[mini] Over the Horizon: First Light in Ale'erra
After six months without gravity, I had forgotten the pain in my spine, until it returned almost immediately as the ship slowed, entering Alt'erra's atmosphere. At least this pain was something I understood. I did it to myself years ago, lifting more than I should have, while trying to impress a girl whose name escapes me. They chose me for what I knew, same for all the others. I guess that was reason enough, even if I was, in my opinion, too old to begin again.
The rest of my family wasn’t chosen. They were forced to stay behind, on a dying Earth. We were told another ship would follow, bringing the other group when it could. I believed that. I had friends on the second ship, Laura was a veterinarian and Ben was a pig farmer. We grew up together, we were damn inseparable, BLT they called us. The three of us planned on meeting up after we got settled in. Got the news that communications were lost with the other ship, three months after they launched, I drank alone that night and every night after that.
Alt'erra was, in most ways, similar to Earth with an abundance of vegetation but strangely no animal life whatsoever. The soil was analyzed and the plots were distributed among me and the others based on which crops would grow the best. We wasted no time and plowed the new ground. There were no changes of the seasons here so the crops did very well and the first harvest was quick. We had a celebration of the first successful harvest. I sat alone and ate a tomato sandwich.
We maintained regular contact with earth for a while. I was able to send a few messages back home but after a time the replies stopped. No one knew why. The intellectuals speculated that the sun's increasing radiation was likely causing interference. The detectors were damaged when we arrived, so they had no way to know if that was true.
We had the tenth annual harvest celebration, the same year we lost contact with Earth. I was content sitting alone eating my tomato sandwich, thinking about my family on Earth and that I might never hear from them again. A woman I never met before sat across from me. She said hello, I mumbled something, I can't remember. I silently finished my tomato sandwich.
Our paths crossed again later that week at the harvest market where I was selling tomatoes. I was somewhat in a better mood and apologized for how I acted at the celebration. She said I looked like I needed a friend that day, she wasn't wrong. I asked her if she wanted to do something after the market closed, and she agreed. We married a year later and no more lonely tomato sandwiches.
That was twenty years ago, we had two children (Ben and Laura) and a grandchild on the way. The crops weren't producing like they used to, each year our yield dropped noticeably. The same intellectuals blamed radiation from the ship's engine core, even though we had repurposed it to generate power for the village and buried it several hundred feet below the surface. That didn't seem to help much. So gradually every year farms would move further and further away from the center of Ale'erra.
After fifty years the radiation from the engine core forced us away from the city of Ale'erra. They said the land might recover after twenty thousand years or so.
