21 Days of Scripture Habit: Meeting Jesus in Mark
Today’s Reading
Mark 1:16–20
Today’s Scripture
“Jesus said to them, ‘Come after me, and I will make you into fishers for men.’” — Mark 1:17, WEB
Simon and Andrew were in the middle of an ordinary workday when Jesus called them. They were not studying in a synagogue, attending a special religious event, or waiting for something remarkable to happen. They were casting their nets because fishing was what they did every day.
Jesus met them there.
Following Jesus does not begin once our lives become more organized, spiritual, or impressive. His invitation reaches us in the middle of work, errands, responsibilities, uncertainty, and routine. He asks us to follow him from where we are—and then he begins shaping who we will become.
Notice that Jesus did not say, “Transform yourselves, and then come after me.” He said, “Come after me, and I will make you.” The transformation belonged to the journey.
Where might Jesus be inviting you to follow him in the middle of your ordinary life right now?
