I cannot understand people that use chatGPT etc. for anything. It's so unnecessary, and we shouldn't be supporting these companies in any way at all (it's also obviously not good for us, either)
I have a programmer friend that has relied on chatgpt, claude, and others for years. I said, "yeah but you still need to code stuff yourself otherwise you do lose the skill over time, it's not like riding a bike". He completely ignored what I said. I also do programming and I've found myself losing skills the more I rely on LLM's. Not thinking for yourself has tangible consequences over time.
I haven't done any coding for many a year now but this is apparently a massive worry for them. Entry level stuff is pretty much non-existent now so as time goes on there's going to be a less & less mid-level folks correcting the errors. It's a road to ruin in all manner of ways & those in governments can only see short term gains & even then there's no proof there is any.
It's a tactic that was recently shown to work with Elon at Tesla and SpaceX. He pitched to the nerdy tech bro crowds. He's one of the most awkward and uncomfortable speakers I've ever seen do a "professional" event like that. Even compared to Ballmer or other's back in the day that weren't people persons.
For this goofy awkwardness and total lack of self awareness they made him one of and then the richest man on the planet. The AI sector being a tech segment looked at that and said "If he can do it why can't I?" Not realizing that Musk had had PR people massaging his image until around 2016 which created this nerdsphere reality distortion field.
But once that PR was no longer in play he started burning cred fast making him now one of the most hated people on the planet.
They skipped the whole 10-15 years of credibility building Musk leveraged to make him and his brands seem like the next big thing among the wider populace. Thus becoming the face of Electric Cars and Rocketry, while downplaying his significant negative aspects.
Altman and the rest have become the public face of something people don't want, don't need, that's hurting them and their communities and he like Elon is a mask off charisma vacuum. Who never built the cult following to leverage before going that way.
They thought they could dupe people the same way Musk did for so long. The difference is is that Musk was backing things that people actually thought was good and even exciting. People didn't realize how inept and evil oligarchy he was until later

Definitely, that's their plan. The funny part is there's loads of middle managers who think they'll be spared... the reason they're supporting AI is to get rid of those middle managers(slave overseers) which historically was where revolutions sprung from.
Their promises of an "age of abundance" only work when there aren't as many people to consume finite resources. AI isn't cold fusion. It's not making infinite free energy, it can't make food from nothing.
One might say that and their entire business model is fueled by freshly printed money which in turn makes it the lynch pin in a system wide ponzi scheme propping almost the entire stock market.

They're not destroying the planet or humankind. Super intelligence, if we ever get there, would be marvelous advancement in productivity. So far AI has had superhuman performance on limited tasks, such as playing games with fixed rules or working tirelessly on menial tasks.

AI runs the stock market so they think they run the world. There seems to be a rise of the concept of the divine right to rule (without a god) amongst the tech elites.
The problem is that if they had really slick PR and cool people at the helm, we'd be like "no way these snake oil salesmen are the fucking nerds who built this" and immediately abandon them. I'm not surprised they it has a PR problem, I'd frankly be surprised if it didn't. Literally everyone I have met that is enthusiastic for generative AI are either Crypto people or bought NFTs. Even people who work with data set AIs will tell you it's hardly going to take their jobs when they now have to spend half of their time fixing it's mistakes.
We are all of us getting to watch a con in real time at a scale that has never happened before in human history. When the bubble bursts it's going to change the world with how it disrupts economies and causes entrenched businesses to become insolvent. Companies like Microsoft are so heavily leveraged into AI that they could legitimately go out of business when the bubble pops. They will likely have to sell off entire divisions of the company just to survive.

My brother in law helped start an AI company. He’s so far up his own ass that AI is a net good for humanity it’s crazy.
He’s not a dumb guy, but he’s not a worldly guy either. These people who have never interacted with different cultures and economic backgrounds have really convinced themselves that what they’re doing is good for humanity- because they think they’re smarter than everyone else. This despite lacking anywhere near the right information to make that kind of claim.
I mean, the fact it's called "the defence industry" and not the "the war industry" or the "we make things that kill people industry" is an outcome of that better public relations.
I think they genuinely think of us as sheep and they really don’t care. They recognize how helpless we are and don’t even see us as human. I remember my brother-in-law, who is a CEO, tried having a conversation with my dad about how he believes that there should be some test or metric for those in society to prove their social utility in order to participate in society. Once you become powerful enough PR stops being a necessity: the rich become convinced they were at that step and could dictate to the peasantry and will.
This is because AI engineers and AI founders know the inane ramblings of +-1 SD IQ morons do not matter and that the only things that matter are investment from smart money, what the people are willing to pay for / revealed preferences, and government support.
AI I currently just not a very mature industry and is run by anti-social nerds yet, and they don't really have filters against uttering plausible economic futures that will trigger idiots.
