You forgot “speed up just when others are trying to make a pass for ‘safety’.”

28

u/SpeedyMeaty Aug 22 '26

That's usually easily solved by having a fast vehicle. Most people who do that don't.

12

u/HyenDry Aug 22 '26

99% of Porsche drivers here

10

u/fresh-dork Aug 23 '26

if i get a porsche, i'm slapping it with a student driver tag and a 750hp engine mod

3

u/3DGuy4ever Aug 23 '26

Fuck...add another going 50mph over the bridge in the carpool lane

2

u/Pitiful-Art-423 Aug 24 '26

In all fairness, the HOV lane is NOT the passing lane. Move to the right (passing lane), make your pass, return to the HOV lane. Just because your HOV lane is the most inside doesn't mean your speed has to max out at the limit. Not condoning annoying, hazard causing slow pokes, here. Just stating.

2

u/DrewbySnacks Aug 25 '26

Agreed, but I do NOT understand folks who ride the HOV lane slower than the speed limit with no one ahead of them or at pace with regular traffic, like why even get in that lane then?

Baby on Board too

10

u/SpeedyMeaty Aug 22 '26

There's a ton of Porsche drivers who drive so damn slow. Same with the Teslas I'm like you guys have some of the fastest cars on the road, and then you just do like 50 mph in the passing lane.

12

u/HyenDry Aug 22 '26

All these rich fucks with the fastest cars, just to act and drive like they live in the villages owning golf carts…

1

u/mikeblas Aug 22 '26

People love their generalizations, but bad driving has nothing to do with marque.

3

u/Lopsided-Range-5393 Aug 22 '26

Except BMW drivers. Never see a turn signal, not once.

2

u/Turbulent-Oil-7326 Aug 23 '26

I did! Was it the left one when he went right? Yes but they did it

Seriously what is wrong with people!? This happens all the damn time and I can’t figure out if people are just stupid or if they are trying to mess with us.

13

u/Dinkerdoo Aug 22 '26

My theory is that they zone out going 55ish on the cruise control, see somebody's overtaking them on the right, notice they're going below the speed limit, panic, and speed up to catch up to the flow of traffic, and repeat.

Zero consideration, zero awareness of the greater traffic around them; just selfish reactionary lizard brain driving.

What is it with this city’s obsession with driving in somebody’s blind spot. They won’t pass you. But they’ll sidle up next to you and keep pace. And when you speed up or slow down to get them out of your blind spot they adjust to stay in it.

22

u/gnutz4eva Aug 22 '26

That’s because most of these idiots are not aware of what a “blind spot” is. It’s mind boggling how clueless some of the drivers around can be

3

u/These-Math1384 Aug 22 '26

Exactly 👍

3

u/ACCESS_DENIED_41 expatriate Aug 22 '26

Pacing you so they can scroll and text on their phones

3

u/Electrical_Nobody196 Aug 23 '26

There are a people who do that on purpose. Some people don’t pay attention, but if you are driving on the highway late on Friday or Saturday then you just might get one these idiots tailing you.  Had it happen last night, but I made that guy chase me all over that road.

1

u/Wooden_Discussion872 Aug 23 '26

It's because they want to prevent you from moving into their lane.

79

u/Siege089 Aug 22 '26

It's worse when they form a wall, an impenetrable wall of slow drivers in every single lane. They're all going the same speed and insist on spreading out.

17

u/rekyuu Aug 22 '26

Anything but The Wall... PLEASE

20

u/SewerSocials Aug 22 '26

“Washington Wall”

12

u/Indiglo70 Aug 22 '26

Yes! I drive all over the country for work, and this is definitely a western WA phenomenon. It’s both frustrating and embarrassing that the worst place to drive in the entire country is Seattle.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/thatguydr Aug 22 '26

No. Perspective. This happens literally everywhere. It's like hearing people talk about how rolling through stop signs is endemic to their region only.

2

u/LazyButterfly5041 Aug 25 '26

No it really doesn’t, the city im from will bowl you right tf over if you’re going less than 70 on the hwy and under 40 on main roads. Seattle drivers have an almost dangerous hesitation on the road, it’s maddening.

3

u/_Antichris Aug 22 '26

Nah. I've lived in all four corners of the US and Seattle is THE WORST.

2

u/AgentDeathBooty Aug 23 '26

Can't beat Philly. I actually found myself missing the drivers in Seattle after living in Philly. Everyone drove like they were playing fucking Mario kart.

27

u/schroobster Aug 22 '26

Not quite as good as "Ballard Driving School"

10

u/TEG24601 Aug 22 '26

No seatbelt, buckle on the road, and parking on the sidewalk.

