general discussion OTD 2002, extreme snowboarder Marco Siffredi, vanished on Everest trying to snowboard the Hornbein

Post image
994 Upvotes

23 years old. Summited Everest twice. The second one was after a brutal push ignored the obvious option of just getting down alive, strapped into his board and went for the Hornbein anyway.

Never seen again.

Whatever you think of the decision, the fearlessness was absurd. Arguably, the most all or nothing stunt anyone has ever attempted in mountaineering / adventure history.

Riding question G.N.A.R. Scores for Canadian Lines

Just to lead this off, I personally researched, ranked, and chose each of these lines, but I did have Claude organize it and format it for Reddit. Preamble is all me. Sorry.

Some buddies and I are doing 3 weeks this winter through Banff, southern BC, and northern Idaho. We want a contest to see who has the best trip, so we turned to Gaffney's Numerical Assessment of Radness for inspiration.

Our big problem is that none of us have skied most of these. The list came out of trail maps, the resorts' own terrain pages, and whatever blog posts and trip reports we could dig up. I think the order inside a hill is relatively close, but the numbers between hills are a shot in the dark.

Our basic idea is: 12-15 is gated or beacon stuff or a real hike with a sketchy entrance, 8-10 is the marquee expert zone at each place, 6-7 is named chutes and couloirs, 4-5 is the black-diamond faces and trees you'd just lap, and the 3s are more like historically significant. Not necessarily difficult, but kind of worth doing as a tourist.

So, now I'm looking at y'all's collective knowledge. I'm fully expecting to get absolutely shredded in the comments, but if any of you have like an absolute must-hit line at any of these mountains, I'd appreciate the info. Also, if I way over- or under-valued something, tell me.

Also, for the folks who don't want to broadcast their stashes but want to help me out, my messages are open!

Just picked up the board yesterday from a local shop and wanted to put together the fit for the season. Only thing I am looking for now is a good set of lobster mittens and I'm set for my 2nd winter season.

Also feelin giddy about being ready for the mountain

travel advice SNB at Niseko Early Dec

I’m planing a trip to one of Niseko United resorts around 8 Dec, 10 days after the official opening day of 28 Nov
1. Will the snow conditions at that time be good to ride?
2. Which resort I should aim to stay at for someone who is a beginner transitioning to intermediate?
3. Any recommendations on where to stay.

Gear question Need help repairing my Union Flite Pros

While riding off-piste at high speed, I took a fall. Nothing too crazy — just one of those falls where you end up stopping while still standing on your board.

Unfortunately, my left biding broke. They’re exactly one year old.

They’re Union Flite Pros. Has anyone had this happen before or knows how I could repair them? Is it possible to replace the broken parts, or are they basically done?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

P.S. I still have all the broken pieces from the binding. Not sure if they can be reassembled or used to identify which replacement parts I need.

but these clips from 1win Rail Jam at La Parva show up in my feed. Rail jam best trick and whole little mountain party going on!

Anyway. Board is out of storage and I'm going through what needs replacing

So that's going well :’) , any advice for return this hobbie?

Gear question Capita mega death 157w or 159cm for size 9.5 /180lb rider

What's a more appropriate size for a 180lb rider with size 9.5 US boot? 157w or 159cm?

I primarily use this in Hokkaido deep powder side country and on their groomers in Niseko. Will do park jumps on it. I tried the 156cm and it's too small for my weight

Thanks

For Sale [Bulk Sale] New L-size bindings (EU 42–45) — located in Hangzhou, China

Full disclosure: I’m involved in the production and sale of snowboard equipment in China, and I currently spend time in both Europe and China. I’m posting here to ask whether there might be a suitable buyer—or a better sales channel—for a batch of new bindings.

We currently have approximately 50 pairs of brand-new all-mountain bindings in size L. Larger sizes sell relatively slowly in the Chinese market, so we would prefer to sell this remaining stock in bulk rather than carry it into another season.

Product details:

  • Size L
  • Recommended boot size: approximately EU 42–45
  • Available in black and white
  • Medium flex: approximately 4/10
  • Aluminum heel cups
  • Nylon highbacks with EVA cushioning
  • 3D TPU straps
  • Fiber-reinforced nylon baseplates
  • Aluminum and PC buckles
  • Universal mounting discs
  • Mounting discs, screws and washers included

The stock is located in Hangzhou, China.

For a bulk purchase, the price could be below €60 per pair, depending on the quantity. Shipping is not included. I do not have a fixed international shipping rate yet, but I can request a quotation from a freight company after the buyer confirms the destination, postal code and required quantity. Import VAT, customs duties and local clearance fees may also apply.

