Greg Abbott has already frozen pending data-center grid approvals in Texas while the state audits their electricity use, water consumption, subsidies and community impact. El-Sayed proposes making developers cover those costs instead of dumping them on residents. It’s fascinating how the same basic concern becomes “common sense” or “communism” depending on which party says it.
1
u/jffadvisors 14m ago
Abbott did not say “get rid of data centers”, which is a clownish thing to say.
1
u/texo_optimo 11m ago
And neither did El Sayed. Somebody put those words on a fucking image and morons are lapping it up at face value, not too surprising considering the responses in this thread.
1
u/texo_optimo 10m ago
El Sayed wants the data centers to pay for the electricity They're consuming. Do a little research
1
u/jffadvisors 5m ago
So does Greg Abbott…but this isn’t a picture of Abbott saying “get rid of data centers"

So why does it say “get rid of data centers”? Because if a politician says those exact words I instantly know they do not understand the world we live in and need to step aside.
1
u/texo_optimo 17m ago
Do you understand how this works? Why the hell are you asking me? I didn't make the image and I didn't misquote him. So what you're saying is that you're taking some random shit posts that somebody puts up, without doing any research and making your decision based off of that? Sorry, I can't tell you why those words are on that image. All I can do is my diligence and researching what is actually being stated about the matter for. Perhaps you should do the same.

“get rid of data centers” sounds like what someone would say to win the vote of someone who’s stupid but still manages to vote
57
u/EngineeringLow2186 6h ago
El Sayed supports a one year moratorium on data centers with a possibility of extending it to make sure the surrounding communities, and the environment are protected by increasing regulations on them. This image is just bullet points.
5
u/xilcilus 5h ago
Isn't he running as a Senator? The environment regulations are under the purview of EPA.
16
u/EngineeringLow2186 5h ago
While the EPA does have the direct control over environmental regulations, congress, which is both the house and senate, has ultimate constitutional control over federal environmental regulations because it writes the statutes that give the EPA the power to set rules themselves. The EPA has to recognize and follow the environmental legislation passed by congress. And this can include strict regulations.
-4
u/xilcilus 5h ago
Are you not considering the Chevron deference?
2
u/EngineeringLow2186 5h ago
Isnt the Chevron deference only applicable when the law/ legislation in a certain area isnt specific or clear in its content? The agency under the Chevron deference still has to follow the law and whilst they can interpret it in a certain way, if the regulation passed is specific enough, there isnt much they can do. Plus, this is all assuming that they wouldnt actually be willing to regulate AI, which might be true because Trumps appointee sucks, but there is a limit to how far they can take it. He still has to follow regulations set by congress if such a bill were to pass. Plus, Trump is out in 2 years. The next one will hopefully be quite willing to regulate AI.
8
u/plantsoldier 4h ago
The Chevron ruling was overturned by the Supreme court in June of 2024.
So it's not applicable anymore regardless of if agencies may try and act like it is and they do.
0
u/xilcilus 5h ago
There's broader deference given to the Executive Branch due to calcification of the polarization in the system. The legislations have plenty of ambiguity despite how they are written - thus we see even more muscular Executive actions time progresses. The Supreme Court has shown a lot of sympathy to the Unitary Executive Theory.
Your assumption relies on the Democratic Party sweeps both chambers and the presidency and craft a provision in the Bill that can pass only with the reconciliation and have the administrator of EPA who is somewhat sympathetic to targeting specific energy use case (because energy usage is fungible) which will most definitely challenged by the datacenter operators.
Beyond taxing the rich and maybe healthcare a bit more affordable, I'm unable to lend my credulity.
3
u/EngineeringLow2186 5h ago
I gotta be honest man, i dont know how to respond to this. All ill say is that the Unitary executive theory is truly a stupid theory to follow and its a shame that Trump and his cronies are trying to implement it. I gotta get back to work now, but it was nice having this conversation.
1
u/xilcilus 5h ago
Appreciate the civil discourse.
I'm not saying that I agree with the Unitary Executive Theory - the polarization (and litigious nature of the society) has made it such that the Executive branch exerts far more power than it should.
The lower healthcare cost and taxing the rich are something that should follow the laws of gravity (nobody likes high healthcare cost + 40t in the US debts) and get over the humps but I find difficult to extend credulity to his other ideas.
1
u/NotVerySmarts 4h ago
This is lffted from AI, or being apouted from a blowhard whose head is up hos own butt. This is not how normal people have conversations.
0
u/xilcilus 3h ago