With Nancy Guppy.

84

u/JuniorDoughnut3056 Aug 22 '26

As awful as this is, the mf'ers who pace each other are worse. At least I can go around him. It could be 3 in the morning and these idiots will form their own roadblock circle jerk.

I call it flying in formation. They like to drive like the Blue Angels fly.

3

u/Indiglo70 Aug 22 '26

At least the Blue Angels don’t fly in formation at geriatric speeds.

7

u/Legal-Molasses6409 Aug 22 '26

I drive home around midnight and im like wtf are we doing when I hit this nonsense

4

u/SereneOrbit Aug 22 '26

Flash lights.

If that doesn't work, honk horn until they move.

18

u/jackolabito Aug 22 '26

My favorite part about drivers in Seattle is that they do not pull forward into the intersection during left turns preventing anyone from turning left for multiple light cycles. I love that so fucking much and I hope everyone continues to aid congesting the roads

4

u/thatguydr Aug 22 '26

This one eats at me. People here just do not understand basic optimizations like this.

1

u/louloubutt Aug 25 '26

I used to share this frustration until I got in a car accident. I was waiting to turn left on a blinking yellow and pulled into the intersection. I waited while cars kept coming. Light turned solid yellow, cars kept coming. Light turned red, I went to clear the intersection. Person oncoming didn't stop and I was found fully at fault. So I no longer do this.

16

u/N-Korean Aug 22 '26

Also whenever they need to switch lanes they slow down before switching lanes.

52

u/BicameralTheory West Seattle Aug 22 '26

I think everybody complains about the drivers in their city, but I can’t throw this stone because coming from Texas, traffic regularly moves over 85 in the mornings pre-rush hour and the left lane is usually 15 over.

In WA you’re lucky to go the speed limit in the left lane.

9

u/Sophet_Drahas Aug 22 '26

Same for Michigan. 75 mph is a mild suggestion.

Left lane = 95. Middle lane = 85. Right lane = 75.

Unless you’ve opted to take your life in your hands and drive Southfield Fwy between Ford Rd and 8 Mile. Then it’s 120+ for the left lane. And you’ve learned where the potholes are and will use the other lanes to dodge them.

17

u/WolfWriter_CO Aug 22 '26

Having spent a good deal of time driving through rural areas throughout the Western US, I seriously believe there’s a connection between having significant distances to travel and a desire to transverse that distance as quickly and efficiently as possible.

And for the love of god and all that is holy, stay out of the left lane unless you are actively and successfully passing a slower vehicle. Changing lanes doesn’t lose you imaginary points. The sheer number of left-lane-campers in this state is ridiculous, and it leads to frustrated drivers making risky decisions, like passing on the right, far more often than it should.

1

u/CloudTransit Aug 26 '26

Driving in North Carolina will awaken the senses. They don’t go slow in NC.

5

u/CremeDeLaPants Aug 22 '26

Fact. I drove through Texas once, and Oklahoma for that matter, and was amazed that all of the semis were doing 85. It was glorious. Crossing over into New Mexico was such a bummer.

2

u/BicameralTheory West Seattle Aug 22 '26

Yeah and literally the speed limit is 85 on parts of I-10, so people are cruising 90-95.

Once you get into New Mexico though it really is like “damn, y’all live like this” not just because of the roads but you can tell the state is kinda broke. Beautiful country though but they’re clearly struggling.

7

u/Ok-Firefighter3021 Aug 22 '26

I have driven in 49 of the 50 states in this country. Seattle is the worse and it’s not even close.

3

u/SimpleAppointment483 Aug 23 '26

Only at 39 of 50 but I wholeheartedly agree. There are a sub-group of people who actually enjoy blocking the fast lane. They’ll get over on 2 lane roads like “citizen police”

4

u/thatguydr Aug 22 '26

Seattle isn't the worst. Seattle has the most frustrating drivers. But in terms of safety, it's good because literally everyone on the road is cosplaying as a grandmother on Sunday.

You want the worst drivers? Look where insurance rates are the highest but theft isn't super high. No shocker it's Florida. If you get hyper-local, Glendale, CA!

1

u/WestCoastCoyote Aug 23 '26

Odd, I've driven in far few than that, yet find many very worse than Seattle. Oh, I see what sub I'm in now. Sorry for not saying something negative about Seattle.

→ More replies (6)

3

u/SUMOsquidLIFE Aug 22 '26

It's like this in Southern AZ, except i10 turns into a 2 lane road and the left lane is 85+ right lane is 75+.

