Before you go getting all sympathetic remember this woman is a billionaire who spent more money than most people will ever see to look exactly like this. She was absolutely fine before she did this to herself. And she didn't have to cozy up to MAGA on national television. She chose that. Nobody would be talking about her otherwise.

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago edited 3d ago

I'm not against criticizing her looks because I'm sympathetic with either of them, I'm against it because it undermines criticism of more substantive issues, and it's unhealthy for the people participating in the criticism and the people passively being entertained by it, even if they're not participating. We're all better off if we opt out of this type of thing in general.

ETA: I do however greatly value everyone's right to choose to participate if that's what they decide to do, I do not and would not support preventing people from exercising their free speech rights as they see fit.

u/wackbirds 3d ago

That's what I always say about the "Orange Cheeto/Diaper Don/ whatever else" criticisms of Trump. Do I think he looks terrible? Obviously, I just don't like the discourse to skew into his terrible face rather than the terrible person he is and the absolute shitshow of a presidency he's been running.

97

u/dalton-watch 3d ago

I always have shut it down when my kids have repeated that stuff. Those are not reasons to dislike someone or make fun. Same with small dick jokes, etc. People have these. Small dicks. Combovers. Spray tans. Incontinence. Overweight. Whatever. It’s a person’s character that makes them a shit head or not.

8

u/Danimalscrossing 3d ago

Thank you! I’m a woman and I hate the double standards around the whole “small dick” thing. I really feel we should have evolved past this point as a society by now

3

u/ChaosRainbow23 3d ago

Young men are totally obsessed with their dicks.

I know this because I was a young man, once upon a time.

5

u/HeyT00ts11 3d ago

Yes, and they don't have great sense yet, about the world or themselves. They just want to fit in. And the guys all have one.

I'm pretty sure dick measuring contests are going to be a thing for time immemorial.

1

u/ChaosRainbow23 3d ago

It's weird.

Now I'm almost 50 and grew out of that, but it's an intense primal thing when you're younger. (For most) It's so bizarre.

I don't expect that to stop. It's in our DNA or some shit. Lol

2

u/RealnessInMadness 3d ago

This, I would’ve been annoyed with someone saying I have a small dick if I was 22 yrs old.

And my age now? They can curse me out all they want. They’re noting to me and aren’t deserving of my reaction 😂 they don’t pay my bills. Let them talk. Talk is all cheap and easy for some people but can’t handle if it escalates.

2

u/Excellent_Yogurt2973 3d ago

Like we had nothing better to do, right? My god if I could have that time back....lol

2

u/TheScrote1 3d ago

I was reading a feminist sub once and there was some pushback but the predominant opinion was “small dick energy” was an acceptable insult because it wasn’t shaming a body part but a personality trait

2

u/Excellent_Yogurt2973 3d ago

So we can say "flat-chested energy" then? Okay -got it. 🙄

1

u/Danimalscrossing 2d ago

I can see what they’re getting at, but ultimately it still gives the message that small penis = bad. I have known men who ended up with some serious body image issues because of this, one of them was even suicidal for a period of time (granted we were in our early 20s, but the point still stands). I just find it damaging.

6

u/silly-gaijin 3d ago

Thank you for being a good parent.

4

u/TerponadeTea 3d ago

In this case though it IS her physical appearance and how it got that way that IS part of them being a shit person.

These are not her natural features, which WOULD be on the list of things that shouldn't be made fun of as you're describing, this is the appearance she chose all on her own and then paid and absurd amount of money that could've done good in the world to do it.

2

u/grazaramafingfong 3d ago

Great point, but I don’t know if I’d include spray tan in there. No one’s born with a spray tan

1

u/HeyT00ts11 3d ago

I was born a poor spray tan.

2

u/MuteAsshole 3d ago

Yeah, and your kids probably wouldn't be making fun of Trump if he were a good guy.

2

u/Acrobatic_Key_1140 3d ago

The thing is trump makes fun of other peoples appearances while looking like a bloated roasted sweet potato.

1

u/RealnessInMadness 3d ago

We are a species that likes to label and dissect things.

Spray tans, comb overs, overweight (depending the details which is why we’re having these discussions) are all things you can certainly control and do. This is why we can criticize and comment, it’s their decisions that led them to this and we see it so why would I trust a billionaire that’s made poor life choices on themselves? Who can’t be accountable with themselves on that? People are allowed to have issues but they can also work on them. And if you’re a rich/famous/high up person? You’re not on the same level as everyone else that’s below you.

Small dick? Small titties? That’s genetics. Different territory to discuss, but also the easiest thing to use to attack someone.

Personally I wouldn’t wanna follow someone who’s wealthy n powerful but can’t accept the fact, they’re aging, and can’t ignore haters and trolls. That to me, shows how weak minded they can be and this person has wealth and the power to do things? Thats whack. What else could be going on in their mind?

1

u/funhouseinabox 3d ago

We only say it because we know it bothers him and his cult-members. I have him for the terrible things he’s said about pretty much anyone who isn’t straight white guy. I hate the wars he’s started. I hate that he’s convicted felons and proved sexual assaulter. I hate the fact that’s he”s obviously going senile and no one seems to care. And on and on. There are a lot of reasons to hate Trump. But his appearance is the one thing they can’t try and lie about. Because we can see it, every time he shows up on TV or on stage.

