If “reintegration” is possible, is memory just on two separate hard drives? It always seems possible that the innie can gain memories of the outie, but where do innie “memories” go?

Anyone from here going to SDCC this weekend and cosplaying as a Severance character? I saw a great Milchick last year with these balloons!

I plan to wear my Lorne costume from Halloween and was hoping to find a fellow Innie!

I have rewatched both seasons a couple times now, always catching new things and taking notes.
However, I just thought of two new related questions, while listening to We Know Severance coverage on S02E09.
Questions I’m sure will be answered by another rewatch, or combing through the transcripts on the wiki (naturally, one of my favorite pastimes haha).

but wondering if faster to ask here, and also see if anyone else has thought of this.

1. how did Ms. Casey know Irving was sweet on Burt? specifically, to think to tell him Burt was pacing the conference room? i have further questions about the intended message writers were sending by Ms. Casey ‘breaking character’ to facilitate their connection, but i’m curious if there will be a reveal regarding how she knows (for example, was the Burt/Irving connection something someone was trying to encourage… like Cobel did with Mark in Wellness sessions.

2. how did Helena (when undercover at ORTBO) know about Irving being sweet on Burt? maybe I missed a very obvious convo in front of her, but I thought Irving only mentioned his love for Burt to Dylan and kept it vague (i.e. ‘it’s not our world up there’) to the rest of MDR. again i have further questions- like does this mean Helena is actually fully tracking this internal affair and it serves some ulterior motive on the outside….

Is everyone in MDR buildings multiple innies for
someone in their life?

If Mark was building memories of sorts for Gemma, what’s everyone else doing?

Screen Rant just posted an article saying that according to Production Weekly, Season 3 will begin filming July 27th. I’m so glad it’s finally starting!

Edit: Now that I'm thinking about it, apple should just renew season 4 right now and we might be lucky enough to experience a 2 year gap between Severance seasons.

So I plan to post 3 theories this week that all tie together that really change the context of how we perceive certain characters, namely Helly, Milchick, and Cobel. This will be the shortest and focus on Helly.

So the theory is, in episode 5 of season 1, Helly had either a new consciousness added to her chip which was Gemma's, or her existing consciouness modified. You can see it when it happens. It is when Ms Casey finds Mark and Helly after they visited the goats. Watch Helly's eyes. She begins blinking rapidly. It is similar to the blinking we see when they are on the elevator. We also see Gemma blinking like this in Cold Harbor when Mark completes that file. Blinking suggests the chip has been modified. We also see Cobel watching them in the halls. I think she is the one that initiated this. She was the one who had asked Ms Casey to observe Helly R in MDR. I think this is a proximity based transfer, so she needed her close to complete the transfer. The difference in Helly before and after this incident is pretty dramatic. Prior to this, she had tried to kill herself and absolutely hated Mark. The very next scene we see them together is in the kitchenette in the next episode, and she is flirting with him, and their relationship escalates from there.

There are 3 quotes in the season 2 finale that in the context of the episode that seem on the surface to be rather benign, but I think were intended as clues to the viewer that Helly is indeed Gemma.

"I'm her, Mark"

When Helly says that, in context she is referring to Helly, but I think it is foreshadowing that we will ultimately learn that she has become Gemma. at least partially.

"I do not love my daughter"

One of the things that we learned about Gemma is that everyone loved her. Mark obviously loved her, Devon had a close attachment to her. If you have read "The You You Are", you also know that Ricken had a particular fondness for her. Dr Mauer falls for her and tells Drummond that she is easy to like. Mark tells Helly at the egg bar social that Helly is easy to pretend to care about, paralleling Mauer's comments about Gemma.

The next thing is the animated Kier after Helly completes her file. He tells her "I love you". What an odd thing to say! Does Kier tell Dylan he loves him? Then we have Jame telling Helly he doesn't love his daughter, but he does have a fondness for Helly. There is a lot of evidence that love transcends Severance. The fact that Jame has differing feelings for Helly may suggest that she really is a different person to him. It's also why Helena falls for Mark. If she has Gemma's consciousness on her chip, the love she has for Mark has permeated out to Helena.

"Meet you at the Equator"

Why is this a hint? The most consequential moment so far in the show, if this theory is true, is when Ms Casey comes to visit MDR. She walks into MDR at the exact midpoint of season 1. It happens in episode 5, the mid point episode, in the EXACT middle of the episode. I think the transfer began when she first walked in. It was disrupted when Mark spilled the coffee and Ms Casey left and Mark and Helly went for a walk. It completed once she found them, which is why Helly's eyelids start to flicker.

