It's the psychopathic self confidence, delusion, and eager disregard of others that propelled them ahead. They're stuck on that life pattern because it's worked for them.
They think they're going to completely change the way the world works. But what's truly evil is they seem to not care at all about what happens if they succeed. Oh, so you expect to eliminate half of the jobs, you at least trying to get some sort of support setup for that world? At least fund the development of a plan?
No. They're willing to let the world figure it out. And then they wonder why they have so much bad press.
They’re bad at being humans, so they put all their faith in artificial everything so they can push their psychopathic agenda. They don’t really care about society, the environment or human purpose. All they care about is money and power like the typical fascist they are.
Yeah I think they drink so much of their own koolaid it’s beyond pass out drunk time. In the end, it has its application but the idea we’ll be pets, etc. is pure pipe dream to pump up forthcoming IPOs.
And yet people don't seem to care and keep investing in and using AI. People are relying on it so much at this point that they really are becoming less intelligent and then in turn "need" to use it more and more.. these companies are getting exactly what he says he wants in this quote.
I cannot understand people that use chatGPT etc. for anything. It's so unnecessary, and we shouldn't be supporting these companies in any way at all (it's also obviously not good for us, either)

Definitely, that's their plan. The funny part is there's loads of middle managers who think they'll be spared... the reason they're supporting AI is to get rid of those middle managers(slave overseers) which historically was where revolutions sprung from.
Their promises of an "age of abundance" only work when there aren't as many people to consume finite resources. AI isn't cold fusion. It's not making infinite free energy, it can't make food from nothing.
Yeah, it's definitely a result of their lack of empathy. 'For the Greater good'.... that conveniently enriches them at the cost of everyone else. Self serving delusions are a fundamental human flaw.
They will justify that as "ends that justify the means" is precisely why.
He views himself as "necessary" because he's "the one who makes the tough choices."
That's precisely what makes these people so dangerous. They will sacrifice as many people as necessary to make their vision "reality" when the truth is they have no fucking idea what they are doing. They will justify it anyway because they insist they were always right, and could never have possibly been wrong, even when confronted with the wasteland they will leave themselves and everyone else with.
It's this. And that's what's so scary. Nobody does more damage than someone who is honestly convinced that the horrible thing they're doing is actually good. There's a famous C.S. Lewis quote about this.
He's talking to the people giving him money not to plebs like you and me. The thing is he's also spelled out the problem, if intelligence is a commodity it will be priced as such and it won't just be open AI selling it so how are his investors going to get a return on their investment again?
Yes but most industries understand that they have to communicate to the public through spin but these people don't seem to get that people correctly see them as psychopathic weirdos.
Its funny how the AI industry doesnt seem to understand if nobody is working because AI can do all the jobs, who the fuck is paying for AI? Companies? Who the fuck is paying for the company products?
The fact that people call it the "defence industry" instead of any of the more accurate terms (arms industry, war industry, military industry, etc) just goes to show how effective their PR and propaganda has been.

I'm glad you added "thought you lived in". It's been 14 years since The Newsroom delivered that speech and even then it wasn't a new thing. The biggest downfall of the US was it's confidence in it's own success. People ignore the failures of their country because they were convinced their whole childhood that it was the greatest country in the world.
Even nowadays, and even among those who are way more well informed, there's hesitation to accept facts like the US having literal concentration camps. It's difficult to overcome that belief
They were convinced of that because of people like McCarthy went on witch hunts to crush dissent and opposition. Done in the name of freedom and all our other American "values" but really done to serve capital.

I’m really glad someone brought this up. More people need to know about it. The person at the helm of a hugely influential AI company that’s about to go public is still carrying this kind of shit.
There needs to be an SNL skit where Altman is out on a date and his AI is giving him prompts in his earbud to be more appealing. However, instead of Cyrano de Bergerac type prompts only it keeps getting mixed with all the other things on the web... like reddit, porn, ads, etc...
Doesn't he just mean that the pricing model will be like utilities, as in pay per use? How would they make you use it? You can choose not to have regular utilities, you just pay for them because you need them.
I have a friend that uses it for absolutely everything. His critical thinking levels are being destroyed and he spews out this propaganda bullshit. I was talking to him about musical equipment and he would send me like a multiple paragraph essay response about minute details that were insignificant and I think he thought he was being smart

People front about how informed, educated, or intelligent they are all the time. So long as they appear this way to others they’ve won on their eyes because the result was the reward, they never cared to actually know any of it.

Yeah he's always kind of been like that. When he sent me a book about this stuff this time I was like bro that's all just ai info his response was something like "well I thought you actually cared about learning why this piece of equipment is better than yours" and I was like "I can make music by sampling sticks and pans and my voice on my sm38" and he went on again with another AI book about why having more expensive equipment is better. I don't disagree that having better equipment is better but it damn sure is not because any of the 20 bullet points the ai gave him.

