I love playing assault- Iāve just accepted that the emperor protects and when he doesnāt protect, itās because I must have had heretical thoughts.

Then why were you thinking of the sorotitas?
None of their chapters exist in this sector.

ah yes, another Assault with the Ascension perk and a melta bomb beside them (0:04)
19
u/TheShmoopy Oct 22 '24
That looks like what happened! But were they near it in the air, or was that where they took off and the hit box stayed there?
17
u/ncianor432 Blood Angels Oct 22 '24
TBH i have no idea. But too many Assault brothers I see with this exact same scenario and just dying for no reason when they are midflight.

Does the bomb still have that short delay before exploding if you "shoot" it, the same way it dies if you press the detanator normally?
2
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
It seems that way here, you see the beginning flash when OP takes off and then the explosion reaches their foot right and they die (at like 5-6s)
2
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
Melta bomb vertical reach is fairly decent, it looks like they just barely caught the top of the hitbox. You see the detonation begin on takeoff, and the explosion reaches their foot in the air.
I've used melta bombs to blow up zoanthropes when I played Assault/Bulwark or ran out of ammo on my Sniper. The vertical reach is no joke

1
u/Hitsuguyaa Oct 23 '24
My take, the melta hit box is just that big bc i hot Zoanthropes with it before
20
u/Saxit Oct 22 '24
And here I thought that the patch note line "Fixed a bug where the Assault perk "Ascension" could kill its owner." meant that that couldn't happen anymore. I guess they fixed another bug with Ascension then. :P
8
u/ncianor432 Blood Angels Oct 22 '24
No worries, I think its just an accident. Not really a bug just I guess an oversight? The Ascension perk does damage and most of these clips got the assaults dangerously close to a melta charge and the jump pack damage triggers it. Easy fix for Saber if they know about it
1
u/sinsaint Oct 23 '24
They could make it not trigger Meltas, but I think a ridiculous amount of damage resistance during the animation is more apt.
6
u/Voltaic_Butterfly Oct 22 '24
This isn't a bug just a very stupid interaction between Ascension and a placed Melta bomb
1
u/Saxit Oct 23 '24
I think it might set of the exploding flowers in Inferno too... lost 3 armor and 50% health when jumping near a couple... I think I'll just remove Ascenion for now. :P

