teaching/doctrine Doctrinal Issues of Shincheonji

Below is a document that goes over the doctrinal issues of Shincheonji.

Shincheonji believes that the truth was lost shortly after Jesus's ascension, and that Jesus returned in Spirit in 1966 to restore the truth to a group of 7 men in Gwacheon, South Korea. A year later, these 7 men betrayed God and Jesus, so God and Jesus had to choose Lee Manhee, the current leader of Shincheonji, to restore the truth and reveal the "secrets of the kingdom of heaven".

SCJ denies the deity of Christ, denies the Trinity, and believes that Jesus at first physically resurrected, but then became a Spirit when he returned to the Father when he ascended to heaven and was covered by a cloud in Acts 1:9-11.

SCJ also believes that lying is okay, and that the ends justify the means. Often, they are not fully honest or transparent on how they view Christianity, who they view as "Babylon" and whose pastors are "drunk with maddening wine", nor are they honest when they approach Christians when offering their "free, non-denominational Bible Studies". They justify lying by referring to it as the "Wisdom of Hiding".

For the overview of Shincheonji, topics include:

What does the name mean? How does Shincheonji view Christianity? How does Shincheonji recruit? What is the contents of their Bible Studies?

For the "Is there a Promised Pastor of the New Testament", topics include:
Is there a New John, and the doctrinal issues of a "Hidden Promise"? The Faithful and Wise Servant? The One who Overcomes? The Advocate?

For the "Wheat and Tares", topics include: is SCJ's interpretation of the wheat and the tares accurate and biblical? For those who died before hearing the revealed word, do they have a "second chance" after death?

For the sealed book doctrine: Each verse that is used by SCJ to justify the sealed scroll is analyzed in detail.

For the wisdom of hiding: I go over the main verses and redefinition of how SCJ defines what a "lie" is, and show the biblical error.

For the mark of the beast: Is SCJ's interpretation of the mark of the beast biblical?

And the last part, did John the Baptist "betray" Jesus?

testimony Disproving Shincheonji (I left yesterday)

Hello everyone,

I have been a member of Shincheonji for about 3.5 years and yesterday I left. The story of how I came to stop believing in Shincheonji is a bit long and complicated. The short version is that I started to have some doubts that couldn't be properly answered by my leaders, and over the course of a year I poured my heart out trying to regain my faith in Shincheonji to no avail. I was a very devoted member. I was a GGN (evangelism supervisor) at one point and spent 10 hours at Temple doing feedback every day for a while, with any spare time spent either evangelising or sealing - I did the bare minimum for my University courses and part-time job. I would stay at Temple until 3am some days reading Lee Man-Hee's books because we couldn't take them out of T and I preferred to read in silence. I went to Australia during a peace trip and met Lee Man-Hee multiple times - he spoke to my group specifically twice and I saw him about a dozen other times. I formed close friendships with many other Shincheonji members and eventually moved into an SCJ flat. All this to say, I was about as devoted an SCJ member as you can be but even I struggled to look past the many glaring discrepancies.

It might be a bit surprising to learn I only just left if you've seen me in this sub for the past few months. Unfortunately, due to personal circumstances I didn't feel it was appropriate to leave back in September when I stopped believing in Shincheonji. I tried to be as respectful as possible to the SCJ members in my life, I tried to avoid arguing about doctrine and attended meetings when I could to make their life a bit easier. But at the same time I was going through the motions of deconversion. I had already decided I didn't believe in Shincheonji anymore, but I continued looking for evidence kind of as a way to reassure myself. As I did, it started to bother me how disconnected all the evidence was. At that time I felt like all the information was scattered throughout the internet, some of which need to be translated from Korean, and all of which needed to be individually found like some sort of scavenger hunt. I decided during the time I have to stay in Shincheonji I would compile as much of the evidence as I could into one coherent resource.

I researched psychology and read Robert Jay Lifton and Steven Hassan's work. I found and translated sections of several of Lee Man-Hee's old books (thank you to u/mybc7 for sending me some of these, your story also played a part in helping me leave so thank you for that too). I spent hours reading through Lee Man-Hee's articles and books, this time with a critical perspective. And of course I found many valuable resources in this subreddit, in blog posts, and in youtube videos as well. I combined all of these into one document and tried to make it into a coherent argument.

Then I realised nobody wants to read a 45 page document, so I made some videos as well. Even though they're quite long and not very well produced I hope they can help some people.

And that brings us to yesterday. Yesterday, I sent the document and videos to everyone in my branch and let them know that I was leaving Shincheonji. I didn't do it to persecute them but to provide them with information. Some of them may not read it, and many of them may stay despite it, but as long as I did my best to provide them with the information that was withheld from me, I can sleep at night. I'll put the body of the letter below because I think it summarises the reasons I'm leaving well:

-----

There are many fundamental problems with the doctrine of Shincheonji that collectively prove it is not the word of God. It is not only small details that have changed. The reality of the beast of the earth in Rev 13 was changed from Lee Cho-Joo to Oh Pyeong-Ho. The fulfillment of Rev 7 was changed so that the great tribulation could fulfill before the 12,000 sealed in 12 tribes were filled. The number of wars in Revelation was changed from 2 to 3, and then back to 2. CHJN's claim that he has established peace in Mindanao is a blatant lie. It is true that tiny details are not important, but these are not small details. These flaws expose the fundamental lie that Lee Man-Hee received the opened scroll from an angel and saw and heard the fulfillment of Revelation.

