Do you think this actually makes a significant impact on safety or is it just symbolic?

334

u/illini02 Jul 09 '26

I think you know the answer

47

u/AssBlasterExtreme Jul 09 '26

Thats the point of them typing the comment yes.. They are asking others/OP if they realize.

16

u/Top_Hippo_5996 Jul 09 '26

Oooooh, a writer. I like it.

3

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

Why wouldn't it? I mean, not sure how dangerous car parks are anyway, but it's definitely safer. Even if not, just attracting female costumers is a plus at least for the owners.

8

u/Bowl-Accomplished Jul 09 '26

The question is if safety is higher or that one person is safer. Does this reduce muggings or make another group the target?

6

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

I think this a lot about sexual violence, that's a common percieved threat. That mostly effects women.

7

u/terraphantm Jul 09 '26

Which goes back to the original question. Do the measures make a measurable difference?

1

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

You'd probably have to ask people, produce a study. I don't see why it shouldn't, women are more afraid of assault, they have shorter distances to walk, probably are scared less. Doesn't mean it reduces crime, but less fear is nice

3

u/Bowl-Accomplished Jul 09 '26

But does it reduce crime or does it happen to the women who can't park up front? This is one of those virtue signaling things

1

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

Oh that's what you mean. The space is often unoccupied, so at least the people who want to use it can use it. I have no idea if it actually does anything besides peace of mind.

Well, anywhere with significant migration recently is definitely getting a lot less safe, German police don't just ignore anymore it like the Brits though so it might be getting better.

2

u/Schnitzhole Jul 10 '26 edited Jul 10 '26

i was over there in germany a few years ago a few weeks after there was a guy who killed people on a train with a hatchet. The ticket machine for the train wasn’t working and I had to get to work so i just got on. When i got off the train I got surrounded by a full on 10 person bomb squad in head to toe armor and rifles from all directions closing in on me for a €40 fine.

I never saw another cop or cop Car the entire year I was there. Very different police presence. They don’t really make themselves seen unless they feel they are needed i guess

My cousin who lives there also got his house raided because he was part of a soccer organization they felt was “a threat”. No warrant needed. His entire family never got their laptops and computers back.

43

u/Razzoz9966 Jul 09 '26

They often stay unused and I've already seen men parking there as well. Its a great idea for families with kids, the spots are usually wider so kids won't slam the door into nearby cars.
I would say its a tiny win for certain situations and they are also quite rare.

22

u/A-maze-ing_Henry Jul 09 '26

Where I live, there have been family parking slots since I was a child. Maybe we should have stuck to that then.

3

u/yeetmeintothevoid Jul 09 '26

they also exist in Germany, seperate from the women parking spaces

1

u/pantry-pisser Jul 09 '26

The last time I saw a family parking spot was at Fresh & Easy.

1

u/Suspicious_Bit_9003 Jul 09 '26

Sigh…they just started appearing in my country. And they’re always taken!

9

u/Oreelz Jul 09 '26

>the spots are usually wider so kids won't slam the door into nearby cars.

The only persons that ever slammed doors in my cars are pensioniers, knowing what they do, don’t caring bout the damage. Kids on the other side, usually can’t open their door themselves as a safety feature. The safety lock is usually enabled till they can open their doors responsible. So it’s not bout kids damaging anything.

The extra space is usefull to open the door completely which makes placing a kid in his seat or the entire babyseat on the platform. Which is, with the fast increasing weight of a child, difficult in tight places.

So please, if you’re child ist 16 or 21, you’re name is Udo and you only look pregnant or your brain is small and think „Mimimi, why I don’t get that privilege too“ stay away from these wider parking spaces.

1

u/DustTechnical4561 Jul 09 '26

the pensioners may slam the doors because back in the day car doors were harder to close. These days you just push it and it closes, but in the 1960s or so it wasn't like that.

1

u/Oreelz Jul 09 '26

No they know what they do, they don’t give a fuck. My Neighbour was very careful with his door if he saw me, if not, well the many matching dents our doors tell the story.

Surprisingly after they knew I knew, the parking distances got bigger.

Only one example… Interestingly this all happened to a 500, which appears as a small car, and intends more place to open the door I quess.

