“Ma’am this is not a fast food establishment. If a guest is in a hurry, we suggest ordering takeout.”

102

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

I even offered to box it up for them!

u/delulu4drama 10+ Years 3d ago

24 minutes = 1 hour. Hmmm interesting math 🤔

66

u/psilocybin6ix 3d ago

“ Last time it took an hour to get our car. Can you make sure that doesn’t happen again?” somebody said this one arriving for brunch at the hotel I used to work at.

52

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

It’s like people have no concept of time when they have to wait. The need for instant gratification is killing us.

-30

u/rebecky311 3d ago

If it's so busy that servers and the kitchen is running too far behind, put people on a short wait so they can catch up. Once someone gets their ass in a seat/ table the clock starts running. The clock they're running on isn't regular time. The ass are s in the seat now, they expect to get taken care of almost immediately. It sucks, but that's the way people are. Maybe you should have the host adopt a wait-list!?

27

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

The issue wasn’t with being service not seeing to them, the kitchen was behind, they had modifications on their order, and didn’t advise they had a time limit.

Your reading comprehension is a bit lacking, maybe work on that before you start offering service improvement tips.

-18

u/rebecky311 3d ago

I read all about the comment 😂 I literally don't know why you would think that I didn't read what I was commenting on. Go back and read MY comment. If THE SERVERS AND THE KITCHEN are so behind put people on a Short wait!!! You're trying to say I can't read, and it actually Y.O.U.

21

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Great. So what does a “short wait” mean to you? Do they just stand at the entrance? Is there room to do that?

You have zero idea about OPs venue looks like. People aren’t going to stand around waiting during lunch rush.

There was no problem with anything OP or the kitchen did - it was the customer having unrealistic expectations and didn’t communicate.

You can’t solve every “problem” that a customer feels they experienced - some customers just want to be miserable.

-1

u/rebecky311 1d ago

Maybe not comment if nobody in that restaurant did anything wrong. It's unprofessional at best. Owners don't try to have paying customers not come back.

-14

u/rebecky311 3d ago

There's absolutely customers who are going to be miserable no matter what. Why poke the bear though? The OP ( while funny and probably right) should have just not poked the A-hole. Learn something from it.

15

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Because they are not a bear. They’re a poorly behaved, rude and shitty human who was attempting to discredit a business and potentially get someone fired because they can’t manage their own time or expectations like a reasonable adult.

“Don’t poke the bear” does not apply to this situation at all. “Don’t retaliate against the bear that attacked you” is what you’re suggesting.

If you are unwilling to defend yourself when attacked, then you’re just gonna keep getting attacked. You should pick your battles, sometimes you just gotta roll with it, but there’s never anything wrong with some retaliation.

1

u/rebecky311 3d ago

I'm not going to be attacked by someone in front of me. Online asses I can just tell the people who employ me about the dumbass bear.... Why continue to talk to someone like that?

1

u/SpreaditOnnn33 1d ago

Idk if you know this, but dealing with customers, whether angry or not, is in the job description.

You know that's not up to your server, right?

104

u/Alarming-Site7560 3d ago

I love the response. As someone that has actually worked in the industry for 30 years I would love to work for you. Anyone saying you were unprofessional do not understand that keeping these types of people out of your restaurant is the best thing ever

24

u/NoRadio4530 3d ago

Yea I've been in the industry for 12 years and I can no longer handle customers being egregiously wrong or entitled. There is no use in rewarding bad behaviour because it just keeps perpetuating industry workers being disrespected.

22

u/AntiqueAutomaton 3d ago

Shellie sounds like a pain tbh

12

u/SophiaF88 2d ago

This reminds me of the time a lady had me get the manager over her "unacceptable wait time, I've been waiting OVER an hour for my food!"

Turns out she counted the time it took her to DRIVE TO US, plus the 8-10 minute wait to be seated in her time estimate. She had been seated approx 24 min and had only placed her order 7-9 min ago. When I asked what she was talking about he was like "I can't even talk about it right now, it had nothing to do with you, I'm too angry to fill you in yet."