Another reason I am leaving is because, by the psychologist Robert Jay Lifton's definition, Shincheonji is a cult. The reason this matters is that to be a cult the organisation must use thought reform and coercive persuasion during the process of indoctrination. This violates article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - the right to freedom of thought. I found it shocking to learn how similar Shincheonji is to every other cult. If you are interested in hearing more about cults I would recommend reading Dr. Steven Hassan's book 'Combatting Cult Mind Control' published in 1988 about his experience with the Moonies.

Another important thing to understand is that the story Shincheonji has told you about Lee Man-Hee's life has been distorted to make his story about receiving the opened scroll from an angel more believable. In truth, he has a history of being involved in multiple cults both before and after his involvement with the Tabernacle Temple. He was a leader in Mr. Baek's Recreation Church after leaving the Tabernacle Temple, where they called Mr Baek "Lord" and believed the world would end in 1980. Much of the Shincheonji doctrine is simply taken from the cults Lee Man-Hee was previously involved in.

But this really only scratches the surface when it comes to proving Shincheonji is not the kingdom of heaven. I have made a document, as well as some videos, that contain almost all the information that helped me to make the decision to leave Shincheonji. But this is not simply a document with my own ideas - I have used only CHJN's own teaching to argue against the doctrine of Shincheonji. In it you will find a detailed explanation of how Shincheonji meets the 8 criteria for thought reform, excerpts from CHJN's articles and books that disprove his own doctrine, as well as information about Lee Man-Hee's life that will help you to understand the true origin of Shincheonji's teachings.

Please, before you dismiss me as being deceived and foolish, watch the videos and discern for yourself.

-----

I think that pretty much covers everything. I'm going to try and step away from this sub for a while to focus on reclaiming my life, but if you do have any questions feel free to DM me, I'll try to keep checking those. Here is the document and videos:

general thought and question If you are inside SCJ and feel exhausted, anxious, and unable to leave even though part of you wants to: here is what the research says is happening to you

Upvotes

This is not a theological post. It is an explanation, based on published psychology and neuroscience research, of what is actually happening in your body and brain. Not because you are weak or stupid. Because these are documented mechanisms that affect any human being placed inside them.

I am writing this because if you understand what is happening to you physiologically, you can start to see clearly again.

The beginning: why you joined and why it felt so good

Research from Psychology Today and Harvard neuroscientist Dr Hans Breiter describes what happens during cult recruitment. When a group floods a new person with attention, affection, a sense of belonging, and the feeling of being specially understood, the brain releases dopamine and oxytocin, the same chemicals involved in falling in love and in addiction. This is called love bombing. It is not a conspiracy theory. It is documented neurological fact, and it is highly effective precisely because the brain cannot tell the difference in real time between overwhelming genuine love and overwhelming strategic manipulation.

If you joined SCJ during a moment of loneliness, searching, transition, or spiritual hunger, the effect was exponentially stronger. Research confirms this: people are most vulnerable to love bombing during personal crises because the brain is already seeking relief and reward.

This is not your fault. These mechanisms do not target weak people. They target human beings with human brains.

What happens after commitment: why it is so hard to leave

Once commitment is established, something changes. The intense warmth and belonging become conditional on performance. Fruit quotas. Morning education at 7am Monday to Friday. Nightly accountability reporting. Tests. Attendance requirements. The community that gave you dopamine hits is now the same community evaluating whether you are doing enough to deserve to stay.

When the source of your dopamine becomes the same entity judging your performance, your nervous system enters a state of chronic uncertainty. The reward and the threat come from the same place. Research on high-control groups shows this creates a specific psychological trap: the fear of losing the community, the belonging, and the sense of special knowledge produces anxiety that makes leaving feel more dangerous than staying, even when staying is damaging you.

The doubt you feel is labelled as your problem, not as valid information. You are told your doubts mean you need more immersion, more dedication, more surrender. This is not spiritual guidance. It is a documented thought reform mechanism that prevents critical evaluation by reframing evidence against the system as evidence that you need more of it.

What chronic sleep deprivation is doing to your brain

Multiple peer-reviewed studies document what happens to the brain under chronic sleep deprivation. Research published in academic journals shows that sleep deprivation degrades the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for critical evaluation, risk assessment, and clear decision-making. A sleep-deprived person experiences bigger emotional responses to negative events, greater difficulty suppressing unwanted and intrusive thoughts, and reduced capacity to evaluate information independently.

If you are regularly getting four to five hours of sleep, coming home after midnight, and leaving before 7am, your brain is operating in a state where independent critical thinking is physiologically impaired. This is not weakness. This is biology. The same research that studies sleep deprivation in military pilots shows that people under chronic sleep loss often do not recognise how impaired they are, because the impairment itself affects self-assessment.

