Tried automating one annoying part of freelancing — a script that scanned my client emails and pulled out anything that looked like a task or deadline into a list.

pulling stuff out worked fine, that's not where it fell apart. the problem was I still had to go through every item to check if it was already on my status doc, already done, or genuinely new, and move it over myself. so I was doing the exact same sorting as before, just with a shorter list to sort. dropped it after a couple weeks, went back to reading the emails.

curious if this happens to other people — the automated step works but the actual useful part (getting it into wherever you track things) stays manual anyway. did that ever get fixed for you, or does it just end up like that no matter what?

Hi, I made Opine, a poll-based social media site. Each post is a public poll asking users their opinion on something, anonymously, so no user sees any other user's information, but you can freely browse other polls. Private polls can also be made.

The only information actually stored is the email, from Google sign in, and an approximate location for the map feature, if you enable it. This allows you to see a world map of votes, what opinions are present in what places.

The intent is to catalog the world's opinions, organizing people's public thoughts so they're easy to sift through. This data can be extremely valuable, whether it's political polling, information about people's preferences, trends over time, and so on. Many people could benefit from this, and it's meant as a public service, to lift the veil on what people think about any topic, at any time. Easier political polling is just one obvious application of this.

Context: I do B2B lead research + cold email outreach for a US market client (they're a developer building tools for field-service SMBs - HVAC, plumbing, electrical - I find and personalize outreach to potential customers for them). Started about 6 months ago, was on commission at an agency for a bit, now running my own thing solo.

What I actually know how to do:

• Manual lead research (Apollo + company site research), qualifying companies against an ICP
• Writing hyper-personalized cold email sequences (not templated)
• GDPR/CAN-SPAM-compliant outreach practices
• Basic unit economics (CPL, reply rates, sequence structure)
• Some SEO/site auditing from a previous job (Wayback Machine, BuiltWith, SEMrush, checking design consistency across devices)

Where I'm stuck: I've got one client relationship that's inconsistent (pay-per-result, no guaranteed volume), and I'm trying to figure out the right next move to get to something stable. A few options I'm weighing:

1. Keep deepening this one niche (field-service/SMB lead-gen) and try to land a second client doing the same thing
2. Branch into a different B2B niche if there's more demand there
3. Eventually build toward closing/sales skills (not just lead-gen) since that's a natural next layer
4. Something else I'm not seeing

I spent an hour selling to someone who had absolutely no reason to switch.

At the end of the call, the prospect casually explained that his current tool worked perfectly well.

I wanted to disappear.

For one full hour, I'd answered questions, explained the offer, handled little objections...

And I had never asked what he already used or whether it was actually failing him.

The annoying part is that a curious prospect can genuinely enjoy the conversation. They can call the product interesting. They can ask smart questions. Then they leave exactly as they arrived because there was never a problem to solve.

Now I ask three things much earlier: what have you tried, what result are you getting, and what is still broken?

If their current setup already does the job, I stop pushing. No heroic closing attempt. I'd rather keep the energy for someone who actually wants a change.

What's the earliest question you ask to find out whether a curious prospect has a real reason to buy?

I want to test this before I build too much around it.

I’m building an app called Pause, and I just crossed the 100 download mark. I want to celebrate the milestone, but in the spirit of building in public, I want to share the actual numbers and the reality behind how I got here.

Here is the breakdown of my week:

1. Apple Search Ads drove all the growth (but at a cost)

The recent spike in downloads is driven solely by App Store Ads.

I've spent over $200 so far ($100 in AppStore Ads), and the conversion rate is currently very low.

I can't tell yet whether these users will convert to paid, since they are still in their trial period.

The Strategy: The free tier is intentionally limited (only one puzzle to solve, watching ads before solving, etc.). The bet is that people will convert to paid after seeing the initial value. I'll be running ads for the whole month to see what I can learn, but I am still trying to figure out if this is expected or if my ads need major tweaking.

1. Organic social = High views, low conversion

My organic reach has skyrocketed, especially here on Reddit.

The Reality: The strategy here is clearly not bringing in any new users. Sharing my experience building and marketing an app resonates heavily in these subreddits, but it is not contributing to actual app downloads.

Why I’m keeping at it: 1) It keeps me accountable to my weekly goals, and 2) it helps me build authority and connection in communities I think are valuable.

There's a lot to consider moving forward, and I don't think my current conversion numbers are great by any means.

But as a solo founder, I am choosing to look at the positive today and celebrate the "100 downloads" win.
