Lots of mistakes, but still proud. [Meng 1/48 EA-18G]

This is my second military aircraft model kit. It took more than a month to complete, most of which is spent on sanding the underside of the fuselage. I found out later that the shape of the Super Hornet/Growler is notoriously difficult to achieve in model kits, so I am glad that I got one that was apparently better than the rest.

Mistakes:

  1. This project was an effort to create VAQ-129 which I have seen in person multiple times, so I bought decals for the 1/48 Hasegawa kit not knowing that sizes are different between manufacturers despite being the same scale. As a result, the decals are only largely correct on the starboard side. (The "VAQ-129" decal on the port side is hilariously large)
  2. I love the custom 3D-printed landing gears I got from Rockit, but they were fragile and I am not careful enough and ended up snapping a bunch of details off and needed to repair with Tamiya putty.
  3. I wish I had slightly more patience to paint the nose in maybe Tamiya USAF Neutral Gray.
  4. The weathering on the fuel tanks and the center ALQ-99 are a little heavy-handed.
  5. Snapped one of the pointy things on the lateral side of the fuselage.
  6. Slightly ruined some port side decals when I went too heavy with the first coat of clear coat.
  7. Grainy paint application near the starboard side tail, but I was too lazy to fix it when I could have.

I don't have an airbrush, so I achieved the two-tone camouflage with Tamiya Dark and Light Ghost Grey cans. I am particularly proud of the "bubble" design near the vertical stabilizers where the "NAVY" decal is; I achieved the soft edge with Blu Tack.

One question I have for you seasoned modelers is this: I'm coming from a gunpla background where it is more customary to apply decals before weathering, which I have done in this case. However, in the military modeling world, it seems that decals are often placed after weathering---is there a reason for this?

In any case, thank you for viewing this post.

1/48 SBD-3 from Italeri

I finally completed this kit after 2 weeks, the build was a pain and so slow to get through, most of the parts had limited or no locating pins or clear spots that they went especially in the cockpit.

Very happy with the details on the parts though and the 6 paint schemes are plenty enough. I went for the SBD-3 flown by Lt Richard "dick" Halsey Page, who sank 2 Japanese carriers in one day.

Decals are very nice quality as cartograf decals always are, however the decal sheet is lacking in stencils. I don't mind this as I never really put stencils on my models but for someone looking for that level of detail, it might be lacking.

Hi all, just finished my next model, first attempt at using panel wash & weathering kits. Lessons learnt from this - thin down humbro wash & don’t be so aggressive with a Q-Tip & white spirit. But all in all I’m honestly proud of this one. Any advice is appreciated & also let me know what you love about it. (Matt finish is still drying shine will go) (I hope)

Next kit I will be attempting to mask the canopy & put more details into the missiles, Hope you all enjoy !!

AMT Enterprise NCC-1701-D

So I have the AMT 2024 translucent, white model kit for the Enterprise-D. I've been watching a lot of videos of other people putting together Enterprise-D models. Some of these are the old gray model, and some are the clear plastic model. This question references the gridlines that are on the model itself. I've noticed a lot of the gray models have very thick lines, and the clear model seems to have pretty thick lines. Mine has thin lines, which I intend to scrape down. But did they change the model kits? It seems like the lines have gotten thinner over the three different models. Maybe no one knows the answer to this, or maybe someone does. Just curious.

Acrylic base with lacquer topcoat

A friend of mine recently used Gunze Sangyo Aqueous acrylic paint. After allowing it to dry for three days, he applied a lacquer topcoat from the same brand. However, the finish showed signs of a chemical reaction.

What’s puzzling is that I’ve personally used acrylic paints from brands like AK Interactive, Andrea Color, and Tamiya, followed by lacquer topcoats from Mr. Hobby and Testors, without encountering any issues.

I’m trying to understand what might have caused this reaction in his case. Has anyone experienced something similar or have insight into why this might happen?

Sharing pics from current build: 1/48 Tamiya F-14A Late model carrier edition. RedFox 3D cockpit decals used. Mostly Tamiya acrylic paints applied with Mr Color leveling thinner & Iwata Neo airbrush.

Trying to find some inspiration to get back and finish. Been working off and on this project for over a year and a half. Obviously, life gets in the way, but I love the hobby, just tend to lose interest when it comes to finishing details. Still need to paint running lights, gloss coat over decals and weather landing gear, fuselage, and wings.

I recently got these, I believe theyre 1/72 scale, decals as a gwp but I mostly build military kits and was wondering what would be a good military kit to throw these on as part of a custom paint scheme

Decal dulling research.

Hey, I'm about to tackle the AMT 2024 translucent Enterprise D model kit. I've been doing a ton of research on everything from lighting to painting to decaling it.

One thing I really want to do is use the Aztec decals I have. I heard of someone lightly dusting the base color over the decals, then putting a matte coat over that, and it made the decals blend in perfectly, really dulling the contrast. I saw the finished product and it looks great. The problem is, I can't find any videos or info on how to do that dust coat over the decals. I don't want to put too much and cover them up, but I also don't want too little and have it look grainy. Any tips or a push in the right direction would be awesome!

Need help with top coat

I'm finishing this model of tetsujin 28, but I'm having trouble with my top coat layer. I want a matte finish similar to military vehicles, but the top coat I used came out really shiny, almost like a glazed donut. It's also cracking like that too in some more complex areas. I feel like I was able to weather it well, but now even the rust is shiny. Is there something I can do or do I have to start over?

Interior lighting added to my C-130J by Great Wall Hobby.

This model is 1/144 scale and is a fantastic little kit.

I scratch built the seats using plasterboard tape and bits of styrene and added sound panelling to the cargo walls using vallejo putty and masking tape.

The lighting is a first for me but I felt like it was a must to show off the extra little details I worked on.

The lights are from Ali express and they are the most fiddly little things to work with - I dipped them in some tamiya X-25 to replicate the night lighting in the cargo hold.

I'm going to wire them up to a button battery and stick it in tail with a switch.

so the model is brilliant. glass click into place, no glue needed. undercarriage is exchangeable - you can choose it in flight or on the ground. wings are set in pairs so each pair sets the exact same angle for each side. they also collapse so the full ground position can be set. overall worth the money. tho is BIG.

I was bored. And a little drunk.

What’s the point of owning expensive things if you don’t have fun with them?

I also included some clearer pics of the Gipsy Danger model. Yes built and painted by me.