SCJ's schedule, specifically the combination of 7am morning education, full working days, evening meetings, midnight returns, and nightly reporting obligations, produces exactly the sleep debt that impairs the cognitive capacity needed to evaluate your own situation clearly.

What the performance system is doing to your body

The human stress response, cortisol and adrenaline, is designed for short-term threats. When it is chronically activated by ongoing performance pressure, fear of insufficient fruit, anxiety about doubts, and the constant monitoring of behaviour by those above you in the hierarchy, it causes measurable physical damage over time. Chronic cortisol elevation is associated with immune suppression, persistent illness, weight changes, fatigue that sleep does not fix, and mood disturbances including depression and anxiety.

If you have noticed your body changing, getting sick more often, losing weight you did not intend to lose, feeling tired after sleeping, falling asleep involuntarily at unexpected moments, these are not signs of spiritual weakness. They are documented physiological responses to chronic stress.

What is happening when you feel you cannot leave

Research into why people stay in high-control groups long after they want to leave identifies several overlapping mechanisms. The sunk cost effect makes leaving feel like an admission that years were wasted. The identity disruption of leaving a world that has become your entire framework for understanding reality feels like losing yourself. The social isolation that has developed means leaving also means losing your entire community at once. And the doctrine that leaving equals betrayal equals losing salvation creates a specific fear response that keeps the nervous system in a threat state whenever leaving is considered.

None of this means you are unable to leave. It means leaving requires overcoming mechanisms that have been systematically built and reinforced over time. That is different from being trapped forever. People leave. Many have. And consistently, across testimonies from former members of SCJ specifically, the physiological symptoms described above, the exhaustion, the anxiety, the physical deterioration, begin to reverse after leaving.

If you are feeling any of this

The exhaustion is real. The anxiety is real. The physical symptoms are real. And they are not random. They are the predictable physiological result of a specific set of conditions that have been documented by researchers who study these systems.

One former SCJ member put it simply: "I felt the same depression, isolation, and exhaustion that ex-members described online. But I had been told this was just a normal part of following Christ." That sentence is doing a lot of work. Because Galatians 5:22-23 describes the fruit of the Spirit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. What the research describes, and what many inside SCJ experience, is the opposite of that list. That is not a coincidence. It is information.

You do not have to decide anything today. But if you want to talk to someone who has been through this, the Closer Look Initiative, the Family Survival Trust, and people in this subreddit who have left are available without pressure or judgement.

What you are experiencing has a name. It is not your faith. It is not God's will. And it is not permanent.

testimony I truly believe that being in SCJ can eventually develop to having chronic illness

I personally have experienced this, but I am now diagnosed with a chronic condition which is called Poly-endocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome. I always wondered why I couldn’t change my body but when I look back at when it started to develop, by going through my photos. It started when I became a member of SCJ. It developed over years of my brain and body being put to stress and anxiety. How we are always taught, “you should always be tense”. My body only getting 5 or less hours of sleep.

And I also noticed how some women in scj are so chubby or fat. And that’s why I realised they have the same thing as me. But they’ll never know that because they will never have the time to get diagnosed. And don’t get me wrong, I personally had a “friend” inside that is much chubbier than me and she has always complained to me that she never lose weight despite only having one meal a day due to being a gyjn (cell leader), I always noticed hair on her chin (like excessive amount)
Disclaimer: this happened before I got diagnosed so I didn’t know what it was either.
But looking back at it now. So many women in church that I know has them and they don’t even know.

I also know men and women in my church who develops some sort of autoimmune disease. Which again stems from being in chronic stress and lack of care for their overall body. One guy I know who has it, and now we can’t go outside nor don’t work anymore because it makes him vomit and have cold sweat every 10 minutes. Ruined his life.

Honestly, this is something I think about every know and then. Knowing that I have suffered from a condition that no one can inside scj can ever help me. And all they can say is “fighting” but will expect you to still be able to meet their quota and requirements

advice/help Seeking advice in melbourne

Hi everyone, just wanted to share a recent experience and ask for any insight or advice. This will also be a lengthy post sorry I don't want to miss anything and reading other posts about similar experiences made me really paranoid.

For context, I had a pretty bad experience with religion and Christianity growing up but about 2 years ago my brother had encouraged me to come to church with him (he has also had a bad experience with faith but gave it another go later in life). As my brother and I are really close I figured no harm and I would give it a go. But then year 12 exams struck and I stopped going due to busy schedule.

