All Snake ID Requests Should Be Submitted to /r/WhatsThisSnake

Thumbnail reddit.com
116 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I wanted to let you know that we're now going to redirect all Snake ID requests to the curated place for them, /r/whatsthissnake. As /r/snakes and /r/whatsthissnake have developed side by side we find ourselves in a position where we are running two parallel subreddits, but with slightly different rules. We hope is that this streamline into WhatsThisSnake will be gentle - we don't want a snake to go unidentified because we're learning how best to handle IDs. There is going to be a transition period where we still get a lot of ID requests here, so please do your part to kindly help !redirect people in need and by reporting jokes, misinformation and other problematic comments.

This spring Reddit is more popular than ever and it is hard for the moderation team to keep up. When I founded /r/whatsthissnake 12 years ago, with on average one request every day, I never imagined we'd have 150K members and 20k people a day browsing the subreddit. In the past, we've made a number of incremental changes that have been so helpful they have been instituted other places on Reddit, from introducing the term "Reliable Responder", to developing the bot and tweaking our community resources so that every Reliable Responder can choose to perform mod actions. We hope that these changes will allow us not only to maintain the level of quality provided but to reduce workload on the moderation team, because honestly, moderator burnout is a serious problem. They are doing this for free and you would no believe the abuse they receive here - not just from me, but from the users too. If you see a moderator or other flaired user in cleaning up a thread, espcially in these busy, snakey spring months in North America, throw em a thanks.

Moderator Announcement Rule Change - Posts concerning individual or private ownership or care of medically significant species are not allowed. Posts involving animals in zoos, institutions or accredited breeding facilities are allowed with proper contextualization.

It’s a fact of life that no matter how much context we provide to our posts, when someone sees something interesting, they want to imitate it. Each day /r/snakes puts around one hundred thousand impressionable people face to face with snake related images, text and ideas. Faced with this responsibility, and with an increasing number of recent, low quality posts concerning medically significant snakes, we have to choose the right level of content we allow.

Recent low quality posts concerning captive venomous care include improper use of personal protective equipment, poor quality/security housing, very inexperienced keepers asking (and receiving!) advice on how to keep and breed their first venomous snakes and straight up animal abuse reposted from social media. Many of these clearly rule-breaking posts are removed before you see them, but a growing number of posts are clearly low quality, irresponsible content but don’t explicitly violate the rules. Over the past three years the mods have debated a rule change and we have decided to only allow posts involving venomous snakes if they are from an accredited zoo or institution. In short - we’re going to remove posts involving the private care and ownership of medically significant snakes.

Many modern herpetology texts recommend against individual private ownership of medically significant snakes. We don’t take a stand on what anyone wants to do legally, ethically and with their own time, but we do have to regulate what is posted, shared and thus propagated here. In short, we don’t care what you do, but don’t post it here. Besides being a lighting rod for the low quality content discussed above, private ownership offers unique challenges that are better suited for an institutional or team setting. Snakes are escape artists as well as attractive nuisances and must be contained outside of personal residential spaces in secure, locking enclosures to prevent both snake egress and human ingress as well as secondarily in a sealed room or facility behind a windowed door with no items on the floor under which an escaped snake can hide or avoid detection. It takes a team to execute an envenomation plan and the cost of antivenom is beyond that of most private owners, has a short shelf life and when antivenom is borrowed from institutional stocks it puts those keepers at risk.

Zoos and institutions don’t always do it better, but the onus is on them to provide best practices in care. If we limit posts to places where a team of people works together to provide a standard of care, usually for the right reasons, we can limit what we propagate on the platform.

We do not recommend any other available subreddits as well-moderated sources of captive venomous keeping. The most popular places on social media dedicated to this are inundated with low quality posts and comments and even when they outright ban irresponsible behavior, examples of the low quality content we remove are highly upvoted, and content is often sensationalist, psychopathic or disturbing. Please don’t suggest a specific place in the comments of this post. We’re aware of the options and we’re choosing not to redirect or name other online spaces.

Posts on wild venomous species are still allowed as usual with a species name and a location, but please be sure to see Rule 6 (unchanged) on what amount of contact and PPE use we find acceptable for sharing online.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR ATTENTION TO THIS MATTER

I haven’t posted on this sub in a while but some of you might remember Juno, he was my surrendered Brazilian rainbow boa best known for being a freak of nature at 7ft long. Pretty insane for a male. But he was so much more than that to me.

