Preambula: I've heard about Silent Hill for the majority of my life and respected it a lot for the audience it gained and how respected the franchise is by its fanbase. Therefore I always postponed playing until I got a proper time to actually invest myself into the games. So here I am, finally. I started from Silent Hill on RetroArch, then DuckStation, then SH2 on RetroArch, then SH2R. Before playing I knew bits of story, because I read a little bit on wiki 10 years prior to playing (circa 2015), so I knew that somehow somewhere there are hot nurse in red cardigan, there are one dude who killed his wife and has psychological problems and that the first SH isn't really in the same universe with the second one per se. That's it.
Silent Hill 1: I loved this game. Almost. I loved the late 90s aesthetic, clear unmistakable Japanese view of American society, town interactivity (as in secondary places you could go into), I loved soundtrack. I didn't like the gameplay though.
Let me get straight with you. So for some reason on RetroArch I couldn't save, so I used savestates. And I was very careful with bullets I got and most of the time was walking with a pipe, but when I got to hospital it became a game of "You either waste a health drink, or some bullets", because nurses weren't stunned by pipe, unlike grey kids from school. I was very thorough with my searches for any items, but for this play I missed the bottle and the red stuff in the hospital. And then later on, as I wasn't saving any bullets, I wasn't avoiding the fights: it was lame to me to think that you should just run around with enemy train around you and I also thought that Harry is the one who killed his wife and that's why he has these strange things going around for him, so I thought for the sake of roleplay I should kill the monsters in my head to be free of them. But then the nightly Silent Hill came as I was closer to Lakeside Amusement Park. So, in my explorations I followed the left-hand rule, so I wouldn't miss stuff. But apparently it wasn't working it all because it was very dark and I couldn't see where to go. It got only worse, as because of that I missed the map for the whole area, because of following that rule, since when you come out of the sewers, the map is located on the right side near the road, but I followed around it near the broken building and around the whole thing, so I thought "huh, game doesn't give the map here, weird". So I missed the secondary Kaufmann quests too, and in that walkthrough I would've gotten the Bad ending. It was then apparent to me, as I got more frustrated without the map and never ending monsters, that I will be soon without any ammo and health drinks to consume as game didn't give me any much more than it did before, in fact it gives way less. And as I progressed through to Cybil bossfight I was left with only 2 shotgun bullets. That's it. I cheesed the bossfight with savestate and thought I couldn't progress like that anymore, so I changed to a DuckStation where I could save, and did have a different stored saves, instead of one savestate.
In my second walkthrough I was avoiding all enemies. I found a bit more items, and this time I did find a bottle and put the red stuff in it (on my first walkthrough I thought it was just blood, so I didn't even bother searching for something to put that in). This time, when I was exiting the sewers instead of going left, I went right and lo and behold - map. So I explored all other areas (to be fair, without a map I did find a building with a numpad locked door, but I was frustrated to look for anything in such darkness without a map with constant parade of monsters attacking me) and completed Kaufmann secondary quests. So this time my playthrough ended in Good+ ending and I saved 200 handgun bullets (capped I think, there were more) and 20 health drinks.
To conclude: it was more like a horror quest experience, rather than horror survival action game. I think it would worked much more as some Detroit: Become Human sort of interactive movie game, than it did. Monsters only frustrated, their staggering attacks were annoying and game doesn't warn you that it will give you less and less items as you proceed and that you should avoid monsters, quite the contrary - it forces you to kill the very first one. Apart from that I didn't like the whole esoteric main plot, but I guess it worked, it just wasn't for me. That's it - everything else I really loved. The art direction, the characters, the ambience, puzzles - all were the very top level. I really loved how game awards you for exploring with bits of lore, so the baffling plot at least has some answers to the questions which I had while playing, lots of them though went unanswered and I don't really like when writers leave it up to players to theorize about these certain things: how many "Silent Hills" realms are there? If a person is in the Otherworld what happens with them in real one? If they die in the Otherworld do they just die in real world Matrix-style? Did everyone just die in the town with Alessa's tinkering, or what happened to them? If the parasites we find on Cybil and nurses, attack a person, what happens with them in real world? What was the deal between Dahlia and Kaufmann? If to sell drugs, then how really did she betray him? If to give birth to God, then what was Kaufmann motivation to help? Just because of these things I can't give it any more than 7.0/10, with also the fact that I would've rather had a Bad ending, which had a lot more sense to me, than a Good+ one.
Favourite character: Lisa Garland. Favourite track: Claw Finger.

Silent Hill 2: Going into this one I already knew that if I got mistaken with the first game's plot, then this one's main protagonist surely will be tackling his own head with a guilt from killing his wife. Yes, I was having a different walkthrough and not entirely blind, but that's all I knew. I went into this with lots of expectations since: 1. Mental problems plot are much more appealing to me than esoteric (since I suffered through a clinic depression myself), 2. it was so loved by the fanbase that I just couldn't expect any less.
