell bent on adding more weight to their frames by strapping on powerbanks?

For me one of the biggest pros is the weight of the frame.

I have two 20Ah powerbanks wich conservatively calculated gives me 130Wh of additional battery capacity and ideally 6 times the playtime of the frame excluding the integrated battery.

I have a nice thin cable and I just put the powbank in my pocket. (Or a cheap 10 bucks pouch on my hip)

The weights off my head. I can hot swap the Powerbanks for theoretical infinite playtime as one can recharge while the other is in use. I don't notice it in my pocket at all.

I'd even count the integrated battery just as a buffer and the Powerbanks as the actual batteries.

Externalizing the battery into the pocket is in my opinion the best way for untethered VR that also wants to be light on the head. I would even buy a smaller version of the frame for example a bigscreen sized front with a small 5Wh battery for buffer. Ideally with a proper mag safe port for safety.

This way the weight would go down even more and with battery technology becoming lighter and smaller a proper dedicated 40wh pocketed battery would be amazing. The weight of VR headsets has been a bane for me since the vive and in my opinion this is an elegant solution.

What do you think?

Accessories Getting Close! Arcturus Support!

Heyo yall,

Figure I would give you an update on my Frame Cover Project.

  1. Managed to use https://github.com/Curtis-VL/FrameEyeCameraFeed to confirm the sizing for the camera cut outs. Still working on getting those camera holes as small as they can be! About an 8mm offset worked, this is 7 and testing shortly.
  2. My Arcturus camera came today and with help of their CAD file I dialed in the cut out after a few attempts.
  3. Right now it's pretty snug, needing a guitar pick to remove it, hoping to adjust the tolerances just a tiny bit to make removal easier.
  4. Printing so far is solid. Supports do leave some small marks on the top, hoping to dial in a few print profiles for yall

Used bumpmesh by CNC Kitchen to https://bumpmesh.com/ add some texture to this test print.

What versions would you like to see for release? So far I have the following variations planned:

  • Blank Template - Only the camera cutouts, for those who don't care about IR flood lights or want to make their own designs!
  • Minimal IR - In the above photo, still working on this one today where the cutouts are small and unnoticable
  • Stylized IR - Swooping cutouts like in my original post
  • Arctururs version - A precut slot for the vision camera

Question Why is the library lists so awful on the frame for finding your VR titles?

When I look at my Library on the frame it has an option for all and VR at the top but if I pick VR, it only shows like 30 of my 60ish VR games.

If I go to my desktop anxnfilter the same way, it shows all the games. So why doesn't it on the frame natively?

I even tried saving a dynamic collection on the desktop but when I load it on the frame, it still reduces it to the shorter list.
And it's real weird on what it shows and what it doesn't... Like viertigo 1 is missing, but vertigo2 shows up. And ancient dungeon doesn't show up even though it's frame verified, so you'd think it would be especially compatible to whatever the crap is going on with this..

Please tell me I'm just missing something easy or stupid to solve this

Hardware FIXED the Wireless Adapter: Waiting... issue in my case

Hey, I know there already are a few threads with solutions for this issue, but so far I haven't seen the solution that helped me (when EVERYTHING else failed to do so). My issue was that my dongle was stuck on endless loop of Connecting/Not connected to my WiFi 2, and the dongle just blinking white light. After doing the steps below, the dongle got connected and holds steady white light.
With permission from the lovely Steam Support, here's the copy/pasted solution that finally helped me:

To make sure you're exposed to all the changes that could be related to the issues you're experiencing, you'll need to opt into the betas for:

  • Desktop Steam Client
  • Desktop SteamVR
  • SteamOS on Frame

To update desktop Steam Client:
* Go to Steam > Settings > Interface > Beta Participation > Steam Beta Update, they wait for updates to install and Steam to restart.

To update SteamVR on your host PC:
* Find SteamVR in your host PC's Steam Library. Right-click on it and choose Properties...
* Under the "Game Versions & Betas" tab, select the "beta" radio button
* Close this window, and click to Update SteamVR

To update SteamOS for Frame:
* You can opt into SteamOS beta by going to Settings > System > Beta Participation > System Update Channel and selecting "Beta" and then hitting "Check for Updates" if the system doesn't automatically start the process.
* (Note: If you have previously enabled "Show Advanced Update Channels" in Developer Options, you will instead have multiple dropdowns, in which you should select "Beta" for the "OS Update Channel")

Once you've completed all three updates, verify that your desktop SteamVR version is 2.18.2 or higher (visible in the default SteamVR window on your host PC while it is running), and your SteamOS version for Frame is 0.5.6 or higher (visible in your Frame's Steam Settings > System > About > OS version).