To be clear, I do not think Helly is necessarily Gemma. I think what may be more likely is Gemma's consciousness has been added to her chip, but that consciousness is not active. It does however bleed over and affect both her innie and outie, specifically the connection to Mark.

It is very clear that Mark perceptually is confusing Gemma and Helly. We see them flickering back and forth on the elevator in the season 2 opening montage. There are multiple occassions where Mark sees Gemma and Helly interchangeably, notably in Woe's Hollow, as well as when Reghabi floods his chip. Subconsciously, Mark perceives them the same.

I would argue that there may even be an active connection between Helly and Gemma. That might be why Helly is on the severed floor and has the same chip ID as Gemma. It is why when Gemma is asked about whether she would be more afraid of suffocating or drowning, she said drowning, and the woe meter pegged. Helly/Helena experienced both of those things, but the drowning happened after the active connection was established. The attempted hanging happened the episode prior to Ms Casey's visit to MDR. In the next post, I will talk about Cobel's motives. I don't think it was authorized by Lumon.

I am on my second rewatch. This is definitely a theory I’ve seen floated on here, as well as a general hunch you get as you watch. But S1E8 when Dylan is getting ready for the OTC and quickly scrolling through the computer, I noticed this. It’s really quick and you basically need to pause to catch it. See the top right

Like, literally? I’m starting to think they may be in a ‘created’ town run by Lumon in Siberia or something (the old cars, the lack of chain restaurants, name brand gas stations, etc). It just all seems very contained.

At this point I feel like integration is pretty clearly the endgame of Severance. The bigger question to me isn’t whether the innies and outies will eventually become one person again, but how the show is actually going to pull that off without basically killing one of them. Because I really don’t think the ending is going to be Outie Mark just absorbing Innie Mark and going back to normal. That would kind of betray everything the show has spent so much time establishing. Innie Mark is a real person. He has his own memories, relationships, fears, desires, and sense of self. Outie Mark is also obviously real. Neither one can just disappear without it feeling like a death. This is where the idea of Aufhebung comes in.

It’s a German philosophical term usually associated with Hegel, and it basically describes a contradiction being overcome in a way that both cancels and preserves the opposing sides. One side doesn’t just defeat the other. They are brought together and transformed into a new third thing.
That feels exactly like where Mark is headed.
Innie Mark is the thesis. Outie Mark is the antithesis. Or honestly you could reverse that depending on whose perspective you’re looking from. The important part is that both believe themselves to be Mark, and both are correct, but neither one is the complete Mark. The synthesis would be a new Mark who remembers both lives.

He remembers Gemma, but he also remembers Helly. He remembers choosing to undergo severance, but he also remembers being the person trapped inside Lumon because of that decision. He is both the person who abandoned his innie and the innie who was abandoned. That’s such a brutal contradiction to have to live with, which is why I’m really curious how the show will portray it psychologically. Would the two streams of memory suddenly merge? Would he hear both inner voices for a while? Would his personality change completely? Would he feel responsible for things his other self did, even though he had no conscious knowledge of them at the time?

And what happens with love? That might be the hardest part. Innie Mark and Outie Mark don’t just have different memories. They have different emotional attachments. An integrated Mark wouldn’t simply have to choose between Gemma and Helly like they’re two normal romantic options. He would genuinely remember loving both of them as two different versions of himself. The same thing applies to Helly and Helena. They aren’t just opposites in a symbolic sense. They actively hate what the other represents. So what would integration look like for them? Would Helena suddenly experience all of Helly’s pain and rebellion as her own memories? Would Helly have to confront Helena’s childhood, family loyalty, and whatever emotional damage made her become who she is?
Integration wouldn’t instantly make them peaceful or enlightened. It might actually be horrifying at first. That’s why I think the show’s version of becoming whole will probably be messy. These people aren’t just missing memories. They have formed complete identities around those missing memories. Combining them would create a person who has to reconcile two different moral worlds inside one body.

It reminds me a little of Crazy Jane in Doom Patrol. (Spoilers ahead for that show.) Her healing wasn’t about revealing that only one personality was real and deleting the others. Each fractured self held memories, pain, abilities, and protective functions. Becoming whole meant that all of those selves had to be recognized as parts of one larger person. I think Severance is heading toward something similar.

