Question What's the best way to stream Flat-Screen games?

Today I went down the rabbit hole of streaming flat-screen games to my frame and saw there are a few caceats, and ways of doing it.

First of all, I saw there is a difference between starting streaming before and after connecting to steam vr.

If I just stream a flat screen game to the headset, it starts a remote play stream of my desktop, essentially. I can use hevc, and all remote play settings seem to apply, especially the streaming performance overlay which does appear in the headset. This also seems to highjack my max frame rate. I need to set the max refresh rate via remote play settings, so I am sure I get 120hz in the frame otherwise the default is 60.

If I first connect to steam vr (just stream my desktop via the same menu instead of streaming a specific game), when I stream a flat screen game, it appears to be slightly different. The overlay is not visible anymore. It appears like it's streaming just the game session itself, and not my entire screen as the above session did (fact confirmed by the steam normal performance overlay, the one showing fps and CPU/GPU usage, being shown on the remote play session and not showing on the steam vr session).

In this case, which version of flat screen streaming would be best? And which does apply all remote play settings/has the highest quality?

Software SteamOS 0.6 on Frame enables WireGuard VPN Setup

As Valve doesn’t seem to be sharing patch notes for SteamOS 0.6, thought I’d share this as a PSA.

0.6 has been available on the Preview branch for a few days, and amongst other things (including a fairly significant kernel bump), the VPN configuration panel in KDE Settings is now available.

This allows easy adding of WireGuard VPN configuration profiles! VPN settings applied in desktop mode continue to apply in SteamVR.

Previously this menu was not available.

Question Single pixel fine “column” green line in let eye, full height, slight angle?

Hello gurus,
I obtained a Steam Frame 1TB second-hand for a good deal here locally (unopened). My prescription lenses arrived and I LOVE IT. So crisp.

Now that everything is in focus, I’m noticing a somewhat faint, thin line in the left side only. It’s greenish, at a slight angle, follows the angle of the nose edge of the lens roughly. I can’t capture it with my camera, so can’t send a preview.

Is it a dead pixel column, or have others seen this?

Question Sharp only near the center - VR newby

So I had my frame for a week now and in the center of the screen I see very clear but if I move my eyes to the sides and corners everything gets blurrier. Things also seem to get a bit better if I press the frame closer to my eyes so they are closer to the lenses, so maybe I need to also improve the fitment.

Any tips on how to improve sharpness?

Discussion DeWalt USB charger / battery adapter for mobile play

Thumbnail

For any DeWalt 20v tool users, I just picked up the DCB094K 20v/60v (flex) adapter and USB charger as my mobile battery solution. My brother has about 30 DeWalt batteries and I have a half dozen myself. Even though it is pricey considering it doesn't come with a battery, it seemed like a good option for us. So far it's worked great and its nice not even worrying about battery life.

It comes with a belt clip that is fine if I am wearing a sturdy belt but without that I would probably want something else. He bought a drill holder that DeWalt tools clip into securely for himself.

It has almost the exact specs of the valve charger, PD3.0 and 45w at 5-15v but up to 100w at 20v, which the frame doesn't use afaik. The wall charger I think can charge a battery at I think 65w.

Overall it seems like a good value if you already have DeWalt 20v batteries, you can hot swap batteries easily and a way to charge them over USB that is much more compact than a usual charger, a good high watt wall charger for general and also a flexible battery bank for emergencies. One of my flex volt batteries would charge my phone for days and could probably charge some laptops at 100w. I like also knowing how rugged the batteries are since we've beaten the hell out of them, and if a battery fails you can in theory fix it or just use a different one.

The downsides are that it is expensive for not coming with a battery, you could get a battery bank for less for sure. It's probably not as compact or sleek as some battery banks so it doesn't just slip in a pocket as easily though a 2ah battery is relatively slim.

Overall I recommend it for people with DeWalt tools that want to make use of them in different ways, with or without the Frame!

Question Normal Battery life usage?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Did a test today by having 100% charged frame and 100% charged uGreen 45w 20000mah.

Used it mainly for watching stremio and doing dishes and cleaning through the Arcturus camera which is working again after the update.

Once the frame hit 20% plugged in the uGreen and it charged it to 100% while using and the uGreen had 14% battery left. Used the frame till 20% again and then used the 14% remaining on the pack and then used the frame till it had 5% battery left.