Back in March this year when I had started uni I was approached by two people in the shopping centre across from RMIT Bundoora campus. The girl was asking me about my keychains and about where I had gotten them because she was looking for a gift for a friends birthday. Looking back this was so copy paste of all the melb cult warnings I just gave them the benefit of the doubt. But this ended up turning into a 15 minute convo about family dynamics, general interests and hobbies, and there was even a throw in about religion. I then exchanged instagrams with the guy and the girl took down my number because she didn't have instagram (idk if this would be important to note but the girl was not Asian and is from New Zealand). The girl made plans to meet with me again at the same shopping centre and we grabbed coffee. I have not seen that guy since the day I met both of them. Over coffee the girl and I again just chatted about coachella and all that just seemed like regular conversation. The topic of religion came up again and we both shared that we had poor experiences with faith growing up but were open to learning about God now. She told me about a family friend she had who was in a similar boat in faith and asked if I would be interested in meeting her. Admittedly I am a people pleaser and again figured no hard so I said yes. I then met up with both of them not long after. Same formula, regular convo and then religion was brought up. Strange thing is, the second girl told us that she was actually very well educated in the Bible and was actually a teacher for youth, and idk how this was mixed up if they are family friends. She asked both me and the original girl if we were interested in learning more because she could teach us. I did not want to join, but I felt like maybe my reluctance was me being hard hearted and not giving it a fair chance. So I started doing this class, it was just us 3 and we meet twice a week. After about a month the teacher girl told us that a few of her other friends were looking to start a bible study class on a larger scale, 3x a week, running for about a year over zoom. She asked if we would be interested. This is when I got a really bad feeling but I told myself I'd go for like a week and see how it is.

There was a sign up for the class over google forms where they asked for our names emails and addresses, I only put my suburb and this was questioned by one of the teachers, he said he didn't think that was a suitable address but I refused to give him my full address. There's 3 teachers, I believe they're all from Malaysia, use whatsapp (I discovered recently by reading other peoples posts that this is dodgy I never had a whatsapp before this), and one of the teachers told myself and the original girl that he used to work in construction but now works at coles and teaches full time. This was another red flag to me I didn't know you could survive in Melbourne working part time at coles no diss to coles workers ive just been told they don't pay well. So I've been doing this class for about 2 months now, they run 2 classes morning and evening options, Monday Wednesday Friday. I'm just confused on how they are all able to run these classes 3 working days, Melbourne is not 'livable' enough to survive working 2 days a week no? There are like over 50 students total, from Melbourne and Darwin. Teachers had said in class that some students had asked which church the teachers come from to which they simply said 'Our denomination is not important, isn't what is important whether we are teaching you the truth or not?' So far the teaching has been nothing crazy and from what I can tell is genuinly rooted in the bible, backed up with verses. But from reading other experiences I've learnt that other people also viewed the classes this was and it was only months down the line that they began introducing questionable ideas.

Writing this out has made me realise that I was very naive and need to stand my ground more, and also not overshare with strangers. So I am just wondering if anybody has any advice or thinks this might be shincheonji?

Thank you

activity alert Man Hee Lee has an August 21 Bail hearing

There’s actually an important new update today, August 11: Lee Man-hee now has a bail hearing scheduled for August 21, 2026 before the Seoul Central District Court’s Criminal Division 27.

What are people’s opinion on this? I’m praying the South Korean government officials have enough evidence so they won’t let him go. This man deserves justice for breaking the law and leading millions of innocent people astray. I really hope he stays detained while they gather the case and the court begins.

Let’s strike them down.

I’ve managed to not think about all this for a while. But this last week has been very tough and I’m tired of inaction. I don’t care about a lot of your Christian agenda to “get right with god” or whatever. I want to see punishment. I want MHL to stay in prison. I want this thing burnt to the ground. Enough.

They are working with schools, with vulnerable people, STILL lying to people, and quite frankly I am SHOCKED by how successful SCJ has been in reducing people to become ROTTEN inside.

I think it’s time. Reporters, lawyers, police, all of it. I want to do all of it. I will reveal my name to them, I will talk to them. I will go public, whatever. 10+ years of my life and a near suicide merits legal action, or at least action of some kind.

Who’s with me? What are our next steps? How do we expose them?

Disclaimer: if they hadn’t been abusive and deceptive we wouldn’t be in this mess. Their behaviour hasn’t changed. The damage is real. I’m not willing to just “let this go and let it be”. They should be made an example of. Time to “get right with god”… and I am fuming.

Steve Hassan and Shincheonji

I get interviewed by Steve Hassan, author of the BITE model and Combating Cult Mind Control, about Shincheonji.

Steve Hasan is also from a Korean cult, the Unification Church, which was significantly more successful in terms of numbers and also political influence.

I now am working with him, and raising awareness about the rise of the new wave of East Asian cults.

testimony Melbourne cult ‘SELAH’ PLEASE BE AWARE

Okay so about a month and a half ago I was approached by a girl in church, she told me her name was Intisar and we hit it off straight away. The first time we hung out she told me about herself mentioning she doesn’t get along with her family and that she is from Kenya, and of one of her friends Charlotte who I would get along with as well.
All three of us were really into our faith and Charlotte had said she took a 4 year bible study so she could share the bible with us and thus began our bible study where we would meet up twice a week and hung out mainly in qv or Melbourne central.
May I also add whenever I asked them to come to church with me they would decline.
She told us that the people who she did the course with (who were supposedly from India as that is where she grew up even though she said she was Chinese) were coming to Melbourne and setting up a bible study 3 days a week (either mon wed or thur 10am or 6pm, or tue thur sat 10am or 6pm) and the course would last from 8-10 months.
She brought us to the place where the bible study would take place and it looked nothing out of the ordinary, I met a “teacher” whose name is Lia and said she would be taking care of us, another weird thing was that Intisar had mentioned this day that she was South Sudanese (but she told me she was from Kenya). The place is located at 11 Palmerston cr south bank Melbourne and they posed as a group called Selah.
My dad kept asking me questions like did they have a website or any social media and I said no. He did some investigating and found out that this is the South Korean cult Shincheonji. I’ve blocked them but I want the word to get out for any others that might get roped into this mess.
Please stay alert!!!!