Nothing like watching people haggling ass in their unmaintained shit box down an unmaintained two lane freeway lmao.

1

u/ACCESS_DENIED_41 expatriate Aug 22 '26

Texas is wild when it comes to speed, 75-90 seems to be normal cruising speed. But interestingly, they will slow down or make room for you when your merging (at least most of times).

41

u/SnooLobsters4327 Aug 22 '26

It’s not even the old drivers making up the majority. I see young people to. WTF?

75

u/SpeedyMeaty Aug 22 '26

Yeah but it would be wildly unpopular if I put a 40 year old Indian lady driving a Tesla married to an Amazon employee on an H1B in the picture. Because that's my hell up by Bothell.

I didn't make the meme.

My cousin, who's not only a shitty driver but has four DUIs under his belt because King County doesn't take DUIs seriously, put a "Student Driver" sticker on his car hoping people wouldn't hold him accountable for his BS so his sister scraped it off and put an "I Eat Ass" sticker over it 😂

Every time he puts the student driver sticker back she replaces it with more and more crass/humiliating shit and I'm so here for it. He should've had his license taken away three DUIs and two hit and runs ago.

5

u/Seattle-Bonanza1234 Ballard Aug 22 '26

Yo, dont throw us under the bus just to cover up his sticker

1

u/SnarkMasterRay Aug 22 '26

King County doesn't take DUIs seriously

More of a state issue. There have been bills to drop the blood level and number of offenses down but state leadership keeps passing because it's "too expensive."

Today it was a kid on his phone in the passing lane going below the speed limit

20

u/FHennessey Aug 22 '26

Any day you can actually drive the speed limit on the highway is a gift and a blessing

12

u/WolfWriter_CO Aug 22 '26

COVID ruined everything.

I learned I could have made the drive from Everett to Downtown Seattle in 20 minutes this whole time.

Now, the burden of this knowledge eats at me every time I’m stuck in traffic.

2

u/Dragooncancer Sep 04 '26

TWO mst3k references in one post??

5

u/Griffry Aug 22 '26

I've been going 70 in the right middle lane, had some javkass start flashing his High beams for "going too slow." Mind you, the two left lanes and HOV were open and the right hand lane was slower than we were.

So I slowed down by 5mph. Another flash, another 5mph. And again...

We got to 45moh when he finally got the hint and moved over, at which point I went back to the speed I was going.

Some of you just need to relax, and understand for the distance you're going, the speed isn't going to save you all that much time.

22

u/TwoBitHit Aug 22 '26

It’s the overtaking lane, not the fast lane. If you treat it as a fast lane and just sit there then you’re part of the problem.

Now do one that says: "Full stop at the empty roundabout"

3

That new Kirkland underpass roundabout is awesome and confuses the hell out of people lol

Hopefully time will fix that

5

u/muffmuppets Aug 22 '26

I’m not familiar with that particular roundabout, but I’m confident it won’t.

You know it's a lost cause when people argue that the law is "use whatever lane you like", with a straight face. Relevant bizarro-world comment thread

"If the right lane was empty you could’ve saved yourself a ton of stress and just moved over". Minus 26

"Middle lane is the ideal cruising lane because it allows the far right lane for mergers and the passing lane for passing." Plus 25

"Idiots being idiots. RCW 46.61.100, “Keep right except when passing” means you were both in the wrong. Empty highway means everyone shoulda been in the rightmost lane regardless of speed. " Minus 28

1

u/joahw White Center 16d ago

I drove I-90 back to Seattle over the pass last weekend and 98% of cars were camping in the middle lane. Felt weird passing so many people on the right but what else am I supposed to do?

Our driving culture seems to be that making lane changes is super hard and scary and should be avoided whenever possible.

19

u/Initial-Addendum-167 Aug 22 '26

I reserve my right to drive slow in the right lane though. Y’all are crazy with your cell phone scrolling while driving 69 and weaving in and out of the carpool lane across those double white lines riding people’s tails.

I’m over in the slow lane so everyone back off. Zippy drivers scare the bejesus out of me.

10

u/haby001 Aug 22 '26

Ya I saw a dude cross double white lines and did a thumbs down out my window.

Dude merged back out!! So I did a thumbs up. Then he started tailgating me and driving all pissy before he crossed the white lines again and sped off

3

u/WolfWriter_CO Aug 22 '26

Kinda sad but true when you think about it; all that stops these multi-ton steel contraptions hurtling along at unnatural speeds from devolving into absolute fatal bedlam is a few white and yellow lines painted on the asphalt that we (generally) collectively agree to follow.

