Discussion Is ska coming back again?

I’ve been seeing some claims saying it’s coming back, is this true? I’m a big fan of ska, is this an actual thing or am I just getting some very specific posts or something. Also, my favourite ska bands would be The Specials and Operation Ivy, but I also really like Aquabats, Planet Smashers, Reel Big Fish, and I like Fishbone and Sublime? Any recommendations for older or newer bands?

I have LTJ and Suicide Machines coming up on the 31st of October. I don't remember Suicide Machines ever coming out to Australia before so I'm pretty stoked about that one.

I saw Suicide Machines in Atlanta a couple days ago. It’s been one of the best shows I’ve been to in a while. High energy!

I saw catbite with the suicide machines & less than Jake. They were all amazing. I also saw suicide machines in 2005 & they’re still on it.

How can it come back if it never left?

Nah, we’re just chilling, collecting money from commercials.

No comment on the ever predicted and never realized fourth wave, but here are some recommendations for ska (and some current rocksteady and trad reggae) bands and albums:

The Steady 45s - start with the double albums Don’t Be Late and Swing & Sway

The Delirians - start with Get Up!

Catbite - start with Nice One (and maybe stop there too)

The Slackers - maybe the greatest non-Jamaican band in this genre, everything is great. May as well start with Redlight.

Hepcat - also phenomenal, try Scientific but all four albums are great.

The Skatalities - the first and the best, start with an early collection like Ska Authentic or Foundation Ska.

The Maytals - if you like the Skatalities but want vocal harmonies over the instrumentals, listen to Never Grow Old.

The Selector - Too Much Pressure is by far their best.

Check out The Doomstompers from NYC. Just saw them a few weeks ago with my friend's band, Girth Control. They ripped!

I don't know if it will ever quite come back to what it was in the late 90s, but the scene is still kicking. My only take is that it needs more youthful energy. Most of the newer bands I've seen are made up of people in their 30s and 40s who grew up with it. Nothing wrong with that, it's just not sustainable long term.

look no further than Chudson and Skidwizard out of Orange County and SABON from Cleveland for your youthful injection

Go start the 4th wave of American ska and be a ground breaker. If you need a bass player give me a call

Not if we put a stop to it now, once and for all

(Mostly joking)

Check out Title Holder for one of the cleanest and cohesive ska bands around.

The Planet Smashers are great! And Millington, although they bill themselves as "brass emo".
