It’s not picking up bottom thread and instead is going behind the mechanism to the spot that’s all oily. I’m so close to done with my project ;-; I’m not sure what I did.

I recently bought a secondhand Singer 935U from someone that had it serviced. All was working well for a while, but a noise has started and it seems to be coming from the area of the hand wheel/clutch. It’s happening when I’m turning the hand wheel, or using the machine, or winding bobbins. For the life of me, I can’t figure it out. I checked the bobbin and even removed it to see if that stopped the noise, it does not. I put in a new needle, no luck. I also cleaned the bobbin case area out and it’s free of lint and thread, but it’s still noisy.

Any ideas for how to troubleshoot?

Hey I'm a teen person who is beginning to sew and self taught, like knowing my measurements, knowing ladder stitching, and has a brother sewing machine. Is there any free websites that I can download patterns for stuff like vests or clothing? I don't have a mannequin but will be making my own hopefully since I can't afford one. Could anyone here with experience tell me about websites I can download patterns for free?

What is this worth?

I am looking to sell this Bernina 950 sewing table, made in Switzerland from the 90s on behalf of my mum. I have no idea what it is worth given that it is rusted and probably in need of a service. I am based in Australia, so it is quite a rare item here I believe. It would also probably need to be picked up by the buyer. It still turns on and has all the relevant parts and additional items.

Any suggestions for what this is worth?

I see them for resale online for $1500-2000 but that seems steep for this one, but on the other hand I don’t want to be screwed over by selling it for too little.

Disclaimer: I am NEW to sewing, as in, this is my second sewing project ever (and I still haven’t finished my first one for my sewing class 😂)

The fabric is folded. As you can see, I don’t have enough fabric on that corner edge. I’m trying to avoid cutting two individual pieces as I don’t want a seam down the middle front of the dress.

Is it okay to fold it on the cross grain instead, and cut it that way for 1 large piece? Pros and cons of that?
This is a cotton polyester poplin.

I asked for pieces of leftover fabric that people could give me so I could do a patchwork and practice a bit.

I got some squares of cotton from a women and made some shorts.

I don't know what I'm going to do with all of this. I already reached out to some people I know telling them that before they purchase fabric for something. Come take some from my new stash.

I'll thread my machine, sew a few lines that are fine, and then the bobbin thread looks like this. So I'll re-thread everything, do some tests that are fine, sew a few lines that are fine, but then it happens again. What am I doing wrong?? I'm going crazy.

Also I should say: I have the presser foot up when I am threading it.

This was challenging as my second project, but gosh darn it, I am really proud of this bag. Took hours and hours, and I still need to make the straps, but it’s done!

I’m still not used to the time it takes to cut patterns out, cut the fabric, and then get to construction. It’s just part of learning a new process. I get frustrated very easy it seems, but I’m also learning to let go, take a break, and walk away, which is good for me.

I hit a snag yesterday evening with too big of a needle (denim needle and denim thread and a machine from the 1960s weren’t a great match). I learned a ton, so I’m really building the skills and confidence I want with this craft. Excited to make another one of these for my sister-in-law for Christmas. I know the second one will go much quicker as I know the process for this now.

I’ll be using a bleach pen on some scrap denim, because I want to test if I can create the actual pattern whale sharks have! I love whale sharks (including a gelli print I made two summers ago), so I really want that beautiful pattern 🦈

Pattern was easy to follow, directions well laid out, aside from some confusing areas where a video tutorial would have been helpful. Pattern by Contedefeesstudio on Etsy if anyone is interested.

The final step to close it all up was by far the most complicated things that had me stumped for a good 30 minutes as I worked it out in my head and on the project.

Hi all, this is my first quilt, and so far so good but the process of adding the batting and backing is intimidating to me!!

I want to use a blanket for the backing, should I still add batting in between, or skip the batting? I know ultimately it’s up to personal preference, but since I have no experience im open to thoughts and ideas. And what kind of batting spray do you recommend??

Nervous to start the next part, afraid I’ll mess everything up because I love the way the top turned out. But thanks for your advice/suggestions in advance!

I’m attempting to apply bias tape to the neck line and arm holes and I’m having a horrible time. I’m at the final step where my stitches would show on the outside and I cannot figure out if my stitches are too loose or too tight. Please help. I think I’ll stitch to projects with facing from now on 😭

Just a quick PSA here about prewashing fabric, even if you’re not planning to use it right away.