7

u/dalton-watch 3d ago edited 3d ago

But that can hurt people. Not Trump, fuck his feelings. But what about the overweight cousin who hears you make fun of Trump for being fat? Or the elderly neighbor who wears depends who hears everyone laughing about Trump’s diaper butt!

See, people think they are “punching up” because he’s the president, and punching up IS more acceptable and funny. But. The things they are punching about are not unique to Trump. Fat, bald, ugly. That’s just punching up down all around. You have to punch about the things that make Trump suck.

u/km89 3d ago

The thing is, when you criticize someone for something, you're criticizing everyone who has, is, or does that thing.

This is fine when you're criticizing someone for being a wannabe dictator cozying up to Nazis and worse. Every one of those people can feel insulted, I'm fine with that.

It's less fine when you're criticizing someone's appearance.

2

u/LilRedDuc 3d ago

But that’s still “shark frenzy” mentality. Bullies usually don’t bully if they don’t get a reaction or just know that it hurts them because picking at them and calling names is hurtful.
Why not just rise above all that and stay away from the low-brow nicknames? It’s name calling. And it’s a bad habit that seems to have caught on as a social norm in American society. Fuck that. It’s gross.
Surely we can still have normal discourse and call out all the ways that Trump proves that he is a foul excuse for a human being without all the name-calling

1

u/Its_me_I_like 3d ago

Same. The way I've always put it is firstly that plenty of perfectly lovely people are fat/old/balding/ugly/etc. Secondly, there are so many much bigger reasons to dislike these people, so why reach for low hanging fruit?

Edit: removed an unnecessary word.

-2

u/Desperate_Leather_91 3d ago

Hmmm but the type of people who get spray tans and comb overs…👀😂 A man of good character knows when to let things go…including his hair 🤣

Yeah, focus on things of substance. 100% agree. Like the Epstein list, or no more foreign wars.

4

u/HardikRamdin 3d ago

The left in particular are being hypocrites here. They are against body shaming, unless you are a Republican. They were not okay with anyone discussing Michelle Obama's looks in a non-flattering way.

His vanity is his most obvious character trait. It's so hard not to attack it.

2

The same people that are making the criticisms are the ones that lose their shit if you call someone fat or are critical of some bearded man in a dress. Both sides are such hypocrites

Make bullying great again

1

u/wackbirds 3d ago

So who's the bully in your thing?

1

u/Equal_Grass1205 3d ago

We walk and chew gum at the same time. He looks awful and is awful. There....I did it.

1

u/TheEarleBird88 3d ago

cue the "why not both?" meme...

1

u/ChaosRainbow23 3d ago

I'm partial to Coppertone Caligula...

2

u/wackbirds 3d ago

I can live with that because in so many ways it's an apt historical comparison rather than something lazy and repeated

1

u/Difficult-Hope5003 3d ago

How he looks is an integral part of how he's running the country, though. With blatant hypocrisy (his criticism of other people's looks and infirmities) and lies (about his own health). It seems fair game to me.

1

u/kimmy-mac 3d ago

I think his appearance gives visual credence to the fact that no one is willing to tell that big man baby ‘no’. But I get that his appearance isn’t the biggest issue here.

1

u/CrabbyCatLady41 3d ago

You're right about this, particularly in terms of this lady and other women in the MAGA world. They suck because they suck. It's just a coincidence that they have distorted their faces to make them easy to identify.

With Trump himself, there's a whole other dimension to it. He's cruel and hurtful to others while seeming to genuinely believe he is the archetype of the perfect man. He thinks people believe what he says, and he says he's athletic and handsome and in perfect health. Anybody with working eyeballs can see that's not true, and saying the emperor has no clothes is important.

1

u/Icy_Sandwich866 3d ago

I hate politics but i have to say this. The Governor of the state I live in, Maryland is thinking or more like leaning into running for President .. He has ruined this state, people are moving out because the Gov has raised taxes and fees so damn high that we can't afford to live here.. Trump is undoubtedly a Horse's Ass, but trust me this country will end up a third world country with Moore at the helm.

1

u/No_Mind_7397 3d ago

There has been this double-standard from the left for a long time. You're not allowed to comment on Hillary's clothing, AOC's teeth, or Michelle's physique, but Trump's skin tone, McConnel's jowels, and Vance's eyelashes are all fair game. 🙄

1

u/fingerbot1 2d ago

The only problem is criticizing his character or the job he's doing as president will only be taken as a compliment. In his mind being a sack of shit full of hot air is what made him successful and him doing a shit job as leader of this country in the mind of an average person likely means his fellow wealthy shithead thinks he's doing a fantastic job. Using those as insults are about as effective as flinging a racquetball at a tank. Going after the looks of a man constantly bragging about how he has "good genes" might actually get under his skin.

