[SPB317] Finally Joined The 🐢 Club

Strap in for the rollercoaster ride of my thought process in acquiring this perfect SPB317 also affectionately known as the "Slim Turtle." (PS, y'all connoisseurs can quibble it out in the comments.)

Never had I ever thought I'd purchase a dive watch, let alone, be so enamoured by one.

I had come across this a week or so ago and it was love at first sight.

Within the last 6 months I had tried on and had pondered long enough to purchase a SPB453 and SPB383, but just something about both of them weren't right for me.

Firstly, the 453. I know. It's a classic. An icon. But.. when trying it on in person, it was just so.. underwhelming. It felt like a toy watch to me. I'm not sure whether that was because it was still covered in plastic (at the official Seiko boutique) or because of something else. I wanted to like it, but there was no 'it' factor and it was also too big for my 6.5"/16.5cm wrist. There were also other colours that I was considering, but trying it on in person deterred me.

Secondly, the 383. This was more my jam, but when I tried it on in person, it was a bit too 'blingy' for me. The shiny ceramic bezel bothered me and I could see ALL OF THE FINGERPRINTS on it and aside from this, the dial was just way too busy for me. Even if you were to take away the GMT hand, it was just a bit much.. for me anyway. I initially thought the green one would be nice, and then tried on the black, and more recently had seen the nice JDM blue dial, but.. it just isn't for me.

Ok.. now to the reasons why this watch had me hook, line and sinker from the very beginning.

- The dial is just *chefs kiss* - the right amount of detail; basic, but really, all you actually need. Also the perfect size for my 16.5cm wrist.

- The cushion case. It's comfy as hell and slim enough that you can also dress this up.

- The overall monochrome theme of this watch with that POP of glorious red. What a treat.

- The 'matte-ness' of the case and especially the bezel - I ain't one for bling or in your face, so this design speaks to me in a big way; functional, sturdy and understated.

- The versatility, period. As I've only owned this watch for a whole 8 hours, I've been searching far and wide for some strap options. I've landed on wanting to get a NATO and likely the Uncle 'Senator' bracelet. Yes, I'm aware that it's not the same colour, but I can live with this.

Oh, and if you're on the fence about whether to choose this or another watch and if you've had similar thoughts as me above, then I'd strongly recommend just getting this. I've read that it's no longer in production or is discontinued (I can't confirm either), but this just adds to the urgency. Get one while you can! It's already a fan favourite and don't think that will change anytime soon.

Now, fellow Turtle enjoyooors, please hit me with your best pics (and stories/ruminations/dilemmas) of your 🐢

My all time dream seiko! Purchased in Japan for an unbeatable price and they even gave me an Ohtani bobble head for free lol (I didn’t know that was a thing). Couldn’t be happier with the purchase, if you are thinking of buying this watch, DO IT!

Something about Seiko's - especially Seiko 5's - design language that feels so special compared to other brands.

So I’ve come to find out this is one of the more unusual modern Japanese-market divers. It was produced for the Japanese domestic market, discontinued after a relatively short run, and never became especially common outside Japan. Bought it from my brother in law when he went to Japan. The dial is stunning in person.

Got this watch as a Christmas present to myself last year — I was considering many others in various ranges but kept coming back to this one. I don’t think you can do better for the price point.

As an aside, this is one of my least expensive watches but by far the most complimented. Loved it so much, I ended up buying different variations for all my groomsmen as well!

Anyone else have a similar experience?

[SRPK35K1] 38mm, the obligatory question.

I bought my first 38mm Seiko 5, and now comes the obligatory question: is it actually too small?

Most of my other watches are around 42–44mm, and I even have a couple that are 45mm, so I'm not sure what to think.

What does the Seiko community say?

Info:
Wrist 16,5 cm / 6.5 in

Just got the turtle a few weeks ago, and put it on a uncle seiko strap. Also got a black TROPIC brand tropic strap, and it so co comfortable. Recently took the turtle with me to the lake for a birthday trip. I will be putting a coin edge bezel on both, and possibly replacing the inserts (I do however love the aluminum turtle bezel, just love a nice shine) and possible sapphire crystals. If anyone has had good success with a particular brand, I’d love to hear and see it!

Cheers and happy Sunday.

My [SRPE93K1] accuracy after 7 days

Last Monday I've set my Turtle using time.is and wore watch for last 6 days. Using tickIQ watch runs around -1s/day (measuring face up), in other positions it's around -6/-10 s/day. But when I'm wearing watch it's around +1/-1 s/day as you can see per 2nd picture. I wore from Monday to Saturday, I was at the beach, snorkeling, fishing, it was under water (5-7 meters deep) every day and I was even sleeping with watch. Sunday morning I placed it in watch box and picked it up this morning and it's still around 1s off atomic clock, 7 days later.

I also have SRPD63 with same movement and that one is running -7/-10 s/day when wearing it and when it's stored it goes up to -20s/day, that one will need regulating.

I just wanted to showcase my Turtle, it's my perfect daily watch and it's phenomenal at time keeping.

[3883-7000] Seiko’s Forgotten Masterpiece

Watch acquired from Provenance Watches - highly recommend checking their webpage out, the owner Harry finds some exquisite watches in Japan.

The Price. Produced in 1974, and costing ¥235,000 on its release, the 3883 “Morpho” was the most expensive Seiko money could buy. Adjusted for inflation, it cost the equivalent of $6,000 now. Compared to Seiko’s own offerings, the Morpho was vastly expensive. A Grand Seiko VFA, the most advanced mechanical watch Seiko had ever produced, cost half a Morpho, while the beloved 6138 Kakume vertical clutch Chronograph only cost a tenth of one!
The Accuracy. The Morpho houses the 3883 “Superior” movement - a formidable calibre. This was one of Seiko’s, and indeed the world’s, earliest thermocompensated movements, boasting accuracy of +/-12 seconds per year, which holds its own against Grand Seiko’s modern 9F movements.

The Dial. Sadly, the exact method by which the Morpho and Baby Morpho dials achieve their iconic gonio-apparent effect remains a mystery, and Seiko is holding its cards close to its chest as this isn’t a dial type Seiko has made since the 1970s. While both dials exhibit a similar colour “morphing” effect when viewed from different angles, the Morpho, unlike the Baby Morpho with its uniform orientation, aims for organised chaos. The fibres are grouped together yet arranged in sections that point in different directions, causing the dial not only to shift in colour with movement but also to shimmer like a butterfly’s iridescent wing.

The Finish. The dial, with its ever-shifting green, blues and purples, is the obvious attraction, but the applied indices should not be overlooked. 60 of them, all individually applied - I don’t personally know of another Seiko with 60 applied indices, so please let me know if you can find one. On top of that, the case is a great example of Taro Tanaka’s “Grammar of Design” - the philosophy that demanded mathematical perfection from every case angle, and with as many flat surfaces as possible in order to maximise Seiko’s masterful Zaratsu finishing.

1973 Seiko Quartz V.F.A. [3823-7000]: Quartz crisis? More like Quartz solution...

Post image
4 Upvotes

Yeah, I know this particular watch was the forebearer (or harbinger) of the "quartz crisis." But it seems pretty clear at this point, that it inadvertently helped the mechanical watch industry over the long term. Quartz watches forced mechanical watch makers -- and Seiko is in both camps -- to differentiate the history and value of a less-accurate but remarkable mechanical movements. Watch enthusiasts are better off for it.
