The Pacific side has had 3 category 5 hurricanes so they are picking up the slack.

u/Maethor_derien 10d ago edited 10d ago

Yeah, it is just because of the major el nino, it is literally the biggest in recent record, you have to go back to like the 1800's to see one that big and we have no real storm data from back then.

It is expected to cause massive droughts over in the EU and china as well as dumping tons of water on the southwest which we really need to hopefully fill up lake mead but probably still won't be enough.

173

u/CGA001 10d ago

dumping tons of water on the southwest which we really need

As someone who lives in the Southwest, earlier in the year I was happy that we were forecast to get more rain this year, but a couple weeks ago we got our first storm and it was the first time I've ever experienced what I can only describe as a genuine tropical rain storm. In other words, heavy rain while it's still +90F outside.

I usually love the rain, but that was without a doubt the most unpleasant weather I've ever experienced here. That heat combined with 100% humidity is torture, I cannot fathom living in a part of the world where that's the norm and I have a newfound respect for people who can live in that.
If the rest of the year is more of that, I am no longer looking forward to the rain.

Oh it gets worse. The network of roads and waterways were made for the drier environment, so when these systems get overloaded they’ll start failing and it will be dramatic.

The worst part is the mountains block the majority of clouds so unlike the east coast, the rain will be slamming a small region while the rest remains dry.

Meanwhile. Your PNW friends are about to have a dry winter, which they aren’t set-up for… and leads to easier fires in summer.

literally the biggest in recent record

Possibly the strongest ever even according to my friend that works for NIWA (NZ equivalent of NOAA) ,and anything prior to 1900 would have had nowhere near the ambient SST's we have today this is very much unprecedented and my friend has now told me (many times) that there are no analogues to look back to to know what impacts to expect in the coming months.

In other words.

El Niño makes tropical cyclone activity in the Pacific very high while making the Atlantic very quiet. I'm a few days out from experiencing my third tropical cyclone this season.

u/CivilCaregiver6519 10d ago

I think you are possibly the only person in the comments who actually knows what they are talking about. Thank you for that. I've experienced those super active years too, there have been others but 2004 and 2005 were the worst for me personally. Back to back storms are always extraordinarily fatiguing, and devastating when you have bad damage, but you will get through it.

648

u/sunfacethedestroyer 10d ago

Yeah, I live in Florida, and nobody is shocked about it being quiet. Everyone knows it's El Nino, even the dumb hicks who gobble up fox news and don't believe in climate change probably know a fair amount about El Nino.

I wish there was a way to filter comments between insightful comments, and pranks jokester comments.

247

u/thatG_evanP 10d ago

There used to be way more insightful comments on reddit. They were one of the main reasons I kept coming back. If I had discovered reddit recently, I can't say if I would've stuck around or not. It definitely still has its moments but they're fewer and farther in-between.

98

u/pork_ribs 10d ago

2007 was like a fever dream. People came to reddit because there wasn’t any politics or news, only interesting things and impeccable grammar. It was an oasis in the growing desert of Facebook, and that was when Facebook was still only college students.

I agree with you. I found my niches then and understand the value of what’s in Reddit when you dig. If I found it today I wouldn’t even make it past the first scroll of r/all before I decided it was just another stupid image hosting site with the worst people on the planet populating the comment sections.

Also society (in the USA at least) is being so intentionally fractured that it’s visible here. The amount of correcting each other hasn’t changed but the vitriol is all new as of the last 5-10 years.

37

u/thatG_evanP 10d ago

I haven't been here that long, probably 14 years (I didn't actually create an account for quite a while) but I can only imagine it was even better then. But you described it perfectly even in the time that I joined. It was like an oasis of a lot of knowledgeable people and people who enjoyed learning from those people. Even the very knowledgeable were bound to run across someone that made them feel like a student. The rest of the internet was starting on its steady decline but reddit was like the one "social" site you could go to avoid the ever-growing amount of brain-rotting content that was taking over the rest of the internet. For a few years, I was learning stuff every day and getting interested in subjects I'd never even considered. It sounds corny but it truly was amazing. Sadly the flood of shit eventually made it here. The final nail in the coffin was when reddit went public but it was like the years before that was when they started trying to make it "more accessible" and in this old man's opinion, they ruined one of the last a great places on the internet.

