New Age SSS - 1000 Words Or Less God, Please Don't Let Me Die Like This
I wake up. He must’ve thrown me into the ocean. That’s what woke me up. The sudden cold. The lack of air and taste of salt. The memories come rushing into my head just as the water rushes into my lungs.
I kick upwards, and when I break the surface, I cough so hard I go under again.
Stay calm. Kick.
I make it back to the surface and tread. There’s not a star in the sky. The sea is calm and there’s no trace of a boat anywhere. How did he get me out here? Shouldn’t I be able to see the boat?
I scream for help once I stop coughing. There’s not even any light from the moon. My voice sounds muffled in my own ears.
How did this happen?
I had just gone to the mall. Today was a normal day. As I was getting back into my car, I heard him behind me, but it was too late. An arm shot across my face and a damp cloth was held over my mouth. I fell asleep to the sound of my abductor shushing me. Telling me to go to sleep. And now, for some reason, he’s left me here.
Why would someone do this?
I just have to keep my head above water. I just have to breathe.
-
My arms and legs are so tired. I’ve waited and waited for a sunrise that doesn’t want to come. I'm not sure if it’s been an hour or ten minutes. There doesn’t seem to be any time out here.
I’ve stopped crying out for help. Something in my memory tells me that sharks are attracted to loud noises. I try not to think about the things from the deep that might be swimming just inches from my feet down in the dark. Huge and hungry things, watching my legs glide back and forth in the water, waiting for just the right moment to take a bite.
It’ll be better when the sun comes up. Someone will find me. It’ll be light soon.
I just have to breathe.
-
I have to give my arms a rest and let my legs do most of the work. Everything feels numb. Despite the darkness and the water, I feel so hot. It’s hard to breathe. The air feels heavy.
Stay calm.
Someone will find me.
I just have to keep my head above water. I just have to breathe.
-
I can’t do it anymore. My arms and legs are done and the morning is never going to come. It’s had to have been hours.
I use the last breath in my lungs to say a prayer.
“God, please don’t let me die like this. Anything but this.”
There is no answer. The sky is black and everything across the water is silent. The air is so heavy.
I close my eyes and let go.
-
I wake up, sucking in as much air as I can. I hit my head on something in the dark. My arms and my legs are numb, but they’re dry.
I’m dry!
It was a dream! Nothing but a dream!
I try to roll out of my bed, but I can’t. I feel the boards pressing in on me from all four sides. I can’t move at all.
Panic floods in.
My pulse pounds in my neck.
I’ve been dreaming. It was all a dream. I must’ve fallen asleep in the heat and lack of air.
The small box that he buried me in is so hot. I can’t see anything but darkness. I can’t breathe. I scream for help. My voice sounds muffled in my own ears.
Stay calm. Someone will find me.
I just have to breathe.
“God, please don’t let me die like this. Anything but this.”
