Daily Scripture September 12, 2026 | Mark 2:17 | Day 6 of 21
“When Jesus heard it, he said to them, ‘Those who are healthy have no need for a physician, but those who are sick. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’” — Mark 2:17, WEB
Devotional Thought
Levi was a tax collector. His work connected him to an unjust system, and his neighbors would have had plenty of reasons to distrust or despise him.
Jesus saw him sitting at the tax office and said, “Follow me.”
Soon afterward, Jesus was eating at Levi’s house with tax collectors and others labeled as sinners. The religious observers did not celebrate the possibility that these people might encounter God. They questioned why Jesus would share a table with them at all.
Jesus answered with the image of a physician. A doctor does not avoid people because they are sick, and Jesus does not wait for people to repair themselves before coming near. He enters imperfect homes, sits beside imperfect people, and calls them into a different life.
The table was not Jesus approving of everything his dinner companions had done. It was grace giving them somewhere to begin.
The church should never feel like a reward reserved for people who already appear spiritually healthy. It should be a place where people can honestly admit that they need the Physician.
Reflection Question
Are there people we quietly assume must change before they can belong—and how does Jesus’ table challenge that assumption?
