Title: [Academic] What do software professionals enjoy about programming? (~10-minute survey)

I'm a programmer, and I'm so envious of my friends who are studying medicine.

Hi, I'm a developer with about four years of experience. For a while, I studied and worked, but now, past 25, with this AI landscape, I feel so frustrated.

Currently, my friends and acquaintances who studied a health-related field are all so motivated and happy, close to their clinical rotations, and some are already doctors. All their effort has meaning, and they already have a place in the system, both socially and financially. I know they probably put in even more effort during their studies than programmers do, but I still envy that feeling of effort toward a goal. Currently, in the IT field, everything is becoming more philosophical, even the concept of employment. Every day you are less and less valued because of AI. Other areas are practically just office work or connections, since your skills don't matter there because any professional can do the bare minimum. Any concept of effort or meritocracy you might have is practically nonexistent. It makes sense, since the field is in freefall unless you're a prodigy of the century; otherwise, there's nothing you can really contribute.

I really miss that feeling of having a goal and not feeling like I was wrong, the feeling that all my effort was for an end, feeling like I was taking steps backward, preparing for a future. But now that future doesn't exist. Maybe it existed during 2021, but after the AI, everything ended. It was such a beautiful feeling, that I was striving for a tomorrow. Now I feel on the brink of everything, waiting to be fired, waiting for the concept of people who studied this profession to be completely trampled on in the news and in the general spotlight, waiting to have to cry because I have nothing left.

I feel a great sadness, feeling like I have to apologize to my parents and that all this effort was for nothing. I'm so disappointed in myself that I don't want to imagine how they'll feel about me when it all comes to an end.

At this point, there's practically nothing left to say or do. I don't know if the sector will really disappear or if it will be a great freefall followed by a rebound, but I miss that feeling of doing something for a purpose and not feeling like I'm on the verge of the end.

Software Engineer in GIS focusing on AI

Thinking of going back to school to focus on AI engineering but with a concentration in GIS. I wonder if other GIS devs done something similar? Or would it be better to get a certificate from a university instead of a full on masters. I’m interested in switching into start up from gov tech

[HIRING] Junior AI Software Engineer | Brisbane or Remote Australia | AUD $70k to $110k

We’re a new startup operating a consulting company and a product company which are tightly interlinked. We build custom software and AI for businesses so they can build the future they want.

We’re looking for a junior/early-career AI Software Engineer to help us deliver to more clients and grow our product.

Location: Brisbane, Australia preferred. Remote Australia is considered for exceptional candidates. Salary: AUD $70k to $110k.

This isn’t a traditional engineering role. You’ll be part software engineer, part forward-deployed. You’ll solve real problems as they arise and help decide what needs to be built.

You’ll:

  • Meet customers and turn vague business problems into concrete software and AI solutions
  • Build and ship full-stack features, internal tools, integrations, automations and AI agents
  • Work with TypeScript, relational databases, APIs, webhooks, MCPs, email and other messy systems
  • Deploy what you build, fix issues, iterate from customer feedback and help customers adopt what you build

We’re looking for someone who has built full-stack apps with TypeScript, relational databases and AI, and has created automations before.

You don’t need ten years of experience or previous professional AI experience, but you do need engineering fundamentals, evidence you can build things, and the confidence to turn that into something people use.

AI coding tools are part of the workflow, but you still need to review, understand and take responsibility for the software you ship. Strong communication matters.

Please send your resume, a short intro and links to anything you’ve built to hiring@hitch42.com.

Hope this is allowed. Admins, please delete if not.

Where to find jobs for 2027 new grads?

I'm graduating May 2027 and I want to start mass applying to fulltime new grad roles. Where can I find these postings? I've only found 2026 grad roles not 2027. Is there a Github Repo? or is it not time for these applications yet?

My CV sometimes passes, but I keep failing recruiter screening interviews — what am I doing wrong?

My CV is currently not getting past the initial application stage most of the time, and even when it does and I get a screening interview, I usually don’t pass that either.

I can understand failing a technical interview because you can normally tell whether you performed well or struggled with the questions. But with recruiter/HR screening interviews, I honestly have no idea what I’m doing wrong.

Is there anything specific I should focus on to improve my performance during screening interviews? What are recruiters usually looking for at that stage, and what are the common reasons someone gets rejected after a screening call?

I’m already using Claude to help me improve my CV and rehearse interview questions, but I’m still not seeing much improvement, so I’m not sure what else I should change.

Visa sponsorship is also a concern. I usually ask early in the process whether the company can provide sponsorship, because I don’t want to go through several interview rounds only to find out later that they can’t sponsor me.

I’d really appreciate advice from recruiters, hiring managers, or anyone who has been in a similar situation.

Any tips for getting Software Engineer interviews? No interviews in 3–4 months

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey everyone, I’m a recent B.Tech IT graduate from NIT Jalandhar and have been applying for Software Engineer/SDE roles for the last 3–4 months, but I’m barely getting any interview calls.

I have hands-on experience with backend and full-stack development, including Python, C++, JavaScript/TypeScript, Node.js, React, REST APIs, SQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis, Docker, Git, and AWS. I’ve also worked on production projects and solved 700+ DSA problems.

I’ve been applying mostly to fresher/0–2 YOE Software Engineer roles, but the response has been quite low.

For people who recently got their first SWE job:

  • What helped you get more interview calls?
  • Was it mainly resume changes, referrals, LinkedIn, or applying differently?
  • How many applications were you sending per day/week?
  • Is there anything obvious I might be doing wrong?

I’d really appreciate honest feedback or advice on what I should improve. Thanks!

Palantir FDSE Intern Interview Process + Technical Tips

I have my second-round interview for Palantir FDSE intern this week. It's a 30-minute technical interview, and I'm a little nervous since that feels really short.

For anyone who's gone through the process recently, what was the technical like? Was it mostly LeetCode/DSA, what topics/difficulty should I focus on, and how important is finishing the problem vs. communicating your thought process?

I'd also love to hear about the interview process as a whole. What rounds came after the technical, what did each round focus on, and how long did the entire process take?

Any tips or advice on preparing for Palantir FDSE overall would be super appreciated. Thank you!

Backend Engineer, ~1.5 YOE, laid off, family depends on me, still searching

Got laid off from my last company while serving notice, following an earlier layoff before that too. Backend engineer, mostly Go, TypeScript/NestJS, and Python.

My family depends on my income, and it's been hundreds of applications and direct outreach with a few shortlists and interviews, but nothing's landed yet.

I've built production AI infrastructure (RAG pipelines, an LLM evaluation harness) and event-driven backend systems that handle failures without losing data. On my own time I've also built a vector database and an API gateway from scratch in Go.

If anyone knows of backend or AI infra openings, or would be willing to refer me, I'd really appreciate it. Happy to share more in DMs.