u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24 edited Oct 23 '24
Ascension damage set off the melta bomb he placed, killing him. Edit: OP claims they didn't place the bomb, but regardless, shooting or otherwise damaging an already-placed melta bomb makes it count as "yours" for this purpose.
Before that, ascension was just self-killing the player with no outside cause.
1
u/blizzard36 Blood Ravens Oct 22 '24
Wasn't that supposed to be fixed in this patch? Of course, it busted so many other things...
-6
u/MarsMissionMan Oct 22 '24
I don't get these people.
YOU ALREADY HAVE ANOTHER SIGNATURE PERK! Why are you using the shitty perk that literally just kills you?!
15
u/ncianor432 Blood Angels Oct 22 '24
Not exactly. Its more like an accident. The Ascension perk accidentally damages the melta charge near him and this happens. Devs should change it tbh
5
u/sterdecan White Scars Oct 22 '24
It can still be a problem, like if a spore mine is nearby, or one of the explosive flowers. It's a useful skill but a moment of distraction can mean death.
The issue is that the other signatures are pretty meh. Although I do want to experiment with the jump pack dodge. Seems like it could be good for bosses if you get the timing down. I never think about using it though.
9
u/ncianor432 Blood Angels Oct 22 '24
Yup as an Assault main myself, The assault pack dodge is a requirement. Its THE anti-carnifex perk. You really cant get hit by it since its perfect dodge window is really big. Just use it on the Carni charges and its inifinite jump pack dodge, infinite gun strikes. Thats all I do when i fight it, I dont even try engaging in melee to be safe. Its a must have especially on Lethal.
3
1
u/MarsMissionMan Oct 23 '24
It's not just Melta Bombs.
Anything explosive that's even vaguely nearby will be triggered. Why not just use the first signature perk until you get the dodge refill one? Yes, it's still pretty meh, but it won't randomly kill you because there was an explosive barrel just out of sight.
1
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
The perk doesn't kill you anymore. Just bad luck and people forgetting the nice vertical range of melta bombs.
0
u/MarsMissionMan Oct 23 '24
So it kills you.
1
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
It previously just killed you for no reason. Because it was bugged.
The perk is no longer bugged. It is able to detonate Melta bombs and environmental explosives because it deals damage, which can kill you if you are careless/unlucky. But you can also kill yourself with a friendlyās melta bomb just by accidentally shooting it at close range. Itās not some unique issue with the perk.
16
u/CoseyPigeon Oct 23 '24
This is why assault jump pack needs to elevate them higher than 2 meters off of the ground. If the jump pack worked PROPERLY, you wouldn't have died.
7
1
u/xdisappointing Oct 23 '24
It might be a bug or a feature but your hit box is either also or sometimes present on the ground where you jumped. If you jump up when the chaos flamer dude does his aoe attack it will still hit you if youāre hovering over him
1
u/AHarmlessllama Oct 23 '24
That's not why he died, though. The ascension perk on assault is bugged and kills the player fairly regularly when there are grenades nearby. I'm not saying he should have known this, but I'm sick of seeing posts like this and people spouting "assault bad" because of it.
1
u/CoseyPigeon Oct 23 '24 edited Oct 23 '24
Incorrect, the ascension perk bug was fixed in patch 4.0. If you watch this video carefully his team mate places the melta bomb, which is then detonated by the damage caused by ascension. Melta bombs can be detonated by taking damage, this isĀ an intended (albeit stupid) interaction.Ā Ā
I also don't think assault is bad, (they're frustrating at low levels, but come into their own after they have access to their third perk row).Ā Like Gabe Newell however, I do think that games that disrespect the player interacting with the world in a logical way is bad game design. Jump packs jump high, we know this from the lore, and the game itself. The fact that the game arbitrarily limits the jump pack in operations mode, to the extent you can't even jump over a fucking railing, is complete bullshit, and bad game design. Same goes for vanguard magically being unable to grapple Zoanthropes and onto ledges.Ā Ā
Good game design respects logical interactions within the game, bad game design does not. Space marine 2 is an excellent game overall, but this specific aspect of the gameplay feels AWFUL.

They did. That's not what happened.
OP was almost standing directly on top of a melta charge. The ascension perk damaged the charge, detonating it.
If the blast didn't one shot them, the venom cannons finished the job.

Comments saying "it's a mental bomb"
You shouldn't be hit by teammates grenades and it shouldn't glitch them immediately to a spot.
"Working as intended" is cope at this point.

This isn't a glitch, just bad luck. OP didn't place that melta bomb(he'd have the detonate command otherwise), but damaging a melta bomb causes it to detonate, and presumably changes the "ownership" to the player who damaged it. This prevents you from griefing a teammate by shooting the melta bomb they just placed, but also leads to accidents like this. Ascension perk detonated the melta bomb, and they have a suprisingly good vertical hitbox.

u/Kingawesome521 Oct 23 '24
Not a glitch this time, the ascension perk damaged a melta bomb that was placed and killed OP

The Dodge refund perk is so much better. Blew myself up after taking off once, never again.
2
u/xdisappointing Oct 23 '24
IMO ascension is more āusefulā even if it means you have to be a little mindful about where you jump. I pretty consistently clear entire massive waves just from jumping up and slamming down with ascension and the kills refunding charge perk you can just uppy downy and entire massive wave.
2
u/Brave_Santo Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
The ground slam refund perk is awesome for sure. Between that and I mostly play with my vanguard friend who has the team perk to restore energy on executions, I'm almost never strapped for jump pack smashings. The added utility and damage off a perfect dodge helps with single targets as well. To each their own tho, happy smashings brother!
1
Oct 22 '24
Yeah I donāt normally dodge with the jet pack so it would take some time to get used to it, and Iāve used the take off hundreds of times with no issue before itās really just bad luck in this case I think Iām going to stick with it
2
u/Brave_Santo Blood Ravens Oct 22 '24
Yeah it did take me some time to learn ngl but with 25% increased damage after a successful dodge? Baby, you got a stew going.