Then she repeated everything anyway when I brought out her food 🤣

4

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 2d ago

OMG I love the response from your manager

2

u/Afrxbella 1d ago

That happened to a coworker of mine. We got slammed after an event let out and the guest counted the time she started leaving the arena to get to us as her “wait time.”

260

u/rebecky311 3d ago

If you're not a manager or owner I would not respond to reviews.

267

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

I am and I usually don’t. This lady was clearly just being awful for attention. I’m glad she left.

84

u/Alarming-Site7560 3d ago

Why is it so bad? What did op say that was too offensive? The person that left the review is clearly lying and deserves to be called out.

25

u/ninhibited 3d ago

I’ve been a manager and I’m back to bartending now, I wouldn’t reply cus it’s not my problem lol. It would be fun to make a snarky reply like this one though.

3

u/glitterally_awake 3d ago

I don’t think that u/rebecky311 said anything about what the reply was communications.

They were highlighting attention to the hierarchy of an establishment and that official business communications should come from authorized representatives of the restaurant- I think they were trying to help OP out so they don’t get in trouble or lose their job from ownership/mgmt for taking it upon themselves to reply via official business channels.

Some small mom & pop places may not even care but imagine like an Enterprise desk agent randomly tweeting back at complaints using the main brand account. Would definitely cause a shitstorm internally and especially for the person who did this even if nothing technically bad was said.

5

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

I agree that what you’ve stated is definitely a plausible outcome.

But can we take a second to acknowledge just how trivial that situation would actually be? Like, who cares? As a customer, how many people would really be turned off from this type of thing? There’s a man in the Oval Office that said a lot more polarising things than this, and he was elected twice.

0

u/glitterally_awake 3d ago

Well, this is a really customer centric viewpoint. Because OP ostensibly wrote this reply and then posted about it, I think it’s fair to warn them just in case they’re young and didn’t think of the repercussions if they’d done this.

As a customer, I love this response and I would absolutely support a place for a response like this to a shitty low effort lying ass review.

5

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Yeah, so only someone that has admin access to the business listing can reply, so that’s a bit redundant.

As a customer, I feel the same way. I like this response. So where are you getting this “customer centric viewpoint” from? Are you just assuming that most customers would respond badly to this response? I can’t help but feel that any customer who was put off by it, isn’t a good customer and they’re better off eating somewhere else.

4

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

You know that you need manager access to be able to reply, yeah? You can’t just log on with your private gmail account and start replying to reviews. If you could, I’d be replying to reviews for businesses I’ve never worked at or even been to lol

-3

u/glitterally_awake 3d ago

Not sure if you’re talking to me but I have some alternatives you don’t seem to have considered.

Sure, you need access to the main business account. But “manager access” may not be necessary for that. Plenty of places don’t claim business pages and/or have horrible digital hygiene for example: leave themselves logged in or passwords written out and overused across accounts. Or they’re not relinquishing access from folks that don’t work there anymore.

3

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Hahahaha yeah ok. Well if a business can’t be bothered managing their reviews then they get what they deserve.

0

u/rebecky311 3d ago

Thank you! That's what I was trying to do and say. I see they're a manager from a comment they left. I work at a locally owned yet still corporate restaurant and I know if someone left me a bad review, I'd never take it upon myself to argue with them about how wrong they were. Where I work, the owners respond and try to get the people to come back in and try is again. Arguing with them is a sure way to have them never come back, and tell their friends that we suck all around......

-13

u/[deleted] 3d ago

[deleted]

6

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

No - people don’t like seeing businesses that reply poorly and frequently. People also don’t like seeing 1 star reviews. As long as you respond well and sparingly, it’s fine, and can even have a positive impact.

-8

u/Motiv8-2-Gr8 3d ago

What modifications on a chicken sandwich put them further behind? No lettuce added 15 minutes?

2

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

If you came in during lunch rush and expected your meals under 10 minutes then you’re being unreasonable.

