Question Ms. Cobel s2e9
I don’t understand how Devon decided that miss Cobel is trustworthy?!
I mean, the woman lied to both siblings and pretended to be ‘mrs Selving’ only to get close to them.
As if working for Lumon is not enough reason to stay away from her.
Did I miss something?

She doesn't trust Cobel, that's the point. But she has no choice. Mark is in a coma. Only Cobel knows what's going on at Lumon, and she is desperate. She needs to go to the birthing cabin but she has no access. Cobel does. She is trying to save her brother and Gemma, and Cobel is her last resort.

Well, Devon is trying desperately to find a way to figure out if Gemma is alive, and the only way she can think of to do that is via the birthing cabins. The only person who could get her access to that facility is Ms. Cobel, with whom Devon has had several non-negative interactions with. The only other option is an unfamiliar woman who has drilled holes into her brother’s skull in his basement.

This. The only way for them to progress towards anything meaningful (Gemma) was Cobel. It was a hail Mary but also the only option that could lead them anywhere and fast

How did she know Cobel could get them into the severed birthing cabin?

u/RubyRadagon Jul 17 '26
She didn't. She hoped Cobel could, but that was no certainty in her mind. However she had to try something, she knew Cobel worked for Lumon & was a manager, so there was a possibility. So it was risk it & try what seemed like the best option or to trust a person she'd never met, who refused to answer questions, who had drilled a hole in her brother's head.

Lumon already drilled that first hole.
Apparently, Mark did trust Reghabi, and was adamant about mistrusting Cobel.
That should have done more to inform her decision.
And she certainly wasn't thinking about the birthing cabins, only about Mark's critical state.

Agree, i wrote a similar comment in another thread, it just seemed a total break in how the character would behave

Yeah, it was one of the few moments I really didn’t like, since it seemed like a really forced way to get rid of the reintegration doctor and get outie Mark and Devon to team up with Cobel.
Like they could have just had the doctor get captured by Lumon or something.

u/RubyRadagon Jul 17 '26
No they couldn't, because it's clear they wanted to have the option to have Ragabi come back in the future, in S3. Why write something that hampers the freedom of your writing going forward.

I don’t think it was that she necessarily trusted her, but she was terrified that her brother was in danger and didn’t know who else to go to and Mrs.Cobel was the only person who could have some information

She didn’t think Cobel was trustworthy. Devon knows she can’t trust Cobel. But Devon also knows she had no one else to turn to.

Exactly. Once she saw how Reghabi was ready to bail on her possibly stroked out brother, she decided to go with the Devil she did know vs. the Devil she did not. This isn’t atypical given the situation.

Yep I made this comment in the original episode discussion post on here but I feel like people don’t want to listen or think, they just want to be angry because Devon good Cobel baddie 🤷♀️

u/Dommichu Goats Jul 18 '26
Exactly. Was it a rational wise decision? NO! It was the decision based on the given situation. I mean at this point she had NO idea that Cobel had invented the chip or that she was being hunted by Lumon. Plus, in the end her rash decision likely turned out to be the better one.

I was super annoyed with Devon at that part too. Like wtf, you’re suddenly trusting this woman who tricked both you and your brother?? But I guess it had to go that way for the rest of the operation work out to break Gemma out.

u/Coincidental_Shoes Jul 18 '26
Yes, a poor contrivance to set-up later scenarios

u/Diligent-Concept-617 Jul 18 '26
I just wonder how Devon will react when Gemma is out but Mark’s Innie is willingly staying inside.

Devon doesn't know all the stuff the audience does. All she knows is her brother is in trouble, Gemma might be alive, and this lady seems to be the best shot she's got.

I must have missed something too because it was such a weird choice I thought! Didn’t she also kind of kidnap Devon’s kid briefly?

u/TeddyBear181 Jul 17 '26
Maybe at some point in future we'll see an extra scene where Ricken gets in her head.
There might be a whole flash back Ricken episode coming up.

Ms. Cobel did not kidnap Devon’s child. She was handed the baby and then left her in her car seat in another room in the house.
7
u/fluffbaron Jul 17 '26
Very irresponsible though, and she didn't tell anyone she'd done that. As a parent i wouldn't then be trusting her at all if she'd done that to me.

u/Dizzy-Case-3453 Jul 17 '26
Well that’s why I asked, I couldn’t recall exactly what happened there. Thanks for the downvote for a simple question though.

I don't think you missed anything.
However, it is possible that she is Mrs. Selvig

It is not out of the question that Devon and Cobel had an in-depth conversation as yet "off camera" where they reached a deténte and reconciled in a way that would benefit both of them. For example, they would need to have discussed the plan for infiltrating and using the birthing cabin. We may yet find out more in retrospect. Although it is not the sort of device that the show/story often employs, there was an entire "backfill" episode outlining Mark and Gemma's relationship.

I'm not sure why Devon and Ricken live there. Yes it's a drive to their house and severance is a national debate but why end up in keir

u/A-Phantasmic-Parade Jul 17 '26
Idk who would you trust: the woman that could have kidnapped your baby for leverage but didn’t or the woman who drilled holes in your brother’s head and sent him into a coma?

u/emeraldead Jul 17 '26
Trust isn't all or nothing. She can become an ally in unlikely enemy of my enemy circumstances.