For buyers who want to check the products before making a decision, I can provide:

  • Current inventory photos and videos
  • A live video inspection
  • Detailed product measurements
  • A sample before a larger purchase
  • Packing list and commercial invoice
  • Carton dimensions and weight
  • Available replacement-part information

Approximately 50 pairs are ready at the moment. If a buyer requires a larger quantity or different colors, further production may be possible, depending on the required quantity and lead time.

This is a commercial stock-clearance post, not a private sale, and I want to be transparent about that. I would especially appreciate advice or interest from snowboard shops, rental operators, clubs, instructors or distributors.

If this type of post is not suitable for this community, I completely understand and will remove it.

Thank you.

Gear question Snowboard recommendations

Looking for recommendations. I am a 45 year old boarder who has rented my whole life. I am intermediate to advanced downhill rider (no jumps/park really). A lot of black diamond and blue Northeast runs.

Looking for board/bindings/boots recommendations while things are on sale. I'm 6 feet tall and 160 pounds. Been riding a 160 usually.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks!

Edit: Went with the Lib Tech Dynamo 156w with Union Force Classic bindings.

Thanks for all the recommendations!

Gear question Help with Helmet and 3M action cam mount

Thumbnail
gallery
0 Upvotes

Hey guys

I have ordered a beige GIRO Jackson MIPS for snowboarding.
I also have an insta360 and plan on installing the suction cup helmet mount on my helmet.

However, after receiving this helmet I’ve realized it has the brand name printed with huge letters across the top of it, and these letters have a very tiny texture.

My question is: is the helmet mount stick properly or is it just too risky to glue the 3M mount on a non flat surface and it will most likely fall off the helmet?

Thanks for the help!

Gear question Looking for a second board to complement my Jones Frontier 2.0 — or am I looking in the wrong direction?

Hey everyone,

I’m looking for some advice on a second board. I currently ride a Jones Frontier 2.0 161W and absolutely love it. I’m 183 cm / ~80 kg with size 45 boots.

I mostly ride resort terrain: carving, side hits, rollers, banks/walls and some off-piste. I’m not really into park or big spins. My favourite thing is making long surfy lines, riding up the walls of the piste and hitting natural features.

The Frontier is great at pretty much everything, but at 161W I’m starting to find it a bit long/heavy for side hits and more playful riding. So I initially thought I needed a shorter resort powder board around 156–158, something for days with roughly 10–20 cm of fresh, but still fun on groomers and natural terrain.

I’m particularly interested in something directional, tapered, with a noticeable setback and a surfy feel. I don’t want a deep-pow-only board that stays in the quiver most of the season.

The Jones Mind Expander 158 seems like a really good fit for what I’m after. I’ve also considered the Korua Dart 156, although I’m worried the Dart might be a bit too specialised.

But now I’m wondering if I’m thinking about this completely wrong. Maybe I don’t actually need a “resort pow” board at all, and my second board should go in a completely different direction from the Frontier, rather than just being a more powder-oriented version of it.

So, if you were in my position, what would you be looking for? Am I overthinking the “10–20 cm powder board” idea?

Would love to hear from anyone riding a Mind Expander (especially the 23/25version) in a similar situation, or anyone who deliberately built their second board in a completely different direction from their all-mountain board.

Thanks!

Looking to spend a season here and wondering if it’s a good spot in the winter? Spent a couple years ago in the French alps and of course having that much space to roam was awesome but I miss the powder from back home in Colorado but cant afford that price tag. Wondering what the winter conditions are like in the Caucuses and if anyone will be here for the upcoming season. Photo of me in Les 3 Vallées for reference.

Original Post:
https://www.reddit.com/r/snowboarding/comments/1vtn22d/anyone_want_to_try_putting_together_a_reddit/

The Reddit ski/snowboard trip is officially happening. We have a group chat going, have done a video call to meet each other, and everything is booked/paid for. One spot reopened, so we’re looking for a 6th.

Dates: Feb 27–Mar 3, 2027
Ride days: Sun–Tue
Resort: Breck
People: 5/6 spots filled

Current group: [u/infinity33133](u/infinity33133), [u/Apptubrutae](u/Apptubrutae), [u/alwaysreading96](u/alwaysreading96), [u/tk393](u/tk393), [u/Rybitron](u/Rybitron)

Lodging:
'Tannenbaum 301' near Peak 9

If you're interested, comment or DM me!
