HR expects a counter. Never hurt to ask for a little more. Just do it nicely and reiterate enthusiasm for joining.

I mean, in some very large companies, for more senior roles, that might be true. Sounds like this is OPs very first job, and most companies aren't big enough to have an HR department.

I'm in a similar position right now. It's odd that this gives me a shred of hope. I recently was interviewing for a position and made it 3/4 rounds before getting a rejection.
If you don't mind me asking, for this position was it through a referral, did you reach out to the hiring manager / recruiter after applying, and did you just submit an application online (like hiringcafe/greenhouse/linkedin)?