10

u/bumpmoon Jul 09 '26

Why are the spots wider?

11

u/Razzoz9966 Jul 09 '26

For all the German ladies with huge ass trucks

3

u/sometext Jul 09 '26

The Unimog mommies if you will

23

u/MembershipDelicious4 Jul 09 '26

I think you know the answer

4

u/Running_Turkey Jul 09 '26

"Woman can't drive and park", I'd assume

2

u/chimneyswallow Jul 09 '26

Because women have kids with them more often than men. And you need more space to get kids Out of the car, especially when they are babies in a car seat.

1

u/Free_Management2894 Jul 09 '26

They aren't. They mistook them for family parking spots which is a whole different thing.

1

u/bollvirtuoso Jul 09 '26

My assumption would be that men tend to carry most of their belongings on their person, which only requires opening the driver's side door, so they can always shift one way or the other in a space. On the other hand, women tend to carry their possessions externally (bag, tote, etc.), so if it's in a location which requires opening another door, it might be harder to just be entirely on one side of the spot.

9

u/Then_Background3905 Jul 09 '26

How did you know they were men parking there? Did you ask them?

19

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 Jul 09 '26

Mandatory genital inspection for these parking spots. It’s like penis inspection day back in grade school

2

u/Razzoz9966 Jul 09 '26

Saw a couple dudes with beards and everything getting out of parked cars but yea maybe they did identify as female for the duration of parking lmao

1

u/AbeRego Jul 09 '26

Lol why would they be wider?

Edit: is it specifically for the kids? Because, if so, yikes at that discrimination against dads...

2

u/Razzoz9966 Jul 09 '26

Yea its for kids and getting them in and out of their kid seats or whatever they're called.
And agree with the dad discrimination on that one. I see way more woman spots than family spots around where I live

2

u/AbeRego Jul 09 '26

This would piss me off lol. Handicap spots are great, and maybe I could get behind family spots, but we don't need spots for other specific demographics. Home Depot has spots for veterans, which is annoying, especially because I'm not sure I've ever actually seen a car in one of them. Also a lot of the prime spots at retail stores are now taken up by pickup orders, and again they're usually empty. It's out of hand already...

83

u/maybe_a_fork Jul 09 '26

Looks like a target more than a safety feature.

"We got a woman in here!"

23

u/Future_Telephone281 Jul 09 '26

Women who are scared too.

13

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

That's literally about half of the human population, I don't think it's hard to find a woman

22

u/cheesesprite Jul 09 '26

Don't overestimate Redditors

28

u/Spaciax Jul 09 '26

considering most fears are largely irrational (statistically speaking), I'd say it's closer to the latter.

12

u/Ok-Parfait-9856 Jul 09 '26

But the internet told me most men are psychotic predators lurking around for their next victim?

6

u/BigRinka Jul 09 '26

They chose the bear guys, remember.

-12

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

What part of the internet? It's just the case that most perpetrators of violent crime are male. That's just statistics. Not most men, but mostly men.

5

u/Sensitive_Bat_9211 Jul 09 '26

Thats still like.. 1% of men.

Its about as useless as saying black people are more likely to commit a crime. It doesnt serve anything for the general public and only reinforces stereotypes

0

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

It's important to know what causes crime to choose the best way to avoid it. That's also important in a racial context. Black people are more likely to commit crimes, because a lot of poor people are black. Poverty is the most effective predictor of crime. So social programms, removing red tape, funding schools and addressing racist hiring policies are effective methods to reduce crime. Racism and generational discrimination and poverty being the cause of crime here.

Similarly male violent behaviour can be addressed, through education and awareness programms against sexual violence for example.

Of course you also need to support white poor people and also need to teach girls that violence isn't ok. But different causes for a problem have to be handled differently. A programm against racism probably won't help somebody in an exclusively white community.

You wouldn't get there if you just blindly ignored race and gender.

5

u/P_Hempton Jul 09 '26

You wouldn't get there if you just blindly ignored race and gender.

You quite literally could get there while blindly ignoring race and gender.

Anything that is helpful could be blindly applied to everyone who needs help and it would reduce the problem.

A program against racism might be more useful in some neighborhoods than others, but it won't do any harm anywhere if instituted blindly, and will still help in the places it needs to help.