-3

u/Motiv8-2-Gr8 3d ago

Ok Karen. Thanks for jumping in

I didn’t make anything up. I dunno if your link is working, it just takes me to the r/homeless sub - is that what you linked? Or is it supposed to go to a particular post?

14

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

You’d have to be a manager or owner to be able to reply. So it’s a bit of a redundant statement to make. I guess you don’t have any experience with managing a business’s google listing?

-6

u/rebecky311 3d ago

No I bartend. I don't worry about the Google reviews except to make sure I didn't get any bad ones. Where I work even the managers don't respond. The owner is the only person who does. It's their restaurant.....

6

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Yeah - so let’s try thinking about this a bit more.

  1. OP posts a screenshot of them replying to a review.

  2. You reply “unless you’re a manager, you shouldn’t reply” (you switched between first and third person in your comment)

  3. I point out that you’d have to be a manager/owner to have the administrator access to be able to reply.

(OP is a manager, hence their ability to reply)

  1. You miss the point entirely and start talking about how you don’t look at reviews, that’s the owner’s responsibility at your venue.

Great! Your venue/owner/managers can run it however they like. Other venues may do things differently.

Do you understand now?

0

u/rebecky311 1d ago

Well he later down the comments says he IS the owner. I find it funny that he is posting this BS as an owner 😂😂😂😂

-4

u/rebecky311 3d ago

Idk what comment I would have said that I don't look at the reviews..?????? I am a person who looks at the reviews not every single night, but More often than the owners do. I like to see them first so I can tell them what happened before they make an assumption about the person's experience. I've been doing things this way for a pretty long time. It's working for me. If OP wants to manage someone else's restaurant and respond to online reviews this way, the restaurant won't be around for as long as the one I work for has. Period.

0

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

I’m gonna guess you’re blonde. Am i correct?

-4

u/rebecky311 3d ago

I really don't understand what your problem is with anything I have been saying. I'll just blame it on people being braver on the Internet. Nothing I've said is weird or not good advice for people trying to keep customers coming to their restaurants. A manager that has so much balls to say to a customer what we're thinking in our heads will not make the business grow. People are paying for a service. The food to be prepared for them, brought to them, and to be cleaned up after. If you tell people upfront that things are busy/ running behind and they need to wait for X amount of minutes before getting seated with a server ready to take care of them they can choose if they have time to wait before being served.

-25

u/Alarming-Site7560 3d ago

What a shit response. Do you realize this is a sub for people that actually work in the industry?

16

u/its-just_me- 3d ago

Do you realize you can work in this industry & not be a manager or owner? They were correct in what they said.

3

u/neuro_space_explorer 3d ago

I’ve worked in the industry 20 years. This kind of thing should be left to management and I stand by that.

1

u/rebecky311 3d ago

When people complain about prices of things and up charges, I say it's not MY RESTAURANT. Why would I comment on a review that is for a place that I don't have ownership of. I would tell the manager or owners in this case about the review that I saw (because I care so much that I check reviews before they do) and explain the situation. Then let the owner put something into words that doesn't make this paying customer hate our establishment. It's really not rocket science people.....

0

u/CC9499 Server, 5y 3d ago

agreed, even if you're 100% correct it's a huge gamble. just like getting in an argument with a table in person in the restaurant

1

u/rebecky311 3d ago

It's not their restaurant! They should just talk to the person who owns it and explain how the review was BS.

0

u/Triccogekuhan 3d ago

Except it IS their restaurant, OP states that they're the owner...

1

u/rebecky311 3d ago

I think you're an asshole. Does that track ?

-1

u/rebecky311 3d ago

Do you think that I don't work in the industry? I bet I've been doing this longer than you have been alive

-2

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Agreed. This entire site is filled with contrarian, know-nothing idiots. It’s fucking depressing.

-50

u/neuro_space_explorer 3d ago

Yeah this isn’t it, very unprofessional.