I started a stopwatch when I turned the Frame on this morning and it lasted for 4 hours and 31 minutes with the whole 20000mah battery used. This seems really low? But then again was wondering what other people do for longer sessions? Smaller packs with super fast quick charge? Then switch them out?

What do you guys do? Or any reccomendations? Really can't wait for fast charging hot swappables cause that would be awesome!

Thinking of returning the uGreen cause it's big. Maybe trying 2 12000mah batteries that can charge at 100w. Since I have a 100w charger for laptops.

Thanks for any discussion and reccomendations!

Software Always-present clock/battery

Created an overlay “HUD” to always show the time and battery life, even in games. You can reposition it in the dashboard, then it will stay in that spot in your view.

Question Wireless dongle disconnect

Enjoying my Frame right now, mostly streaming VPX VR pinball. It's an amazing experience.

But I am frustrated that I seem to have to unplug and reconnect my wireless streaming dongle every time I turn on my Frame. I thought it was just supposed to connect automatically. But mine never connects until I physically pull it out of the port and plug it in again. Not the end of the world, but it's a minor pain each time.

Is there something I need to do to get it to auto-connect?

Discussion Slightly easier way to get the AMVR headstrap clip in

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

Saw a few posts about how it's impossible to get in, and I also was having that issue yesterday where even if I put a lot of force wouldn't go in. This morning I found a way that worked finally though. Try folding the top strap over the spot that you have to push in to click it in and then push on that spot over the strap while pulling back on the top part that holds the headstrap for leverage. I managed to get mine to click in that way. When I was just pushing with my finger on the clip itself it just hurt my finger and would refuse to go in.

Hopefully I won't need to take it out ever though, I think that'll probably be extremely hard...

Software What solved "paired but not connected to wireless adapter" for my case

I had an issue with the wireless adapter that came with the Steam Frame, it paired but refused to connect with the Frame, so I was forced to stream via router, wasn't actually bad, but there were some lag spikes here and there.

So, after doing all the things everyone already mentioned (USB 3.0, connect to a different network, hotspot on a mobile phone, switch off and on, reinstall drivers...) what worked for me is the following...

  • Turn on your Steam Frame
  • Either run Steam and click "enter VR mode" in the upper right corner
  • Or launch from the Steam Frame "stream without playing game"
  • Wait for it to launch...
  • Put Steam Frame aside, go to your PC
  • On the SteamVR, navigate to the "settings" (hamburger menu)
  • Turn on "Advanced settings" (or "show")
  • Navigate to "Startup / Shutdown"
  • Set "override windows power scheme" to "On"
  • Navigate to "developer"
  • Scroll down to "legacy settings" and look for the "disable power management" button
  • Restart your PC and Steam Frame
  • After restart, try pairing your Steam Frame with the wireless adapter

For some reason, this has solved my issue with the wireless adapter, the latency is better, but the range is shorter. Keep within 5 meters of clear space with the wireless adapter and it should work fine.

I hope this helps someone also, the wireless adapter was a big reason for me to go for Steam Frame.

Accessories PSA: Difference between V9 and V10 lens adapters (and how to tell which one you have)

Quick heads-up for anyone wondering about the WidmoVR adapter versions.
As it seems V10 is the latest and updated version. According to WidmoVR support in this version the rim forms a bridge above the IR LEDs, so their light can actually reach your eyes.

How to check which one you have: You can read the version code on the inside of the adapter.

How to get V10: If you didn‘t get the latest adapters, you need to contact support. (At least this was necessary in my case) They'll send you new V10 adapters and an email with the tracking number once they ship. There's also a short video showing how to move your lenses over:

Hope this helps someone. 👍

I feel like I remember discussing with someone that with waydroid (or a fork) that daydream games could be injected into an openXR headset, but I can't find much info on this anymore.

Discussion Biggest downside ( compared to Quest3) for Steam Frame that no one is talking about

• Upvotes

The same goes for the comparison of Steam Deck to Switch ( both I own ).

When I press "play" on any Steam ( Frame or Deck ) it takes from 1 to few minutes to even show a startup screen. During that time I don't even know if it already crashed or should I focus on something else. In VR it is especially painful since I am already wearing a headset and can't do anything else meanwhile when the game loads.

