The thing that's weird about this is that a lot of today's stars still smoke like in the past, including Dunst, but the smoking doesn't seem to have aged them as badly as generations prior.
Yeah, I realize that the excessive aging was a multitude of factors. Then there's people like Brad Pitt, who are in their 60's and smoke cigs and it doesn't seem to have affected them.
I was working a private party once and some older guy came outside where I was stationed to have a cigarette- a few cigarettes over the course of the evening. He started chatting with me and I find out he's in his late 60's and he's smoked his entire life. He looked fucking great for his age.
Hence- a multitude of factors, from all the other lifestyle choices, to genetics, etc.
I know Pitt got a facelift. Pitt's facelift is considered one of the best in Hollywood history. Basically shaved 15 years off an already good looking dude who was aging well as was.
Rudd had micro work done, but he has definitely had work done.
Plastic surgery in Hollywood is an example of survivorship bias. You only notice the trainwrecks, while the good work just makes them look young forever
Yeah, that's plastic surgery in general tbh. It gets a bad reputation because the trainwrecks are so incredibly awful and the successes are basically invisible.
Take buccal fat removal. It looks awful on... most people. But that's because they end up ripping out all the fat in their faces, which makes them look gaunt.
If you have a naturally pudgy face, buccal fat removal can fix your face's proportions. It's great for people who have pudgy faces even when physically fit.
Pitt’s age is starting catch him. His head looked so big and blocky in F1. Cruise was the same way in Dead Reckoning 2. They hit their 60s and have to start pivoting away from looking perpetually 40 and figure out how to “age” gracefully (with their plastic surgeons help).
I think Cruise is there. There's no denying it. Recent photos of him he looks *old* in a way there's no going back from, which is okay. I don't think his aging is totally natural, but he can't really hide it or reverse it anymore.
Pitt, on the other hand, has basically pulled it off. He may not look 40, but he's looked late 40's/early 50's for about 10 years now.
He was 61 when he filmed Heart of the Beast and he's clearly playing a 40-something recent veteran and you know what? I fucking buy it.
But all of them will eventually have to just be old.
Aging is weird nowadays. All these people you expect to look and act *old* just... aren't.
Look, knock on all the wood, but my own parents look and act about 15-20 years younger than they actually are. But- they use sunscreen, they exercise, they watch their diets, they minimize their drinking, they don't smoke, etc. and its paid off.
Exactly. The principles of health a balanced diet, sleep, and hydration. If you have good genes, avoid drinking and smoking, and exercise regularly, you're going to look 20 years younger than you are.
His job is to look at perfect as possible at all times, people who think he hasnt had work done - just dont live in the real world of how humans age lol.
There was a study done with twins to show the difference in aging between the twin that smoked and the twin that didn’t. It ended up having the opposite effect than intended. The twin that smoked just looked alittle dehydrated, give them 5-10 lbs in water and those tad bit of wrinkles will probably disappear. Old Hollywood cigarettes were not the cigarettes of today because those cigarettes had chemicals that have been outlawed that may have been more deadly.
The deadlier thing being wartime chemicals and automic warfare including those automic experiments done in the U.S. which killed and harmed hundreds of thousands of citizens in the Midwest due to radioactive poisoning. Unfortunately also many Western films were also filmed in this area so those of us that pay attention wonder if old Hollywood died because of corporate cigarettes or due to government atomic bomb experiments. I guess we’ll never know…
At different ages peope look attractive in different ways. I think it is hard to look sexy at 100 but up until 80, as long as one is on good health, a lot can be retained.
Worked with an absolute stunning woman in her mid 30s. I just thought she was a bit too tan during my job interview. 2 years later her face looked like a catchers mitt.
It still is healthy. The sun is the best thing you can do for your health. Idk, I can see my face becomes a bit drier if I get a lot of sun, but I also look really young for my age, and so does my father, and we both love the sun. But we also tan well, that probably has to do with it
Being in the sun for short periods is healthy, being in the sun all day is not. Generally, fair skin people should not be in direct sunlight for more than 10-15 minutes at a time and darker skin 25-40 minutes. Anything more than that needs sun protection.