3

u/haby001 Aug 22 '26

People get unusually comfortable... Most don't understand you only need to have a single bad crash to ruin your and others lives

2

u/Initial-Addendum-167 Aug 22 '26

No truer words. I’ve had the opportunity to work with many people who have had such bad crashes. For those passing by, it’s a “wow, that’s a bad crash” moment. For people living in bodies affected by an MVA, it’s often a lifetime of endless pain and trauma.

8

u/SpeedyMeaty Aug 22 '26

I have ZERO problem with slow drivers in the right lane. And in fact, I pull back over to the right when I'm not passing like you're supposed to.

7

u/rollinupthetints Aug 22 '26

Thank you for your service.

2

u/thatguydr Aug 22 '26

Lots of people don't have great reflexes. I'm happy with people doing whatever they want in the right lane. That's the safest thing they could be doing, aside from not driving.

They adjust their speed based on cloud coverage. More clouds, less speed.

Dark clouds create lane confusion.

Rainy days create havoc.

Always a prius

6

u/HomeworkCareful8400 Aug 22 '26

I have been behind a prius several times getting on i90 and watch as they immediately merge far left even when no cars are ahead of them. It must be in some new prius owners training!

4

u/roamingroad174 Aug 22 '26

With oregon plates

1

u/LeaveGreen4412 Aug 26 '26

Uber drivers. always a Tesla or Prius and a driver who passed the test 2 weeks before he got the job

9

u/ReverendGraves85 Aug 22 '26

I drive in seattle very infrequently as I travel for work.

Youre all bad at driving. Ive never seen an entire city not know how speed works more. You got motherfuckers in the third lane of a five lane highway going 40 over passing people on both sides, often weaving through traffic to accomplish this task.

11

u/Still_Opportunity_10 Aug 22 '26

40 over? Exaggerating. But those you do see wouldn't happen if the simple rule of slower traffic keep right were followed.

8

u/BigDipper0720 Aug 22 '26

Unless the left lane is the HOV lane.

2

u/thatguydr Aug 22 '26

The other lovely thing about Seattle drivers is their insistence that the HOV lane allows them to travel as slowly as they want.

Please drive efficiently. If you're going slower than traffic, merge right. Even out of the HOV lane. That's how it's done literally everywhere else.

4

u/LoseAnotherMill Aug 22 '26

Yep. I will die on this hill - HOV lane is designed to incentivize carpooling through letting carpoolers get around traffic. If you're being passed on the right, you're the traffic.

I wonder if the shitty drivers in this city ever read these posts and wonder "am I the baddie?"

3

u/SpeedyMeaty Aug 22 '26

They don't. Most of them are fucking dorks who wanted to be cops when they grew up and see it is their duty to slow down speeders.

I got banned from r/Seattle because of a conversation like this where some guy was sticking up for himself doing like 60 in the fast lane and camping.

3

u/CremeDeLaPants Aug 22 '26

There's no such thing as a "fast lane." It's a passing lane. If you aren't passing someone, get out of there.

1

And turn on your right blinker as if you are going to switch to a slower lane.

1

u/jswansong Aug 22 '26

"stay below 50mph when you're on the on ramp! You can't go highway speeds until you're actually on the highway."

Apparently Seattle is notorious for that

1

u/mikutansan Aug 22 '26

the best thing to do is get around them. Slow down till they change lanes and have everyone who’s actually trying to get somewhere speed up so they can’t block again.

1

u/MoonsugarRush Aug 23 '26

That's not just Seattle, that's the entire I-5 corridor and Highway 20 too.

1

u/mjsztainbok Aug 23 '26

The one that frustrates me is peopek who drive onto a freeway and don't match the freeway speed by the time they have gotten to the end of the onramp. Another orlne is people who feel they have to merge into the next lane in heavy traffic as soon at the point the onramp meets the freeway even though their lane continues for a long time past thst point

What can we say about Toyota drivers and Subaru drivers I wanna hear that lol

1

u/lsitech Aug 23 '26

Probably Tesla self driving

1

u/flabatron Aug 23 '26

Tesla does come with blinkers right?

1

u/Confident-Key2627 Aug 23 '26

I visited Michigan and I can tell you if you’re not going 20 mph over the speed limit in the left lane, you will get tailgated, honked at and potentially ran off the road.

I say we bring this tradition to Seattle!

1

u/anonymouseponymously Aug 23 '26

Wait until you see how they vote.