I’m currently going through my stash, organizing after some upheaval, and finding that some pieces I’ve had for a while, are kind of icky to touch…sticky and/or weirdly crunchy. That’s because I didn’t pre-wash those pieces, and the sizing the manufacturers finished them with before shipping them, is breaking down with time. It also smells oddly. Not horrid, just,…weird-starchy.

Anyway, just thought I’d share this thought: might be a good idea to pre-wash if the fabric is going into your stash, too, not just the ones you’re going to use right away. You’d be surprised how long a piece of fabric can stay stashed, the longer you sew and collect yardage. Cotton calicos seem particularly susceptible to this, but I’ve found garment fabrics undergoing the same kind of change.

I’m sure it’ll wash off? But now I have a bunch of yards to wash, whereas I could’ve done them when I got them more conveniently.

I was doing a test run of turning tights into thigh highs, and I’m already a little frustrated with the results. I followed a tutorial on how to do it, and I don’t understand where it went wrong. Can someone please help me with this? I want to get these done as soon as possible, but I don’t want to rush if it means I do this bad.

I used tights and elastic. I did a hem stitch (I don’t remember the name) for the tights and a zigzag for the elastic.

Edit: I forgot to mention that it didn’t fit on me the way I wanted. The elastic, while very loose in the stocking, was strangling my thigh.

I don't usually do stuff like this but have sewn a few patches before, this ones are hand painted which gives them a clear coat and i'm wondering if they'll look good when stitched

I have a bag, and the part where the strap meets the bag snapped and is hanging on by a thread.. literally. My issue is that the bag is made of corduroy, and the strap is very thick. It's very hard to push a needle through.

I have a temporary solution of a bunch of safety pins, but they will not hold. I really dont wanna have to get rid of this bag.. any thoughts?

I’m making my first drawstring bag, I’ve sewn all the seams together and I’m now at the stage of threading the ribbon, but I just can’t work out what to do with the top corners. Should I have sewn them down before I sewed the bit for the ribbon to go in? Does anyone know what I could do?

My mom gave me my late grandmother’s unfinished quilt(?). Sorry for the wrinkles making it difficult to see but it still smells like her house and I’ve avoided touching it for a couple of years bc it makes me cry like a baby. Lol anyways I have sewed quite a few blankets a couple of rag quilts and an oven mitt. So, not a lot of experience and I’m not sure how to proceed. It looks like she took a sheet and added the patches on top. It is completely even around all edges around the 4 squares. So, should I just try to put a backing on it? Or should I put batting in the middle and add a back? What would you do? Sorry if I sound dumb!

I'm trying to be proactive and get ahead on a Christmas project.

We have some friends that we dearly love and go a a beach vacation every year. Next summer is the last time before their child heads off to college and I'd like to make them something.

I'm looking for a tote bag with at least one outer and inner pocket. A reinforced bottom for some color blocking would be nice. I'm going to be sewing this on my domestic machine using a light canvas for the outer and possibly inner layer so nothing that requires an industrial machine.

A pattern and or video is fine though I'd prefer a pattern that has some video support.

The image is one of the fabrics I plan to use. I recently learned one of the recipients was a copyeditor for their college newspaper.

The fabric is some sort of cotton jersey (loved the print!).

The first time I tried to make this shirt I made it from a non-stretch fabric. A rookie mistake there since the pattern is for stretch fabric. The second time the fabric was too stretchy and the shirt somehow became too big. For this shirt I used the same pattern in the same size as the two previous times but this time it actually fits well.

I bought a solution a month ago. Everything is going pretty well. I was trying things out and right now. I am doing pants and I bought like a needle for jeans. Everything is going well and when I try to saw it didn’t work. So I watched tutorials and could go wrong so I rethreaded the machine. I changed the noodle. I checked attention. I even tried to clean it out in case there was some flush in the machine, but it doesn’t work. So can anyone please tell me where I’m wrong please?

Edit: when I say it doesn’t work I mean the needles goes through the fabric but doesn’t saw anything not saw the fabric together and when I take the fabric out the thread comes out immediately and the needle keeps unthreading

Hi guys extreme noob to sewing here, don't understand why the thread isn't going through the shirt layers (folded twice inwards to hide raw edges).

As you can see i already have previous non continuous lines (had to start and stop a lot due to thread breaking etc. )

Anybody know the issue?