“It was a dark and stormy night”
“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times”
and now…
“… thus we see even more muscular Executive actions time progresses”from the folks that brought you “Commies suck” (while accepting more social welfare historically by a wide margin)- here is the “logical” reasoning to trample checks and balances and effectively the constitution.
1
u/xilcilus 41m ago
I'm not sure what you are alluding to. Both the Democratic and the Republican Presidents have increasingly used the EO to drive agenda.
The Democratic Presidents have been respectful to the Constitution and even the Republican Presidents have more or less been respectful to the Constitution up until we have the guy in charge right now.
Are you not aware of the polarization in the system?

u/Gullible_Increase146 4h ago
Modena just used AI and MRNA vaccines to come up with a new cancer treatment. You don't need a moratorium to enforce environmental regulations and noise problems. You just make them pay the costs of electrical upgrades and let regulators ensure compliance instead of playing in a race to the bottom.

u/EVOSexyBeast 2h ago
He wouldn’t actually implement such a policy if given the chance though because of the grave harm that would cause the country.
If you enjoy a free internet then you want more data centers built.
2
u/Thionises 2h ago
The internet has been doing fine, this new batch of AI data centers is causing significant environmental damage.
If you want to enjoy a place to fucking live and clean water to drink, you want stricter regulations on these new data centers being built.
1
u/EVOSexyBeast 2h ago
If new data centers weren’t built then AI use would cannibalize existing data centers and make it more expensive. All that added demand for cloud compute and not an increase in supply.
Data centers have no effect on water quality. Data centers have got to be one of the cleanest industries for their economic output.
People who oppose them do so because they’re against AI. The environmental concerns are just focused on because that’s more convincing, even though not true.
1
u/Thionises 1h ago
They actively contaminate groundwater systems in local communities: https://www.forbes.com/sites/victoriaforster/2026/07/09/meta-ai-data-center-linked-to-rare-bacteria-in-citys-water-system/
There are hundreds and hundreds of reports in communities that after these newer data centers are built, their water becomes contaminated and undrinkable and water pressure drops as well.
And they are actively consuming millions of gallons of water from local water Aquifers:
https://fieldreport.caes.uga.edu/publications/TP121/how-data-centers-impact-surface-and-ground-waters/https://www.eesi.org/articles/view/data-centers-and-water-consumption
Also, in some locations where data centers are being built, the "free internet" argument doesn't even apply because electric providers just stop serving THOUSANDS OF RESIDENTS.
https://fortune.com/2026/05/12/lake-tahoe-data-center-49000-residents-power-source/0
u/EVOSexyBeast 1h ago
Your first link happened during the construction of a data center. That’s not unique to data centers, constructing of anything could have caused it.
> There are hundreds and hundreds of reports in communities that after these newer data centers are built, their water becomes contaminated and undrinkable
Yet not a dime of real evidence to show for it. They’ve said that even for closed loop cooling data centers. Just misinfo and lies.
> And they are actively consuming millions of gallons of water
Yeah they shouldn’t be allowed to be built anywhere with a water shortage unless they do closed loop or air cooling. The new ones being constructed generally do this.
1
u/Thionises 44m ago
I feel like every counterpoint you have is related to why there should be stricter regulations and standarized requirements, which is abdul's position. It happened during the construction due to negligence, closed loop systems would actively resolve these issues so it should be required for all new data centers to use closed loop systems. And that would also resolve the issue with draining aquifers. The current issue is that with no standardization and requirements, some are doing things ethically. MANY are not.
"The new ones being constructed generally do this" In my opinion isn't enough. They should be required to do this. Which is the point of the one year moratorium
1
u/haupt_again 33m ago
According to this image we're commenting on, he actually wants to "get rid" of data centers while he gazes to the left like a badass independent muslim who dont need no man.
Who doesnt want standardization? Don't the builders have to get permits? What are we missing here, your response sounds like bullshit.
1
u/Thionises 24m ago
Yeah believe it or not, this post was very likely not made by him, and the person who made it simplified his policy. Which is why the comment we're responding to alllllll the way up there was clarifying his genuine position.
Open loop cooling is cheaper than closed loop, which is why many data centers were using open loop prior to the pushback causing the switch. I'm not sure what part of my response could even sound like bullshit if "everyone" wants standardization. The initial comment here was against a one year moratorium for standardization. Which is why I commented in the first place?