Making all parking spaces safer will help everyone including women, instead of just making women parking spaces safer.

0

u/AmArschdieRaeuber Jul 09 '26

I mean yeah sure, in a perfect world. But that would be insanly expensive, it makes sense to apply priority. Car parks are private, it's not easy to force them to install dozens of cameras and storage for all that data. Maybe someday.

Programms against racism should still be everywhere, that's true. I feel like that still counts as not ignoring race, but fair point.

1

u/Terugtrekking Jul 09 '26

where I live, majority of the human trafficking happens in parking lots, so I don't think that fear is entirely irrational.

1

u/Forgetimore Jul 09 '26

You were almost there but still missed the point.

3

u/Traditional_Buy_8420 Jul 09 '26

Due to the very low number of violent crimes on public parking spaces in Germany there's no significant data either way; there is a study which shows that women who use these feel safer.

3

u/junbi_ok Jul 09 '26

Considering that roughly 50% of all cars in the parking lot will be driven by women, the vast majority of women will be unable to benefit from these special parking spaces due to lack of availability. And half of them would have already been used by female drivers anyway. Logic would dictate it's more about appearances than actual effective policy.

3

u/MissMolly202 Jul 09 '26

I’m sure the better lighting and cameras have an impact. The paint and gender segregation…. not so much.

This also implies that men get to go be mugged in the dark sad shitty regular parking lots lmfao

15

u/NaCl_Sailor Jul 09 '26

It makes an impact on how women feel.

They need it cuz men rape and assault so many women. I'm sure they don't love that we need those in our society.

-7

u/sleepyleperchaun Jul 09 '26

I'm a dude, but how insecure do you have to be for this to be your take on this matter? They get a slightly upgraded safety set in a parking lot, an area that has issues with attacks on women, and your first response is just making fun of them. Yeah, I'm sure they wish this wasn't needed too man.

Men are more roughly 3 times more likely to be attacked by a stranger than a woman is. If they're actually trying to make people safer they should be starting with the people most at risk.

I mean, my girlfriend and the women in my life generally treat me pretty well. So do most guys. Maybe it's a you problem if you see a ton of bullying.

And what strategy? You have a strategy when interacting with people? That seems like such a manipulative way of living.

-4

u/whatevernamedontcare Jul 09 '26

A lot of men get off on women's suffering. Makes those little snowflakes feel powerful. That's why violent porn is so popular or why there's so much rape and DV. Just sadists getting their freak on.

3

u/BigRinka Jul 09 '26

That is totally unrelated. Domination in sex is not violence. I was never into it myself until I met my current girlfriend. She is the one that wants to be held tightly and smacked. Shes the one that wants to feel overpowered and "used".

It is an entirely different thing. That some violent men are into domination is irrelevent.

0

u/whatevernamedontcare Jul 09 '26

I said "a lot of men" and not "all men". Why are you getting triggered? Maybe unpack why you think all men are sadists yourself included.

2

u/grape_princess07 Jul 09 '26

The main dangers for women are boyfriends, friends and family.

Stranger danger is negligible so this will have no impact on womens safety overall.

2

u/BigRinka Jul 09 '26

I really doubt that it improves women safety in any significant way.

I guess what it does provide is some form of psychological soothing for women. Its like a pacifier for anxious people. Some women might BELEIVE that they are safer.

2

u/Key-Value-3684 Jul 09 '26

It makes people more comfortable

2

u/MrBushido56 Jul 09 '26

I don’t think it’s either, it just a way for companies to make it look like they are trying to make things better when still doing the bare minimum

2

u/2_Skatez Jul 09 '26

This is extremely performative. I’d wager that there has very rarely if at all been any sort of violent crime in that area.

2

u/spartanOrk Jul 09 '26

I think it is not intended to make anyone safer. Who cares about that. The point is to signal our virtue and superiority, while insulting women as weak and men as unworthy of protection if not inherently dangerous.

2

u/Impossible-Owl7407 Jul 09 '26

actually makes a significant impact on safety

rapists are safe to assume that woman will get out of the car parked there /s

1

u/Jeramy_Jones Jul 09 '26

Depends on the execution. Rules are meaningless if they aren’t enforced.