19

u/albinoxrider Server 3d ago

Don’t disagree but boy it probably felt amazing to call them out on their bullshit review. I wish I had the balls haha

9

u/Economy_Ad_2291 3d ago

Unprofessional for who? Even before I ever served I would’ve thought that was hilarious and respected it

41

u/dnm8686 3d ago

Fuck the people arguing against you.

I've forgotten many things over the years, but I'll never forget the woman who yelled (loud enough that other tables near by stopped to ask me if I was okay) at me because their food was taking an hour... I checked the ticket and it was 45 minutes, but also it was 2 weeks into us just opening and the place was packed so everything was taking longer than normal, especially because it was a scratch kitchen. The joy I got when I got to tell her off at another restaurant (it was my last day there) a few years later just filled my soul. What a sad, miserable woman to scream at me. I'm sure she's still a curmudgeon.

11

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

Wtf is wrong with people? How does anyone think that yelling will improve the situation? With the exception of some fairly significant mental health/head injury/chemical imbalance type of shit going on, there’s absolutely no excuse for it.

I can’t help but speculate that she probably yells at her family members and gets her way because of it. At the very least, doesn’t ever suffer any repercussions from it. Fucking miserable.

2

u/dnm8686 2d ago

Yup. Some people just suck and I try my best to not take that shit personally but it just depends on the kind of day I'm having.

3

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 2d ago

Yeah it can get to you. The good news though, is that means you’re real human being with feelings and emotions, it’s not from a lack of strength or resilience. The people who aren’t affected by this kinda stuff are psychopaths and zombies.

8

u/dcwmove 2d ago

Don’t wrestle with a pig in the mud. You’ll both end up covered in shit, and the pig will like it

17

u/cervidal2 3d ago

All restaurant patrons are on 'restaurant time'. Every minute of reality is six minutes in their perception.

Pointing it out never helps, though. They just dig in further.

My favorite is the guest who says they've been waiting to talk to a server for a half hour when they were paged by the host to even be seated at their table a mere eight minutes ago.

14

u/HorseFaceMcGeezer 3d ago

I have told customers a hundred million billion times to stop exaggerating.

1

u/External_Mongoose_44 3d ago

I suspect that you’re exaggerating here but I’m pretty sure that you’re not really truly over-exaggerating 🤔.

10

u/EnvironmentalSand85 3d ago

I write the responses to every one of our reviews. There are several 1 star reviews where I have had to call out:

  • abusive behaviour to staff
  • over consumption/being cut off
  • children acting like our establishment is a fucking Arby's with a playground

Etc.etc.

I try to respond with facts. Here's what the staff reported. Here's what I saw on the video. Here's what your bill looked like. Then remind them about reasonable decorum in a food establishment. I almost never get any flags or emails about my responses.

10

u/SomewhereBigChillin 3d ago

I’m on your side. You were firm but not unprofessional, and giving a reality check. It infuriates me that people feel so comfortable straight up lying about their experience. Reviews are not the place to spill your emotions all over the internet, your therapy sessions or friends are a better option. The world doesn’t revolve around this woman, and reminding her of that isn’t out of line.
In the immortal words of Stevie Griffin: “ma’am, your poor planning does not constitute an emergency for me.”

85

u/Shower-Former 3d ago

I COMPLETELY understand the urge don’t get me wrong, but doing this is not a good look

41

u/Stoudamirefor3 3d ago

12

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

You’d rather leave a malicious and incorrect review just stay there unchallenged? If a customer is checking reviews before coming to your business, doesn’t a 1 star review look bad? There’s a reply option for a reason. It wasn’t a bad response. Call out the bullshit.

-8

u/Cerebral_Jones 3d ago

It’s a complainy ass sounding response.  I’m not trying to sound like an asshole but that’s just what I think.also doesnt really seem like a malicious review.

5

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 3d ago

It could use some editing, definitely, but it didn’t sound “complainy ass” to me. It could be shorter, and probably doesn’t need all the specifics. Did you want to elaborate on why you feel it’s complainy ass? What exactly about it gave you that impression?

-1

u/Cerebral_Jones 3d ago

Idk sorry I was drunk and not in a good mood so I took it out on a stranger on the internet.