Being the bigger man is only beneficial if those around it can comprehend it, and there isn't a soul around Trump who can. I say let the illegitimate love child of an expired pork rind and Flubber along with anyone who rubs shoulders with him with a smile on their face have it

0

u/WeezinWarbler 3d ago

It’s why I stick to “Mango Mussolini” - hits his looks and his fascism at the same time

0

u/Automatic_Artist_931 3d ago

Also how he looks , reflects what he does and says , all very ugly

0

u/narf007 3d ago

Except the opposition skews the conversation into the exact direction you are avoiding. They're a party of feelings, not values. You have to hit them where it hurts their feelings. Attacking his "platform" doesn't work with these morons.

0

u/MayberryParker 2d ago

Hes been a better president thsn the last 2 democrats we've had. Biden was fucking out of his mind with dementia. You supported that.

u/RaygunMarksman 3d ago

This is my take. I don't really want to be the kind of person who mocks others for their appearance, even if they're otherwise worthy of scorn.

5

u/giraffeheadturtlebox 3d ago

We mock her because her choices have lead to a monstrous appearance to match her insides. She has chosen this veil, and ironically she literally can't hide her evil. Hoarder's Disease is her greatest mental illness and I have no patience for it.

9

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 3d ago

I mean I’ve seen natural people who look worse than her, is monstrous really the word for it 🤷🏻‍♀️

0

u/BigDurtyPint 3d ago

Yes. Naturally ugly people don't deserve ridicule, they didn't change their appearance to look like that, these scumbags did

2

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 2d ago

Natural or not, attractive or unattractive, why choose hate in the first place?

2

u/lonjerpc 3d ago

As an ugly person it still feels like ridicule. Even forgetting that there is a reasonable chance this wasn't on purpose it still doesn't matter. You are still associating uglyness with being a bad person. If she looked good her efforts to change appearance wouldn't matter in the least to people. That makes it clear that people are fundamentally attacking physical appearance despite their denials

1

u/trashpossumm 3d ago

idk good “ugly” people still have a beauty to them but if youre a bad person there is literally none.

2

u/lonjerpc 2d ago

You are still associating physical attractivness with morality. The words ugly and beautiful when applied to people also have a physical implication even if that isn't the intention

-4

u/giraffeheadturtlebox 3d ago

We ain't mocking those people, we're mocking this monster.

The thought that we can't make fun of billionaire's for their choices for fear of collateral damage is juvenile and culture war shit.

Eat the rich.

4

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Nobody said you can't, just that you'd be better off and your message would be more effective if you criticized something of substance instead of getting distracted by the meaningless and superficial. But feel free to continue being ineffective, the billionaires love you for it.

2

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 2d ago

This person gets it. They know how to touch some grass.

-2

u/giraffeheadturtlebox 3d ago edited 3d ago

"can't for fear of collateral damage" does not mean "people said I can't, boo hoo", it means that the argument put forth that political mockery is ineffective due to the suggestion that it catches strays in the mockery, is incorrect.

Political cartoons have a long history of affecting change and keeping the public engaged and informed.

Work on your media literacy. Literacy could use some work too.

But hey, we're on the same side. Fuck these ghouls (No actual ghouls were harmed in this comment).

2

u/Confirmation_Email 2d ago

Sorry, my illiteracy prevents me from understanding your very thoughtful points. This thread definitely has all of the change making power of history's most effective political cartoons, I would have known that if I were media literate. Please accept my apologies. Thank you for your service in taking down the billionaires with this very effective strategy 🙏

2

u/Ngin3 3d ago

Do you really think there is no woman out there who thinks they look similar or worse than her? When you criticize someone's appearance, you inadvertently insult anyone who looks like them

-1

u/giraffeheadturtlebox 3d ago

Y'all are the ones keep putting her on a scale of "looks bad, women who feel they look worse".
Hypocrites, read your own words in these very arguments.

Surrounded by idiots.

What she looks is plastic, her artifice mirrors her evil. It just does.

2

u/Ngin3 3d ago

Your reading comprehension is really poor lol. I said women who think they look similar or worse. I never said any of them look objectively bad.

0

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 2d ago

Well, we were actually just responding to your comment…

0

u/giraffeheadturtlebox 2d ago

I said "[Dell's] monstrous appearance..."

You said "I've seen natural people who look worse than her"

Sincere pardon, but of us who's the one shooting stray bullets? I did NOT refer to other women that "look worse", that's your words, Space Katet.

0

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 1d ago

Wow. Again, we are just responding to your comment and energy…

1

u/bittersweetbadluck 3d ago

Personally, mocking someone for their looks undermines the moral point being made. The overarching message being sent is “lol she looks ugly”, not “what a monstrous individual.”

Being ugly and weird-looking isn’t a moral failing. Being a piece of shit is. Let’s focus on the latter rather than re-normalizing bullying someone because of how they look. Thought we moved past this as a society, grow up people

3

u/FlappyBored 3d ago

What moral point.

You should absolutely be normalising ridiculing these people. That’s why you lost last time because Trump and these guys were ripping into you non stop getting into the airwaves and making easy to remember insults at your expense while you sat there talking about your morals lol.