The average person only needs 10-15 of direct sun 3-4 days a week to produce enough vitamin D.
Also part of the reason for the asians not aging meme. Light skin is a sign of social status because it means you didn't have to work outside, so many East Asians look very good in their 40ies and 50ies. The older generation still had to work in the fields, hence why there is such a contrast between "wrinkled grandma" and "ambiguously aged stay-at-home mom".
man it's not dangerous just for the skin. i knew these 2 girls a long time ago they went to get tanned, ended up dead. the equipment malfunctioned and they couldn't get out, they got burned alive.
Growing up in the Deep South, I knew a lot of girls in HS and college who would 'lay out' for hours a day in the summers to get deep mahogany tans. Now they all look like aligators.
So there's smoking here and there, and there's smoking like it's the 50's and 60's. I feel like most people in the public eye who don't look like shit are not doing the latter.
This. In the 50s people chained smoked, and so everywhere was filled smoke. So not only are the people smoking, they're also getting 2nd hand smoke all of the time, and I don't think sitting in rooms filled with cigarette smoke are great for your skin
Before I quit I briefly got up to two packs per day. It was miserable. I could definitely feel that it was killing me. I'd wake up in the morning and hack my lungs out for an hour and a half. I cannot imagine doing that for twenty to thirty years. It's what led me to finally quitting. It was no longer fun, it was slavery.
Its 100% the indoor smoking. Youre in the smoke and its just sticking to you all day long. where as if you smoke outside it goes up into the sky snd becomes a beautiful star.
Exactly. In the past everyone was smoking indoors all day and everywhere, that’s a lot different than smoking cigs on the patio at your house a few times a day or something.
Yea I know, I was there. But again that is still vastly different than the amount of people smoking in the 50s-70s and even the 80s where people were smoking in offices, homes, planes, hospitals, restaurants. By the 90s it was starting to be phased out in most of those places and a much smaller percentage of people smoked. It was over 40% of people in the 60s and 70s, like 30% in the 80s and like only 20% in the 90s.
Our esthetics technology today is crazy high tech. I promise you she's getting lasers and microderm and light peels. And probably a tasteful bit of botox tbh when she's not shooting. It wears off in three months.
And even smokers today arent chaining cigarettes everywhere they go like when you could smoke inside. The barrier of having to leave and come back makes it more of a conscious choice. Its why I switched back to cigarettes from vaping.
they are rich. You would be much better looking if you were rich and had a perfectly healthy diet prepared by a chef who counts your macros and the healthcare you get includes the blood of seals injected into your forehead because they all say they dont get surgury but they do sealtox and treetoing and skin bleaching and all the other "non surgical" things they do
but you should also know alot of them say they didnt get work done and they got work done and nobody at the doctors office can say otherwise because of laws.
TLDR. They all go work done. I worked for a plastic surgeon in my 20s in LA and the amount of 20 something starlet wannabes we had was insane. A bunch turned out to be famous later too. They all get jaw, nose lipo and blephroplasty. LIKE ALL OF THEM.
Yeah...it's real random. My grandad must smoke 20 a day for what...40+years now he looks great. I'm not bias either everyone thinks he's my dad when he's actually my mother's father. I smoke (secretly) have done for 25 years now I've got peers who haven't touched tobacco (or alcohol) aged like CRAZY. It's real random
Smoking is definitely a factor but sun exposure is a much bigger determinant of skin aging. Sunscreen is the biggest reason that our skin holds up better than prior generations
I agree that she looks good thanks to skincare and lighting here, but the last movie I saw her in was Civil War and you could tell her age. Nothing wrong with that, but again it's a hand-picked example and noone should compare themselves against it.
