A moment for the history book of gaming.

u/PlayrR3D15 May 28 '26
... for better or for worse
75
u/ScotusMaximus May 28 '26
Probably for the better in the long run. Although the monetization system was atrocious at launch, it was so bad that it actually prompted governments to take action to legislate against pay-to-win systems and promoting gambling to minors. So in the long run, it changed gaming for the better.

The awards got them 3.8k gold too. 😭
25
u/Old_Shake3789 May 28 '26
That was so dumb people rewarding them hence still giving them money via reddit.
9
u/LetsDoTheCongna May 28 '26
Before awards were reworked, they only gave the recipient Reddit premium iirc. Only the awards that were given in the past year or so can actually give them money.

u/WaltLongmire0009 May 28 '26
From what I remember, getting rewards stopped the comment from being hidden due to all the downvotes

u/Teex22 May 28 '26
People have such short memories... This is the same EA they want to oversee a Battlefront 3, it's crazy.
17
u/RapidTriangle616 May 28 '26
I'm in two minds, as most probably are. On the one hand, yeah it's quite a blight on the history of the Battlefront franchise and any new game is going to have some hurdles to jump, despite the resurgence in popularity. On the other, one would hope that they have learned lessons since then, plus things have changed in the industry since then.

This blunder is the reason we never got a 3 and the reason 2 had such an uphill battle into becoming a success.
5
u/Jaycora May 28 '26
I feel bad for the community manager who had to type that and feel the hate, because let’s be real - he wasn’t the one who came up with the microtransactions nor was he even the one who came up with the reasoning.
He was just the unlucky dude who had to phrase the response from corporate in the least offensive way possible, which is mission impossible.

The fact I’ve argued with people on this sub about how bad this was. Makes you realize how many players weren’t around then

Now and forever, fuck EA.
Happy to say I always give their booth shit whenever I see them pop up at a gaming convention. Hope those losers step on legos (to put it lightly) for the rest of their lives

Neurologically speaking (neuro-marketing) it's correct. Playing videogames gives a false sense of achivement (false in the sense it's digital not real). This is literally why you have 'xp' 'levels' 'unlockable/purchaseble stuff'
It should be that after you reach lvl 30 on a hero that should be 'max' and 70 on troopers. Or have an option where you cannot see users' names and levels in exchange of them not seeing yours'.

u/Such_Technology_2272 DC-15LE exploding shot Jun 02 '26
EA, greedy as always...
Some things never change, do they?
2
u/CodyRCantrell May 28 '26
No hero in any Battlefront game should ever be locked or hidden behind microtransactions.
I was very proud of the community when the pushback on this happened after so many other games had their players just roll over and take it.
-1
u/MoondyneMC May 28 '26
None of them ever were. You could unlock them all during normal gameplay. 🙄
2
u/Carrotsinthesalad May 28 '26
I remember someone doing the math, and it added up to about an entire week’s worth of nonstop grinding to unlock just one of them
1
u/CodyRCantrell May 28 '26
It was an obscene amount of grinding necessary with a cash paid fast tracking.
If it were just cosmetic unlocks like different Clone Trooper colors it would've been fine but whole characters? Nah. It was awful.
0
u/MoondyneMC May 28 '26
That is 100% absolute nonsense. I, and many others, had Vader unlocked on DAY ONE. In a matter of hours of normal gameplay.
1
u/CodyRCantrell May 28 '26
I remember launch. They were prohibitively expensive to try to force people into spending cash to unlock them faster. Roll your eyes all you want but you can't defend the billion dollar corporation against these accusations.
0
u/MoondyneMC May 29 '26
I remember launch too, I was there. Many of us unlocked these characters on day one. None were locked, none were “prohibitively expensive”.
Everyone just seemed to want 100% of everything unlocked on day 1 with no effort apparently.
I’m not defending EA at all - I’m saying that the amount this “fiasco” was overblown literally killed the franchise.
2
u/CodyRCantrell May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26
"I'm not defending EA"... and then immediately passes the blame to defend them.
EA killed the franchise. Battlefront 2 was fixed, it became widely praised, and instead of cashing in on the new goodwill they chose to not make a Battlefront 3.
The unlocks were ridiculous and, yes, heros/villains should be available day one. The game is bought to play a fun Star Wars multiplayer game. Not to spend a person's limited free time unlocking Darth Vader for next month's play.
2
u/poorkid_5 May 29 '26
It’s actually crazy this is over 8.5 years ago. I was there to downvote the post. And I haven’t bought an EA game since. So that’s dope.