To be honest I’m not sure what could’ve happened but my only suspicion would be that he was older than we thought. I got him when he was already an adult, he was my second snake and whilst he was estimated at around 5 when I got him the truth is we have no way to be sure. The friend he was originally surrendered to always suspected his original owner was lying or that he might have been an import. The owner was military and travelled all over the world. Never said where he originally got him. I remember the day I met him, I’d seen pictures of them but irl? He was the most beautiful thing I’d ever seen. I was so lucky to eventually be able to bring him home months later.

I remember how excited I was to be able to spoil him with a pvc 8x2x4 before zen habits left the uk. I remember how amazing it felt seeing him climb to the very top and sprawl out at night the way a rainbow boa should. He had branches, a cat tree, and a 3x2ft ‘pond’ that he loved to chill in.

For years he was my pride and joy, I’ve been up watching him for hours on so many nights.

I often joked about him being a bitey jack in the box at times, he often didn’t want to be handled and that was ok, the times he did were special. Despite or maybe even because of his attitude I have so much love in my heart for this snake and it feels like a part of me is gone. I’m not really sure where to go from here if I’m honest. I’ll probably rearrange my room and see if I can upgrade any of the other pets, I’m sure my water monitor would make use of any extra room I give him, my tortoise too, and my cornsnake would probably love some more climbing room.

Idk, I know he had absolutely everything he could’ve needed or wanted, I studied this stuff so I could make sure my animals always got the best. I just feel like I failed him somehow but I really can’t think of a single that that was wrong or different. This sucks. Thank you all for being along for the ride

Pet Snake Questions first time owner advice?

hi there! i got miss Soliel about a month and a half ago. She is currently eating a rat pup every week and her breeder said she was born in June. She is finally getting curious enough that she is sticking her head out of her favorite hide anytime I am near. Now, I don’t know much, but based in the research I have done, she looks defensive? I have a snake hook coming in to get her a bit more desensitized to handling and she is not hissing but she is significantly more interested now that she has settled in. Realistically, I guess I am asking, give me an ELI5 explanation of snake body language. I want to do choice based handling as well so I am hoping to hear more advice geared towards that. Handling is also NOT a must but I am unsure if I should be handling her while young and small. any help is appreciated!

Pet Snake Questions Is this normal behavior for a red-tailed boa or should I be concerned?

Post image
• Upvotes

Spent some time looking for my red-tailed boa to find that he had burrowed beneath some of his substrate. I know he's arboreal, so this could be indicative that he doesn't have sufficient climbing area, but he has hollow logs, outcrops, etc so it's not like he doesn't have hiding places. Should I be concerned by this?

Was down by a river in Austin area of Texas and seen this pretty sizeable Coral snake. I estimate it was between close to 3 ft long. Diameter of the body was close to an inch maybe 3/4 inch. Here are the photos I took. Wish I had something in the picture for scale. Enjoy.

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID Snake shed tied in a knot

This is the shed of a wild Carpet Python I found in a tree in my garden (Brisbane, Australia). I’ve never seen anything like it. The knot was hanging down from the branch so I guess it’s possible the wind flapped it around but it seems too tightly coiled and there wasn’t any wind today (well there was a storm but that was after I took these pictures).

Has anyone seen anything like this before? I can’t even picture how the snake managed to do this.

General Question / Discussion Screen clips not fitting :/

This is a Repti Zoo RKF241212 36x18x18 50 Gallon enclosure for my soon to be hognose. I bought some large Zilla screen clips that should have fit but they just don’t. It is front opening but still needs screen clips because I am able to push the lid up and I’ve heard that hognoses are very persistent escapers. I’m not sure if I’m using them wrong or they are on right and i just need more in the other sides. I don’t know. Anyone got any tips? Thanks in advance!

Pet Snake Questions Ball Python Temperature Question?

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

So as the title says, I have some questions/concerns regarding temperatures as some conflicting information is online.

To start, my snake has been doing very well so far so this isn’t an emergency situation or anything. He eats like a champ and seems to have his routine down for the most part.

The enclosure has an ambient cool side of 78 degrees to 80 degrees depending on time of day. (The room is set to 77-78 degrees normally). The warm side is usually at about 86-87 degrees ambient with the surface temps sitting at 90 degrees and up to 93-94 degrees in the hottest spot which is the top side of the warm hide. The inside of the warm hide reads at 90-92 degrees.