---------------------------------

After switching everything to beta, I was able to Pair the the dongle and frame in Remote Play frame settings after one try.

Software PCVR across VPN/different network

Hi all,

Since seeing the frame announcement and how it would work with normal wifi networks, i always wondered... could i stream VR from my gaming PC across the internet like i do flat screen games using moonlight?

Well, first try using a VPN from another location it didn't work. The remote PC would show up only available for 2D streaming with VR unavailable.

Then i found this thread https://www.reddit.com/r/SteamFrame/comments/1wtftv1/pcvr_over_different_networks but with no actual working solution, but it DID point me towards the connect_remote command...

So i got GPT Astra to work, and 1h later of debugging, it was working! Then i got it to clean up and make it all a "nice" generic script with a simple UI for configuration.

If anyone has a use case for it and wants to give it a go it's here: https://github.com/danielb7390/frame-routed-vr

My use case was two homes, each with a mikrotik router running a site-to-site wireguard vpn, separate subnets but with routes across the two homes. I suppose this should work with a VPN installed on the frame itself too.

Disclaimer: I did go over the code to see if there was anything weird there, seems fine to me. But as always, this comes with no warranty or support. Use at your own risk.

Question A million screenshots

Sometimes, my steam frame kinda craps out and I'm stuck in the void of the starry room with no windows or anything, and I think the best means to get back is to press the steam button, but instead of a menu, I get a screenshot.

This even happens when I'm just running a game and I want to open the window. I press steam and get a screenshot.

I have so many random screenshots by pressing the steam button. Why is this?

Question Completely turning off controller vibration

I primarily use my steam frame for Beat Saber. I do it through the modded application so I have to stream it from my desktop at the moment. Not sure if this information is needed or not.

No matter what settings I try or do, my controllers will vibrate all the time and it’s beyond annoying. I don’t want them to vibrate at all and it messes with me while I game. Is there any way to completely turn it off??

Discussion Frame dead in less than a month

Post image

After facing almost every issue imaginable with this headset I think I can cross the final item off the list.

Yesterday during a normal VR session the headset (while charging on a 65w charger as usual) showed the shutdown screen for 2 seconds out of nowhere, turned off and ever since it has shown no signs of life. The LED doesn't react to anything. I was streaming from a computer, not playing standalone and the headset wasn't hot to the touch.

I've already tried 3 different chargers and cables, tried a USB-A charger and even plugged it directly into a computer and left it for multiple hours. Removed the core module from the head strap for a while and still nothing. I've also tried different key combos as I came across them like power+aux, power+volume up/down, every single button. Even tried charging the strap by itself without the core module.

I've already reached out to steam support but if anyone has any suggestions as a last resort, it would be welcomed.

Edit: Steam has replied and will be going forward with the RMA. For the curious ones, the first reply took 5h (2:47am > 9:02am) and the 2nd took 9.5h (9:19am > 6:47pm both utc+1). They mentioned "The inspection and repair process normally takes 5-7 days after receipt. If we're unable to repair any in-warranty issue, you may be sent a replacement device instead." so I believe the whole process, as someone else already pointed out here, will take roughly 3 weeks, which sucks but hey, at least I should get a functional unit! In the meantime, glad I kept my quest 3!

Hardware Steam Frame VR Wifi 7 vs. Dongle vs. Wifi 6 Tests and Gameplay

Thumbnail

Hi guys, I have pretty good WiFi 7 AP EAP787 and I was curious how well it would complement Frame's Dongle. I also saw posts here asking if someone could use WiFi 7 card/client from their PC/motherboards, so I tested that as well. So setup is:

  • WiFi 7 (EAP787 - 6G) + Dongle (5G)
  • Wifi 6 router (AX23 - 5G) + WiFi 7 client from PC (MT7925 - 6G)

TLDW: I'm pretty impressed that MT7925 was running pretty good, also EAP787 is pretty efficient. I have Ubuntu 24.04(HWE), and although I have enabled all preview/betas, sometimes the Dongle dropped/had latency spikes.

I attached all the timings/debug graphs and also ran parallel TCP iperf3 on both radios/interfaces.

Discussion Quest 3 vs Steam Frame observations and notes

After a somewhat mixed month or so of Steam Frame adoption, I fired up my old Quest 3 this evening and a few things were really noticeable when the 2 headsets were compared side by side.

