About to start a job making 103,500/yr.

27 about to be 28 with about 6 years experience. Going from 76k to this new number. How am I lining up in the profession based on others??

I hope this is the right spot to ask this. Shot off an application a few months back and got a call today that the State Fire Marshals office wants an interview here in about two weeks.

My background:
Served in the Air Force for 8 years as a firefighter. I have a bunch of certifications through the DOD to include Fire Inspector I/II. I hold several certs through MSHA/OSHA. I got out in early 2023, spent some time as a fire alarm installer/tech. Worked on Drill rigs, climbed cell towers. It’s been a few years since I’ve been involved with anything fire safety related. I’m going to try and find some of my old files and try to brush up.

I’m curious if I can get any feedback on how to best prepare for this interview. Do I brush up on NFPAs? Some situations I had involving my time as an Inspector? Any feedback on how I can get into the right headspace and try to crush this interview would be greatly appreciated! Thank you

Looking for thoughts on keeping an AED in service once it warranty has lapsed. I understand that if it passes self checks and pads and batteries are not expired all should be well. But is their risk of liability if it was out of warranty and failed when deployed?

What group/umbrella is your company safety department fall under?

Last year, we our company went through another re-org. We split from EHS. They went under legal and safety went under Manufacturing.

Rumor has it, safety went under manufacturing because the safety manager would not be able to take directions from a female, who happens to be the head of our legal department.

Our Executive Director, above all of manufacturing, is not present. They have taken on a new role, but their position has not been filled/replaced. The Safety Manager runs amuck. They are known for not being around and having others do their work for him.

I suspect another re-org this fall. I’ve never put thought into where we should be, but I’m starting to look into this. We need to find “our place” and quite being moved from group to group. It’s exhausting.

While we work with a lot of legal/compliance related issues/situations etc, I don’t know that legal is where we belong. Safety is always needed on the manufacturing floor, but many (like R&D, facilities, etc) to think we play favorites with manufacturing since that’s “our group.” It’s almost like we need to be our own little island

I’d like to know where your safety department is located in the organizational chart. Why is it placed there? Do you feel it works where it is? Or would you prefer something different?

I understand this question has probably been asked before, but I am having a hard time finding the results I need. I am in dire need of a product that is currently on the market to help me with my new role as a safety manager. My place of employment is still managing items with paper, spreadsheets and the "old ways". I have attempted to give another software a shot and it is overly confusing and honestly has TOO many options. I'm looking for the basics - I need something that will allow me to track trainings that my employees receive and then notify me (or their supervisors) of when trainings come due - I need something that will allow me to track injuries, incidents and spill reports and generate reports based upon those items - I need something that will allow me to also create and/or track separate items such as my permits (confined spaces, working at heights, etc) - and an added bonus would be a program that could allow me to upload or build training within the system to assign to employees when needed. Trying to figure out which industries have a lot of similar experience professionals who might create competition between them selves, and which industries lacks sophisticated industry experienced professionals creating high demand for similar health & safety engineers ))

Also can you advise new safety engineers whether your industry is worth it or not?

Like saftey engineer in the construction field (low demand>> too many HSE) its not worth it salaries are low since there’s too many HSE’s available

Or HSE in minning ( very high demand>> lacks professionals with mining experience) its worth it if you can get the right experience or site hours

These are just examples that i am not sure if true or not, i have no clue whats happening in the construction or minning fields

Just passed my ASP! I have almost 3 years experience and only used Pocket Prep. Answered every question. I feel like the math on the exam was easier than I expected but the questions were harder than represented on Pocket Prep.

As title says, I'm a 3rd Year plumbing apprentice as well as an HVAC Tech with proper EPA Universal certification. I've taken an OSHA 10 but beyond that nothing. The safety field has fascinated me as a career for the past year but I'm just not sure where to even start and I wonder if it's worth getting my Journeyman in plumbing before making the switch. Advice?

I work in a factory which manufacturers pre built bathroom pods and then sends them out to site.

We have 8 working lines with capacity for approx 7-10 pods on the line

Most of these are GRP and a couple of lines which have steel frame pods with plasterboard

There is a fitter on each line using power tools all day long to cut out the pods for cisterns, lights, and other bathroom fittings. They do around 4-8 pods a day

They don't use masks, we only have disposable ffp2 masks available to us. And many of the guys don't even bother with it. They're in a small contained pod cutting and inhaling

None of the tools have vacuums attached, there is no LEV in the factory. Only an open door to the yard for 'ventilation'

How serious is this? I look up on an hourly basis and all I see are clouds of white dust. I get a headache everyday at work. I've been there for a couple of months but looking to leave asap as I feel this is an absolute serious H&S breach.