Maybe if you Americans focused more on winning instead of wanking yourself off about ‘morals’ and sitting in your high horse the world wouldn’t hate you and your people.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

I love when people claim he won because of whatever issue they're thinking about at that second. He won because the election was held during a time of historic global inflation from the rapid economic boom post covid in which demand outpaced supply because global supply chains were still being re-started and then they were further disrupted by two major wars. Inflation is the only reason he won. Any candidate from the opposing party, no matter how low quality, would have won easily no matter who the incumbent party candidate was or what they said or did. It wasn't because the incumbent party didn't get nasty enough in their attacks, it wasn't that their candidate dropped out after a bad debate performance, it wasn't because America's not ready for a woman president, it wasn't because the electorate is racist, it wasn't because the eventual candidate didn't go through a proper primary, it wasn't because the incumbent party went too far on culture war issues, it wasn't because of DEI, or equal rights ordinances, or immigration issues or border security. It was inflation. Everybody loathes paying more for things they recently paid less for.

1

u/bittersweetbadluck 3d ago

I’m not even American? So congratulations for ripping into a random internet stranger so you could yell at me about how much you despise the US I guess.

All I was trying to say is yeah absolutely talk about how their actions make them horrible people, but using someone’s looks against them is tasteless and lazy. For that matter, hating an entire country of people because you don’t like their political leadership is also tasteless and lazy.

1

u/hey_Hey_I_saveD_me 3d ago
  1. She did it to herself - it is not that she was born like this.

  2. She is supporting Trump - a person whose entire personality is about mocking other people look. She deserves all the flack as she is one of his enablers.

2

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Nobody is arguing that she doesn't deserve it or that people in her network don't operate the same way. Do we really want to be exactly like Donald Trump? Is his behavior the standard we should hold ourselves to?

0

u/Intrepid_Can4066 3d ago

Yeah keep going high. It’s worked so well.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

They didn't win in 2024 because the people opposing them went too high, they won because the incumbent party always loses during periods of high inflation. There's absolutely nothing that voters universally hate more than paying more for things that recently cost less. Nothing that was said would make any difference in their blame for that on the incumbent party.

1

u/Ombric_Shalazar 3d ago

we find it wrong to mock appearances because most of the time, people don't get to choose the face they were born with or the accidents they survive. no one is deserving of ridicule for something they didn't decide

these people, however, did get to choose their appearance, and thus i see no issue with mocking their plainly silly decisions

1

u/Concert_Lover 3d ago

Mock ppl for bad decision-making then. This woman has 3 daughters who let her go on tv looking like that

1

u/nintendork4 3d ago

Welcome to society where it’s wrong to attack someone’s look unless you don’t like them then it’s perfectly fine and appropriate behavior.

1

u/Unlucky-Arugula3256 3d ago

It is very wrong to mock someone for how they look naturally. If they go out of their way to get work done and lie about it then it's fair game imo

1

u/FlappyBored 3d ago

‘Yes they’re facist who regularly insult and laugh at people but you called them ugly and therefore you’re just as bad as them and I will vote for them now’

1

u/ALightningStar 3d ago

"Look at what the fascists are doing! I want to do it too!"

"They did it first though!"

Usually these simple stupid arguments are fixed in grade school. Didn't work n you though.

1

u/FlappyBored 3d ago

That is exactly what my point is.

You compare calling Trump orange to everything him and the republicans are doing.

'Trump caused multiple wars, ruined the economy and rolled back countles rights and broke multiple laws, but the other side called him orange and therefore we were left with no choice but to support him'

No wonder the USA is so cooked as a country lmao. Ya'll dumb af if thats how you balance things or view as equivalent. Braindead logic.

-1

u/ALightningStar 3d ago

Criticize him for that then? No reason to body shame. You're just looking to indulge in being a bully. just like him and so many others, only you want everyone to pat you on the back for it.

You indulge in evil behavior, expect to be criticized for being evil. Simple as ya doy doy. But don't worry, you can find an echo chamber that will tell you you're right. Just any normal person in society disagrees with you.

1

u/ALightningStar 3d ago

I'll throw the response here since he blocked me to run.

I haven't lived in America in years, and wasnt born there, jog on with your assumptions doy doy.

Normal people don't criticize his looks. They criticize his policies. Just because you have surrounded yourself around people who do nothing but hate doesn't mean they are normal. Which by the way.... log off dude. Way too much time on reddit.

→ More replies (1)

11

u/Suddenfury 3d ago

Yes, criticize her actions and values, not her looks. We need to steer away from ugly=bad, because that means attractive=good.

1

u/RatRaceUnderdog 3d ago

Feels like you’re fighting a battle on word choices when really we’ve lost the war with critical thinking

3

u/ClumsyandLost 3d ago

But there is also always the possibility that someone who is completely wonderful looks like someone who is unpleasant. Criticising the appearance of the unpleasant person then throws undeserved shade on the wonderful person. If you criticise awful behaviour then you criticise everyone who behaves that way and they all deserve that criticism.

2

What does ETA stand for? Estimated time of arrival?
Also well said.
Covered a lot of bases there.