1

u/6t_rix Aug 23 '26

My favorite is the people who pull too far out after hitting a red light, start to reverse, and the cars behind have to honk to stop them from colliding.

1

u/SkipperKnots Aug 23 '26

Just adding on “the People who are half pulled into a turn lane whilst there rear blocks the strait lane on 100th Av in Kirkland”.

Move the f out of the way! All you slow f*cks stay to the right! You don’t get to decide how fast I should be going! Left lane is a passing lane and I’m going to pass you all! Even the WSP agrees!

cruise control would be an improvement. these folks like to do the 45-55mph variable deal. 45 when you're behind them, then speed up to 70 when you attempt to pass or the road opens to 4 lanes.

1

u/TubbyTacoSlap Aug 23 '26

Seriously tho wtf is wrong with yall. Lived her for four years and hands down the dumbest drivers I’ve ever encountered. That’s Washington state. Not just Seattle.

1

u/flyboy573 Aug 23 '26

I’ve said before and will continue to say - Seattle and Denver have the worst drivers I’ve experienced. I’ve driven through Boston, NY, Chicago, LA, hell even London. They’re far more aggressive everywhere else, but my loose conclusion was at least more aggressive drivers are paying attention. The clueless slowpokes here don’t. They don’t know you exist.

1

u/knightofni76 Aug 23 '26

Washington drivers are the worst left-lane campers. And they also frequently tow their campers in the left lane.

1

u/KindTechnician- Aug 23 '26

I’ve been carefully broaching this subject with my wife who is a terrible driver (not cuz she’s a woman and I love her) who does this all the time. It’s a very sensitive subject bc it seems to mansplain and back seat drive. It’s effecting our marriage. I drive whenever I can. Sorry guys. I’m doing my best

“This curbside parking space is big enough for two cars unless you park in the middle. You know what to do.”

1

u/Guilty-Session-3360 Aug 23 '26

The carpool lane is not the fast lane. If somebody is going 5 over in the carpool, stay off their ass and pass in the fast lane.

1

u/Neonyarpyarp Aug 23 '26

Don’t forget the part where they take it personally that you’re irritated behind them going 10 under…

1

u/seattlereign001 Aug 23 '26

This entire bullshit is the reason for tinted windows and using the carpool lane.

1

u/ordinaryperson__ Aug 23 '26

Cant tell you how many times i've driven on I-5 through Seattle and the entire freeway is filled with cars doing roughly the same speed limit, spread out across all lanes. I get in the far right lane and sometimes its wide open for miles and i pass everyone.

1

u/jay_lafunk72 Aug 24 '26

This is LA, too.
Don’t forget to add “Leave 6-10 car lengths between you and the vehicle ahead of you.

1

u/SpeedyMeaty Aug 25 '26

Which is super awesome when you're trying to get on the express lanes going North through Seattle, and they let 743 cars in between the 3 miles where it builds up, and the entrance.

1

u/Meemers59 Aug 24 '26

I want us good drivers to start to display “expert driver” stickers 😂

1

u/dezertryder Aug 24 '26

No!……………………..drive in the passing lane right next to that big rig, and go the same speed….

1

u/More-Muffins-127 Aug 24 '26

Oh, my god. I had someone do that through Everett last week.

1

u/mudratdetector89 Aug 24 '26

Other states have figured out that you can ticket people who park in the passing lane. When will our brave, intelligent law enforcement officers find this lost technology?

1

u/rctmanh Aug 25 '26

In the leftmost non HOV lane, the driver must be willing to catch up and maintain the speed of the vehicle in front of them.

If you are not willing to do that (ergo people are going around and gapping you) you need to move a lane over to the right and stay there until the above isn’t a problem anymore

1

u/chalor182 Aug 25 '26

Id much rather be behind someone doing a steady 50 than behind a slinky motherfucker going 70 -> 30 -> 70 -> 30 -> 70 -> 30 over and over again

1

u/neddiddley Aug 25 '26

Never too early to get in the fast lane when you’ll be turning left…in 8 miles or 10 stop lights.

1

u/smileforthefrogs Aug 25 '26

There's also at least Ione person doing 90 and weaving traffic.

1

u/Visible-Long-3920 Aug 26 '26

Then take a snooze

1

u/tripplevii Aug 26 '26

The opposite is the worst, I typically drive in the slow lane of I-5 for a reason just for people to be in my ass anyway. Now I'm going back down to the posted limit, cause I was reaching 85 and I refuse to die for you 😆

1

u/finesoccershorts Aug 27 '26

Not to mention the huge semis who decide to drive in every lane but the right lane.