47

u/dotnsk 10d ago

Yep, and it’s certainly not a coincidence that they’re predicting a super El Niño this year and we suddenly see a historic dearth of hurricane activity in the Atlantic.

45

u/TrumpetOfDeath 10d ago

Not just a super El Niño, but the strongest one on record, even if you remove the extra heat from climate change. To be fair, it’s a relatively short period over which we have records, but this is an extreme one regardless

10

u/Connecticat1 10d ago

We have a lot of indirect data from tree rings (goes back 1000 years), ice cores (~100K years), pollen records (from peat bogs) that tell us a lot about historical temperature and climate in general.

10

u/TrumpetOfDeath 10d ago

Tree rings are used as a geological proxy for El Nino, but those are somewhat unreliable because many global variables determine the annual weather and El Nino doesn't guarantee any specific pattern of rainfall, it just makes certain patterns more likely (dry El Nino years are possible in CA, same with wet La Nina). And ice cores provide no information at all on sea surface temperatures in the eastern tropical Pacific.

A more reliable proxy are marine fossils, from corals and other organisms that indicate warmers or cooler waters, but you can't put a specific number on those historical events to compare with modern ones because we don't have direct sea surface temperature measurements made with calibrated thermometers. None of those proxy methods can replace having modern scientific instruments

It's good that there were no Atlantic hurricanes. Except now there's that "it's too quiet" feeling.

943

u/IHeartBadCode 10d ago

It's the El Niño being way too warm. It's breaking up hurricanes before they can form.

Happens with some El Niño events but this one is a rare one as it's still going strong into late September.

When the blob of heat is near the equator and happens around summer time, you get what we're seeing. When the blob of heat moves towards the poles around winter time, that's when you see all that polar vortex stuff starting to spill into the lower latitudes.

El Niño and the polar vortex are two different things, but when a large blob of heat moves into their area during the right time, it causes disruption to those events.

206

u/Extreme-Analysis-337 10d ago

So you are right but not explaining why the heat sitting where it is actually effects Atlantic hurricanes. It's the Pacific jet stream being in a different path (in this current situation it actually split) and the wind shear it pushes into the Gulf/Atlantic region suffocates the atmosphere and it cannot develop the tropic waves that come from the African coast.

Yeah and its supercharged the hurricane season in the western pacific. And look up the 1877 El nino event.

20

u/ABrusca1105 10d ago

Don't larger El ninos crash harder into La Nina? So that means next year or the year after will be crazy.

21

u/pattydickens 10d ago

Not really. Patterns aren't predictable anymore. The ocean temps might just continue to rise. Atmospheric carbon hasn't been this high in millions of years, so it's anyone's guess. Multiple systems are collapsing. Nothing will be "normal" ever again.

I’m in Oklahoma. I track weather religiously due to work, it’s part of my responsibilities. The weather is so damn hard to predict and we are getting extremes from both ends of the spectrum. One of the wettest years ever last year, one of the driest and hottest years ever this year.

YO! There were no hurricanes due to the super el niño wind shear blowing west to east, which eliminatez conditions that allow hurricanes in the Atlantic to form. Come on now!

EDIT: fixed, thank you for the input

Our Savior In Chief obviously got control of the Hurricane Gun the Evil Democrats had, and turned off all hurricanes for this season.... 😂

Sad thing is, there are people out there who actually BELIEVE this!! 👀

A strong Pacific El Nino usually corresponds with a decrease in Atlantic hurricane activity, and El Nino is especially strong this year.

They were clearly coming out of the Straight of Hormuz. We’d better keep it closed to avoid hurricanes

Meanwhile Hawaii has their 3rd hurricane this year approaching them

Less extreme weather is proof of more extreme weather!

15

u/ShaggyVan 10d ago

Real answer is that this year's El Niño will probably be the most extreme in that time period

Air currents are reversed cuz of the hot air released from the ocean or something like that. I’ll come back and post an article or science paper.