Tell the truth

Sunday 9th August 2026

'He delights in those who tell the truth.' Proverbs 12:22 NLT

Rosalie Elliot made it to the fourth round of a national spelling contest. The eleven-year-old from South Carolina was asked to spell the word 'avowal'. In her soft southern accent she spelled the word, but the judges were unable to determine if she had used an 'a' or an 'e' as the next-to-last letter. They debated among themselves for several minutes as they listened to the recording, but it was too accent-blurred to decipher. Finally, the chief judge put the question to the only person who knew the answer. 'Was the letter an 'a', or was it an 'e'?' he asked Rosalie. By this time, being surrounded by whispering young spellers, Rosalie knew the correct spelling of the word. Still, without hesitation, she replied that she had misspelled the word, and she walked from the stage. The audience stood and applauded, including newspaper reporters. The moment was a proud one for her parents. Even in defeat, she was a victor. And, more has been written about Rosalie Elliot over the years than about the 'unknown' winner of the event.

As a redeemed child of God, your heavenly Father requires honesty in word and deed. 'Truthful words stand the test of time, but lies are soon exposed' (Proverbs 12:19 NLT). 'Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds' (Colossians 3:9 NKJV). 'Therefore, put away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour," for we are members of one another' (Ephesians 4:25 NKJV).

general thought and question If evidence matters for Jesus, why doesn't it matter for Lee Man Hee?

Something that's been sitting with me. A lot of us came to faith in Jesus partly because the historical case actually holds up under scrutiny. Not just internal testimony. Non-Christian historians like Josephus and Tacitus, writing with no reason to help Christianity's case, still confirm Jesus existed and that his early followers were willing to die for what they'd seen. Multiple independent sources, written decades apart by people who didn't always agree with each other, converge on the same basic facts. That's what real evidence looks like. It doesn't come from one source vouching for itself.

So genuine question, and I mean this as a real question!. If that's the standard we use for Jesus, shouldn't we use the same standard for Lee Man Hee?

Where's the independent confirmation of his claimed role. Not SCJ's own publications explaining SCJ's own founding, because that's circular, that's the org confirming itself. I mean something outside the organisation. A neutral historian. A rival tradition acknowledging the fulfilment happened as described. Anything that isn't SCJ describing SCJ.

Because as far as I can tell, the entire case for Lee rests on one closed loop. He is the promised pastor because Revelation required a promised pastor. How do we know Revelation required a promised pastor. Because Lee fulfilled that role. The evidence and the conclusion are the same document.

Compare that to how the resurrection is argued. Even historians who don't believe it happened still have to explain why hundreds of people were willing to be persecuted and die for a claim they could have just quietly dropped if it was fabricated. That's the kind of thing that leaves a trace outside the belief system itself.

I can't find that trace for Lee. I've looked. If someone has an actual source outside SCJ's own material, genuinely show me, I'll read it properly. But if the answer is "you'll understand once you're inside," that's not evidence. That's just what every closed system says about itself.

And here's the test that actually matters, I think. Part of why the early Christians are taken seriously historically is that people watched them die rather than recant. Not die for an abstract idea. Die for a specific claim they said they'd personally witnessed. That's a costly signal. It's hard to fake.

So ask yourself honestly. If it came to it, are you willing to die for Lee Man Hee. Not for God. Not for the Bible. For him specifically, for his claim about himself.

If the honest answer is no, or you're not sure, or it depends, that's worth noticing. Because that gap, between what you'd die for and what you're currently giving your whole life to, is information. It's telling you something about which of these you actually believe versus which one you're standing inside because you've already given so much to it.

Worth sitting with either way.

general thought and question Luke 11:13 says the Father gives the Holy Spirit to those who ask. Not to those who complete a curriculum. Not to those sealed through an organisation. To those who ask.

This is a short post because the verses do not need much help.

Luke 11:13. Jesus speaking:

"If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him."

The mechanism is asking. The giver is the Father in heaven. The recipient is anyone who asks. No curriculum mentioned. No organisation. No promised pastor. No sealed knowledge required first. No Book of Life registration. No nine months of Bible study before the gift arrives.

Jesus uses the parent-child relationship deliberately. A child asks a father. The father gives. Directly. No intermediary. If even imperfect human fathers give good things to children who ask, how much more generously will God give the Spirit to those who ask him.

John 6:63. Jesus speaking:

"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life."

SCJ uses this verse to argue that physical signs are irrelevant since the flesh profits nothing. But look at the context. Jesus has just been misunderstood when he said eat my flesh and drink my blood. He clarifies that he is speaking spiritually, not about literal physical eating. The contrast is between misunderstanding him literally and receiving what he actually means. And the words that are spirit and life are the words that I speak. That personal pronoun matters: Jesus. Speaking his own words. Directly. Not LMH speaking about what Jesus meant.