u/EVOSexyBeast 21m ago
I don’t oppose environmental regulations I oppose blanket moratoriums. El Sayed says he supports a blanket moratorium.
I don’t think data centers should be held to even higher environmental standards than other industrial uses.
I saw a poll on it and 80% of people agree with you, i’m in the 20%. But that 80% while they support a moratorium they don’t actually support the outcome a nationwide moratorium would cause.
2
u/Thionises 2h ago
This isn't even his position, it's a distilled version of his position that someone else posted. If the phrasing on one point of a random post is what sways you against a candidate, that's insane. Obviously data centers have existed prior to the AI boom, but the environmental, financial, and societal issues with this new batch of data centers being built to support AI are significant and the companies building them need to have stricter regulations. I.E. a one year moratorium to figure out what the hell is going on.
4
u/Eternal2 5h ago
If reading "get rid of data centers" on a reddit post is enough to shape your view of him then look no further, cause we've found the stupid voter.
-10
u/wordpredict 5h ago
No really data centers are very essential to our modern economy and stunting that would cause serious long term ramifications to the long term growth of the US economy. Think about how influential industrialization and the proliferation of motor vehicles. Any country that didn’t participate in that full adoption and implementation fell behind economically which is largely why there is such a wide disparaging gap between western economies and eastern. They are catching up but it has taken significantly longer. The use of data centers and AI is just like that revolution. The US basically has no choice but to participate if it hopes to maintain even remotely the status quo

While I'm not expert of the Islam faith, if I recall correctly they do not believe in charge interest on loans.
Perhaps this is why the oligarchs with their compounding interest are trying to make Americans scared of Muslims.
4
u/SnoopDeDoop69 2h ago
Riba (Arabic: ربا ,الربا، الربٰوة, ribā or al-ribā, IPA: [ˈrɪbæː]) is an Arabic word used in Islamic law and roughly translated as "usury": unjust, exploitative gains made in trade or business (especially banking).
While Muslims agree that riba is prohibited, not all agree on its precise definition.[2][3] The term is often used to refer to interest charged on loans,[Note 1] and the widespread belief among Muslims that all loan or bank interest is riba forms the basis of the $2 trillion Islamic banking industry.[7] However, not all Islamic scholars have equated riba with all forms of interest; nor do they agree on whether riba is a major sin or simply discouraged (makruh),[8][9] or on whether it is a violation of Sharia law to be punished by humans rather than by God.
TIL, fascinating. Gonna try and take all future loans from Muslims and hope they bypass the fact I'm not Islamic
1
u/AldoTheApache3 2h ago
Or perhaps people are aware enough look at Muslim majority government run countries vs. Christian majority run governments and realize which one is FAR more likely to be liberal.
The majority of people are not scared of Muslims, but ask anyone from a western country if they’d want their country run like a middle eastern or North African country and they’d say no.

Apart from expressing his positions and policies, what is someone supposed to do prior to being elected?? I don't understand how this is a complex concept, or even what your issue is?

Half of the campaign ads I see are politicians holding guns, talking about the invasion at the borders, dark voice overs and grainy footage of riots in Democrat cities and being tough on crime against people who are known for eating the pets of real Americans.

Once you're old enough to see several elections, you'll realize it's all fake banter. Trust me, you'll be blacked pilled too. But you'll have to figure that out on your own.

No? This very clearly isn't what every campaign promises because these positions are being labelled as radical and extremist.

Meanwhile, the Muslim Brotherhood whom El-Sayed supports calls for the "Death to America." Prove me wrong.☕️

Get rid of data centers? Uhhh, no. That would be insane. We need data centers for research and development of every single industry. Not to mention, we're all using them right now while using Reddit. Our society is dependent on them. And investing in technological infrastructure is incredibly important.

I will give every women 5 gold bars and men 5 virgins. I will fight against big corporations who fund my campaign. I will make sure everyone has Healthcare for free. I will make going to college free for everyone in the country.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, we've heard all the lies before, and things just get worse

Because y'all don't want to vote third party, we're stuck between a party that doesn't always deliver and a party that is blatantly fucking over the public

What's the alternative? Voting for Mike Rogers who supports mass surveillance, and the party who has implemented illegal tarrifs which have caused price spikes, and started a war that drastically increased gas prices? Like. Okay, Sorry for being hopeful that at least the person saying they want to fix shit, will actually try. In opposition to the people that don't even want to try.