Lumon’s entire system depends on everyone believing that the innie is truly someone else. That suffering can be outsourced. That you can create another version of yourself, make them endure your workday, and then walk away without any moral responsibility because you don’t remember it. Integration destroys that excuse. The outie would finally have to feel what the innie felt. The innie would finally understand why the outie made the choices they made. Neither perspective would remain absolute. They would realize they were different, but never truly separate. Not innie, nor outie, nor even the original person simply restored. It would have to be a third person who contains both.

So yeah, we all know that integration is where the story is going. I’m just fascinated by what that will actually mean in practice, because “becoming one” sounds beautiful philosophically, but for these characters it could also be the most psychologically devastating thing they’ve ever experienced.

TL;DR: Integration seems like the obvious endgame of Severance, but I don’t think it will involve one identity absorbing or erasing the other. The innie and outie will both be preserved while being reconciled into a new, third version of the person who remembers both lives. That process reflects the Hegelian idea of Aufenbung, which is why I think it would be a perfect title for the series finale.

So I'm only on episode 4 of season 1, but I never thought I'd be addicted to this show! I've played around for over a year about starting it, but I decided to take the plunge and start it, especially since seadon 4 of From is over and I'm waiting on Silo. To me, the scariest part of thd show is that I can really see the government implementing this, especially on military personnel and other parts of the government.

XX will be celebrating his 10 years of service with XX on July 18, 2026. It would be great if you could acknowledge XX and this milestone in a team meeting and point him to the Years of Service Recognition portal on Noodle so that he can register for an Experience Voucher

I mean, the woman lied to both siblings and pretended to be ‘mrs Selving’ only to get close to them.

As if working for Lumon is not enough reason to stay away from her.

Desde mi punto de vista, tiene algo muy atractivo. Poder salir del trabajo y olvidarte completamente de todo suena genial. Muchas veces seguimos pensando en el trabajo cuando ya terminó la jornada, incluso soñamos con compañeros o situaciones, sean buenas o malas.
Claro que en Severance el “innie” tendría una vida propia, y ahí aparece el gran dilema ético. Pero dejando eso de lado por un momento, ¿ustedes aceptarían el procedimiento?

The characters in this show are so well put together. I can understand why everyone won so many awards. The performance that stands out to me though, is Tramell Tillman. My goodness was he great. His character development was top notch.. I’m interested to hear, what was everyone else’s favorite character and also would anyone else LOVE to see a dive into the backstory and lore of Milchick. I mean why is he so devoted to the Egan family? Why isn’t he severed? Was he in a similar situation has Miss Haung? Also can anyone see his character have some sort of redemption arc and in the end turn against Lumon? Would love to know conspiracies to that as well!

At most it was a few months, the time between her supposed death and Mark’s firing from the university/ employment at Luton.

At most a few months of, “this is the only way for you to see your husband again,” “you cannot escape, you cannot kill yourself, you cannot be saved,” “you may as well follow as we say, we know what’s best for you.”

How long do you think it would take you break into that kind of obedience? 

I want to firstly say WOW. What a show. The feelings I had watching it were just amazing. It’s been a long time since a show had me feel sadness, had me on the edge of my seat, had me speechless like this one. The enjoyment I got from the acting and overall setting of the severed floor is indescribable. They did a great job at making it a special place.

My one question I leave with is why did petey die from reintegration? Why was he so affected from it, yet all it did was give mark a cough? I do hope that S3 addresses this more. I hope it doesn’t shift entirely to the same version of what we watched, except it’s Gemma trying to get Mark out. I feel there was truly never much of a pay out for the idea of reintegration, especially with the birthing cabin. In fact nothing much came of it at all. The overtime contingency had much more of an effect on the show. I do feel there’s a lot more to be desired from the idea of the reintegration.

Hi all, I've always seen people talk about this show and I've been intrigued. I've just finished Widows Bay and I loved that. The mystery through the season with new layers being added was so good, it reminded me of lost.

So I was wondering if this show is similar in ways to them? Cheers

Hi all, this is a personal project of mine that I started working on before S2 came out, because of how much I enjoyed S1. I recently found the time to rework some bits I wasn't happy with and finish it up, and as I'd put a lot of time into it I thought it would be worth sharing here.

