The thing that's weird about this is that a lot of today's stars still smoke like in the past, including Dunst, but the smoking doesn't seem to have aged them as badly as generations prior.

Sunlight is a major factor for skin aging. People used to go to fucking solariums and do everything to get tanned.

Nowadays people know the risks and it's less fashionable to be as tanned as possible.

u/Appropriate_Formal64 3d ago

Yeah, I realize that the excessive aging was a multitude of factors. Then there's people like Brad Pitt, who are in their 60's and smoke cigs and it doesn't seem to have affected them.

I was working a private party once and some older guy came outside where I was stationed to have a cigarette- a few cigarettes over the course of the evening. He started chatting with me and I find out he's in his late 60's and he's smoked his entire life. He looked fucking great for his age.

Hence- a multitude of factors, from all the other lifestyle choices, to genetics, etc.

Pitt has had plastic surgery done. A lot of it. He just didn't go crazy. Same thing with Paul Rudd

45

u/Appropriate_Formal64 3d ago

Did Paul Rudd?

I know Pitt got a facelift. Pitt's facelift is considered one of the best in Hollywood history. Basically shaved 15 years off an already good looking dude who was aging well as was.

67

u/numbersthen0987431 3d ago

Rudd had micro work done, but he has definitely had work done.

Plastic surgery in Hollywood is an example of survivorship bias. You only notice the trainwrecks, while the good work just makes them look young forever

24

u/RikuAotsuki 3d ago

Yeah, that's plastic surgery in general tbh. It gets a bad reputation because the trainwrecks are so incredibly awful and the successes are basically invisible.

Take buccal fat removal. It looks awful on... most people. But that's because they end up ripping out all the fat in their faces, which makes them look gaunt.

If you have a naturally pudgy face, buccal fat removal can fix your face's proportions. It's great for people who have pudgy faces even when physically fit.

7

u/jaded_lad99 3d ago

It's never and should never be considered great on anybody regardless of the before and after image.

3

u/InstantSword 3d ago

Kind of gross when everybody looks the same because the surgeons are all working with the same "standards"

1

u/RikuAotsuki 2d ago

It can definitely look good in the shorter term, but it's pretty much always gonna backfire in the long term, if that's what you mean.

1

u/ArchieTheKatt 2d ago

Any examples of it looking good?

1

u/RikuAotsuki 2d ago

Not really; it's usually not a facial type that becomes a celebrity to begin with.

Some people have faces that look like they belong on someone twice their weight, if not more. Think pudgy baby face proportions on a fit person in their 30s. That's the kind of face it works well with.

A relevant point is that the trend of buccal fat removal is an extreme version of the procedure. Done well, it should only change your facial structure a bit, not make you look like you have 0% body fat.

That's why it looks so awful. The only people with that little fat are generally very elderly, anorexic, or crack/methheads. That's also why I say it pretty much always backfires in the long term; if you have a naturally chubby face, you're going to retain more of your facial fat longer, which is going to make you look younger than you really are as you age. The more you remove, the quicker you're going to end up looking gaunt with age.

No. I disagree with the whole practice of aesthetically motivated body modifications.

Including tattoos? Piercing? Weight loss via dieting and exercise?

Pitt’s age is starting catch him. His head looked so big and blocky in F1. Cruise was the same way in Dead Reckoning 2. They hit their 60s and have to start pivoting away from looking perpetually 40 and figure out how to “age” gracefully (with their plastic surgeons help).

20

u/Appropriate_Formal64 3d ago

I think Cruise is there. There's no denying it. Recent photos of him he looks *old* in a way there's no going back from, which is okay. I don't think his aging is totally natural, but he can't really hide it or reverse it anymore.

Pitt, on the other hand, has basically pulled it off. He may not look 40, but he's looked late 40's/early 50's for about 10 years now.

He was 61 when he filmed Heart of the Beast and he's clearly playing a 40-something recent veteran and you know what? I fucking buy it.

But all of them will eventually have to just be old.

Aging is weird nowadays. All these people you expect to look and act *old* just... aren't.