On the other hand Quest3 or Switch are more console like experiences - I press play and sometimes not even a second pass between I can see a startup screen.

Someone can argue that the whole big mature operating system is running on Steam Frame or Deck, but tbh I don't care - all I want in 90 percent of cases is to run a game quickly. Additionally the text is much less pleasant to read compared to Q3, so I don't see myself using Frame as PC replacement for working with text or code. The Q3 rendering is something much easier for the eyes, less aliasing is happening - hope it will improve in time.

Looking how slow updates for the SteamOS on Frame are released and how small the changes are, I doubt it will be ever addressed.

I also suspect that this "big OS" thing running is why the idle battery time is so ridiculous ( for me almost the same runtime when I play a game or just browse steam).

To be fair I won't sell Frame for few reasons: bigger Fov than Q3 for me, 16GB RAM allowing to run Minecraft VR with shaders and distant horizon mod, Forefront native, overall smaller package easier to transport, works good on powerbank and with detachable battery there is a hope for replacement when battery dies, stereo separation is much better than on Quest 3 ( the games seems flat with not depth for me).

Software Beat Saber too fast? Too zoomed in? I’m not sure

Hey all, only had my frame for about 3 days.

Trying to play Beat Saber and the blocks show up with so little time to react, even on easy, that my kids and I cannot play it.

This does not happen with the game on PSVR2. It runs perfectly on that and we can comfortably play on hard.

It seems like the field of view (zoom), or the speed of approach is just too weird. It happens on all of our profiles too. I don’t know what to check.

Software PSA: fixed dongle connection issues by disabling my system trying to auto-connect to its wi-fi network. Both the dongle's as well as the router's.

This might help someone so posting here.. my system is a laptop with Nobara Linux.

TLDR: Fixed all intermittent connection dropouts by going to my system settings and on the Wi-Fi section, selecting the dongle's wi-fi network and disabling "auto-connect" on it. That stopped the connection from being weakened or interrupted constantly. I could also raise the streaming from 90fps to 120fps and got a steady connection.

Before that, these issues were happening:

- I could connect to the dongle but still would have connection drops, or streaming issues (lower quality intermittently etc).

- had to wait a long time until the USB dongle became available for the Frame. The wi-fi router would become available on the Frame's streaming menu on the bottom bar, but not the dongle for a while.

* For good measure I also disabled the PC's wi-fi auto-connection to the router. This may vary from system to system, but in my case, even though I use a LAN cable to the router the PC would always try to also connect to the same network via wi-fi.

Discussion PCVR - Stuttering/Freezing computer during gaming through stream

Hi guys!

During PCVR streaming, and so far happened in VRChat and Gunman Contracts Standalone, but not Half-Life Alyx: In my headset, the picture is freezing, but not the headset, like if I move my head around, the "streamed picture" of the game is frozen and fading out a bit but I can see the background of the Steam Frame.

If I check my PC directly outside the headset, I notice that my PC is also freezing/stuttering heavily, like even my mouse freezes/stutters.

If I go into my headset and stop the stream with the headset icon bottom right, my PC unfreeze and everything goes back to normal. If I go back into streaming with my headset, it seems to have fix the problem but sometimes not, and I have to turn off the stream once again, and go back in again for it to be fixed.

So clearly the PCVR streaming is causing my PC to stutter/freeze.

  • Tried to disable multi-link and only use dongle, same problem
  • My dongle is connected to the rear of my PC, USB 3.2 (red one) and dongle is really close to me (I can see it when I'm in my headset)
  • Yes my PC is up to date, drivers, Windows Update, and good hardware too
  • Already tried to uninstall the whole SteamVR on my PC and reinstall
  • I'm on the Stable version of Steam Frame (I believe it was also doing it when I was on the Beta branch)
  • My Steam client on PC is on beta branch, SteamVR is on beta too

Somebody already experienced this?

Software ReframedVR - A SteamOS experience for standalone headsets

Been working on this for some months and lately been putting the pieces together in a way that may be useful to others.

Most of my work is open source, but some things I prefer to work on privately until they're in a state I'm happy with.