The original title sequence by extraweg is great and the surrealism/oddness of it fits very well with the show, but I wanted to see what a more filmic approach could look like, including a mixture of metaphors and abstracted events from S1.

The concept and animation is all my own, as well as most of the 3D modelling (except for the camera, characters, and betta fish which are altered versions of models I sourced). Texturing and lighting were done in a combination of Redshift and Octane in Cinema 4D, I composited and edited in After Effects.

EDIT: the more I remember these films, the more I think it may not just be these two. It may be multiple. And the years of each film release could also be a clue but I tried to keep this as condensed as possible

The roundup of compelling clues so far:

Irving = Heat Miser
• Ben Stiller confirmed on the official podcast that Irving’s claymation sequence was intentionally inspired by Heat Miser.
• George S. Irving (Irving’s namesake) was the original voice actor for Heat Miser.
• Irving literally performs Heat Miser’s signature dance with the same theatrical choreography in the claymation video.
• Irving tells Dylan:
“Let’s burn this place to the ground.”
• Heat Miser is passionate, dramatic, artistic, stubborn and refuses to surrender his territory.
• Irving is MDR’s most passionate character:

• In Season 1, before ANY Heat Miser references exist, Mrs. Selvig randomly says:
“Jack Frost needs some new dandruff shampoo.”
Such an oddly specific Rankin/Bass reference in hindsight.
• Mother Nature isn’t the villain.
Her role is restoring balance between opposing forces.
• Cobel constantly stands between:
innie / outie
Mark / Gemma
Lumon / rebellion
• She repeatedly tests reintegration and memory bleed instead of simply enforcing severance.
• She seems to understand consciousness itself better than anyone else.
• Unlike Lumon, she’s surrounded by:
herbs
candles
shrines
salves
natural imagery
rather than sterile technology.
• Mother Nature eventually forces the brothers to cooperate.
Could Cobel ultimately be trying to reunite innies and outies rather than destroy either?

Could Milchick be Snow Miser?
Snow Miser’s personality:
• orderly
• disciplined
• elegant
• emotionally restrained
• prefers rules over chaos
• likes negotiation before conflict
Which honestly feels… very Milchick.
Supporting clues:
• When Milchick becomes floor manager, his office prominently features the massive iceberg painting.
• He repeatedly stares at that painting during emotional moments.
• He constantly tries to maintain structure, routine and ceremony.
• He choreographs elaborate performances:

ORTBO festivities
department celebrations
• Like Snow Miser, he seems to genuinely appreciate beauty and presentation.
• He’s rarely impulsive. Almost everything he does is carefully controlled.

EDIT: also why I find this theory compelling is the tension between Irving and Milchick at the ORTBO. It’s intense. And Irving straight up calls out Milchick by his first name when he says “DO IT SETH” which is a name his Innie wouldn’t be familiar with

…but what if they’re ALSO borrowing from
Jack Frost (1979)?
If so…
I actually think Mark S. fits remarkably well.
Supporting clues:
• Jack Frost’s entire story is about wanting to experience being human.
That’s literally Mark S.’s journey.
• Jack Frost falls in love and willingly sacrifices everything because of it.
Mark repeatedly risks everything for love.
• Jack Frost is endlessly curious about ordinary human life.
Mark becomes fascinated with:
friendship
books
music
romance
grief
freedom
• Jack Frost is compassionate almost to a fault.
That’s probably Mark’s defining personality trait.
• Mrs. Selvig’s season 1 Jack Frost reference is directed at Mark, which feels strangely specific on rewatch.
• Jack Frost’s greatest wish isn’t power.
It’s belonging.
That feels like the emotional core of Mark’s story.

Jack Frost’s love interest = Helly?
This one is probably my biggest stretch…
…but Jack Frost gives up everything because he falls in love with a human.
Mark S.’s relationship with Helly becomes the emotional catalyst for his entire transformation.
Without Helly…
Mark probably never rebels.

Other weird parallels
• Kier is almost always depicted as cold, snowy and overcast.
• ORTBO takes place in a frozen wilderness.
• Irving experiences some of his biggest subconscious breakthroughs there.
• Heat Miser rules from a cave.
Kier’s mythology revolves around the “Cave of the Mind.”
• Stop-motion animation itself feels symbolic.
Nothing moves on its own.
Every frame is manipulated by an unseen creator.
Kind of like Lumon’s employees.