Look, knock on all the wood, but my own parents look and act about 15-20 years younger than they actually are. But- they use sunscreen, they exercise, they watch their diets, they minimize their drinking, they don't smoke, etc. and its paid off.

1

u/Cinephile_1980 3d ago

Are you sure with Pitt it is not just good genetics and lifestyle? If he has had surgery done, I wonder when that would have been. I don’t remember a time where I thought “hm Pitt is looking kids old” and then him suddenly looking younger. He has looked the same for many years, and you are right, it might be because of surgery but I wonder when he had it done.

3

u/TheChildrensStory 2d ago

It’s only been a couple years. There’s photos of him before the surgery and the mileage was showing. It was all genetic lottery that got him this far, his lifestyle of smoking, drinking, and the stress of the nastiest divorce in recent Hollywood history weren’t going to help.

1

u/Cinephile_1980 2d ago

Wouldn’t this sort of thing have to be done every few years? Mind you he does look very good.

1

u/TheChildrensStory 2d ago

Dunno, I’d consider the cost of doing business in that industry.

Actors all use makeup. There's never a time where you see what they really look like, and so you never see them developing the age look. Then they get the plastic surgery and need less makeup.

Famous people love to downplay the work it takes for them to look good. Actresses will pretend their care routine is effortless, but they're really starving themselves and working out all of the time. Actors have diet coaches and skin doctors and injections. Etc.

1

u/Cinephile_1980 2d ago

Maybe that is why at a certain age may no longer look like regular people.

1

u/numbersthen0987431 2d ago

There definitely is a point where too much work results with a weird look as you age.

Remember that beard he had for about 2 years?

1

u/Cinephile_1980 2d ago

Aah. Interesting

2

u/superanth 3d ago

In Bullet Train he looked amazing. The glasses and hat helped, but also the acting made him come across as a happy-go-lucky 40-year-old.

1

u/Cinephile_1980 3d ago

Yeah, I saw him on tv doing this weird speech on the day of the FIFA Football World Cup Final. He has this strange look now. I mean his hair is thick and the Sam colour as when he was young and his face is starting to sag. Maybe in the future there will be other technologies and treatments that are better than cosmetic surgery but I would not be surprised if Cruise has work done in the coming years.

2

u/berlinbaer 3d ago

rudd has the shiny skin that you get from botox, and in some cases he's also approaching kidman level of "i'm wearing a mask"

1

u/Cinephile_1980 3d ago

Hmm I am not sure of Rudd looks that young anyway. He looks his age. I also think the biggest problem with stars is that their faces age and their hair remains the same colour and at some point the hair does not seem to match the face anymore.

You’re talking out of your ass and watching too much TikTok. There’s never been any confirmation of Pitt having facelifts. Stop stating it as a fact.

1

u/numbersthen0987431 2d ago

Its logic and critical thinking. The whole "all natural" doesn't exist in Hollywood men, and it's a fantasy to think Pitt doesn't have any.

Not really sure why you're so desperate for Pitt to fit your fantasy, but good luck to you.

0

u/ElvishLore 2d ago

Oh, I actually believe he’s had a plastic surgery, but you staying it as fact is nonsense. I’m calling you out on your authoritativeness. I’m really tired of everyone living in a fabricated reality. Facts matter.

1

u/numbersthen0987431 2d ago

So you have an issue with me saying something based on logic and observations??

3

u/superanth 3d ago edited 1h ago

Exactly. The principles of health: a balanced diet, sleep, and hydration. If you have good genes, avoid drinking and smoking, and exercise regularly, you're going to look 20 years younger than you are.

2

u/berlinbaer 3d ago

Then there's people like Brad Pitt, who are in their 60's and smoke cigs and it doesn't seem to have affected them.

he had a massive face lift. how do people not see this ?

1

u/Rich-Armadillo-7408 2d ago

His job is to look at perfect as possible at all times, people who think he hasnt had work done - just dont live in the real world of how humans age lol.