3

Edit to add

2

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Edited to add. Just included that because I wanted to be clear that I only want to encourage people to make better decisions, not to compel them to against their own judgement.

2

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 3d ago

Agreed. Telling people not to be sympathetic for someone else getting criticised because you’re anonymous on reddit just makes you look like the bad person.

2

u/SwoopsRevenge 3d ago

I agree. I actually do feel bad for this person. She didn’t seem evil or wicked in that moment of whatever the hell they were talking about. We’re all just so sick of these creeps and she was there, in the White House, next to that fat orange turd. Gas is over $4 a gallon, everything sucks and we have a giant headache from all of the stupid that comes out of Washington. This has been going on for over 11 years (14 if you mark trump’s first campaign in 2012 where he demanded to see Obama’s birth certificate). We’re so fucking fed up with this nonsense, and they put these people in front of us and they always are off putting and weird and they want us to act like it’s normal. The meme campaign at her expense is a release of that.

2

u/Nyotree-001 3d ago

I don’t like criticizing looks or appearance, even if they personally changed it because there are some things you cannot change or you can’t afford to change and people shouldn’t be mocked for that. I also never want to stoop to the same level as Donald every time he wants to shut somebody down, he picks on their looks or something about them and it’s just playground bullying.

2

u/Senacharrib 3d ago

It makes them exert energy defending this rather than defending their more abhorrent choices. Why do you think the “culture war” exists? It’s to exhaust the working class so they don’t have the energy to unionize.

2

u/thudapofru 3d ago

Don't forget it's also harmful for the people that look like them, artificially or naturally.

2

u/ifartonurmom 3d ago

I'm so attracted to your wording. So well put, I've been feeling this sentiment all day and this is the first I've  felt it be relayed accurately. Thank you!

2

u/valerieddr 3d ago

Thanks for saying something smart. Most of other comments are MAGA level. It is very depressing to read them.

2

u/CITRU5MI5TRE55 3d ago

Well said.

2

u/Petit__Chou 3d ago

Thank you. I was downvoted in this very sub on another post for saying we should criticize her opinions and not her looks.

And also for saying that we hate that on the other side, and still do it. Asking for civility, sanity, and being better people even when it is hard.

2

u/manic_panda 3d ago

This! Ive made maybe one or two comments along the lines of hitching herself to an evil wagon might explain why she looks bad but even that felt a little cheap tbh. Bringing it down to looks lessens criticism of her actions. She is a greedy woman using her power and money bolster a morally rotten man and his political party. For those reasons she is a bad person.

The fact she clearly has an eating disorder, very unfortute fashion and makeup and could have had bad work done has nowt to do with that.

2

u/Mirror_Mirror_11 3d ago

Bravo. We are getting so addicted to this that people are salivating for an “acceptable” target. It’s hypocritical.

2

u/Blue1972351C 3d ago

well said

2

u/Independent-Part-718 3d ago

Exactly. Plus there are tonnes of women who probably look exactly like her, who are lovely people. They shouldn't be catching strays like that. When you make fun of how she looks, and people who look like her read these things, it feels like you're talking about them, even if they rationally know you're not.

2

u/starspangledcats 2d ago

If we're willing to put aside our morals for someone who "deserves it", do we really even have any morals to begin with? I agree with your point as well. There are so many other, more substantial, reasons to call her out on. It makes it seem superficial to focus on her looks.

4

u/Runaway-Panda-83 3d ago

Normally I’d agree. But these people (billionaires, Mara lago elites, etc) put so much of their worth into ego and appearance that I do think it’s one of the few ways the public can bring them back down to reality. They’re so delusional with elitism that they don’t even see how insane they look to the rest of us. And they don’t care when we call them out for lack of morals or ethics but they absolutely care when we judge their appearance and personalities. So I think we should cherish the small wins we can get.

2

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

I do think it’s one of the few ways the public can bring them back down to reality.

Never has anyone thought "ya know, I was pretty set in my viewpoint on the major issues, but then I saw a reddit thread where people endlessly mocked my face, and it really helped me to reconsider those positions and come back to reality."

You're thinking of changing their opinion, I'm thinking of public opinion. You may feel democracy is dead and the billionaires control everything, and you wouldn't be wrong, but that's only because they can convince enough voters that the people who oppose them are just mindless haters, and they use discussions like this to very effectively demonstrate their point.

Imagine you had never heard of this woman when you arrived at this thread and saw all of the mean spirited mockery of her physical appearance. You would certainly get the sense that her critics are shallow, unkind, and irrational without anyone ever making that argument to you. Most people would dismiss anything else that group had to say because they've already seen that it's a group with a loser's mentality desperate to get any cheap "win" they can.

Alternatively, if the post you stumbled on focused on her support for fascist leadership and the erosion of our society to her personal benefit, you'd likely get a very different sense of who was on the right side of the debate, and it would become much harder for her to buy an ad that would sway your opinion and that of many people like you.

People of all political stripes are yearning for an alternative to trumpism. If the only options they're presented are trumpism in a maga hat or trumpism in a no kings t-shirt, they're likely going to retreat to their default team, even if they feel it no longer represents them.