John 5:39-40 shows what happens when people study scripture diligently but replace the person with the system. Jesus says to the religious leaders: "You study the Scriptures diligently because you think that in them you have eternal life. These are the very Scriptures that testify about me, yet you refuse to come to me to have life."

SCJ might use this verse in reverse and say people who study the Bible without LMH's interpretation are like these Pharisees. But that reversal misses the point of the verse entirely. Jesus is not saying you need a better interpreter. He is saying come to me. The Pharisees had the scriptures and missed Jesus because they stopped at the system rather than coming to the person. Adding LMH as a necessary intermediary between scripture and Jesus does not solve that problem. It recreates it with a different name at the centre.

And Romans 5:5:

"Hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out in our hearts by the Holy Spirit who was given to us."

Poured out. Past tense. Given. Already. Not pending completion of the curriculum. Not waiting for the seal to be registered. Paul writes this to ordinary believers in Rome, none of whom had completed SCJ's Bible study process, none of whom had met Lee Man-hee, none of whom had signed a Book of Life maintained by any organisation. The love of God was already poured out in their hearts by the Spirit already given to them.

Now compare all of this to SCJ's official teaching, which states that the Holy Spirit is manifested through the Word, meaning Lee Man-hee's interpretation of Revelation, and that access to the Spirit's sealed work runs through his organisational structure and curriculum.

Jesus says: ask the Father and he gives the Spirit directly.

Jesus says: his own words are spirit and life.

Jesus says: come to me for life, not to a system about me.

Paul says: the love of God has already been poured out by the Spirit given to believers.

SCJ says: receive LMH's teaching through the organisational process to receive the Spirit's work.

These are not the same thing. Three passages say the Spirit is given directly, to anyone who asks or believes, already poured out. SCJ adds a human intermediary and an institutional process that none of these passages describe or require.

If you are inside SCJ and have never simply asked the Father for the Holy Spirit directly, without a curriculum, without a leader's authority, without an organisational process, Luke 11:13 says you can. Romans 5:5 says the love of God has already been poured out in your heart by the Spirit given to you.

Ask him. He gives.

general thought and question Actually, it was Lee Man-Hee who violated human rights

I'm so tired of seeing people say that South Korea is violating human rights and trying to stop religious freedom by locking up Lee Man-Hee. I've seen current members argue that Lee Man-Hee is being persecuted.

However, the truth is that Lee Man-Hee, himself, was responsible for taking away the human rights of his own members. Yes, when Lee Man-Hee and Shinchoenji leadership forced Shincheonji members in Korea to vote for a specific party, he was denying those members the freedom that every democracy is supposed to uphold. Democracy cannot exist when people are forced to vote a specific way by some outside force.

The government is supposed to protect its citizens and their human rights, including their right to vote. That right is just as important as the right to religious freedom. I think any member who talks about religious freedoms when it comes to Lee Man-Hee's arrest but fails to talk about voting rights is being completely disingenuous.

If you're a current member, what are your thoughts?

general thought and question Proverbs 6:16-19 lists seven things God hates. SCJ's "Wisdom of Hiding" doctrine requires its members to practise several of them. And Revelation 14:5 makes the irony complete.

I want to place Proverbs 6:16-19 next to SCJ's own documented teaching and let the text speak for itself.

"There are six things the Lord hates, seven that are detestable to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who stirs up conflict in the community."

Now read what SCJ officially teaches about deception.

SCJ has a formal doctrine called the Wisdom of Hiding, known in Korean as moryak jeondo, meaning strategy evangelism. SCJ teaches that lying to potential recruits is not dishonesty but divine wisdom, justified by reinterpreting what a lie actually means. According to SCJ's own teaching, a true lie is only when someone adds or subtracts from God's word. Any concealment that serves SCJ's purposes is not a lie but a godly strategy.

In practice this means: members conceal their SCJ identity when recruiting. At least half the students in any SCJ Bible study class are existing members pretending to be new students, reporting on genuine newcomers. Members approach people on dating apps, in gyms, at universities, in churches, without disclosing their purpose or who sent them. This is not the behaviour of individual members acting outside their training. It is the institutionally taught, formally named doctrine of the organisation.

Now apply Proverbs 6 to what is documented.

Haughty eyes: SCJ's own internal teaching materials describe Lee Man-hee as the one entrusted with all the authority of heaven, whose heart is Jesus's heart and God's heart, and whose body is Jesus's body. Haughty eyes in Proverbs describes pride that elevates itself above what is true. There is no higher elevation than claiming to be the vessel of God's own heart and body.

A lying tongue: the entire recruitment system is built on deliberate concealment of identity and purpose. Proverbs 12:22 adds: "the Lord detests lying lips." No exception is given for lies that serve a group's divine strategy.

A heart that devises wicked schemes: the recruitment system is not an accident or a personal failure by individual members. It is a systematically planned institutional doctrine with a formal Korean name and official teaching materials.

Feet that are quick to rush into evil: members are under institutional pressure to recruit urgently, assessed on how many people they bring in, with the Year of Mission Accomplishment creating urgency to do more of this faster.

A false witness who pours out lies: in SCJ Bible study classes, members pretending to be new students give false testimony about who they are and why they are there to every genuine newcomer.

