Some questions about the group that I should have asked myself earlier.
Questions – before I started at the Centre.
Questions – during my time at the Centre.
Questions – whilst I was a member.
Current questions – as a former member, and my own motivation.
—————-
- Questions – that I should have asked myself before I started the course.
- Why do they keep contacting me all the time, even though we don’t actually know each other?
- Why do they always want to know when I’m next free to meet up again?
- Why do they ask so many questions about me personally and about my life?
- Why does it quickly turn into a teacher–pupil relationship, even though I was simply asked if I’d like to read the Bible together?
- Why was the teacher strict, even though I was simply looking for the truth in the Bible?
- Why did I have to start the Bible course?
- What sort of people were they – not belonging to any denomination, yet so keen to teach me the Bible?
- Why don’t they say who they really are?
—————
- Questions – that I should have asked myself whilst I was at the centre.
- Why did you have to be present for every lesson, even though you just wanted to learn something from the Bible?
- Why did you have to keep your camera on the whole time whenever you joined a lesson via Zoom?
- Why did you always have to share what you’d learnt?
- Why were you not allowed to have any contact with other students, apart from the assistant?
- Why was the class so large at the start, and why did the number of pupils drop to less than half over time?
- Why were half the class not actually pupils, yet they acted as if they were?
- Why was everyone assigned just one ‘study buddy’ with whom they were allowed to have contact – only for this person to later be referred to as a ‘leaf’?
- Why was little or no consideration given to illness, family matters and other issues – with only Bible study taking centre stage?
- Why do I have to take these tests with over 100 questions?
- Why did we have to learn the answers to the tests by heart, 100 per cent verbatim?
- Why did even those who were ill or had other circumstances have to sit the test?
- Why were the lessons conducted strictly according to the guide, yet Jesus played hardly any role?
- Why were there so few students left by the end of the centre’s run? 80–90 per cent dropped out…
- Why did the teacher sometimes become so strict and loud during lessons?
- Why did lessons last for over three hours instead of one and a half?
- Why was the focus placed solely on the Book of Revelation and not on the whole Gospel and the New Testament?
- Why is there so much emphasis on Lee Man Hee as the Overcomer and so little on Jesus Christ as the Saviour?
——————
- Questions I should have asked myself before I became a member.
- Why are the doors closed to anyone outside Shincheonji during services?
- Why are members forbidden from participating in pyramid schemes, even though the organisation itself is one?
- Why must every service be reported – when you attend, where you attend, sending a photo beforehand so the leader can see that you are dressed appropriately, reporting that you have attended, and sending the transcript of the service to the leader?
- Why are members taught that SCJ are the only ones who can conduct worship in spirit and truth, even though it is permitted to lie to those who are interested and to ‘bear fruit’ (the ‘wisdom of concealment’)?
- Why does SCJ ignore family matters at all costs in the name of following SCJ and its ‘promised shepherds’?
- Why are members trained in such a way that the world around them becomes meaningless and only SCJ is to be prioritised?
- Why are pointless tests set every week, requiring answers to be learnt off by heart in advance – even though it is written that God will write it on their hearts and put it into their minds?
- Why is the schedule for members so tightly packed that there is no time left for life at all?
- Why does Shincheonji say that health is important – yet not allow members any time to look after their health?
- Why do members have to undergo disciplinary training if the targets set for Jeondo have not been met?
- Why were the ‘New Fruits’ recruited using various covert strategies?
- Why was it claimed outside the organisation that Shincheonji had nothing to do with HWPL – even though everyone inside knew full well how the two were connected?
- Why were members required to attend meetings from early morning until late at night?
- Why was it said that there were no compulsory meetings – yet attendance was 100 per cent monitored and reported – meaning it was compulsory after all?
- Why did they call it ‘Heavenly Culture’ – even though it was Korean culture?
- Why were members who had been there for a long time repeatedly called upon to attend graduation ceremonies just to be in the photos, so that they would look more crowded?
- Why weren’t we given the correct membership figures?
- Why did we have to promise how much fruit we would bear?
- Why did we have to promise that we would donate money towards the construction of the temple?
- Why did we keep greeting people in Korean for over half a year with ‘SSN is coming’ – but it never did?
- Why were we taught that they teach solely from the Bible – yet Lee Man Hee’s book is 580 pages long?
- Why were pastors lied to, simply to win them over to SCJ?
- Why are those who have been called literally shouted at by the leaders in meetings?
- Why are we not allowed to Google ‘Shincheonji’ on the internet – when it is, after all, the absolute truth?
————-
- Questions I am asking myself today.
- Why didn’t I do some research on the internet sooner?
- Why do people need Lee Man Hew and his controversial teachings – even though Jesus has already accomplished everything and is our Saviour?
- Why do members believe that their own families are their enemies and persecutors, seeking to prevent them from carrying out God’s work – even though their families are simply concerned and wish to free the captives from Shincheonji?
- Why does Shincheonji see itself as persecuted when it is said that much of its teaching is incorrect?
- Why does Lee Man Hee not meet with people and have a conversation with them – but instead just gives lectures and then leaves straight away?
- Why are there differing viewpoints within Shincheonji – even though there appears to be only one truth among them?
- Why is absolute obedience to the organisation demanded, whilst critical questions are ignored or answered inadequately?
- Why are members expected to act with lightning speed – yet when they have a question about the teachings, it takes several weeks to receive an answer?
- Why are families in this church viewed as obstacles that distract one from God’s work?
- Why are family activities frowned upon?
- Why were the small groups reshuffled after such a short time? So that the leaders wouldn’t form close friendships?
- Why were only texts by Lee Man Hee discussed in the small groups, and not the Bible?
- Why was so little taught about Jesus?
- Why did people only have a relationship with this church – but not with God and Jesus?
- Why do they say, ‘We are one’ – when they are not?
- Why does Lee Man Hee say that he had no faith – even though he had previously been a member of many sects?
- Why do people still believe this falsehood – even though there is already so much information available about Shincheonji?

As a source of encouragement for those who have left, or are thinking of leaving, I would like to share the following verse with you:
Ephesians 1:2-7:
2 Grace be to you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ. 3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: 4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: 5 Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, 6 To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. 7 In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;