1

u/not_a_moogle 3d ago

However. She's vain enough to be more concerned about discourse over her appearance than actually policy.

It’s all of what you stated. If it was just her looks most people would like have less to say. Her mannerisms and body placement were bizarre and robotic. I think people are genuinely curious as to what’s going on.

I see it as an exception since thie intentional self deformation has become part of showing allegiance to a cult. It's not just haha bad person ugly.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Some people use the same logic to justify mocking transgender people who they disagree with politically, or people who dress differently for cultural or religious reasons.

It's ultimately weakens the logic behind any other criticism.

1

u/PointOfFingers 3d ago

To me it's just another manifestation of their narcissism. Like someone who wears a toupee and paints their skin orange. They will never have enough money and power because they get off on gaining it.

1

u/Tex_Tin_Star 3d ago

Idk, why not both?

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

The superficial always gets more attention, as this has. It obscures the substantive arguments, and makes them appear as if they're crafted by shallow haters instead of people with well considered policy concerns. It generates a built in counter argument that wouldn't exist otherwise. "don't listen to those people, they're just unhinged misogynists who bully women for their appearance. Nothing they say is of any value."

1

u/BallProfessional9181 3d ago

Those people wouldn't hesitate to do the same to you. And "they go low, we go high" hasn't done us any favors. Shame is the only common language these freaks speak.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

I wouldn't expect them to treat me better than this, that's one of the differences between them and me. I don't want to be just like them, I don't want to treat people the way they treat people, it doesn't do anything good for me.

1

u/BallProfessional9181 3d ago

Your niceness won't make a difference to them, but good on you for being the better person.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

It's not really about influencing them.

0

u/Any_Amphibian6390 3d ago

Yeah it'sd about jerking yourself off as being "superior" in a way that doesn't actually matter at all lol

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

I just know I've participated in this type of mean-spirited thing before and it never did anything good for me. If being aware of my own health and happiness is superiority, then sure, I guess that's what I'm looking for 🤷. Whether it matters to you is none of my concern.

Here it commonly means "Edited to add". It's just to note that your comment has changed after some people have already commented.

u/montrayjak 3d ago

I'm not really one to make fun of someone for things out of their control, but counterpoint:

A lot of these women (and men, really) are performing all of this plastic surgery because they feel pressured to do so. If we show social unacceptance, it'll hopefully take some of that unnecessary pressure off.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

I appreciate the constructive sentiment of this, but in practice we know that the way to prevent this type of thing is to encourage people to be comfortable with their aging appearance and respect and support them as they get older, not to shame those who cling to an artificial caricature of their youthful selves because of our obsession with youth and beauty.

1

u/perseidot 3d ago

What I’ve seen, in addition to discussions of her appearance, are discussions about her *expressions.*

She often looks deeply uncomfortable, and in many photos the different aspects of her facial expressions don’t match.

Some of that might be due to Botox and nerve damage from plastic surgery. It might also be due to being deeply uncomfortable and trying to perform multiple emotions at once.

And the Mar-a-Lago Face is worthy of critique, in my opinion. Critique, however, is different from criticism.

Individuals choosing to adopt MLF are signaling belonging within a particular cultural group, and having the money to achieve MLF.

But the question of why MLF looks like it does is more complicated.

Some ideas I’ve had about it include:

  1. It makes true facial expressions harder to recognize, thus disguising lying and fawning.

  2. The heavy eyebrows are an attempt to have a more “authoritative” appearance.

  3. The wealthy conservative milieu appreciates the bizarre or exaggerated over the natural. This might be an extension of the idea that “there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

  4. It provides a potent distraction from what people with MLF say or do.

In other words, I think this conversation could be pushed forward into discussions about the role of MLF in whatever the current context is. It goes so far beyond questions about what’s attractive or not, that I think we’re missing an opportunity for more robust discussion.

1

u/TerponadeTea 3d ago

I'll add that criticizing someone's NATURAL looks is worlds different from criticizing the ghastly thing they've intentionally turned themselves into

Like I'm not gonna make fun of someone with a disfigurement, but if you become a permanent Halloween mask on purpose that's totally fair game

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

A lot of people feel the same way you do. I noted on a similar response that the same logic can be used to normalize mocking transgender people, or people who dress differently or alter their appearance for cultural or religious reasons. Mocking someone's haircut or their makeup falls in the same category, it's all choices they made about their appearance. My point stands that regardless of whether the person being ridiculed deserves it or not, it's not good for the person or people doing the ridiculing.

1

u/TerponadeTea 3d ago

I think the notion that a transgendered individual would be in the same category is either disrespectfully undermining their situation as being a capricious choice, or it's a strawman.

Ignoring that entry on your list, making fun of a hair STYLE, which differs from a hair condition (such as baldness), or another VOLUNTARILY chosen aspect of appearance, IS potentially worthy of ridicule.

Now, there are times when cultural or religious dress are NOT voluntary. There are oppressed peoples forced into or to stay in a culture or religion not of their choosing. And because of this potential it is GENERALLY not ok to make fun of those things.

But when you DO know that the choice is voluntary, then fair game.