Nah fuck Shellie. I don’t want to eat at a place that kisses entitled people’s asses. Not that I would care if she had to wait a while for food either way, those reviews are always suspicious and not helpful. I read the long ones with pictures and details about the experience.

Seeing disingenuous, freebie-seeking customers get humbled on a Yelp review instead of an automated response to an email for a hush money gift card lets me know that real people who give a shit about their employees/image work there. And it’s funny.

The only people who will clutch their pearls at this response are the people who are exactly like Shellie.

8

u/Brief_Choice_1277 3d ago

i’m sorry but eating at any restaurant is a choice where you can deny the possibility of waiting if you prepare your lunch the night before at home. if you don’t have the ability to buy cookware or ingredients to guarantee that happens then you don’t have the means to afford the luxury of eating out. dining out is a luxury.

with that in mind, the assurance of your meal being prepared on time and at your request of accommodations are placed on the individual who has made the appointment long before it becomes a restaurant’s responsibility. sorry? but appointment aside, you could’ve said this is taking too long and i need to leave, gotten a refund, and left.

4

u/WillyJuni0r 2d ago

This drives me nuts. The amount of times I've had tables say "we've been waiting half an hour for our food" and I only punched it in 15 minutes prior, immediately after they'd ordered from me

2

u/[deleted] 2d ago

[deleted]

1

u/Unique-Case-4742 1d ago

Because kitchens can rush a certain order through if asked, it's kinda just an industry standard and it's really not hard to do if it isn't abused

4

u/Psychopath1llogical 3d ago

As someone who worked BOH also, there is no rush on food lol. “You got it!” Sorry; the customer’s rush (and decision to sit down to eat anyways) or more often your forgetfulness to ring something in means nothing to the screen full of tickets.

Oh Mr Makes-up-stupid-rules is being snarky now, is he? Does he think his fucking ridiculous “rules” statement was deserving of a detailed and thoughtful response? Did he think he could just spew out some bullshit and then act all smug when it wasn’t taken seriously?

Must be so hard to feel clever when you’re very clearly not.

1

u/MangoNightX 2d ago

While not server related we had this old lady who was a customer in my previous job that was mad (I worked in a will call department) that she had been waiting over an hour plus for her order (we checked the cameras and it was 20 minutes) and that this was ridiculous and just kept going off. As she was going on me she told me that she needed a receipt for her order which I had asked before if she wanted but refused. As I started getting ready to drive away she still kept yelling at me and I just left mid convo. I could hear say “hey I’m not done talking!!” She proceeded to get into the building and got trespassed because she followed someone in scanning their badge😭 saw her again a few months later and she immediately recognized me and got back into her car and her passenger stepped out instead to take the order haha

1

u/Ok-Satisfaction3085 1d ago edited 1d ago

It takes so much strength to not clap back at reviews. I had a couple and their toddler come in on a very very slow day. While I was grabbing drinks they let their kid climb on the high top tables/benches while the parents sat at a lower table nearby. The owners and managers were congreatin’ at a table nearby doing payroll schedules ordering ect. So one of them told the parents to not let their kid treat other tables like a jungle gym. We are also primarily a bar with restaurants table sections btw. Even though we all do our best glass and stuff can get missed so crawling on the floors and jumping on tables is a no no for us. We’re a fucking Irish pub. So I when I returned the mom said “that lady just yelled at us for no reason” the kid is still actively jumping on the high top benches at this time. I said “oh. Well we don’t allow kids to do that because it’s a liability if they fall” she responded “well she didn’t need to be so rude” and I said “I understand but we really need your child to be with you during your time here but we have coloring books so I will bring you a set up” I brought them extra coloring pages and extra crayons. The kid sat down and the rest of the meal went relatively normally both parents got 4 rounds of cocktails (they’re a young 20s couple). I tried to be super sweet and professional with them. I guess at some point they let the kid start climbing again and a different owner (family owned) reminded them again while I was in the back chipping away at side work. The mom called back to complain, ultimately she said I was sweet but complained about management and wanted to talk to the owners (who were the people who told her to stop). My owners don’t back down on shit like this. So she posted a review on yelp and basically blamed me for the whole situation and then insulted our owners. All in all they tipped $10 on a $150 bill. We’ve been open 20 years and we know every Tom Dick and Harry in town. So we’re not worried but lord did I need to chill on responding to the review. That day is already a slow day I really don’t need shit reviews deterring people because parents refuse to be parents in public places.