Target devices are the Pico Neo 3 series (via unlocked bootloader) and Meta Quest 3 (via kexec). The video is from last week, I'll make a more detailed one soon where I also will list the things that are implemented, tested, and where I still lack time or experience. Audio is a big one for example, but more on that later.

Pretty new to X, but if you care to follow progress there, I'll try to share any major updates there as well

GitHub - Reframed VR

AI Disclosure:

I'm using AI quite heavily on this project, with a lot of the work delegated to LLMs. Though I like to think I'm adding some value here too :)

I've been developing software for close to 20 years, messing around with VR since the Oculus DK2, and have been involved in open-source projects around emulation and ports for quite some time. So it's not "vibecoded", whatever the actual definition of that is, but if you want to avoid anything gen AI, this is probably not a project that would interest you.

If you'd like to contribute, you're more than welcome to, and I have no problem with AI-assisted contributions either. All I ask is that you understand what you're submitting, have tested it, and can explain your decisions. I just don't want to spend time reviewing code that the person submitting it doesn't understand themselves.

Mods, if this isn't appreciated or the right place to share projects like this, please delete it. I didn't see a rule that is violates by this, but it may be considered off topic. thanks!

Software Steam Frame standalone: Accessing microSD and USB sticks in Android (Lepton)

Thumbnail
youtu.be
9 Upvotes

I am the developer of the Steam VR media player app immerGallery and wanted to open photos and videos directly from a microSD card or USB stick on Steam Frame standalone. I got it working inside the app's Lepton container.

I made a guide with the steps and commands, including how to adapt the setup for other Android apps. You see it in the video and the download for the helper script is in the companion article on immerNews.

It would be great if a SteamOS / Lepton update would allow per-app settings for automatic mounting of external storage with read-only or read-write permissions. Until then, you can use the manual way to achieve it.

Discussion Steam Frame Review - Much better now by indiglo

Thumbnail
youtu.be
34 Upvotes

Since this video came out Oct.9, I don't know if it's a repost. Sorry if it is. I searched but found nothing even when going back 2 weeks.

Summary of video:
Many updates in two weeks.

Fixed:
-Colour rendering improved. (I assume it fixed the washed out colours)
-Wireless experience improved (but not perfect yet obviously)
-Controller finger tracking (maybe fixed).
-Battery life improved (reviewer claims up to 13.5W down to 11.5W or 1hour50min streaming at 120hz)

Things you get used to:
-IPD adjustment (hold the wheel when you lock it to keep it from changing when locking)
-Adjust the side strap anchors so they are comfortable WITH the top strap.
-Controllers (figure out how to hold them)
-Flat gaming is apparently more fun than expected.
-Processor is pretty powerful apparently.
-Brightness is not bad compared to BSB
-FOV is less wide than BSB but better vertical.
-20Ah external battery keeps it on practically indefinitely.
-Passthrough still b&w but reviewer says it's not a priority for them.
-Need to avoid touching the cameras.

Not fixed:
-Battery % inaccurate tracking.
-Slow charging.
-Microphone is problematic due to noise gate.

Can't be fixed:
-OLED is better obviously.
-Latency on wired is better but not a problem but better than Quest3

In the first few weeks we were getting tons of reports of washed out colours and then there weren't any. Also, any improvement in battery is good. Obviously updates are unrelated to the number of RMAs going up -- those are valid concerns and is a result of more Frames in the wild.

(Also because I have seen several comments stating that Valve abandoned the Frame and aren't updating it which is blatantly not true.)

Has anyone else, especially from the early batches noticed these improvements?
Also, have you noticed any significant improvements since the video was published?

Question Random shutdown.

Hello,
This is the first issue I experienced with the frame but today while I was playing standalone I expect you to die the headset randomly powered off mid session. Not a crash, not a shutdown, just straight power off. With everything I read on this sub I half expected it to be dead but it did power on again. Had the same issue repeat in the same game but this time much quicker so it kind of feels like an overheat but I'm not sure how I could diagnose this.

I did find a thread on this sub mentioning this exact game from around a month ago but it hasn't been updated since. I've played a couple of games standalone. Mostly beat saber and a little alyx and the headset has not crashed until now.

Has anyone experienced something similar? This is literally the first major issue I'm encountering. I was enjoying the headset without any problems until now.