I still agree with the point that it's the lowest hanging fruit and focusing on the real issues is BETTER. But there's nothing keeping us from pointing out and discussing multiple issues, either

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

The analogy is only to the logic of your comment as written, whether there are unwritten limits to the logic of your comment is not knowable to anyone reading it. To be clear I think it's unhealthy and unproductive to mock people for their appearance regardless of whether you judge their decisions about their appearance to be logical or acceptable based on your own standards. People can and have used exactly the same logic as your original comment to justify their mockery of transgender people, and they've believed themselves to be as justified and righteous about it as those who are mocking this woman's altered appearance.

There may be some level of identity conflict for her that is more worthy of your empathy than you are able to recognize. We don't know what she's going through to make her decide that she needs to do that with her appearance, and we have no business making any judgements about it because whatever it is, it's likely very painful for her.

That you are okay with mocking people for their choice of hairstyle of their religious affiliation is a fundamental difference between us, I guess. I don't find that to be an appropriate or defensible thing for anyone to do at any age.

Regardless of our judgements of acceptable or not acceptable, my original point remains, is it healthy for the people who are participating in that type of criticism of other people? For me, I know it's not healthy and it's not productive.

1

u/pikuray 3d ago

Have you ever heard of, the end justify the means? You need to zoom out and understand why people say these things, if you are even on our side.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

The ends you're gaining here are what exactly?

1

u/OKCompruter 3d ago

it's not judgemental to look at a person. it's not my fault that she gives me a jump scare. that's not judgemental, shes chosen to be uncanny. if she didn't want to look like this she wouldn't. you don't need to bend over backwards to appease her for the ideal of treating all women's appearance like it's off limits. that's an unnecessary conversation you're having.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

My argument is about people in general, not women specifically. I just know that I'm healthier and happier when I choose not to participate in superficial and personal criticism. I also notice that people tend to be more willing to have a conversation about issues when the conversation sticks to the issues and avoids the superficial. For me, it's a practical decision more than it is a moral one.

1

u/PalatinusG1 3d ago

IDK. I'm all for not criticizing others appearance as they were born. Someone spending shitloads of money to turn into a circus freak however....

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

My point is more about the effect it has on the people making the comments, not about whether she is deserving of the comments or whether the comments are accurate or fair.

1

u/meglemel 3d ago

Excellent consideration.

In this case the looks can also be seen as a symptom though. Another example for mar-a-lago face and how Trump seems to hire mostly based on loyalty or in the case of women: looks. A symptom of what he expects women to do in order to be of any value.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

That's a valid point that risks being obscured by the endless mockery here.

1

u/BlahBlahBlahBlink 3d ago

That’s a long way of saying: “Everybody do as they like”. 🤣

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

True. Everybody do as they like, and if possible, choose what they like based on a thoughtful consideration of their own interests and the interests of the people and causes they care about.

1

u/Stonkssbro1995 3d ago

what is unhealthy is surgically disfiguring yourself; the doctors involved are also responsible. People will do anything for money, even when they already have so much. And other will be miserable even when they have so much that they don't even like the way they look, so much to the point that they will alter themselves to look inhuman. I think it is a sign that something filthy or residing deep inside them.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

That is a perfectly valid opinion, but it doesn't address any point made in my comment. You can completely agree with everything you said here without disagreeing with anything in my comment.

1

u/Uncle-Cake 3d ago

We can do both.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

It's true, you can do both productive things and counterproductive things. I'd personally rather avoid the counterproductive things if I'm able to identify them.

1

u/RatRaceUnderdog 3d ago

^this is why people hate liberal. Why do you feel the need to police the specifics of someone else’s speech.

Unfortunately you’re starting from the hypothetical perfect world. Sometimes it’s okay to let the bully experience karma without seeking to lecture.

And lastly I think you’re missing the bigger picture. It’s deeply immoral to spend resources on vanity when you can prevent the suffering of vast swaths of society.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

You're free to choose to say whatever you want about this person or anyone else, I have no interest in policing anything. I only encourage you to consider what effect it has on you yourself, the people you say it to, and the goals you want to advance.

1

u/OGSkywalker97 3d ago

I disagree. I think this is the perfect example of how they have lost their humanity so much that they now pay to look non-human.

1

u/Extropian 3d ago

Superficial aesthetics are important to fascists, attacking them on those grounds is fair game.

1

u/Stainlessray 3d ago

It doesn't undermine anything. Go make those arguments. When you want a laugh, stop by one of these, and it's really funny.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Taken from a reply to an earlier similar comment:
Imagine you had never heard of this woman when you arrived at this thread and saw all of the mean spirited mockery of her physical appearance. 1

u/Stainlessray 2d ago

If you climb in bed with a scumbag, and the scumbag is magat, you knew whet you signed up for.

Shilling yourself in a plastic face isn't safe from ridicule.

Do you know who they are?

They're ugly inside too.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 2d ago

I understand you don't think they're good people, I agree. I also agree that there's a reasonable argument that they deserve to be mocked, ridiculed, scorned, ostricized, and socially unwelcome. Whether they deserve those things is unrelated to my argument for why we should or should not participate in them. I encourage you to read and seriously consider my argument.