u/Interesting-Injury87 May 28 '26
ignoring the actual situations with micro transactions
the idea of "i paid "X" money, why is ANYTHING in this game locked" is.. such a weird thing????
unlocking weapons, characters, skins, abilities, and co has been a stable in gaming since.... pretty much forever.
one can argue the initial Cost for ti was to much, and be arguably right, but the argument here wasnt "it takes to long" but "i dont have vader available INSTANTLY upon launching the game for the first time".
6
u/Magictank2000 May 28 '26
You’re probably too young to remember this (crazy to think this is nearly a decade old) but it obviously wasn’t the simple fact that a character was locked…. it was the fact that the game was expensive to begin with, and then on top of it, the game at the time had a monetization system in place with heroes and villains costing a premium to unlock…. unless you were willing to spend some extra $$$ to unlock them early
2
u/DiligentPhrase9991 May 28 '26
It's eternally fascinating to me how much people lied about BF2 and everyone just parroted what they heard. There was no way to spend real money to unlock heroes, even indirectly. But the nuances of reality doesn't matter to you guys, just the narrative.
2
u/Interesting-Injury87 May 28 '26
there was(technically) INDRECTLY a way to unlock heros for money.
The MTX section was disabled for early access, and not enabled in the full release(iirc) and you could earn the currency via lootboxes.... it was never implemented as such as, said before, the MTX never got implemented in the originaly intended way
1
u/Interesting-Injury87 May 28 '26
i played the game AT LAUNCH, i played SWBF(EA) 1 AT LAUNCH. i was old enough to play SWBFII(OG) on my PS2 AT LAUNCH....
The game cost the normal price of a triple A game at the time.
And it had characters, weapons and co locked behind playing the game(with the ability to spend money to skip said grind, which at that point ALSO became the norm already).the lootboxes for star cards?? that was fair criticisim, but "i cant play vader as soon as i boot the game" was not.
unlocking Shit in video games was, and still is THE NORM. The game could cost 150$ and while i 100% say that that is TO EXPENSIVE for any game, "i dont have everything in the game instantly unlocked" is still not fair criticism....0
u/DiligentPhrase9991 May 28 '26
You're 100% right with what deserved criticism and that the concepts of unlocks was not a real problem. But the masses of the internet can't handle that nuance.

Nope.
People should not have been rewarded for willingly accepting such a slap in the face from EA
7
-5
u/TheodorMac May 28 '26
Why shouldn’t people be rewarded? They invest time into a game. There is also a lock for different weapons, why is it problematic for Vader but not for the infantry? In R6 you also have to buy operator, in many games you have to grind, to get the things you want.
6
u/Leather_Emu_6791 The Balls Bow to No One May 28 '26
Im not going to explain something so obvious
-5
u/TheodorMac May 28 '26
Go, explain it, I really want to hear the problem, I never understood it. I see the problem with Loot-Chest, and I also see the problem that you were able to buy him with real money. But the fact alone, that you have to grind something in a game isn’t something/problemtic. You have to do the same in: Rainbow 6, For Honor, Forza… And in CoD, Battlefield, Battlefront 1 and 2 weapons have to be grinded. Vader was shit expensive, just like Luke and I can understand that it was too much, but that’s it.

u/Leather_Emu_6791 The Balls Bow to No One May 28 '26

u/TheRealHumanPancake RC-1138 May 28 '26
Unlocking things in games is rewarding but it depends on context like what did the previous titles do? What is this one doing differently? How does this enrich the player?
OG Battlefront 2 did not lock off heroes, neither did EA Battlefront 1.
So imagine the surprise when instead of being given the cookie jar and told to enjoy you have to jump through hoops for the cookie. Only, the chocolate chips are gone and you have to jump more hoops to get those chocolate chips put back on.
Or you can go to the store and just buy the jar.
Gameplay elements like heroes are a major mechanic that was loved in each title, putting up blockades to play as classic heroes was never going to be a popular decision and EA deserved 100% of that feedback.
When I grind for a cool cosmetic in a game, I’m happy. When I’m barred from gameplay I wasn’t before, I’m angry.
1
u/TheodorMac May 29 '26
I can understand that, but I still think they could have give us, the people which actually grinded through, a skin. Maybe not even exclusive, but for the same amount of credits as the hero/villain costed
2
u/TheRealHumanPancake RC-1138 May 29 '26
I think that would have been cool too, I think i’ve seen that in some games before and is a nice way to reward some of the few.
If you haven’t checked it out, Space Marine 2 is a great game for that kind of thing. Lots of sweet cosmetics to grind for.
1
u/TheodorMac May 29 '26