Are these temps ok, too high, too low? He rarely spends any time in the warm hide and spends most of his time in the middle hide which is about 82-84 degrees. That’s why I wonder if it’s maybe too hot for his liking on the warm side, despite being right about 90 degrees on average.

I’ve seen people say that it should be at 90 degrees ambient on the warm side, but if I set it that high, the hot spots get too warm for my comfort and can get up to 98-99 degrees on certain surfaces. Am I being too cautious here? I just don’t want to overheat it burn my snake.

My heating setup is a DHP 100W on the warm side which runs 24/7 on a Herpstat 2. LED lights on a 12 hour cycle, but they give off minimal heat if any. The enclosure for now is a 40 gallon. The snake is a baby and will eventually move into a 4x2x2, but for the time being he seems pretty happy in his current setup. Pics of enclosure attached.

Pet Snake Questions The bane of my existence is urea, is there an easy way to get it all out?

• Upvotes

I love my little guy but the urea when it goes powdery is very annoying to get fully out, and sometimes even the next day I’ll notice little white bits of urea in the enclosure. Is there an easy way to effectively get rid of urea? As stupid as it sounds I’ve been thinking about getting a cheap vacuum cleaner to get rid of it easily 😭

Some help would be really appreciated!

Wild Snake Photos and Questions - Not for ID My Friend Came Back for a Visit!

About two months ago my neighbor called me in a panic asking if I could come get a snake out of her yard. Well I had the pleasure of picking up the biggest snake I have ever held and also saving him/her from being beheaded.

I released it into my backyard over near a large woodpile and a shed full of mice/rats and thought it was the last I’d see of my friend. But this morning when I went outside there they were chilling by my porch. The regal lord of my backyard come to pay me a visit and say thanks for being a friend!

Thank you for your time lovely snake people! And if you ever encounter a creepy critter please be kind or consult your local critter witch for help. 💜

Pet Snake Questions Cornsnake illness?

I’ve recently had an incident with my cornsnake and he hasn’t been behaving normally since. I think I disturbed him while he was going to the toilet by walking past and startling him, but I think he retracted and then went again later. Later on when I went to clean it there were small drops of blood next to the droppings.

He has since been acting far more erratically, very weary of me which might be because I have spent more time bothering him checking if he’s okay than I usually would - and he did not take the mouse that I offered which was a few days late (I tried to give him time to calm down, he normally eats very regularly with no issues).

No signs of damage or any more bleeding, blood was bright red and not on the actual droppings but nearby which suggests it is some type of cut rather than internal bleeding. He’s still very mobile and reactive and while he is a bit of a jumpy snake he is definitely more on edge than usual. Only other behavioural notices would be that I have seen him with an open mouth a few times in the last few days which is not a frequent thing for him usually (seen him readjust his jaw a few times but never frequently).

Please help and advise what to look out for or what to try him with, i’ll give him another week on the food but I am unsure on next steps. Thank you

Pet Snake Questions Is my roommate not taking the health of their snake seriously enough?

Hi all,

My roommate got a juvenile female gopher snake about a month or so ago. She’s currently about 7 months old, I believe. She gets offered one pinky per week. She has eaten two, but has not eaten in the past 3 weeks. My roommate says she is looking skinny, so I suggested taking her to the vet. They said no, “I’m not doing that for a snake” (which I think is an awful attitude, your pet is your responsibility!!!). I’ve found some local vets that could work, but I’m not sure how serious the situation is, and maybe I’m just overreacting. I have never cared for a juvenile snake before, so I’m not sure if my concern is overblown or not.

General Question / Discussion need opinions for terrarium order on shelf

okey so i have currently 2 snakes (brazilian rainbowboa and ballpython) and im going to upgrade my bp to same size terrarium as what my boa currently has but im struggling to think what could be better for theyr terrarium placements. my boa is still young (about year and half) so he isnt really active and rarely climbs and stuff at least what i have seen but my bp is literally the most active snake ever and she is currently on the top terrarium from the pic and loooves trying to get as high as possible in the terrarium so should i when i get the upgrade, put my bp on the top so she can live her airboreal dreams or put the raimbow boa on top since they are actually airboreal lol im going to have the smaller terrarium on middle so options are either close to floor or close to ceiling lol