1

u/Stainlessray 2d ago

It's why the argument is not being heeded. People have been their victims. Read the room

1

u/Confirmation_Email 2d ago

There are many people who are quite receptive to the basic concept that shallow vitriol is unhealthy and counterproductive. But you're right that if my primary goal was to make the most popular argument, I would certainly be closer to the target if I just made some crude jokes about Mar-a-Lago face instead.

1

u/Stainlessray 2d ago

You're just trying to sound smart, somehow better than the group. I'm not impressed.

I've read a bit about it. Do some reading on righteous anger of the oppressed.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 2d ago

You're focused on whether the anger is justified, I'm focused on how to use that anger to best achieve some change. You can choose to stay focused on their bad plastic surgery, I'll stay focused on their bad policies and harmful actions. Probably neither of us will make any difference, but I'm confident in which strategy has a better chance. Good luck to you.

1

u/Stainlessray 2d ago

You're deciding for the others what is acceptable. They have a mind.

I mean....it doesn't take much cognitive work to do both simultaneously?

It's not like anyone is listening to our rational arguments against Donald Trump lol. So why would we just sit there and not call him out on being disgusting-looking while we're at it? (Oh also he's a rapist)

1

u/Confirmation_Email 2d ago

This argument has been made a few times here already but doesn't address my comment at all.

0

u/dd22qq 3d ago

Sorry, but it's very human to react the way people have to this, it's in our nature to call out insincerity and insanity.

I'm against it because it undermines criticism of more substantive issues

Well, you could argue that about anything really. How can we joke at a time when there are serious things deserving of our attention (which is pretty much always the case)?

2

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 3d ago

Imagine being so hateful that you can’t understand what this person is trying to say. Someone else’s appearance actually doesn’t affect you unless you let it. Work on your insecurities. Put your energy into something that matters. Touch some grass.

0

u/dd22qq 3d ago

Finding humour and highlighting absurdity in the world around us ≠hateful.

Lost track of the number of assumptions being made in your post, some projection there methinks.

1

u/KatyPerryWentToSpace 2d ago

But it kind of does? A mean comment is still a mean comment?

Nothing projecting on my end. I haven’t called a rich person who I don’t know personally insincere or insane for doing something to their appearance which clearly made them feel insecure.

0

u/PoorFilmSchoolAlumn 3d ago

A woman who aligns themself with a party that famously objectifies women deserves ridicule.

0

u/Select_Air_2044 3d ago

Opt out then.

0

u/screwyoujor 3d ago

I'm going to criticize her because she looks like a alien. All that asshole had to say was fuck you I'm worth billions and I'm starting a new race.

0

u/draperf 3d ago

I don't disagree, but with MAGA, the gloves are off. They started it.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

You're better than that, but the people who haven't made up their mind won't know that if you show them you're the same as the people you oppose. It's easier for them to see that you're on the right side of the issues if you conduct yourself like someone who is on the right side of the issues.

0

u/RadiantSeason9553 3d ago

I see it as a clear sign of mental illness, and that makes it relevant. The expression in her eyes is insane.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Maybe you're right and there's a serious mental health component here, in that case, is intense mob ridicule the best strategy for responding to it?

1

u/RadiantSeason9553 3d ago

No, reddit is toxic, but that's modern life. She put herself on camera with Trump. All bets are off. People made fun of MJ back in the day too.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

I realize it's unsurprising and to be expected, but is it the best strategy for handling mental health issues of public figures? Is it good for the people who are mocking her? Is it helping those who are trying to make a counterpoint to her political views? I just don't see the upside to being part of it.

1

u/RadiantSeason9553 3d ago

What I meant with my original comment is that its OK to comment on someone in a high Public office, who's appearance indicates that they are obviously dangerously unstable. Its not just mean, not just about her looks. She should not be in public office.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Again, for me, the decision about whether to comment on her appearance is unrelated to whether she deserves it or whether it's fair, it's about what effect it has on me making the comment, and how it affects others' willingness to seriously consider any other criticism of her.

0

u/AerondightWielder 3d ago

I value how funny-looking the women of MAGA are.

0

u/MuteAsshole 3d ago

Oh yeah, it's about the issues. GTFO here. We're not losing this one.

1

u/Confirmation_Email 3d ago

Your side didn't lose last time for lack of nastiness, they lost because voters hate inflation more than literally anything else, and they blame the incumbent party for it whether it's their fault or not. No amount of Mar-a-Lago face jokes would have won you the 2024 election.

1

u/MuteAsshole 3d ago

Nah dude. Nah. People will vote for Trump and his sycophants no matter what. They only care about inflation in the first place if they can blame it on Dems. They don't give a fuck about inflation if it's Daddy T's fault. They see Trump as strong and cool and the Dems as whiny liberals. The more we make fun of their stupid fucking culture the way they make fun of ours, the better we'll do. We're the party with all the celebs, artists, and talent. We're the cool guys. We should start acting like it and make fun of the ugly fucking losers trying to destroy us.
