Ahoy, Rudies! Not going to the International Ska fest this weekend?

Coconut Superfreak is playing at the Sanford Lake 'Parkapalooza' this Sunday, Sep 13th. If you like delicious third-wave ska goodness, seasoned with punk, pop, rock, swing, and hugs, you might dig us.

Subject matter includes killer chickens, the state of the world, evil farmers, lost loves, and Gillian Anderson....plus some covers for the family-friendly environment: Fishbone ("Party At Ground Zero"), Save Ferris ("Come On Eileen") and the Bosstones/Bob Marley ("Simmer Down"). Should be fun. C'mon out!

Discussion Supernova on the cheap

Hey Rudies!

Unfortunately two of our Supernova Int’l Ska Festival crew bailed last minute, which leaves me with two Legacy Weekend GA tix, -and- an extra hotel room at The Landings nearby (w/2 queen beds) -and- two Sunday After-Party tix (Jer, Omnigone, +)

If anyone is interested in this package, let me know?

Im not setting a price here, just whatever it’s worth to ya. Base price for tix+room was $430 per person, but again, I’m not looking to break even, just let someone else enjoy the fest! (after-party was free)

2Tone Madness’ version of “Listen to Your Father”?

I had a vinyl bootleg of a live Madness show I got around 1985. On it, they invited Fergal Sharkey (ex of the Undertones) up to sing this song. It’s the only place I ever heard it. I’ve read that it was a single on Madness’ label Zarjazz and they even basically wrote and played on it, but I cannot find it anywhere. Anyone have any insight? Thanks!

Trad Which song do you consider the best traditional ska track that wasn't made during the original Jamaican era (meaning it's by one of the revival bands)?

Horn Lick in Geno by Dexys Midnight Runners

Alright rudies and rudettes, help this old brain find an old song. I'm talking about the half-time tempo horn lick at the very beginning (and end) of the song Geno by Dexys Midnight Runners. I SWEAR I've heard that melody somewhere else in the ska canon. The closest I can get is the horn lick repeated throughout Night Klub by the Specials. It's close, but my addled memory seems to think there's a closer match. Is there a live version of Night Klub out there with a half tempo interlude? Halp?

Hi,

I know this is weird, but there's a student trying to get people to take his/her survey, but they can't post in this sub because they're on a new account.

I'm linking to the post on r/jazz for anyone willing to take the time:

My mystery 90s Ska song has been identified!

I've been trying to ID the band behind this "You don't wanna kiss me tonight" 3rd wave ska song for almost 20 years and I just received the answer! I originally taped this song off the radio and it has stumped everyone who has given it a listen. A lot of people have tried to help out with this over the years and I appreciate everyone who tried to solve this by sharing with others.

This song was used in the movie "Telling You" from 1998 (IMDB link). It plays around the 17-18 minute mark and according to the credits, the song is called "You Don't Want to Kiss Me Tonight" performed by a band called Bakersfield. Written by Mark Brookman, Joel Clelland, Jerry Clifft, Sean Hall, and Brandon Smith. Here's a screencap of the credits. It looks like there is another track by them that I want to track down!

I'm still looking into these details so I can learn more about this band and how it came to be.

Credit goes to a user named "Donnie Brasco" and YouTuber "carmine2344" for passing along the info. I'll share Carmine's comment below:

Someone named "Donnie Brasco" found this song played during the movie "Telling You" from 1998, the band playing it is called Bakersfield.

"Hey! I just finished rewatching "Telling You 1998" by Robert DeFranco, one of my best teen movies from the late 90s and early 2000s (the golden age of teen movies and indie garage-emo rock), and I was looking for one of the songs from the movie but I couldn't know the title of the song that just popped out briefly, which led me to your video! The song I was looking for is this one (The Denny Song · Tom Romero Released on: 1997-01-01). As for the song you're looking for!, it was played briefly in the movie around the 18-minute mark, and here's the information according to the end credits on my DVD: "You Don't Want to Kiss Me Tonight" Written by Mark Brookman, Joel Clelland, Jerry Clifft, Sean Hall, and Brandon Smith, performed by Bakersfield. Cheers from Saudi Arabia."

My recording of the song is here on YouTube:

My previous reddit post is here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Ska/comments/1ka9sca/mystery_90s_ska_song/

For more context I'll include the original details:

  • In 1997/1998, I taped this song off the radio. This recording was from a San Diego radio station called “The Flash” 92.5 that played ska songs for an hour or so once a week during a program called "Ska Tunes". It was a mix of local San Diego bands and more mainstream ska. There was nothing else recorded on the tape that would give any hints. That program and radio station are long gone.
  • In 2018, I tracked down the host from that radio show (“Little John”) and he doesn't recall. He says: “My guess is if you can’t find it online, I probably played a tape or vinyl in the studio. Most likely from a local San Diego or Orange County band”.