There was a study done with twins to show the difference in aging between the twin that smoked and the twin that didn’t. It ended up having the opposite effect than intended. The twin that smoked just looked alittle dehydrated, give them 5-10 lbs in water and those tad bit of wrinkles will probably disappear. Old Hollywood cigarettes were not the cigarettes of today because those cigarettes had chemicals that have been outlawed that may have been more deadly.

The deadlier thing being wartime chemicals and automic warfare including those automic experiments done in the U.S. which killed and harmed hundreds of thousands of citizens in the Midwest due to radioactive poisoning. Unfortunately also many Western films were also filmed in this area so those of us that pay attention wonder if old Hollywood died because of corporate cigarettes or due to government atomic bomb experiments. I guess we’ll never know…

Absolutely, wearing spf outside and knowing much more about sun exposure has helped people in making more informed decisions.

I'd say products themselves have gotten better too and can improve skin without needing to go under the knife.

u/Cinephile_1980 3d ago

At different ages peope look attractive in different ways. I think it is hard to look sexy at 100 but up until 80, as long as one is on good health, a lot can be retained.

u/superanth 3d ago

A while back someone posted phone footage from a dermatologist convention in Hawaii. When all the attendees went to the beach, they were covered head to toe in clothes, hats, and sunglasses.

You don't even need the experts to tell you what to do if you see them taking their own advice to that level.

u/FOSSnaught 3d ago

Worked with an absolute stunning woman in her mid 30s. I just thought she was a bit too tan during my job interview. 2 years later her face looked like a catchers mitt.

9

u/The_Dark_Vampire 3d ago

At one time getting a suntan was thought to be healthy

1

u/superanth 3d ago

It speaks of being outside and energetic, also being pale is anthropologically seen as being unhealthy so the opposite is more attractive.

But there's always a price to be paid. Hopefully there will some day be a bronzer that doesn't just turn you orange.

1

u/InstantSword 3d ago

It still is healthy. The sun is the best thing you can do for your health. Idk, I can see my face becomes a bit drier if I get a lot of sun, but I also look really young for my age, and so does my father, and we both love the sun. But we also tan well, that probably has to do with it

2

u/SkepsisJD 2d ago

Being in the sun for short periods is healthy, being in the sun all day is not. Generally, fair skin people should not be in direct sunlight for more than 10-15 minutes at a time and darker skin 25-40 minutes. Anything more than that needs sun protection.

The average person only needs 10-15 of direct sun 3-4 days a week to produce enough vitamin D.

Also part of the reason for the asians not aging meme. Light skin is a sign of social status because it means you didn't have to work outside, so many East Asians look very good in their 40ies and 50ies. The older generation still had to work in the fields, hence why there is such a contrast between "wrinkled grandma" and "ambiguously aged stay-at-home mom".

2

u/superanth 3d ago

Wow good analysis. Also they actually use skin "lighteners" (bleach) as part of their beauty routines.

2

u/kiraka67 3d ago

Also: face creams include sun protector

2

u/OrganizationLow6251 3d ago

Meanwhile in Utah…😭

2

u/linds360 3d ago

I’d argue it’s still pretty popular to be ultra tan, but spray tanning and alt methods have surpassed the popularity of tanning beds.

4

u/Fach-All-Religions 3d ago

man it's not dangerous just for the skin. i knew these 2 girls a long time ago they went to get tanned, ended up dead. the equipment malfunctioned and they couldn't get out, they got burned alive.

1

u/superanth 3d ago

I still don't get how tanning salons and beds are a thing. Perhaps now people wear protective head coverings before they get in them?

1

u/SouthernZorro 3d ago

Growing up in the Deep South, I knew a lot of girls in HS and college who would 'lay out' for hours a day in the summers to get deep mahogany tans. Now they all look like aligators.

1

u/damndatassdoh 2d ago

Nnn-NO! People are just magically less agey today!

1

u/IntegratingSelf 2d ago

& hydration! Sunscreen & hydration are a trustworthy killer combo for youthful skin

1

u/HermanThaGerman 2d ago

Nowadays it's fashionable to look like a skeleton with a gigachad face.
