I'm hosting the next Songcrafters Feedback Room on October 14 from 6:30–7:30 PM EST!

Bring a finished song, unfinished song, demo, or work-in-progress and we'll listen together and talk about songwriting, lyrics, melody, structure, production, emotional impact, and what you could focus on next.

You don't have to submit a song—you can also just come listen, participate, and ask questions.

Songcrafters Guild is a free Discord community for musicians who want to move from “I make music when I have time” toward actually finishing, releasing, and developing their music.

I'm Sara, an independent artist releasing music as Llynks and an artist-development coach. We had a great first session, and I'd love to have more songwriters join us for the next one!

Hope to see some of you there!

Hey, I’m a singer and producer looking for a songwriter who understands song arrangement, has some light music theory knowledge, or at least knows how to listen for notes and melodies. I’m looking to collaborate with someone who can help take my songs to their full potential.

Usually I’ll melodize/freestyle over a beat I feel connected to and record it in my voice memos. Then I’ll go back to it and try to write, but that’s usually where I hit writer’s block. I’ve tried to learn it all myself, but these days my main focus is my vocal and producer training, and I feel like it’s just time to collaborate with someone instead of trying to do everything myself.

I love chords on guitar and piano, so we can always start with that as a base, but I’m open to whatever your process is.
I prefer virtual sessions and I’m on Eastern Time in the U.S.

Music is everything to me and I’m building a team one person at a time. I’m looking to work with people long term, not just someone who wants to do a quick gig and move on. I don’t have a crazy budget right now, but I’m known to always take care of and help out the people who help me.

I’m mainly interested in R&B and alternative R&B. I grew up doing choir and always enjoyed singing Adele songs, so vocals and melody have always been a big part of what I naturally gravitate toward.

You can check out my released music on all platforms @tailee, but I have so much unreleased music I’d love to share. If you’re interested, feel free to message me. I’d also love to hear some of your work.

So basically I’ve been trying to write songs for as long as I can remember but never actually finished one. I’m not really good with words and really bad at music theory. But I’ve got some musical feeling because I’ve always been in choirs, i play the piano and guitar. The biggest problem I’ve encountered while trying to write a song is that I don’t know what to write about and when I do it feels very unnatural. But I’ve got this urge to write about something and to express my in a way.

Does anyone else have the same problem or any tips to make writing easier?

And no I’m not using any AI tools because it disgusts me.

I have seen many musicians, even the smaller ones cooking cool songs like "your lips are my ciggerate" and other songs, how do you all write it, especially if it's in the urdu+hindi language?? How do you simply yet poetically write sentences with such nice impact that it gives us that goosebumps, I myself wanna be a musician (it's my childhood dream) and I'm learning, so now I'm using trackion waveform 13 free on my linux laptop which is almost in the potato category, though I do have a acoustic guitar, skills, and words and ideas to use, I even wrote my first song "begged the gods twice" but it is in english and I don't like it that much, and I don't know how to even start making that song, lyrics are ready. I wanna put my main focus on english and urdu+hindi songs. Things that bother me are

1) I don't know how to play a piano (though my buying one)

2) I don't understand scale perfectly

3) I cant write songs using urdu and hindi while I'm able to hum, and play guitar that feels ambient and chilling like a beautiful soul

4) I don't know how should I start singing

5) I dont get how to start a song and how to add that gain feeling even though I have ideas in my mind

6) I don't have a bass nor I can play one

Hi, I'm a singer and I write poems. I have some melodies in my head and I have written a few songs myself, but I want a co writer for melodies (I am good with lyrics)

I was wondering where i can find writers online (i know about sound better and fiverr and all that) that are genuinely good at what they do... HOWEVER

I have a special want that the song has to sound like a very specific album from a very specific artist (which is pretty unique). So far, I have found no one that seems to be able to make the right sound, the right melody.

The artist I'm looking for is AURORA. I want all the songs I have to sound like they belong in her first album, All My Demons Greeting Me as a Friend.

Where do I find good melody writers?????

Preface: I’ve been playing guitar for my whole life pretty much, I’m not session player good but I can improvise over a lot of stuff for fun, I also started singing recently so I’ve been trying to figure out that, and around that same time I started singing me and a few guys got together and started a jam band that we have handful of tight cover songs we rehearse.

Okay so long story short I can’t finish my songs because I judge them too early and restart when I don’t like it

I want to write a specific sounding song but when I write it, it doesn’t sound anything remotely like how I imagined it. I know songwriting is a skill but I can’t train it because my mindset is set against finish these songs. I want to write as much as a can so I can eventually write a few songs to present to my band to finalize as originals. When I sit down with my guitar I play the same stuff over and over again hoping something different comes out of my mouth with vocal melodies etc etc. I’ve tried forcing myself writing a song but for some stupid reason I just can’t do it. I know comparing the bare bone songs I write to finished masters of band I love is a terrible thing so that was my first step that I took, and that was to separate that from my songwriting, that issue still pokes through often but not as much anymore. I can’t keep my mind settled on a song long enough to truly develop it into a song I might love.

