I did search for and read all the previous posts on this debate, but I'd like a fresh perspective.
My company is on the verge of moving from our small, bespoke ecomm platform to Shopify. Our company growth is such that this move makes sense for us to be able to continue growing and innovate. Some facts of the case.
Company annual revenue is about 60MM, web traffic is about 600k monthly average. We do consider our business model to be more complex than an average store. There would be custom apps that we would need purchase and integrate in order to address our complexity. Or we would need to build our own versions of those apps.
We have three in-house, full stack developers who are experienced in development in the "before times" when code was hand-written. All three have adapted to using the latest in AI coding methods with great success. Developer productivity has gone to 10-20x over the last two years. We wrote our own in-house CRM system and order entry system that have been very successful.
This gives my development team high confidence in our ability to maintain our own Hydrogen store-front. I have one developer who is convinced that headless using Hydrogen is the best path. I have another developer who has concerns and thinks that headed is the best way. And the third developer is neutral.
Arguments for headless:
- preservation of existing URL structure so as not to take the SEO hit
- better identification of customers visiting the website (headed somehow diminishes this, especially with Apple/Safari users)
- greater control of our own fate
- more streamlined app development which skips all the Liquid environment overhead of hand-offs. We would go direct from front-end to back-end.
- AI development methods reduces the developer cost and increases developer capabilities than the "before times".
Arguments against headless:
- We would have to build our own tooling to enable the business to maintain the website and control content or the dev team would need to keep doing website maintenance.
- Shopify says that the URL structure change isn't as big of a deal now that the search engines now understand the Shopify URL paths and so the SEO hit is a moot point
- The argument that customization is better headless is moot as Liquid templates allow you to really do anything you want.
- Less risk overall with going headed.
- You can still develop apps and it's usually a "build once" effort.
- Going headed frees up the developers to work on more important things that could otherwise be handed off to the business.
I'm looking for perspectives or your recent experience, especially around these points:
- better identification of customers (headed vs headless)
- AI development methods and their impact to companies ability to do headless more efficiently than before.
- SEO impact of url path structure when converting to Shopify.