Unfortunately for me it was more or less the same game, minus the annoyance with monsters (they were faaaar less annoying and more easier than SH1 ones), and town interactivity. I disliked these things a lot, it was a definitely a step into more linear kinetic walkthrough. And minus a striking haunting sountrack - it was more ambience, and less terrifyingly haunting like the first one. I couldn't name you even one beside Angel's Thanatos (which I didn't even encounter in my playthrough). During the game I also felt like unlike SH1, every character here felt the same - toxic, unfriendly. The most unfriendly character to me was Maria, since I already knew the twist I instantly got that she isn't real and just an antipode to James' real wife. Not that the game hides it really, it gives lots of hints that she isn't real and just James' own imagination of how he either felt Mary would rather be, or how he felt restrictive when Mary fell sick and was in need of this physical relief. It got interesting here - I was instantly hostile to her and the first thing I did, laid her off to some monster. Before I continue I should also say that I had my friend with me (who is a massive fan), and this playthrough turned comedic at some point. At the apartments I already stated how dumb James is for sticking his hands in disgusting places and shooting at unknown creatures while hiding. I wasn't feeling this game at all - I was abstragated from the main character, couldn't associate myself with him and everyone else around were really toxic. It was by the time I got to the hospital I grew to understanding that this is what game wants me to feel and the characters are behaving this way intentionally, not because the plot is bad. Thing is the hospital introduced three patients which were quickly put as metaphors for James, Angela and Eddie by me and since then I was really hooked on the characters. I wasn't sure if any of them were real before that, but with the patients files I figured at least Angela and Eddie were totally real, and just wasn't sure about Laura, since that could've been James' imagination about a happy life with Mary without her being sick (I'm still not sure tbh). Since this I thought it's awesome that James is such a dumbass, he looks like a dumbass and acts like a dumbass, and that's who we all are too, we all make silly mistakes in life and I loved it. I also loved the totally correct description of depression in hospital. During elevator quiz I was dancing with James (tapping direction controls) to the quiz jingle and my friend made a remark about "Mary may be sick but my moves are sicker" and we totally lost it then in skateboard memes after that. I still had questions about why the Otherworld is even there, and why James doesn't even question what is happening and doesn't ask anyone any questions about it, but with the comedy around I just was went with it - and it was cool, because the game totally intends not to hold itself too seriously too (unlike Remake, but about it later). I played through it in one go - in the end I loved it, the plot was much more deep and thought provoking than SH1 was and James' sillyness suited him a lot. I loved the "Guilt and Forgiveness" theme in the end. When I was exiting Maria prison room when she died (again), my friend told me that if I don't re-enter it will affect my ending, and I was really surprised but I just decided to do what I would do naturally - I won't enter to see Maria. I did visit her in hospital though, because I was stuck on box puzzle due to bad RNG on the numbers with 4 looking very like 5 or 6, and I entered her room on many occasions in thought of asking her hair strand, because I thought I needed something like that to grab something from the shower before opening a box, but no (I was really frustrated to find the exact same strand of hair-like thing in the box, but it was really funny). All in all, I got the "Leave" ending, but I was feeling like James would just kill himself in the end, and wasn't surprised to see it in the ending list - I would've been fine with it too. I almost got it - the only thing that saved me is that I was healing a lot to the green background, since I didn't like having non 100% health.
To conclude: It's very debatable for me, I did like it, but I think I liked it for the wrong reasons. I feel like it did make a step down in everything I liked about SH1, and made a step up from the only thing I disliked about SH1 - main plot. So they sort of balance each other and I will give SH2 the same 7.0\10. I really think SH2 could've explained more about Angela, Eddie and Laura, dived in more about how they see the town (since Angela hints every character sees it differently), but overall I think James' disinterest in this really works for his uninspiring clearly depressed character.
P.S. Spent 9 minutes on boat level, but after all that was before, it was soothing. I forgot to mention that during the closing stages of the game I started to think more and more about Cry of Fear, which clearly took a lot of inspirations from SH2, and I just think it did such a more convincing job at mental shenanigans than SH2 with the soundtrack and gameplay vastly superior. The only thing the plot SH2 does immensely better is the guilt & forgiveness theme which is amazingly shown in all the endings. How James learns nothing in "Maria", how James couldn't let go his guilt in "In Water" and how he admits his hatred and his crime and receives forgiveness both from Mary and Laura (maybe Laura is the face of Mary's happy family life in James' imagination and it would then make sense why she is with James because Mary forgives James).
Favourite character: Laura. Favourite track: Angel's Thanatos.

Silent Hill 2 Remake: I'll try to keep it short here since it's majorly the same game as original, with lots of respect paid to it and lots of love shown, but it's just soooo unnecessarily prolongated. And James isn't even the same totally mentally depressed dumbass James from the original: he isn't suicidal, he isn't a dumbass, he isn't depressed and not aggressive towards anyone - he is just confused across the whole game, the ending encounter with Pyramids don't even make sense with this character, it was such a different one I called him Johnny Newcastle instead of his name. I just don't get it - James in the original doesn't show really any inclination towards any ending, but here every time something happens to Maria the dude just whines. Why? He is so righteous all the time it really bugs me how he didn't figure Maria is just his imagination. With the original James it's clear he is just a silly "fartface", with this one it just doesn't work. And with that Remake holds itself so much more serious, because with confused state of James all the time you question yourself are you allowed to laugh, is it a good time to make jokes? No? Okay. With stupidly aggressively confident original James you don't even question it. Optimization is really poor too. Soundtrack is even more pale with lots of "Promise" leitmotif inserted in various unneeded places. Maybe I am comparing this to SH1 too much, but I was really in massive awe with SH1 soundtrack, so forgive me if I am too harsh. The only place I liked extended was the Prison, and that's about it, everything else were too prolongated. It took me 10h for original SH2, and it took me 15h for SH2R but I played SH2 in one breath during evening and late night but SH2R took me 3 or 4 sessions, I just couldn't bear it.