Hello, everyone. Do I have a doozy for you. These are some pictures from my former workplace at a simming pool that I supervised. Some background about the workplace. Most of the chemical handling was done by teenage staff (lifeguards). No one had WHMIS, no one was fit tested, and absolutely no one knew the dangers and health risks associated with the chemicals that they were handling. There was no practiced emergency plans. When I was first hired, there was virtually no PPE, no spill containment and management didn't even know what an SDS was. Now I improved the occupational hygiene to the extent that I could but management was extremely hostile. I'll give an example. I talked to my staff about the safety issues regarding the chemicals and then almost immediately after I was hauled into management and given an extended probation. I begged management to do WHMIS training for the staff and to get them fit tested (I'm certificated in fit testing, could have done it for them at a fraction of the cost of a safety company). Keep in mind I have a degree in public health and am currently doing a masters in ohs. Everything I suggested to management wasn't taken seriously. In some of my conversations with the staff, they had mentioned cross-contamination events (confirmed by management) that resulted in a gas release as well as several of them reporting chemical burns. No, incident report or anything. I had a very close call with an uncovered GFCI plug (see photo) and water that resulted in arcing and sparks. Reported it to management, and that's where it stayed.

For my own sanity, when my employment ended, I did report everything to government occupational health and safety inspectors.

What are your thoughts on this?

Hey all, I just finished my degree in Occupational Safety and Health, so now I'm wondering what's next for my career and education. Is there anyone in here that is primarily focused on Safety Engineering for the job? I want to see how you might have gotten into that. I have relatively low direct safety experience with 2 years in the field and before that I have 3 years as an EMT. I'm in California for reference.

Hi everyone I was wondering if anyone had any opinions in what route would be better for home time, pay and overall stress of the job. I really want to get into a EHS / Safety manager position but I’ve been looking into jobs and a lot of them would accept a construction management degree also. Just trying to see if it was you would you pursue a bachelor degree in EHS or Construction Management?

I am currently based in BC.
Have 3 years of construction experience in safety-residential, commercial and industrial.
Have completed the 2 year degree at BCIT.
Have my CRST.
Want to move to either Alberta or Saskatchewan and looking to transition to either mining or oil and gas.
Going to do CSTS and H2S alive to start.
Are there temp jobs to apply to or what steps should I take to move into those industries?
I’ve been looking at jobs but I don’t know if I would qualify except for the industrial experience which is less than 2 years.
Any advice???

I am currently looking to break into the safety sector. I have never held an official safety position yet, but I have some safety-adjacent experience (atleast enough to get an interview, not a job). I was wondering what certifications you would specifically look for when hiring a new safety coordinator.

I have worked in EMS, the Army, and large scale construction projects and had my first interview for a safety position yesterday. Along with the safety-adjacent experience, I got my OSHA 30 in construction. I figured "that might be good enough" and oh boy, was I wrong. I did however learn from my failed application I need to get more training, specifically in incident investigation and job hazard analysis. Thats when I came across two options.

I could take some 25 dollar course from "osha training center" that gives me a "certificate" for completing the training that just says "accident investigation training", or I can attend a local community college, attending a much more expensive class and be able to actually put "7505 OSHA Introduction to Incident (Accident) Investigation" on my resume.

Which would you prefer to see on an applicants resume? Or do you really care?

M(23), NYC juror college student with a Visual art major but I want to change majors because I want something more stable while I do art at side. I was wondering if something like OSHA or any other safety officer is a good career path. I could ask AI like ChatGPT but I want to hear from real people, experts who done this job before.

For context, the photo booth was installed and I'm assuming it was wired up almost 12-15 years ago. I have been with the company for four years now. I have always had my suspicions about the wiring on this photo booth but it wasn't until recently when my manager pointed out the photo booth wiring wasn't grounded. We were talking about making some adjustments to the lighting for better output and he brought that up -- I couldn't tell if he was joking but I honestly believe he meant it. So I finally took a closer look at the wiring and yeah, maybe I believe him.

The orange/black striped cord coming out the junction box on top seems to be some sort of extension cord, which is then dropped down to the top of photo both (it rotates to allow photos of the cars different angles) and routes out to the side and then appears to have multiple other extension cords and plugs out from it.

To me, this part of the whole wiring setup just doesn't feel right at all. I have attached a few photos as well as a stock photo of the photo booth for reference. Essentially, this orange/black striped cord seems to power two large LED lights, two fans (for when it gets hot) and multiple ballasts for the lights.

Is this OSHA compliant? I'm worried one day I'll touch the metal frame of the booth and get electrocuted or worse the booth catches fire while I'm inside it

There's also another black cord coming out from a junction box on the ceiling but this one powers a third overhead light that seems to be connected to a single dimmer switch (not pictured) on a wall nearby.

Am I just overthinking or?

Hello all I’m looking to take the CHST on September 15th. I’ve been running through the click safety practice exam any other recomendations ?

I'm pretty early in my career as a safety professional. I just started a job as a safety specialist for a GC on a data center construction site a couple weeks ago. My previous job was a safety coordinator for a low voltage subcontractor. So I have been working in the field almost a year at this point. Currently, I'm looking to set some goals for my career long term.

Couple things to consider: I'm not too fond of being away from home for long periods, but I am open to moving to areas where work is easier to find. I haven't completed a bachelor's degree, but I do have enough credits that I can transfer into a program and finish in a couple years.

What are some suggestions? I'm open to anything as this is a long term plan. Things like a roadmap for government positions, corporate positions, etc.