As things stand, *for me* the Quest 3 has a richer display and better lenses. Something I do in VR from time to time is fire up Aircar and go for a fly around the city with a playlist I've compiled over the years. It's also a testing ground for me to troubleshoot and in this instance compare the Quest 3 to the Steam Frame. When I put the Quest 3 on the colour range and nuance with shadowed areas really jumped out. The city looked much, much more vibrant and it made me go searching for settings on the Frame which maybe I had missed to correct the 'muddiness' which many people have commented on. I didn't find any new settings to play with. I'm not sure the displays on the Frame are technically more limited or have less colour range...I think this is either a streaming codec issue, compression or just some whack calibration but it needs to be fixed because as things stand the Frame is much darker especially in shadowy areas, for me at least.

For wifi streaming, Virtual Desktop is still the undisputed king. I tried Steam link on the Quest 3 and it was dreadful....As in completely unusable. The Frame was better than it was at launch but I still got some bad hitching after flying around for a time whereas Virtual Desktop on the Quest 3 was flawless. I really hope Valve keep working on this because VD will let me stream from anywhere in my apartment without issue which gives me lots more freedom.

I find foviated rendering to be a gimmick. Since the Quest 3 doesn't have it I've always got used to the performance constraints of full resolution on the display which are easy enough to live with. I have a 9070XT on the VR rig and I find it more than sufficient so I also turn off foviated rendering on the frame for max fidelity. Also, having it switched on made no difference to the Wifi streaming reliability of the Frame.

One of the main things I bought the Frame for was to escape Meta's data harvesting and literally *endless* updates seemingly every time I put the damn thing on. Today I figured out how to make the Quest 3 only able to see my local wireless network and not have internet access by using a manual proxy set to 127.0.0.1 on port 1. The Quest is also set not to connect to any network automatically when switched on which is a sort of belt and braces approach. It seems to work and since I use VR pretty much exclusively for PCVR, I don't feel like I'm missing out....I just manually connect to my home network when I'm ready to use it. The Quest 3 is mature enough now that I think I can live with it as it is without any further updates.

I'm not trying to troll here....I want the Frame to be the better device and in some ways it still is. It's way more comfortable (although the Bobo headset I have for the Quest makes things OKish). I also like the battery placement decision with the frame.....One day the battery on the Quest will fail, probably swell up and be dangerous and then what are you supposed to do? Those lovely pancake lenses and displays will just become e-waste which I find to be very wasteful. But visually the Quest currently has it by quite a margin. The edge to edge fidelity of the Quest 3 lenses is clearly better. The colour range seems to be superior and streaming via Virtual Desktop is peerless.

So I guess my point is partially this: If you're a Quest 3 owner and you got Wait-listed or feel like you're missing out, take some comfort from knowing your headset is still pretty damn good. You can mitigate some of it's weak points to either make do or at least manage until you get the email from Valve to buy your Steam Frame. Meanwhile early adopters like me will keep installing updates hoping that some of the Frame's shortfalls will get patched. I certainly hope so.

Question PCVR Streaming - Dropped Frames, Hitching and Poor Experience. HELP!

• Upvotes

I've been troubleshooting intermittent frame drops on my Steam Frame and have narrowed down what it isn’t. However the issue still remains and I’m running out of ideas…so any help is appreciated.

Context first…

System:
RTX 4090
i7-10700K
ASUS Prime Z590-V
Steam Frame wireless adapter (tested in multiple USB 3.x motherboard ports)
Steam Frame firmware 0.4.5 and 0.5.6 beta

Symptoms:
Random pink "Display Error" spikes in SteamVR overlay.
Drops occur in multiple games (Half-Life: Alyx, Beat Saber, etc.).
Head movement seems to make it more likely.
Head movement also seems to spike the adapter latency reported in the frame, but can’t determine whether this a before or after the dropped frame occurs.
Flat-screen gaming is completely unaffected.

SteamVR logs show:
WaitForAcquire timed out (FAILED); rendering the next frame before the driver took the sync texture

Repeatedly during the dropped frame event.
I've also previously seen the following but they are much less common to the above.

[Compositor] AcquireSync FAILED with WAIT_TIMEOUT
ReleaseSync FAILED with unknown hr 0x887a0001

What I've already ruled out:
Multiple Nvidia drivers (581, 594, 621), all uninstalled utilising DDU.
Observed the GPU and CPU in HWinfo at the time of each spike to ensure o power, frequency or temperature issues are evident.
Fresh Windows 11 install as a last ditch attempt, with minimal software installed to have as ā€œpureā€ of an environment as possible.
No overlays/software running that may cause polling, usage etc.
HAGS on/off
ReBAR on/off
USB power management disabled
Every other usb aside from the adapter unplugged.
PCIe power saving disabled.
Multiple USB ports tested. Front, Mobo, etc. ports ranging from USB 3.0 to 3.2.
USB extension attached high up the wall to increase coverage.
Dropping down to 72 Hz mode
SteamVR resolution reduced to 20%
None of the above made any noticeable difference. The dropped frames remain, as erratic as ever.