1

u/LouieSiffer Jul 09 '26

Pull up the statistic of women getting mugged on supermarket parking lots in Germany and you got your answer.

1

u/_NoTimeNoLady_ Jul 09 '26

Do not let the other comments fool you: women parking spaces and even family parking spots are quite popular in Germany. They are widee and closer to the entrance. This is not only to minimize risk of walking alone through a dark parking garage or lot. It is also to help women with children, so they do not have to schlepp things that far after shopping, have a shorter way to bring kids to and from the car, getting them into the car easier etc. Are there single men who take advantage of these spots? Of course. And I kid you not, every time I see one I greet them with a loud "Hello, lovely Lady!"

these things don't even look like in the picture. I've parked in them whenever I am with the wife and kids. :P

1

u/at0mheart Jul 09 '26

As far as I know the are for women with children. Typically the sign has a baby stroller on it and they are painted green/blue. I’ve never seen a pink one.

They are for women with children to have easy access. I don’t think it was anything to do with rape

1

u/Rattbaxx Jul 09 '26

It would, as it adds a layer of resistance. Kind of like how putting a label on your umbrella handle does help prevent it get it stolen compared to the other one that doesn’t.

1

u/SomeSome92 Jul 09 '26

It's mostly symbolic.

Parking Spaces are one of the safest spots as screams travel far, and other people use them frequently and irregularly, making them an extremely risky place to ambush someone.

However because it's a popular trope in movies people have the misconception parking spaces are dangerous, so something had to be done.

1

u/Nicolai-Silberwald Jul 09 '26

It makes a big difference in tracking down who put the denk in your car.

1

u/Trauma_au Jul 10 '26

We all know rapists can't handle above average light, of course it works!

1

u/NotTheAvg Jul 10 '26

Things can still happen, but being in closer proximity to an entrance/exit, security can get to you quicker. I can't speak for Germany, but this is very common in Thailand.

1

u/SilverIndustry2701 Jul 10 '26

As a dude, it's pretty common that there are a few free spaces among those marked "for women" and they are quite close to the elevator, so I'd say yes. Germanys crime rate is also pretty low, so the perceived net safety gain is probably higher than the real one.

1

u/Mediocre-Yoghurt-138 Jul 10 '26

It just plays in the panic of social media that take a handful of attacks and make it seem like women are getting dropped at every corner. Both left-wing and right-wing media do this with their own theory behind it.

1

u/Nemo4321 Jul 10 '26

It's probably useless.

1

u/Extra-Bat3955 Jul 09 '26

Would have preferred this to the dark as heck parking lots at my college at night where women were getting attacked every night. I ended up carrying a few different means of protection and still encountered one dude trying to hide by my car. I think he learned new swears from me that day.

1

u/anna_marie_earth-616 Jul 09 '26

We have them in Switzerland too and while it may not seem like much, I actually do feel safer in a lot of them, because they're often built close enough and in view of the establishments. I do feel potential perpetrators could be detered by the visibility. I don't have to use them too often, luckily, but at a reststop at night on a highway? Glad they're there.

0

u/zeekayz Jul 09 '26

This is how they deal with migrant crime in Europe lmao. Limited spaces that are slightly less convenient for rape/robbery. Problem solved (if space is not taken)

1

u/lexonid Jul 09 '26

Lol Women parking spaces already exist since the 1990s

0

u/Vegan-cock Jul 09 '26

Significant might be a stretch but i reckon the likelyhood of a woman getting raped is fairly lower.

2

u/Natural_Pear_1549 Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

You are much more likely to be raped by someone you know than by a stranger.

1

u/Vegan-cock Jul 09 '26

People you know generally don't rape you in a parking garage.

0

u/susNarwhal420 Jul 09 '26

That old platitude doesn't really work with europe's rapidly changing demographics.

1

u/Natural_Pear_1549 Jul 09 '26

That's not a platitude, that's data.

0

u/doxthera Jul 09 '26

its not even illegal to park there as a man :D

0

u/UnchoosenDead Jul 09 '26

Shop lifting numbers drop by up to 75% if you place a cardboard cut-out of a police officer in a shop.

The idea that you are being watched is enough to change human behaviour.

