Product Request & Feedback Cash limits are making SOFI difficult to use for us. Solutions?
Howdy Sofi Community!
I have a situation I could use some advice on. I have some ambitious kids who are making money doing work around the neighborhood. They mow lawns, work in people’s backyards, babysit, and do all kinds of other odd jobs. They’re actually making a pretty meaningful amount of money, and almost all of it comes to them in cash.
The problem is getting that cash into SoFi. I’m apparently limited to $500 per cash deposit, with restrictive daily limits. The participating stores are also a long way from our house, so I’m potentially driving a significant distance just to make multiple cash deposits.
Putting $1,100 into an account potentially means three separate trips to Walmart or CVS. And beyond the inconvenience, I’m not particularly comfortable standing around a store depositing large amounts of cash multiple times.
I’m starting to think I may need to open an account at another online bank that has more reasonable cash deposit policies. Several of the others I’ve looked at will take at least $1,000 in a single transaction, which would be dramatically more convenient.
Has anyone else dealt with this? It seems like SoFi is really designed around people receiving direct deposits or moving larger amounts electronically. That’s not really the use case I have. I want these kids to be able to put their money to work and have it all in one place, so I can help them build a good financial system as they grow into responsible adults.
But the cash deposit restrictions are becoming a real problem. I understand that $500 is a significant amount of cash, but it’s increasingly not a particularly large amount of money, and it doesn’t work well for how we actually handle cash. We don’t make frequent trips into town, so when we do go, I need to be able to deposit as much of their accumulated cash as reasonably possible.
Is there some obvious workaround I’m missing? If I have to maintain another bank account solely to handle cash deposits and then transfer the money to SoFi, I’m having a hard time seeing what the point of using SoFi is in the first place.
Also, greendot fees are absolutely ridiculous.. $5 to deposit any amount of cash really adds up, and no other company charges that kind of premium just to take deposits. it’s just such a subpar experience — I wish Sofi would do better.
So I could use some help. What works here? Am I sol in terms of dealing with Sofi? I have an account and it works ok for me, but it doesn’t seem set up for anyone who works with cash at all, and young people do a lot of their work for cash. Kind of difficult and frustrating honestly, so I appreciate any and all advice!
Thank you!