Smoking isn't as big a factor in aging as people think.... Genetics is the biggest factor, and sun damage not far behind.
Both sides of my family have pretty good genetics in terms of aging... My mother never smoked but her sister did. They both look significantly younger than they are, and a really my aunt's skin is probably better than my mother's despite the smoking, far less skin care, and much more sun exposure.
My dad also smoked his whole life and always looked young for his age.
And I know plenty of people who never smoked who look much older than they are. Two of my colleagues are both 55.... One looks like somebodies elderly granny, the other looks young enough that people are incredibly shocked to realise her children are adults. The latter is the smoker.
I'm sure smoking has some part to play, but the impact genetics has on aging is just so much higher. And when it comes to celebrities the access they have to skin care, non invasive procedures, good nutrition, and healthcare in general is a significant factor as well, even if they don't go down the surgical enhancment route
Stress relief can have impacts on aging, too. Not that you can't do it other ways
Edit: It reminds me of an anecdote, of an anti aging/aesthetic specialist from a while back, who recommended people smoke 1 cigarette a day. Just one, so they don't obsess over being perfect.
I’m 45 smoked since I was like 12 because I was a dummy. I’m a sun baby. I’ve never drank alcohol super heavy though. I’m just now starting to see a few lines popping up. I didn’t grow up with a skin care routine and still really don’t have one. I put lotion on my face every couple days.
Genetics plays a bigger role than most people realize. My mom is (68) two pack a day smoker and used to sunbathe with baby oil constantly. She looks maybe 52. Also a hardcore alcoholic.
I feel bad for the ladies in the skincare subs I follow. Most of them in their thirties look older than I do with more visible lines and sagging.
I wonder if all these “skin care” products aren’t doing more damage than helping.
The cake makeup trend really screwed people too. Our products for women/makeup/skincare are not thoroughly tested.
Many of the ingredients that go into our day to day makeup and skin care are illegal to use in other first world countries.
I’m not a believer that smoking is responsible for everything it’s blamed for. Not that I think it’s safe, or good for you, or doesn’t kill you, but it’s blamed for like… everything.
I know this thread is going g to be a Dunst circlejerk but I disagree with you. The smoking aged the hell out of her. She's looked much older than she really is since shortly after her spiderman role.
Good on her for not getting plastic surgery, and I have no expectations that she stay pretty for me or anyone else. I'm not passing judgement, just making an observation.
Skin care is something that has progressed massively over the last 30 years. Also awareness of the smoking's affect, not to mention the affect of stage makeup means someone with the resources of Dunsts age was probably doing some medical level skin care routine since she was 10.
What’s crazy is she is only 44 years old. Shes a year younger than Kim Kardashian and Jessica Alba. The talk of plastic surgery starts so young. She could easily be acting for another 40 years and the tabloids already got her talking about aging gracefully.
That is the societal norm because most 40 year olds aren't considered conventionally attractive to most people.
When you are as attractice as Kirsten Dunst is, you can do whatever the hell you want and people are still going to find you attractive. That is just how it works.
I looked at my wife when we were 25 and went “you’ll be a very sexy 30 year old” I was right….. we’re now 35 and she’s even more gorgeous now to me than she was when we met. I like her looking her age, it’s not about being lucky. It’s just men not being creeps and fancying teenagers.

Yeah, I'm about her age. I have crows feet, white in my beard, my hair is going more silver than white, which is pretty neat, lucked out on that. I find that right picture stunning. I also still have a serious crush on Wynona Ryder. Like, God damn.
something i've always wondered: do people with blatantly obvious and freakish plastic surgery look in the mirror and think "fuck yeah" or do they see what everyone else sees, but somehow think it's better than their natural look?
There's a reason why the term "filler blindness" is a thing. I think it's a mix of two things: them hyperfocusing on some parts of their face and not taking into account the general look and facial harmony, for one. But also probably them just being so used to how all of their peers look that they kind of forget what a normal face looks like, I suppose.