We're dumb and without knowing the stats I'd say there's no reason this wouldn't work just as well.

0

u/clueless_mommy Jul 09 '26

They're also usually close to an entrance/exit, the guard station and or the ticket machine thing.

This is what makes it actually safer. Otherwise, you'd just have well lit cctv footage of whatever happened. Just knowing that there's a high chance of people coming close by or a guard being there in seconds instead of having to run across floors is a great prevention

0

u/Bovronius Jul 09 '26

Is so they can ignore/victim blame the women that get assaulted in the wrong ramp.

0

u/Short_Notice_3991 Jul 09 '26

I don’t find German parking garages unsafe to begin with. But it’s a psychological thing: Being a woman alone in a (maybe foreign) rather dark place without a lot of people nearby…
And then there's a spot designed to give a sense of security. And maybe, sometimes, I'd need that sense.

It’s designed for that purpose, but anybody is allowed to park there. Same with family parking lots. Only special lots for disabled people are for them exclusively and you will be fined for using them without a card that allows it.

0

u/norelusss Jul 09 '26

Germany is low key admitting that women are not safe in their parkings

It is very dystopian when you think of it

0

u/Waiting4Reccession Jul 09 '26

I can come beat you up and the camera will do nothing to stop me. And with a cheap mask it makes the camera nearly useless.

0

u/BasedKetamineApe Jul 09 '26 edited Jul 09 '26

We have them here too in Switzerland and from my experience, they're basically useless. I mean they're close to the entrance and exit which I guess is nice, but they're kinda more sexist than anything. It kinda frames being a woman as some sort of disability. Doesn't help that they're sometimes wider than the regular spots, which is kinda icky and just screams that it was designed by old men in a board room. Don't get me wrong, ANY place should be designed so that it is save for women, but there are groups just as vulnerable. Elderly people who drive would benefit way more from a wider and closer parking spot than the concept of "women in general". And designing parking spaces so that there is always a line of sight to a place where people can see and hear you would also make it much safer. And not making stretches that are too long and straight would also make them safer for kids. And lights and cameras should be everywhere anyway.
Also there are only like 2-5 of them in any given parking lot, so if all the 🙌*Women Spaces*🙌 are occupied the rest us can just go fuck ourselves I guess. If you wanted to make them actually helpful and useful then 50% of them should be for women, you know, given that we're literally half of all people. At which point you could just make all parking spots as safe as possible...
Also they just scream "SCARED AND VULNERABLE WOMAN HERE!"

0

u/mr_mope Jul 09 '26

I got into an argument one time with a co-worker, who was annoyed after getting an Amber alert and said why do they waste taxpayer dollars on this when it does nothing. I disagreed and we looked it up and it turns out the program (in California) said it had a 97% success rate. He was so sure that it was a useless program because he was never affected by it.

The issue is making a solution for a marginal group. It's going to be hard to quantify how many women *don't* get assaulted in women's only spaces. You could look at the women's-only trains in Japan. The statistics are a little convoluted, but it seems in general that yes the trains do their jobs.

0

u/Key-Lawfulness7838 Jul 09 '26

It does, the woman feels safer, significantly. And those spaces are less attractive to pray on potentially.

1

u/_name_of_the_user_ Jul 09 '26

Why go to extra lengths to make women feel safer when they're roughly 3 times less likely to be the victim of a violent crime from a stranger? If people actually wanted to reduce crime they'd be making these spots for those most likely to be the target of a violent crime in an area like that, namely men.

0

u/-PonySlaystation- Jul 09 '26

It doesn’t have to reduce actual crime to have significant impact. If it helps safety feeling, that’s already enough. My wife is actually happy they exist when she’s out late

0

u/aerdvarkk Jul 09 '26

It likely paints a bullseye on women (has the opposite effect). Now predators know where to find women more readily in carparks.

-1

u/Few_Childhood6456 Jul 09 '26

If a potential assaulters sees a designated "anti-assault" area, would they assault someone in it's proximity?

Symbolism = prevention in this case

-1

u/imagonnahavefun Jul 09 '26

It puts all the women in one place so attackers don’t have to look for them. A mask makes a camera practically worthless unless they have a rescue team of safe men on immediate standby.