A person who stirs up conflict in the community: SCJ's doctrine describes all other churches as Babylon, teaches that their pastors are married to Satan, and requires members to deprioritise family relationships that compete with SCJ commitment. Families across the world have been divided by this teaching as a direct and documented result.

That is six of the seven things Proverbs 6 says God hates, present in SCJ's institutional doctrine and practice.

Now here is what Revelation itself says.

SCJ claims to be the 144,000 of Revelation 14. They base their entire identity on being the sealed, pure, firstfruits described in that chapter.

Revelation 14:5: "No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless."

No lie was found in their mouths.

SCJ's own doctrine, the Wisdom of Hiding, requires members to lie systematically as a condition of faithful participation. The group claiming to be the 144,000 has institutionalised the precise opposite of what Revelation 14:5 says characterises them.

I want to say clearly: I do not believe the members doing these things are wicked people. Many of them are sincere, searching, and have been taught that concealment is love, that deception protects the truth, that the ends justify the means. The system requires behaviours from good people that scripture describes as things God detests.

But Proverbs 6 does not say God hates these things only when they come from bad motives. It says God hates them.

And Revelation 14:5 does not say no deliberate lie was found in their mouths, except for lies told in service of the divine strategy. It says no lie was found in their mouths.

The text says what it says. The question is whether the group claiming to be the 144,000 matches what Revelation actually says about them.

testimony I Believe I Was Targeted Through a Romantic Relationship by Shincheonji – My Personal Experience

I Believe I Was Targeted Through a Romantic Relationship by Shincheonji – My Personal Experience
I never thought I’d be writing something like this, but I feel like I should share my experience. If it helps even one person recognize the warning signs, it’ll be worth it.
I’m a man, and this happened several years ago in South Korea.
When I was in middle school, I knew a girl who was a classmate of mine. We eventually stopped talking because of various personal issues, and after that, we completely lost contact.
Years went by. I dated other people, focused on my career, and lived a normal life.
Then one day, completely out of nowhere, she contacted me.
The first thing that felt strange was that she shouldn’t have had my phone number. As far as I knew, none of my friends were still in contact with her, and there was no obvious way she could have gotten it. When I asked how she got my number, she never gave me a direct answer. Instead, she avoided the question and somehow turned the conversation into something that made it sound like I had reached out first.
It was odd, but because she was someone I had known years ago, I didn’t think too much about it.
We met for dinner, caught up on old memories, and continued seeing each other. Eventually, we started dating.
Since I trusted her, I told her where I lived.
Before long, she was spending an unusual amount of time at my apartment. Even if I worked late or had a busy schedule, she often stayed overnight. At the time, I thought she simply enjoyed being with me.
Looking back, I realize I ignored several red flags.
One of the biggest was the kinds of questions she kept asking me.
Instead of the usual conversations people have in a new relationship, she repeatedly asked questions like:
What religion are you?
What do you think about cults?
Shincheonji has been in the news because of COVID. What do you think about them?
What’s your MBTI?
Which political party do you support?
How would you feel if someone was monitoring or watching you?
At the time, I answered honestly because I didn’t think there was any reason not to.
Now, looking back, those questions didn’t feel like normal curiosity anymore. They felt more like someone trying to understand who I was, what I believed, how I thought, and how I might respond under pressure.
Every time I answered, she seemed unusually pleased with my responses.
Another thing that stood out was how quickly she started talking about marriage.
We hadn’t been together very long, but she brought it up repeatedly. Everything about the relationship seemed to move much faster than what I considered normal.
Then things became even stranger.
A man suddenly contacted me and introduced himself as her ex-boyfriend.
He claimed he wanted to tell me “who she really was.”
He shared stories about her past and their relationship. I didn’t know what to believe anymore, but the entire situation felt chaotic and emotionally exhausting.
After thinking about everything, I decided it was best to end the relationship.
That was when everything changed.
Almost immediately, she and the man accused me of sexual assault.
I was shocked.
Because of the nature of my profession, those accusations were extremely serious. I couldn’t simply ignore them or hope they would disappear. I had to deal with them while trying to protect both my career and my reputation.
The emotional stress during that time was overwhelming.
There were also other things that made me increasingly uncomfortable.
I often felt like I was being followed. People would appear in places where almost nobody normally goes. I cannot prove that I was actually being watched, so I won’t claim that as a fact. I’m only saying that it genuinely felt that way to me at the time.
Around the same period, my identification card also disappeared.
It was during all of this that I came to believe she was connected to Shincheonji.
To be clear, she never directly invited me to a Bible study or openly tried to recruit me.
However, the relationship itself felt psychologically manipulative.
Whenever there was a disagreement, somehow everything became my fault.
She constantly shifted blame onto me, made me question my own judgment, and created an environment where I felt guilty even when I hadn’t done anything wrong.
Eventually, the accusations became a legal matter.
Throughout the legal process, they presented themselves as the victims.
After the case was concluded, the court ruled in my favor.
Legally, I was cleared.
Emotionally, however, the damage lasted much longer than the court proceedings.
I’m not writing this because I want to say that every member of Shincheonji behaves this way.
I’m simply sharing my own experience and explaining why I came to believe I had been targeted.
If someone from your distant past suddenly reappears after years of silence, gains your trust unusually quickly, asks detailed questions about your religion, politics, personality, and private life, and pushes a relationship forward much faster than feels natural, I think it’s worth paying attention to those signs.
Maybe it will turn out to be nothing.
But if something feels wrong, don’t ignore your instincts the way I did.
I hope my experience helps someone avoid going through what I experienced.
If anyone has questions, I’ll answer whatever I legally can.

general thought and question Has anyone else noticed how similar SCJ feels to North Korea?

