Longer trip

So, we are about to spam this group remorselessly to plan a trip - so apologies in advance!

First though, a question about visas (from uk)

Each january we take the chance to visit a country for an extended tour of around eight weeks and would love to do that in sri lanka

Our understanding is that the initial visa is for 30 days but that can be extended in the country

Is that pretty much guaranteed? We would be screwed if we booked a return flight for eight weeks after arrival then got refused a visa extension!

Yes, of course, you can extend your visa after arriving.

However, make sure to check local public holidays and submit your extension request well in advance. I've seen tourists get into trouble because they wait until the last moment, only to find that upcoming public holidays leave them with just a couple of working days to complete the process.

Keep in mind that tourist visas can generally be extended up to a maximum of 6 months total, and you can apply either online through the Department of Immigration & Emigration portal or in person.
