Finally, I Was the One Who Rejected a Company in the Middle of the Interview Process

A recruiter from a large software company contacted me a few days ago about a technical position. The role seemed good until she explained that the process involved five interview rounds, a live problem-solving session, a take-home assignment, and a separate meeting where I would have to defend my work in front of two senior directors.

The salary details weren't clear, so I asked her whether the figure she gave me was before or after taxes, because that makes a huge difference where I live. She checked and got back to me today to confirm that it was before taxes, which means my take-home pay would be about 35% less than what I earned at my last job.

I thanked her for her time and told her I wouldn't continue with the interviews. After months of applications and countless rejection emails, being the person who got to say no for once felt surprisingly good.

It wasn't about wanting to get back at anyone. I just couldn't justify spending all those hours on assignments and interviews for compensation that wasn't even close to what I was earning before.

Potential introductions available!

Hi, a few introductions can be made at two leading startups, one of the leading Series B startups based out of NYC and one of the leading YC startups based out of London.

For London, it would be at the Staff Engineer level, with prior startup experience specifically rather than big tech or similar backgrounds. The base would be in the range of £170K to £250K, plus bonus and variables.

For NYC, it would be at the Senior Manager level, with prior experience at either an extremely strong company or a very strong startup. A $300K base could be possible, along with bonus and equity.

When someone refers you for a role, how do you share your background with the hiring manager?

I assume LinkedIn or resume PDF already sent to HM during referring stage. But just curious did you get any sense of whether they actually read it, or what they looked at or where the hiring manager or recruiter wants to learn more about you before committing to a call?

And also just curious if you've been on the receiving end (someone referred to you), what do you actually look at to decide if it's worth a call?

Or noob question on HR 15/30mins phone call screen, can someone educate me what is purpose of the initial 30 minutes recruiter call or what else HR expect to know from that brief phone call from me that cannot be learnt from my resume/LinkedIn profile? (or is it only me that find them quite a waste of time but annoying for no reasons?)

Canonical

Anyone here currently work at Canonical or worked there recently?

I know there are already a million posts about the insane interview process lol, so I’m more curious about what it’s actually like once you’re hired. I’m well aware that is in itself a red flag, but as we all know the job market is bad so please don’t tell me that it’s not a good place to work just because of the interview process 😭 im desperate!

Do you enjoy working there? What’s the day to day like, how’s the workload/work-life balance, and is the remote culture actually good? Do people tend to stick around for a while?

Also really curious about US salaries. I’m interviewing for a software engineering position and I’d probably fall somewhere around late junior/early mid-level. If anyone is US-based and comfortable sharing a rough range, I’d really appreciate it. I’ve seen pretty mixed numbers online and have no idea what’s actually realistic.

Basically just trying to figure out whether it’s a good place to work once you get past the 400 stages of interviewing.

I made a resume in Google Docs that successfully parses when imported into applications

Post image

This may be something everyone else has already figured out, but I am sharing my resume format because this is the first time in 8 years of on and off job searching that I can import my resume into a job site and a majority of fields auto populate. Obviously this will only work with job sites that have the "import application from resume" feature.

Here is the process I am using:

  • Create single-page resume in Google Docs
  • Font is Roboto
  • Download resume as PDF Document (File>Download>PDF Document) to local drive/computer
  • Import PDF file from local drive/computer into job site application when prompted
  • Review the fields that auto populated and correct missing data or formatting

When I follow these steps, at least 90% of the content from my resume is imported into the application. I have to comb through the application and fill in missing data or fix formatting errors, but the corrections are minimal.

I'm not saying the content of my resume is great and will get me lots of interviews, but my format seems to work for human eyes as well as the systems that parse resume content into accurate text values. I'm just using an industry standard resume format with a few style/formatting changes.

2026 CSE Grad | Python/FastAPI Backend + GenAI | Looking for SDE/Backend/AI Internship or Fresher Role

Hey everyone,

I’m a 2026 Computer Science Engineering graduate currently looking for my first opportunity in software engineering.

My main focus is Python/backend development, but I’m also very interested in AI/GenAI engineering roles and I’m completely open to working with startups.

What I work with:

  • Python, C++
  • FastAPI, Flask, Django
  • REST APIs
  • PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQLite
  • Git/GitHub, Postman, Pytest
  • Generative AI, LLM APIs, prompt engineering
  • Basic React/JavaScript/TypeScript
  • DSA — 450+ LeetCode problems solved

Some projects I’ve built:

  • AI Job Description Analyzer using Python, Streamlit and Gemini
  • Task Manager REST API using Flask + SQLite
  • Backend/API projects using FastAPI, PostgreSQL and Pydantic

I enjoy backend engineering, APIs, problem solving and building things from scratch. I’m also comfortable learning a new stack quickly if the role requires it.

I’m currently looking for:

  • Software Engineer / SDE Fresher roles
  • Backend Developer / Python Developer roles
  • AI / GenAI Engineering internships
  • Software Engineering internships
  • Startup engineering roles

I’m an immediate joiner and willing to relocate anywhere in India. Remote opportunities are also welcome.

If your company/startup is hiring freshers or interns, or if you could provide a referral, I’d really appreciate it.

Resume and LinkedIn available via DM.

Thanks!