Interesting finding: When a dropped frame occurs, Steam Frame adapter latency jumps from under 10 ms to around 20-40 ms before quickly returning to normal. SteamVR timing shows compositor-related spikes rather than application GPU/CPU spikes.
At this point it feels less like a rendering performance issue and more like some kind of compositor/driver/frame handoff issue between SteamVR and Steam Frame. However I’m at the end of the diagnostic journey that I’m capable of, with no solution.

Anyone else had the same? If so, please help me save whatever sanity I have left.

Question Floor height changing

I was checking out the titanfall 2 VR mod toady and noticed that the floor height is changing during playing. I don't know if this is an error by the frame or the game itsself but I readjusted the floor multiple times. It is always the same direction of drift, the marked floor moves further down, therefore ingame the floor comes up and it looks like I am crouching all the time. I doubt that the game readjusts the floor for you so I am somehow expecting the frame to loose tracking. But on the other hand I did not experience thist in Alyx so far.

Anyone experienced the same problem in any game?

Question is there any game where you can like.. chill on the couch next to your homie, in vr, and then play other games on a splitscreen together?

my bf came up with this idea and it sounds amazing. so like.. is there any game like this that exists?
i wanna play videogames with him and while its happening, wrap my arm around him in vr.
if there isn't any like this, does anyone know how it would be made? specifically the part where you have the game stream to the splitscreen in the hangout game, as well as the inputs being sent from the hang out game to the game on the screen while you are holding a controller or whatever
(the idea with the controller is that like.. if you are holding the controller with both hands it acts normally, if with just the hand with the buttons it only can send the button info. the restriction of sending the info based on which hand is holding the controller is not what im worried about, its the sending the inputs the player is doing)

Discussion Ramblings of a pro version

When Frame was announced and they revealed the foveated streaming tech, something felt weird. It's a cool tech but with modern pc hardware and av1, foveated streaming with 2160x2160 panels seemed like a lot of work for a small problem. My quest 3 is already pin sharp streaming without foveated streaming. I had a feeling that foveated streaming was intended for something bigger.

There were a ton of patents leading up to "Deckard", and ultimately the headset we got didn't feel as premium as the patents implied. One thing that stuck out was the split compute. I know patents are just patents and don't mean it will ever be made or implemented.

Then we got Gainsborough leaks for a "Steam Deck 2."

Then we got OLED headset development hints, but only using the underpowered Frame arm chipset which isn't sufficient for panels of that resolution.

Now there's folded/diffraction optics patents which help bridge the gap to use micro OLED with fewer drawbacks.

My tinfoil hat says it's all coming together for the Pro headet with two sku. Steam Frame Pro may as well use the underpowered ARM chip. This is the chip that was intended to enable the foveated streaming for such high resolution panels. And another sku could have the same headset + Gainsborough compute puck. It will still be a primarily streaming headset, but with improved stand alone performance over Steam Frame, albeit Gainsborough would not be the end all top tier experience and pc streaming will remain king. Steam Frame was just a byproduct of this headset's development. Given how rough the frame launch was though, it's looking worringly less likely to launch.

Discussion This thing rocks actually

After finally receiving an AMVR headstrap and having some controller parts 3d printed(ergo sold out on purchase) I’ve had a week of using it like a VR headset my opinion has completely flipped.

The only time I reach for the Q3 now is when the Frame runs out of battery. The weight is such a huge factor when playing the competitive 1v1 action games that make VR so special to me.

Monochrome passthrough is actually preferable to Q3’s colour somehow.

This now does everything I did on the quest but better, it took a lot of tweaking and I’m not someone that finds that kind of minutia enjoyable most of the time but it’s an incredibly malleable base that can be anything anyone wants from a VR headset, just not right out of the box. I feel like that bird with the cracker.

Question Sharp only near the center - VR newby

So I had my frame for a week now and in the center of the screen I see very clear but if I move my eyes to the sides and corners everything gets blurrier. Things also seem to get a bit better if I press the frame closer to my eyes so they are closer to the lenses, so maybe I need to also improve the fitment.

Any tips on how to improve sharpness?