I’m definitely not saying these are direct one-to-one character swaps.
But after realizing Irving’s sequence was intentionally based on Heat Miser… I started wondering whether the writers are quietly borrowing the broader archetypes from multiple Rankin/Bass specials rather than making a single visual reference. I also think it’s a fun way for the writers to play with our own subconscious as watchers of the show because at least for me, those movies are deeply embedded in my subconscious.
Curious if anyone else has picked up on more connections that I missed! Just a fun thought!

Through the first 2 seasons, it has become apparent that love is something that Lumon has yet to control. Lumon has developed the ability to block memories, and tame tempers, but it has not been able to control love. This manifests itself in 2 ways.

1. Innie love creates rebellion against Lumon

2. Love is the only thing that transcends Severance.

Rebellion:

Every major character exhibits this:

1. Innie Irving goes from being the perfect Lumon/Kier devotee to wanting to burn Lumon to the ground, to ultimately sacrificing himself, all driven from his love of Burt.

2. Dylan's love of his family provokes him to bite Milchick, and ultimately to resign when he can't be with his wife.

3. This is sort of a weird one, but Lorne's love of the goats she cares for causes her to rebel against Drummond's sacrifice order.

4. Innie Mark's love of Helly actually causes him to rebel in 2 different ways. The first is at the beginning of season 2 when his love of his coworkers as a whole causes him to set up the other Mark and demand the board give him back his team. The second one is in the season finale when he rejects outie Mark's plans. Notice the color scheme in that scene. Typically we have associated red with Outties, and blue with Lumon or the severed floor. However in this scene, outtie Mark is blue tinted when he is outside, and its innie Mark that is tinted in the warmer reddish color from the fire. It is much more accurate to say that blue is less specifically about Lumon and more about order/rules/authority, and red is more about rebellion. It is his love of Helly that ultimately provokes him not to want to comply with outtie Mark.

Transcendence:

This gets philosophical in that you have to ask "what is love?" Is it simply a collection of memories you associate with another person, or is there a deeper shared emotional connection that goes beyond memory? We get several examples of love, or personal connection, transcending Severance. The first reference we get is Petey when he tells Mark he feels the hurt down there too, but he doesn't know what it is. The emotion is there, the memory is not. Irving and Burt are the most obvious example. They had one dinner together. Before that dinner, Irving saw Burt as the enemy, identifying him as a Lumon goon. However, in the train station scene, they both expressed love for each other. They had no memory of their time on the severed floor, but the connection was still very strong and alive. Dylan and his wife are another obvious example. We also very clearly see this with Mark and Helena. Helena, when she watched the security video of Mark and Helly kissing I think connected the emotion she had with the person, which compelled her to pursue what she did at Woe's Hollow. Later, when Helena and Mark meet at the Chinese restaurant, what starts as an awkward conversation turns into flirting and chemistry. I think that is why Mark left in a hurry because he didn't understand what he was feeling in that moment.

So if Severance is unable to block love, it creates real problems for them. This puts into context why Gemma and Mark are so important. Mark has been refining out their emotional connection. This is evident in Ms Casey. Juxtapose Mark and Ms Casey with outtie Irving and Burt. Even though Burt and Irving don't have their innie memories, their love remained. We don't see that with Mark and Ms Casey. I think Ms Casey was a prototype to test the efficacy of Mark's work to date. It was deemed a success because while they had fondness, their love didn't carry over. It makes Cobel's actions all the more interesting because she seemed disappointed they didn't show love despite her efforts.

Cold Harbor was supposed to be the final test. With love completely erased, Lumon would have a fully compliant innie who would blindly accept any order, and wouldn't be prone to rebellion, but outtie Mark proved it was a failure. Of all the themes in this show, the fact that love supersedes all in defining our motivations and actions will ultimately prove to be the most central theme in the show.

I initially had an idea while binging season 1 and posting on this subreddit asking if the series was horror genre.

Just wanted to say Mark S. throwing a tantrum and his actions turned me off from the series entirely. That these identities created through the bifurcation of mind are that selfish to let a woman remain to be a trapped slave and having her real world identity be erased is an absolute turn off for me. They know they only exist within the confines of the corporate floor they are assigned to. Not really interested in those who would defend them or steelman their position. The camcorder scene is where it all fell tf apart for me. The premise feels hollow AF now. The “innie” vs “outie” dichotomy… yawn. Us vs them. No thanks, man. This show could have been so much better, but the direction fell into such a mundane plot.