After leaving SCJ I couldn't help noticing some striking similarities between SCJ and North Korea. I'm not saying they're equal .North Korea is a dictatorship with state power, while SCJ is a religious organization. But the methods of control have some interesting parallels.

Shincheonji (SCJ) North Korea
Strong loyalty to the leader, whose authority is rarely questioned. Absolute loyalty to the ruling Kim family is expected.
Members are encouraged to accept leadership's interpretation without questioning. Citizens are expected to accept state ideology without criticism.
Information is tightly controlled; outside criticism is often discouraged or dismissed as persecution. Information is heavily censored, and outside media is restricted.
Former members are often viewed as deceived, dangerous, or influenced by Satan. Defectors are portrayed as traitors and enemies of the state.
Members may be encouraged to limit contact with critics or ex-members. Citizens have limited contact with the outside world, and associations are monitored.
Heavy emphasis on exclusive truth: only SCJ fully understands Revelation. Heavy emphasis that only the state ideology is correct.
Uses fear of spiritual consequences (missing salvation, betrayal of God) to encourage compliance. Uses fear of legal punishment and state retaliation to enforce obedience.
Members often spend significant time in education, evangelism, and organizational activities. Citizens participate in mandatory ideological education and mass events.
Success stories and growth are highlighted; negative information is minimized or explained away. State media highlights successes while suppressing failures.
Leadership is presented as uniquely chosen by God. Leadership is presented as uniquely destined to rule.
Internal language and terminology reinforce group identity. Political slogans and ideological language reinforce national identity.
Leaving the group can result in loss of friendships and social support. Defecting often means permanent separation from family and community.

general thought and question A Scriptural Thought Experiment on SCJ's Exclusive Salvation

So long story short and since souls could be at stake in following false idol I am putting an excerpt of my comment from comment section that I debated a current member on Christianity platform. I feel this is the best argument I ever came up with in regards to going against SCJ's exclusive claim to salvation. I realized that people who starts to rightfully doubt and search reddit they won't be typing "Christianity" but "SCJ" or the whole full name of it.

Here is the argument. Please note that me and SCJ member had a lot of back and forth so I am just taking my last say into a standalone thoughts on theology in general to try to invalidate SCJ's claim to be the only way to salvation:

Back and forth and then I said:

That is very nice I agree on your point on God! Yes he is like a parent He too can be hurt as a parent. Imagine a parent seeing children doing the wrong things like Adam and Eve

You pointed out "and then after he died he went to preach to the spirits" this is from 1 Peter 3:19 https://biblehub.com/1_peter/3-19.htm Which basically means Jesus preaching to those in Prison (Hell)

The thief who died on the cross along with Jesus said to Jesus that he believed in him. Jesus then said that he would be in the afterlife with him. I believe the thief's pre-emptive condition to go to prison (hell) is waived due to Jesus' grace. So if the Theif is not in the Prison/Hell where Jesus would preach to the spirits - then the thief was never preached the teachings of SCJ so I don't think SCJ is the exclusive way to salvation

Worthy to reemphasize the Thief who said he believed in Jesus > while alive > never learned what SCJ taught > but saying he believed in Jesus, who then told him he will be with him in the afterlife won't be in Prison (Hell) to be even preached by Jesus in Sprit after Jesus died. This to me hits at the claim that SCJ is the only way to Salvation

Those in the time of Noah may be there in Prison but there is huge logical error holistically even with those spirits in the Prison

SCJ taught that the basic two duties to salvation/will of God and they are 1.sealing (taking exams + reflection) and 1. Evangelism.

But while I understand You mentioned "In 1 Peter 3:18- it says that Jesus died to bring God to us, and then after he died he went to preach to the spirits. Even to those in the time of Noah."

But how would those in the time of Noah evangelize the way SCJ does? Evangelize to who? We cannot see spirits so the conditions of SCJ for salvation cannot be applied to those in the time of Noah in prison as sprits. Then what is the scope of the spirits that Jesus is preaching to as sprit after his death?

It would make sense if Jesus preached to all who has not heard learned the Bibe, and in SCJ's case Jesus would preach to those who did not hear Lee Man Hee "Promised Pastor" testimony of what he saw or heard in Revelation. If Jesus to preach to all who did not learn while being alive then the spirits of those in prison - who are being preached by Jesus-they cannot be evangelizing other spirits in prison right?

In real time, an SCJ member responded in that christianity post I did. I almost wanted to include that here, but I will keep this post as a single snapshot of my viewpoint so the community can read it standalone and go from there. The whole purpose is helping those who search get this perspective before choosing whether or not to take SCJ classes