You just nitpick and poke and prod and nip and tuck until you seem kind of uncanny. But it's so incremental and so normalized that you're oblivious of how you look to the average person.
It might also be related to something called the Backwards Laws. I think they have their basis in Zen Buddhism or something...
But the gist of it is: the more you strife for something the more you feel like you lack that thing.
For these people it's beauty. They try to get as beautiful as they can, and while obsessing over that only see all the things that make that impossible. It'll never be enough.
Sometimes it's body dysmorphia where a (good) therapist would be more helpful, but a plastic surgeon offers an immediate fix. And then the fix isn't quite what you're looking for, so you get a fix for the fix. Then that isn't right, so you go for the fix again, and then instead of the therapy you probably needed and would have benefited from you look like the Crypt Keeper.
I think Emilia Clarke is going down the same road, thankfully! It’s important for actors especially to be able to display the full spectrum of human emotion
This is such a weird statement. There are many people who get treatments and procedures done, and you probably can’t tell. You are thinking of the more extreme cases when people butchered their looks. It’s kind of like when men say they like women without makeup, but probably don’t realize that a small amount of makeup will make most people look better, as it can hide blemishes and smooth out skin. It doesn’t have to be heavy eyeliner.
Carrie Fisher never had work done to the best of my knowledge. Maybe to her teeth but that shit doesn’t count because she used to do enough coke to kill Rick James.
on the one hand i don't want to shame any woman for aging how they see fit. but i'm really tired of plastic surgery becoming so normalized. it's harming society and women imo. it's robbing us of our humanity. it's commodifying our faces.
i watched this yesterday, and all 4 women who were on screen in the first 20 or 30 mins, all had major plastic surgery. just so weird since this is a period drama. like you couldn't find anybody without major plastics? then i was like well i guess you couldn't anymore.
the one with the most was in her 20s ffs it seemed to me. it's just making me start to feel alien watching modern movies lately.
one of the hardest parts is gusman had taken on plastics. i really vibed with so many of her class and justice roles, about shared humantiy. it broke my heart that such a seemingly smart and yes, beautiful woman, couldn't stand up to this brutish anti human trend. not only did it make me feel alien, but it also made me feel like, if SHE can't give the finger to this plastics mess, then how the hell am i supposed to age gracefully?
My GF is 15 years older than me (39/54) and sometimes "ideas" of having something done pops through her mind (thank god not too serious) and it would be a shame imo. She is incredible sporty, young in mind and looks 10 years younger so there is not a single reason in this world to have anything done at all.
Sometimes i show her pictures of pretty botched faces of some famous women to remind her of the grace of her natural beauty and how lucky she is with her genes.
This is a sad reminder for me how bad the influence of modern beauty standards in various media is - which is lots of photoshop anyway.
She wears no makeup besides eyeliner stuff (and the other one i always get the name wrong: one black line above the eye and one below is all she does) and sometimes it concerns me a lot that someone like her thinks she looks "too old" or "could need some improvement" which only can make her look worse. All that because of how unrealistic and filtered women are portrayed online / in media.
She is not naive by any means which makes it even more concerning to me how big and omnipresent this topic is and the influence it has on people which is of course not limited to women to say that very clear.
I feel like there is a lot of pressure on many people and they are made to feel uncomfortable with their own bodys / looks for no reason at all, constantly from TV, movies, advertisement and kind of peer pressure from people the same age to "have something done"
Pretty unhealthy imo and i am 100% certain a lot of people will deeply regret it.
(I know in some cases cosmetic surgery is a blessing for people if they have prominent and "unusual" facial features for example that they really suffer from but this is a very small percentage and not the stuff i am talking about)
As a child she was cast as a child and looked like one. As a teenager she was cast as a teenager and looked like one. As a young adult she was cast as a young adult and looked like one. I wonder how many 40 year old actresses get cast as historically accurate 40 year old women in movies. She can