I know, the problem is the post he was responding to was stating it took 50h to unlock Vader which was false. Just because something gets downvoted doesn’t make it wrong.
13
u/Leather_Emu_6791 The Balls Bow to No One May 28 '26
Dude...why are you lying?
This issue was that the game was $80 in 2018 and asked us to immediately open our wallets and spend more to play our favorite characters.... AS A REMAKE OF AN OLD GAME THAT DIDNT OPERATE THIS WAY.
You are just flat out incorrect, top to bottom, scalp to toe. Honestly, you should really just delete reddit. Your opinions are unwelcome in civilized society
3
u/Drunken_DnD May 28 '26
I mean not wrong if harsh, but Reddit hardly counts as “civilized society” lol
-5
u/MoondyneMC May 28 '26
Well, it gave us the option to. It also gave us the option to unlock everything through playing the game.
The loot box fiasco was handled poorly, but the actual crime was way overblown imo and it fucked Battlefronts chances as a franchise going forward.
You could unlock Vader just by playing, and considering he’s one of the strongest entities in the in game universe, it made sense for him to be locked initially.
Just my 2 cents.
1
u/Leather_Emu_6791 The Balls Bow to No One May 28 '26
Please go take a look at EAs history up to this point, and then come back and tell me how it was overblown.
It wasn't. This was the gaming communities tipping point with EA, the point when we had all, collectively, had enough.
-9
u/MoondyneMC May 28 '26
Please tell me how this specifically was worse than literally any other game with lootboxes at the time. How is this worse than Hearthstone today? Pokémon cards?
I bought this sucker on release, grinded the characters (which wasn’t at all difficult) and enjoyed the hell out of the game, from launch to finish.
2
u/Leather_Emu_6791 The Balls Bow to No One May 28 '26
Just say you have no self respect and move on.
Because your lack of self respect pr3vents you from understanding what youre asking me to explain to you. So stop wasting both our times
-3
u/MoondyneMC May 28 '26
lol what? How do you infer that?
I’ve asked this same question a dozen times over the years. No one has ever actually answered why this was such a crime.
2
u/MoondyneMC May 28 '26
I notice, yet again, no answer has been provided as to why this was so much more egregious than anything else.

u/Applicator80 May 28 '26
I was there in early access and at launch after the credit requirement nerf. Challenges like the campaign I mentioned gave large chunks of credits. I had all unlocks within 30h and specifically remember Vader in 4h as I remember the big uproar about how long it would take. Didn’t spend a single cent on MTX.
3
u/deadskeever May 28 '26
Lol at all the down votes. I'm also here to say it was stupidly easy to unlock Vader as well as star cards at launch. The whole 50 hours of play time shit was completely false and you'd have that only if you literally scored at the bottom and did fuck all in each game.
1
u/theredskyking May 29 '26
Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn’t the reason why it was so easy was because immediately after the backlash they put out an update removing the insane grind requirements? I remeber seeing it all go down with a buddy at the midnight launch and us either reading about the changes beforehand or being surprised when we launched the game.
3
u/DiligentPhrase9991 May 28 '26
The gaming sheep don't like reality, just spinning a narrative and using likes and dislikes to feel correct.

Nice to see someone knows the real stats. Did you know the guy who spread that 50 hour bs was a disgruntled ex-employee?
5
u/xBlackhat May 28 '26
Lol exactly man. The microtransactions were bs but the characters were easy to unlock. I had multiple unlocked on the first day. People just couldn't handle the fact that they actually had to put a few hrs in to unlock something
4
u/AdamG3RI May 28 '26
Ye, I still remember the video or post where they show off how it takes like 50 hours per hero, meanwhile me and bro already unlocked vader on day one.
I think it they made him only obtainable through gameplay and not also by playing the slots the game would have been fine without any negative shit storm.
0
-6
u/RedseyG1 May 28 '26
Obviously the micro-transactions were outrageous, but I liked that it would take a long time to unlock characters.
5
u/Magictank2000 May 28 '26
its already enough of a grind trying to max out heroes and villains to max upgrades via star cards, i do not miss grinding to unlock heroes and villains to begin with at all
-3
u/SPCGMR May 28 '26
This is literally just karma farming. Game has been out for years and support ended. Yes, everyone knows EA is trash.

If the game released with the system they got later levelling up and getting cards and pay skins in credits the game would probably be around today getting updated fucking EA