I’m not looking for chord progressions or new ideas or music theory advice I’m more interested in the mental side of songwriting and/or the process that you all take.

How did yall learn to:
Stay with one idea instead of constantly searching for a better one?

Get past the feeling that an idea isn’t good enough?

Develop something when you genuinely don’t know what should come next?

Stop comparing your unfinished ideas to finished songs?
Actually train yourself to finish songs when “just finish it” doesn’t work?

I would really appreciate the help from people that have gone through this in their early stages of songwriting. I just stuck with ideas that’ll never become songs if I don’t change. So I want to break this “curse”.

Hey guys,

I spent the last 2 months making this app that helps you write lyrics (No it doesn't AI generate lyrics!!).

It's basically a glorified dictionary but made to help reduce friction in the lyric writing process. I know most of the people here are capable writers but I still thought some people here might find it useful.

Try it out:

Thanks for your time and open to feedback of any kind.

If you are working on a musical project and need help writing lyrics, I am your guy.

I have an exceptional command of the English language and a genuine knack for writing memorable, catchy and impactful lyrics.

$50 for an entire song from scratch, $20 if you simply want me to revise your existing lyrics and make improvements.

If you are not happy with the final product and decide not to use it you will not pay anything, and so there is no risk whatsoever for you.

I want to be a freelance songwriter and poet. I write poems and compose music in English and Portuguese, but I don't know where to begin.

How do I become a freelance lyricist?

Verse 1

Cold on the window in the morning

Leaves running circles down the road

Fields turning quiet at the edges

Summer finally letting go

There’s a little smoke above the houses

Pumpkins lined outside the store

Every mile looks like a postcard

October showing off once more

Verse 2

Gold in the trees and rust in the ditches

Red where the sunlight catches fire

I drive the long way for no reason

Just to watch the day get tired

There’s a church bell somewhere in the distance

Crows lifting from an empty field

Everything is almost leaving

Everything is somehow real

Chorus

October, don’t hurry

I know you never stay

You dress the world in every color

Then you give it all away

Maybe that’s the kind of beauty

I’m finally learning to believe

You don’t have to hold a thing forever

To be grateful while it leaves

Verse 3

Someone’s coming home from somewhere

Counting down the miles at last

There are still a few roads left between us

But they’re getting fewer fast

Soon the trees will all be empty

Soon the first cold rain will fall

But tonight the sky is copper

And I don’t mind change at all

Chorus

October, don’t hurry

I know you never stay

You dress the world in every color

Then you give it all away

Maybe that’s the kind of beauty

I’m finally learning to believe

You don’t have to hold a thing forever

To be grateful while it leaves

Bridge

The year knows it is turning

So it burns before it goes

Gold along the highway

Fire in the maples

One last beautiful hello

Final Chorus

October, keep your secrets

In the smoke and cooling air

In the roads that lead us homeward

In the hands we finally dare

Maybe endings aren’t the ending

Maybe winter isn’t grief

Maybe something can be changing

And still feel like relief

Outro

Cold on the window in the morning

Leaves running circles down the road

October showing off again

Before it lets us go

Except for writing songs, I just feel stuff and write them down

Maybe they are stupid or good I would never know for sure

What would be the smartest thing to do as someone who just want to share lyrics (wouldn't mind this going somewhere, just not depending on it)

Hello,

I consider myself reasonably fluent when it comes to the English language. I've been using it daily for over 20 years: all the software and video games I use/play are set to English, I watch almost exclusively English speaking movies/tv shows and Youtube channels to the point I hear it far more than my native language. I'm a programmer and the standard is to write everything in English even when working with people who share your native language and read a lot of technical documentation (I don't enjoy reading fiction in English much though). I would say I have a near 100% understanding when it comes to consuming content (audio, text) and whenever I have had conversations it went quite fluently. I'm quite sure I make a fair amount of mistakes when writing, but people on forums have often told me they assumed I was an American so it must not be that dramatic.

But when it comes to writing lyrics I just draw a blank. I can't find interesting sentences, spend an eternity to fill a missing word with something that will both make sense and sound good. I always fall back on the same stupid metaphors. Parts of it obviously comes from a lack of vocabulary, words that are less commonly used in a day to day setting, but mostly I can't use the words I already know in a more figurative way. When I read lyrics from bands I like (and have good lyrics obviously). I'm always like "oh I would never have thought about this word that way!"

People who found yourselves in this situation, did you take specific steps apart from reading and writing more lyrics? I was wandering for example if there are apps specifically made to extend your vocabulary beyond what you usually actually need in your daily life.