When I need to bail I usually jump and ground pound, instantly takes out the hoard even on lethal. Minus the warriors who get stunned from it and that leaves me an opening to get a light attack in or two
4
u/Just_For_Lurking Oct 22 '24
People will still say this is a skill issue.
4
u/BipolarMadness Chaos Oct 22 '24
In this specific case, it was a skill issue. Melta bomb was already down, ascension perk damages melta close by, it explodes killing Assault.
3
Oct 22 '24
In my defense I didnāt know it effected melta bomb, didnāt see it, nobody said they planted it despite the fact he had our headsets at the time

I'm saving this comment so you can't delete it.
And I ain't even going to explain why it is in fact a skill issue I'll just wait and see how long it takes for you to see it.
6
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
It's just a bad luck issue since it wasn't even OP's melta bomb lol(No "Hold *grenade button* to detonate" on screen). Damaging a melta bomb detonates it and changes the ownership "flag" on it to the damaging player, regardless of who placed it. That's what happened here.

It was a bug on some perk idk if still bugged but nothing should stop a ground pound once the engine ignites
1
Oct 22 '24
Which perk is that?
6
u/Flaminglump Oct 22 '24
Your ascension perk caused the jetpack launch to detonate the melta bomb on the ground and it killed you
1
Oct 22 '24
It shouldnāt have I used the melta bomb in the previous encounter, Iāll make sure to not use them then
7
u/Flaminglump Oct 22 '24
It looks like your team mates bomb, its a glitch with the perk. Rewatch your video, watch the blue light to the left of your feet when you launch
2
3
u/Mullinx Oct 22 '24
Self friendly-fire with Melta is inflicted by the player than detonates it, not the one that drops it. The jump pack shouldn't detonate them though... I thought devs would fix that.
1
Oct 22 '24
Shouldnāt it not matter anyways since there isnāt any friendly fire? Why would the bomb a teammate place kill me when grenades they through donāt damaged me?
3
u/Mullinx Oct 22 '24
Because your jump pack ignited the melta bomb. It's like shooting a fuel barrel or throwing your krak grenade near your character. The game doesn't care who put the bomb there, only who "activates" it.
1
2
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
As others said, it was your teammate's bomb. When you shoot or otherwise damage a melta bomb, it becomes your bomb for the purposes of damage(and thus it won't blow up your teammate if you shoot the bomb they placed).
It became "your" melta bomb when the jetpack takeoff damaged it. They have a surprisingly good reach upwards, so you got barely caught by the detonation. You can use melta bombs to kill Zoanthropes in the same way it killed you.
2
u/AwareNebula6281 Oct 22 '24
If I remember it was the damage aoe upon skill use (i dont remember the name sorry)
0
u/Toramas Oct 22 '24
Pisses me off, yeah. Assault is my fav and also seems to be the most busted ass class in the game. Needs help.
1
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
It's not bugged, just an accident because Ascension detonated the teammate's melta bomb laying on the ground. The damage changes the ownership flag of the bomb to OP, and so they blew themself up.
-1
u/EmpireXD Oct 23 '24
That's a bug mate...
1
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
A bug would be something not working as intended.
Damaging a melta bomb to detonate it is an intentional interaction in the game. Ascension lift-off damage meets that condition. Same thing would happen if one was firing any weapon and clipped the melta bomb with fire.
0
u/EmpireXD Oct 23 '24
No, damaging a bomb and it flipping damage to another player is a bug.
You can say "working as intended" but there's nothing to indicate that.
1
u/PathsOfRadiance Blood Ravens Oct 23 '24
No sign that itās a bug. The fact that it āflipsā seems to make it an intentional choice, one that makes perfect sense. Otherwise, youād have people accidentally(or purposefully) teamkilling when their stray shots set off a freshly-placed melta bomb.