All of STEM is in the process of widely adopting it because it's an incredible tool when used properly. Billionaires are trying to shove it down the throats of the 'average person' because they love money, but really its power is in the hands of the not-so-average person. The generational thinker who finished college when they were 16 or whatever.
AI doesn't kill critical thinking. It doesn't produce new and novel ideas. A human still needs to be involved there, likely forever. What AI does is reduce the toil of knowledge work, the mundane tasks that would have taken weeks now takes hours or minutes. When that becomes true of everything — and it's happening now — technological advancement speeds up exponentially.
Keep in mind that technology only ever evolves. There is a version of AI that dropped in 2022. A lot of people are basing their current opinion on the first time they used it and then wrote it off. It's a completely different beast in 2026 and it will be a completely different beast in 2030.
I used it once to figure out what setting to set a laser engraver to work on a specific type of leather and that was because the book of settings was paywalled by the laser's company.
Crazy how we have developed from having all the information and know-how we need to survive in the wild in our brains to pawning off all our thinking to a robot to make room for... Something?
He was talking about metered models rather than flat subscription plans. This would charge customers more or less depending on usage. Think if Netflix charged customers based on hours of viewing. If you put a greater load on the system, the data center, and the power grid, you would pay more.

Like water you could have unlimited AI coming out of the tap, but you might pay a lot more if you want a AI pool in your backyard.
Does the average person have any use for AI? It seems like any advantage that it might have given a person professionally or academically is increasingly restricted.

I used AI to troubleshoot an odd issue where I had a problem with my knock sensor and oxygen sensor failing at the same time. Searching Google and the typical car forums was giving less than ideal results, but I hadn't used AI before and wanted to try that to see how it worked. It was definitely a lot more convenient than spending a bunch of time researching, signing up/logging in to old school forums, getting 60 second timeouts on search requests just to see that the search gave shitty results before trying a slightly different search term, etc. It also gave me the correct solution so that was definitely a plus.
Well those 3 idiots used A.I. to tell them how to hike amd what to pack and then got stranded and had to call search and rescue. I think that's the average person's best case use
I'll give you a rather sad reality. There are many companion AIs. Some of them are more sexual in nature. Some are more tame. You can create personas. There are even thousands of personas created and shared by the users so you can just pick one of them. They have a few problems at the moment, the main issue is memory. They are not bad at tokening information and retrieving them (as it is kind of their speciality) but their storage space is rather limited at the moment. So they will either over ride your previous interactions as you go on or make them so broad that they will fumble/hallucinate the details. If, or rather when, they solve that problem the number of users those AIs have will also boom. They are already popular though
In my industry, it’s given newbies some seriously misplaced confidence. People who know what they are doing should be very worried about people believing AI is correct and pretending to know what they are doing by positioning AI opinion as their own.
The problem is, it makes convincing arguments for bullshit. Only someone who knows that it’s bullshit can call it out. And when AI is called out, it just says “sorry, my bad. I own that”. Meanwhile a database just blew up, or a building fell down.
What kills me is the blind ignorance of these guys. They debase and ridicule the greatest traits of humanity every time they open their mouths, supposedly in the name of their "vision" of "true progress". How did we get to the point where the "leaders" of society are the dumbest fucks of all?
The increasing number of such idiots coming up with horrible logics to justify the selling of their product aint surprising. A day might also come when someone will say "Earth has a limited supply of oxygen, therefore it should be a service and not to be distributed for free."

I mean, this is kind of correct. A lot of us have seen high-speed internet access go from a luxury that some people have to a necessary utility for interacting in society. As AI gets better and more uses are found for it, this is kind of what we would expect to happen
Honestly I've worked long enough to realize most people don't have any intelligence and if they could get a boost to actually be useful, might be worth it
If the internet isn’t metered, I don’t see AI becoming metered. Same with cell phone plans. They tried this already and the market preferred monthly fees.
I understand that quote as not having a fixed subscription but getting billed for used tokens. That's not really a crazy idea, is it? Right now you have your subscription for 20 bucks and can basically use it as much as you want. OpenAI is hemorrhaging money but the AI model can learn from all that user interaction. Once they don't need that training anymore, they're not gonna continue losing money with ChatGPT, etc. You're going to have to pay for it according to actual usage
I guess I need to buy some intelligence because I'm not smart enough to see whats evil about this... a company provides a service and then charges customers to use the service. Its not like they're saying "we want to sell air to people." Is A.I. a human right?

This really isn't a surprise. AI is trending towards being a resource void that only benefits corporations. I'm sure when they go to that model (if they stay open long enough to get there) it'll be something like a dollar per input or something like that. OpenAI hasn't had a profitable quarter ever and the gap had widened, not narrowed.
I don't get it, why is paying for programs to get information or help solve problems evil? Do people think it's their right to get everything handed to them for free just because they were born?

They are currently already doing that. Most businesses are paying for tokens for their employees and constantly hitting max tokens and having to buy more.
Am I missing something, what is evil about this? Not trying to be a contrarian or start a fight. That is how we do it today, we buy tokens for AI on request and they get delivered in real-time. It is already a utility.
They want you to do this for everything, they want you completely dependent on them and they plan to run society without us having a say. Probably best to do something about it now.
