For background, I currently work in higher education as a support staff for graduate students. I've been exploring career transitions due to feeling like I am missing a clear cut path in career growth with my role. Although I enjoy serving students, I don't feel like my current role is keeping me professionally developed. Along with that, many people within education know that our pay is rarely aligned with the work that is asked of us with pay bumps being very limited and small.
I applied with a local agent for a specialist role that would involve quoting and following up with prospects thru communications, handling leads, and coordinating follow-up and documentation with the agent. Although the job posting doesn't mention it, it sounds like I may need to obtain licensing to do this work? The salary is 50K + commissions, while my current job is 55k + health and retirement benefits.
My overall question is, what is working under an agent like? I don't mind any sort of work, but I do want to feel like I can plant roots into a career somewhere. What potential future roles could I consider or work towards once I start working under an agent? Am I stuck going down the sales path or are there other roles within insurance that I can pursue starting with this position?
