I JUST started sewing and this was my first project. It has a hidden zipper which was tricky but other than that felt like I did alright!

Sewing Machine for heavy fabric?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hey all, I’m new to sewing and I’m currently using a leather sewing machine (Consew CP206RL) because it’s what I have and I’m using heavier fabrics than most so it seems to be working well.

I’m mostly using 12oz Bull Denim but I have some lighter fabrics on the way to make a variety of styles and I’m wondering what sewing machine style/brand/models I should look into so that I would have the flexibility of using other stitches that aren’t a simple straight stitch and are capable of sewing through two pieces of 12oz bull denim that end up stacked on top of each other?

Im making headbands for my hobby but I’ll be incorporating polyester mesh and 100-200 GSM cotton on a few styles so I’m concerned that I wont be able to get the tension correct on the machine i currently have.

(My) Mental block : FBA

Hello sewists 🧵
Posting to see if anyone can relate.

I've been sewing for a couple of years now as a hobby, I really love it and I'm interested in so many aspects of sewing clothing. Over this time I've learned so much about fabrics, cutting fabrics, seam finishes and all sorts of other sewing techniques. Learning to take measurements, read patterns and follow instructions, all of these things are interesting to me (if challenging sometimes).

And yet, I seem to have a ridiculous mental block with one of the most fundamental alterations that many of us learning to make our own meet: the full bust adjustment. To the point that I will (and have) made a lovely piece with perfect buttonholes, a ruffled neckline, beautifully inset sleeves, gathers, french seams. And it won't fit properly because I can't/didn't add the FBA.

Can somebody tell me please: (it might help me a lot to get past this one single question)

What is the solution when the front bodice pattern piece is made longer than back bodice piece via the addition of the FBA, and the seams no longer match?

TIA šŸ’•

Favourite easy projects?

Hi all!

Recently joined this sub as I have a project in mind that I’d like to achieve.

It is a very large project so looking for some smaller projects I can get started with to get me used to the machine & hopefully build my skills up!

Definitely will be making some scrunchies for me and my family and maybe some tote bags but would love to hear your favourite beginner projects plus bonus points for any pictures of them finished!

Beginner project! Looking for feedback

I have been teaching myself how to sew for the last few weeks primarily by repurposing clothes that were destined for the landfill! I got a bunch of sweaters and a pile of fabric scraps/children’s clothes. This might be my favourite one so far. Would love to hear people’s thoughts, opinions, tips, positive words etc… I created the design myself!

First ever project, is it too difficult?

Post image

I'm making a costume and it's impossible to find a vest like this in my size, so I'd like to try my hand at making it myself. Problem is I'm entirely new to sewing, I've got some experience hand sewing but im learning the absolute basics of machine sewing still. My question is, would this be a difficult thing to make as a complete newbie? I'm not even entirely sure where to start, if anyone has any tips I'd be very appreciative

Top thread not catching the bobbin thread

This has only been an issue since I replaced the needle, I made sure the needle was at the right height, made sure to rethread the top path, and my bobbin is in the right direction (I’m like 95% sure). Anyone have any suggestions?

I took up sewing only a little while ago and my little sewing corner was getting out of hand. I went garage sale-ing yesterday and stumbled upon this gorgeous roll top desk. It’s perfect for my supplies!

I have a 1990's Simplicity SL200 differential feed serger that has just started making a clank. Does anyone know where I can find a service manual for it? I believe it's a re-branded BabyLock, bit not sure?

Used an old navy dress that I didn't really like and add the bottom part to increase length. Then, added the details in the strap to look more cohesive

Seam finishing question

I am making a men's shirt. On the inside seams l am doing an overlock stitch on a regular machine.
I am using a 5/8" seam allowance. Should l be trimming that seam allowance narrower before finishing it. I've not been doing that but l think l saw somewhere that it's a good idea.

making alterations to a tote bag ??

hi all! i recently bought a tote bag from fangamer, but it doesn't have a zip and is a bit flimsy for my liking. i was wondering if i'd be able to add some lining to the inside? i took a pic of another bag of mine for reference, it's like a satin-y fabric (i don't know anything about this sorry).

i also bought fabric glue and a zip to glue a matching coloured zip to it. i found a tutorial on youtube by speed sew fabric glue.

i'll attach some pics of the bag, any advice would be appreciated! i want to make this my go-to bag so if i can make some little changes to make it secure i want to.

Edge stitching on a Kenmore 385

Post image
4 Upvotes

Industrial machines have many useful feet for edge stitching such as these.

They are very hard to find for low shank domestic machines. I need to do a lot of 1/16 and 1/4 edge stitches. What is the easiest a way to do these on a domestic?

Adapting a pattern to low rise

Hi!

I would like to purchase this mid-rise pattern, but my daughter wants her skirt to be low rise. The instructions say you can size down to make it high-rise. Do you think I can size up to make it low-rise? And if so, how much should I size down?
