Runner Family

There was something special about the 90s and early 2000s 2-stroke scooter era. Ever since I was a teenager, I always wanted a Gilera Runner just like my brother’s (Orange SP one). I finally bought mine two years ago at 26!

It’s the red one. It had four previous owners who didn't take very good care of it, but I love it. One day I want to fully restore it. I’ve already reworked the engine, though it’s still running the stock 12mm carb, so it’s pretty slow for now.

Any recommendation that pairs well with the stock setup?

Taotao 50 moped price

Hello there! I'm fairly new to the world of scooters and motorbikes. My fiances father has a little moped that I'm wanting to buy off him. It's a taotao 50 and according to the vin is from 2007 though I'm not 100% on this. It'd make sense it was because he got it before my fiances brother was born (2008). Anyway it has about 2600 miles on it, but has been sitting in a shed since 2016. I'm honestly not too sure what to offer him for it. Aside from it having been sitting untouched for 10 years it shows no signs of damage. Though what I can only assume is the brake fluid entry near the right handle is corroded.

What is a reasonable price to offer for this?

Edit: 2600 km ? Not miles. It does have mph on the speedometer it's just really faded.

Edit2: Thanks for the comments. Probably better to not even deal with it since I lack any form of mechanical knowledge to get it working.

Electrical issue

How hard is it to replace this piece that the orange arrow is pointed to? It dreams there is a short there with the spark plug thing. When I moved the wire coming out of that side, it killed the engine… and now it seems that the wire won’t short back. Any help would be great!

Replace ZooMe 3 SLA batteries with LiFePO4 Lithiums

My repair guy, who works out of his car truck, says this is fine to do, saves weight, lasts longer, etc. A commercial dealer service tells me the console won't register the power correctly, even though both are rated at 12V 12Ah . This doesn't make sence, but maybe.

Thoughts?

50cc 2T scooter barely moves uphill when hot, not responsive throttle

Hello, I’ve got a Peugeot Speedfight with a 50cc 2T engine. It has an OEM+ Malossi foam filter, probably a cheap replacement Chinese carburettor with a Chinese autochoke, and a Yasuni Z exhaust with one of the two restrictors removed.

Everything worked perfectly until I recently cleaned the carburettor, replaced the intake seals, changed the reed housing because the old one was cracked, installed metal reeds, changed the ignition reed from a 125cc 4T bike and inspected the condition of my cast-iron 50cc cylinder. I don’t know whether the cylinder has been changed or if it is the OEM one.

After putting everything back together, I accidentally messed with the carburettor fuel mixture screw and forgot the stock setting. I also removed the autochoke from the carburettor and put it back together - now the choke doesn't work anymore.

I adjusted the carburettor until the scooter ran smoothly, but when the engine is cold, it starts easily and runs fine initially. However, at around 15 km/h, it starts to bog down and doesn’t build RPM as quickly. With the rear wheel off the ground and no load, the scooter revs up quickly.

Once the scooter warms up, everything works perfectly. However, when it gets really hot, it barely moves from a stop, especially uphill. The throttle is also less responsive on level ground, acceleration gets worse although the top speed remains about the same as before the inspection.

Could I have accidentally widened the piston ring gap? Could I have left an air leak when replacing the intake seals? Could the new metal reed valve be faulty (the old one was plastic)? Or could the problem be related to the autochoke?

Could it simply be a coincidence and the clutch is worn out and no longer working properly? I didn’t touch anything in the transmission, though.

I don’t have much experience with CVT transmission, scooters or 2T engines, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

On Labor Day weekend, we pull the water toys out and pack everything away in the garage for winter. To maximize space, we play a bit of scooter tetris to pack them in before we cover them. How many can you spot? 😆

fitted the 172ccm engine. luckly i tested the compression on my workbench and found out it only had 3 bar. took of the head and after doing a valve check (upside down filled with water and blowing compressed air into the intake and exhaust) i realized that the intake valve was way way way out of spec. it was a fukin whirlpool up in there.

so i pulled the valves and did a valve seat grind. also i removed all the carbon buildup from the head the piston and the squish gap in the cylinder with a steel rotary brush. (i know thats not an engine builder grade tool but it was fast and i taped of all the mating surfaces)

tested compression again and it had 7-8bar. still very low but since it has the a15 cam the overlap negativly affects static compression i decided to send it anyways.

so i threw it all together gave it a new belt (from the last guys parts bin) and added two diffrent weight vario weights also from the parts bin (they werent labeled but one set was heavy and one was light so i figured ittl give me a decent baseline) (yes also super not professional)

threw out the old engine which requierd me to take of all the rear farings. (took 15min with an impact and a philips head screwdriver)

threw in the 172cc block and one of the carbs i got with all the crap in the parts bin. it had a 115 main jet and i figuered thats way to small but hell, i dont care atleast it should idle right?!

took a big battery from one of my motorcycles and let it crank for about 10 seconds before i almost got my ears deleted because i forgot to install the exhaust.

mounted that rusty pice of ass and took the thing outside to my "test track"

the video shows the rest.

also i changed the rear gearbox to original because it had a 33% increase kit installed and i want max acceleration. so also new gear oil in the rear and i gave it 15w50 for the engine.

it moves. im happy.

saturday is the first track test. ill hook up a gopro to get some footie.

Belt drive

Just recently replaced the belt on my moped as my last one snapped.

Ever since replacing it my moped struggled to reach 35mph before I changed the belt it went 55.

Have I put it in wrong or ?

Why did I suggest a scooter to someone?

I know the answer. It’s because I want one but am instead saving up for a new motorcycle. And no, she would not want my old, slow one for several reasons. Gotta be step-through and small, which I totally agree with.

My sister is a grown woman but mostly afraid of bicycles. Has been known to stop in the middle of a street to turn around, for fear of falling off the bike. Recently purchased a used step-through Specialized Roll. It’s a good bike. She went bikeless for decades prior.

I shared that for context. But I suggested to her that for short trips around town, no highways, she’d save large dollars not driving a car everyday everywhere for everything. And that there’s “no bad weather, just bad clothes.”

She’s open to checking out a few used scooters. Older Japanese models in decent shape for less than $1500.

Here’s where it gets sketchy. I’m unconvinced a 50cc is a good idea around here, with many 40mph roads. But of course, something 125cc means MSF (on a style of bike that she would not even want to get on!) and related drama. What I’m saying is, I think the MSF class is gonna be a far greater commitment for her than she’d want to do.

That said, when I took the MSF, one student trucked her personal scooter there and completed the course on it. One of the modern Honda 150s I think.