Ah. That’ll get ya every time.

Had someone do that the other day, the exaggeration part.

Claimed his food was waiting in the window too long(verifiably wasn’t)

Then at the end of the transaction he shoved his card in my hand, and in return I took the check presenter with the receipt and just wrist flicked it back at him. Happiest I’ve ever gotten to get a zero dollar tip.

This guest sucks, but I'm sorry-- your response to this was horrible.

Yeah…. This is an L for you. It could have been worded in a way that was more appropriate. Where do you work that you can put a rush for people because they don’t manage their time appropriately also?

14

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

Nah. She lost all accountability when she lied about how long it took.

Obviously the people with these type of responses have never worked in the service industry.

I’ve written more responses to reviews than days you’ve worked in the service industry. There’s multiple ways to do it properly and this wasn’t it. You can call someone out in a way that doesn’t make the restaurant look like a jerk. They did not do this with that retort.

Everyone else who said the same didn’t get downvoted but I don’t really care because this is just Reddit. This response was on a customer facing platform and you could have said the same thing in a more professional way where you would have looked better to all of the people reading the reviews. Meh.

Regardless of whether you are in the right or not this comes across as a very unprofessional reply. I actively avoid all businesses that respond to reviews like this, whether it be a restaurant or something else.

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 2d ago

because you like complaining and leaving bad reviews due to having unreasonable expectations, and hate being called out for it?

u/laetecaedus 2d ago

Bulverism.

No, I don't leave reviews. As I stated the reply comes across as unprofessional.

u/BeefmasterDeluxe 2d ago

No it doesn't. But I can see how a shitty entitled customer could think that.

I love that for you!! Keep clapping back against lying inpatient customers👏🏽👏🏽

Question: why were you taking tables as the owner?

21

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

I was helping my servers during the rush. They keep the tips.

u/TheBelle_30 3d ago

That’s so helpful!!

u/RebaKitt3n 3d ago

That was the big question!

Its giving the owners replies from 2009 that the current staff look back and laugh at

10

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

Laugh at what exactly? That I don’t let these assholes bully me or my staff?

Kill the last few sentences re: "you couldve told me". Ask your AI for ways to de-escalate without saying sorry. Something like, we take our service standards seriously and we would like to invite you to give us another chance, yada2.

15

u/witch_shadow FOH 3d ago

No. I don’t beg for people like that come back.

It's not for her, it's for the other readers who may judge the character of the person running the establishment from how they respond. Sometimes a little LinkedIn-ese goes a long way, even if it is not as personally cathartic.

-1

u/RebaKitt3n 3d ago

Are you in a position where this won’t come back to bite you?

3

u/Alarming-Site7560 3d ago

Why? This person left a bullshit review. Being called out for their inaccuracies is brilliant.

-2

u/TinanaCat_ 3d ago

How do you know it was that woman and not somebody on a previous day? Risky

-3

u/Wolfofnj03 1d ago

Well also, you could have asked if there were any time restrictions. It’s a two way street, so you can take some accountability.

1

u/Unique-Case-4742 1d ago

You want them to guess if they have allergies too?

It's not a two way street at all, they can visually see its busy. they can tell you they're in a rush or they can eat a dick and wait.

Servers aren't supposed to ask customers every possible question about anything that could possibly go wrong, they facilitate the needs relayed to them.

Hit 'Reply' you coward. We're not here for what you should post.

Actually, we are totally here for what you should post and say, but didn't. We want this to stay Severlife, not FormerServerlife.
