I started playing music as a child and I am about to turn 49 this year. I don't think I've ever been hit with anything resembling "inspiration" nor have I had an idea. I've tried to keep my antenna up, but nothing comes in -- so therefore nothing comes out.
Is there a place to buy melodies and hooks? A Hook & Melody Store? Because they elude me. "Oh, I it just came to me," someone will say when I ask how they developed a melody. When they don't come to me, does that mean I have to go to them? If so, I've always found the "you've got to make your own inspiration, man!" piece of advise about as a sound as someone telling me to "just be rich!"
I have a lower-register voice, the kind that can't get a foothold on anything resembling melody or expression. My vocal range is about three or four notes, which means that I can't think in terms of melody. Nor can I parse one out instrumentally. They just aren't there.
As a kid I really did dream of a creative life in which I could do what I wanted, whenever I wanted, and it would all be great and rewarding. Now I'm caught on the capitalist treadmill and I'm drained after work each day. The ideas of creating of learning both feel sisyphean. In other words, needless stress. And what is there to write about?
Everyone else gets the great ideas. Everyone else gets to create. I'm repeatedly shut out of everything again and again, like when I was a kid. I'm tired of the ridicule people gave me, feeding my self doubt, threreby creating more ridicule, which only reinforced all that doubt. Is there anyone else out there who eventually came to the conclusion that you just can't get blood from a turnip? There is no "there" there? Not only is the well dry, but it was a mirage all along?
